In this paper we study the problem of density in (1,3] for the Chern ratio of surfaces with ample cotangent bundle. In particular we prove density in (1,2) by constructing a family of complete intersection surfaces in a product of varieties with big cotangent bundle. We also analyse the case of complete intersections in a product of curves of genus at least 2.
Any smooth projective variety contains many complete intersection subvarieties with ample cotangent bundles, of each dimension up to half its own dimension.
We study smooth projective complex varieties with ample cotangent bundle. Our main result is that in an abelian variety of dimension n, a complete intersection of at least n/2 general hypersurfaces of sufficiently high degrees has ample cotangent bundle. We discuss the conjecture that the analogous statement should hold in the projective space. Finally, we present a construction due to Bogomolov of varieties with ample cotangent bundle as linear sections of a product of varieties with big cotangent bundle.
We study surfaces of general type $S$ whose cotangent sheaf is generated by its global sections. We define a map called the cotangent map of $S$ that enables us to understand the obstructions to the ampleness of the cotangent sheaf of $S$. These obstructions are curves on $S$ that we call "non-ample". We classify surfaces with an infinite number of non-ample curves and we partly classify the non-ample curves.
We prove that a general complete intersection of dimension $n$, codimension $c$ and type $d_1, \dots, d_c$ in $\mathbb{P}^N$ has ample cotangent bundle if $c \geq 2n-2$ and the $d_i$'s are all greater than a bound that is $O(1)$ in $N$ and quadratic in $n$. This degree bound substantially improves the currently best-known super-exponential bound in $N$ by Deng, although our result does not address the case $n \leq c < 2n-2$.
Let $K$ be the function field of a smooth curve over an algebraically closed field $k$. Let $X$ be a scheme, which is smooth and projective over $K$. Suppose that the cotangent bundle $Ω_{X/K}$ is ample. Let $R:={\rm Zar}(X)(K)\cap X)$ be the Zariski closure of the set of all $K$-rational points of $X$, endowed with its reduced induced structure. We prove that there is a projective variety $X_0$ over $k$ and a finite and surjective $K^{\rm sep}$-morphism $X_{0,K^{\rm sep}}\to R_{K^{\rm sep}}$, which is birational when ${\rm char}(K)=0$.
In this paper we prove a generalization of a theorem of Schneider, which gives a criterion for a projective surface over the complex numbers to have an ample cotangent bundle. After reviewing different notions of positivity, we introduce a slightly weaker notion of ampleness, which we call quasi-ample, and then are able to extend Schneider's result to higher dimensions.
In this paper, we study a variation of a conjecture of Debarre on positivity of cotangent bundles of complete intersections. We establish the ampleness of Schur powers of cotangent bundles of generic complete intersections in projective manifolds, with high enough explicit codimension and multi-degrees. Our approach is naturally formulated in terms of flag bundles and allows one to reach the optimal codimension. On complex manifolds, this ampleness property implies intermediate hyperbolic properties. We give a natural application of our main result in this context.
We consider a complex smooth projective variety equipped with an action of an algebraic torus with a finite number of fixed points. We compare the motivic Chern classes of Białynicki-Birula cells with the $K$-theoretic stable envelopes of cotangent bundle. We prove that under certain geometric assumptions satisfied e.g. by homogenous spaces these two notions coincide up to normalization.
We observe that the proof of the Bogomolov stable restriction theorem can be adapted to give an ampleness criterion for globally generated rank 2 vector bundles on certain surfaces. This applies to the Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundles, to congruences of lines in P^3, and possibly to the construction of surfaces with ample cotangent bundle (help welcome!).
Projective varieties with ample cotangent bundle satisfy many notions of hyperbolicity, and one goal of this paper is to discuss generalizations to quasi-projective varieties. A major hurdle is that the naive generalization fails, i.e. the log cotangent bundle is never ample. Instead, we define a notion called almost ample which roughly asks that the log cotangent is as positive as possible. We show that all subvarieties of a quasi-projective variety with almost ample log cotangent bundle are of log general type. In addition, if one assumes globally generated then we obtain that such varieties…
We prove that the cotangent bundle of a complete intersection of two general translates of the theta divisor of the jacobian of a general curve of genus 4 is ample. From this the same result for a general principally polarized abelian variety of dimension 4 follows.
Let F be a function field of one variable over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, X a geometrically irreducible smooth projective variety over F, and L a line bundle on X. In this note, we will prove that if the contangent bundle of X is ample and X is non-isotrivial, then there are a proper closed algebraic set Y of X and a constant A > 0 such that h_L(P) <= A d(P) + O(1) for all P \in X(\bar{F}) \ Y(\bar{F}), where h_L(P) is a geometric height of P with respect to L and d(P) is the geometric logarithmic discriminant of P. As corollary of the above height inequality, we can…
Let $X$ be a Hyperkähler manifold, and let $H$ be an ample divisor on $X$. We give a lower bound in terms of the Beauville-Bogomolov form $q(H)$ for the twisted cotangent bundle $Ω_X \otimes H$ to be pseudoeffective. If $X$ is deformation equivalent to the Hilbert scheme of a K3 surface the lower bound can be written down explicitly and we study its optimality.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$ of $\dim X\geq 4$ and Picard number $ρ(X)=1$. Suppose that $X$ satisfies $H^i(X,F^{m*}_X(\Omg^j_X)\otimes\Ls^{-1})=0$ for any ample line bundle $\Ls$ on $X$, and any nonnegative integers $m,i,j$ with $0\leq i+j<\dim X$, where $F_X:X\rightarrow X$ is the absolute Frobenius morphism. We prove that by procedures combining taking smooth hypersurfaces of dimension $\geq 3$ and cyclic covers along smooth divisors, if the resulting smooth projective variety $Y$ has ample (resp. nef) canonical bundle …
Based on a geometric interpretation of Brotbek's symmetric differential forms, for the intersection family $\mathcal{X}$ of generalized Fermat-type hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{K}}^N$ defined over any field $\mathbb K$, we reconstruct explicit symmetric differential forms by applying Cramer's rule, skipping cohomology arguments, and we further exhibit unveiled families of lower degree symmetric differential forms on all possible intersections of $\mathcal{X}$ with coordinate hyperplanes. Thereafter, we develop what we call the `moving coefficients method' to prove a conjecture made by…
Let $\sE$ be an ample rank $r$ bundle on a smooth toric projective surface, $S$, whose topological Euler characteristic is $e(S)$. In this article, we prove a number of surprisingly strong lower bounds for $c_1(\sE)^2$ and $c_2(\sE)$. We also enumerate the exceptions to either the inequality $c_1(\sE)^2\ge 4e(S)$ or the inequality $c_2(\sE)\ge e(S)$ holding.
The cotangent bundle of a non-uniruled projective manifold is generically nef, due to a theorem of Miyaoka. We show that the cotangent bundle is actually generically ample, if the manifold is of general type and study in detail the case of intermediate Kodaira dimension. Moreover, manifolds with generically nef and ample tangent bundles are investigated as well as connections to classical theorems on vector fields on projective manifolds.
Let X be a normal projective variety, and let A be an ample Cartier divisor on X. We prove that the twisted cotangent sheaf $Ω_X \otimes A$ is generically nef with respect to the polarisation A unless X is a projective space. As an application we prove a Kobayashi-Ochiai theorem for foliations: if $F \subsetneq T_X$ is a foliation of rank r such that $det F \equiv i_F A$, then we have $i_F \leq r$.
Fix a Chern character of a stable sheaf on the plane. Assume either the rank is at most 6 or the rank and first Chern class are coprime and the discriminant is sufficiently large. We use recent results of Bayer and Macri on Bridgeland stability to compute the ample cone of the moduli space of Gieseker semistable sheaves with the given Chern character. We recover earlier results, such as those by Stromme and Yoshioka, as special cases.
The aim of this work is to construct examples of pairs whose logarithmic cotangent bundles have strong positivity properties. These examples are constructed from any smooth n-dimensional complex projective varieties by considering the sum of at least n general sufficiently ample hypersurfaces.
Using compactifications in the logarithmic cotangent bundle, we obtain a formula for the Chern classes of the pushforward of Lagrangian cycles under an open embedding with normal crossing complement. This generalizes earlier results of Aluffi and Wu-Zhou. The first application of our formula is a geometric description of Chern-Mather classes of an arbitrary very affine variety, generalizing earlier results of Huh which held under the smooth and schon assumptions. As the second application, we confirm an involution formula relating sectional maximum likelihood (ML) degrees and ML bidegrees, whi…
Let $X$ be a nonsingular projective $n$-fold $(n\ge 2)$ of Fano or of general type with ample canonical bundle $K_X$ over an algebraic closed field $κ$ of any characteristic. We produce a new method to give a bunch of inequalities in terms of all the Chern classes $c_1, c_2, \cdots, c_n$ by pulling back Schubert classes in the Chow group of Grassmannian under the Gauss map. Moreover, we show that if the characteristic of $κ$ is $0$, then the Chern ratios $(\frac{c_{2,1^{n-2}}}{c_{1^n}}, \frac{c_{2,2,1^{n-4}}}{c_{1^n}}, \cdots, \frac{c_{n}}{c_{1^n}})$ are contained in a convex polyhedron for al…
In this short note, we will gives several remarks on rational points of varieties whose cotangent bundles are generated by global sections. For example, we will show that if the sheaf of differentials of a projective variety X over a number field k is ample and generated by global sections, then the set of k-rational points of X is finite.
In this paper, we provide two different resolutions of structural sheaves of projectivized tangent bundles of smooth complete intersections. These resolutions allow in particular to obtain convenient (and completely explicit) descriptions of cohomology of twisted symmetric powers of cotangent bundles of complete intersections, which are easily implemented on computer. We then provide several applications. First, we recover the known vanishing theorems on the subject, and show that they are optimal via some non-vanishing theorems. Then, we study the symmetric algebra of global sections of symme…
In this paper we study the cohomology of tensor products of symmetric powers of the cotangent bundle of complete intersection varieties in projective space. We provide an explicit description of some of those cohomology groups in terms of the equations defining the complete intersection. We give several applications. First we prove a non-vanishing result, then we give a new example illustrating the fact that the dimension of the space of holomorphic symmetric differential forms is not deformation invariant. Our main application is the construction of varieties with ample cotangent bundle, prov…
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety of dimension $n$, and let $E$ be an ample vector bundle over $X$. We show that any non-zero Schur class of $E$, lying in the cohomology group of bidegree $(n-1, n-1)$, has a representative which is strictly positive in the sense of smooth forms. This conforms the prediction of Griffiths conjecture on the positive polynomials of Chern classes/forms of an ample vector bundle on the form level, and thus strengthens the celebrated positivity results of Fulton-Lazarsfeld for certain degrees.
For the moduli spaces of Abelian differentials, the Euler characteristic is one of the most basic intrinsic topological invariants. We give a formula for the Euler characteristic that relies on intersection theory on the smooth compactification by multi-scale differentials. It is a consequence of a formula for the full Chern polynomial of the cotangent bundle of the compactification. The main new technical tools are an Euler sequence for the cotangent bundle of the moduli space of Abelian differentials and computational tools in the Chow ring, such as normal bundles to boundary divisors.
We generalize the Chern class relation for the transversal intersection of two nonsingular varieties to a relation for possibly singular varieties, under a 'splayedness' assumption. The relation is shown to hold for both the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class and the Chern-Fulton class. The main tool is a formula for Segre classes of splayed subschemes. We also discuss the Chern class relation under the assumption that one of the varieties is a general very ample divisor.
Let $X$ be a smooth compact complex surface subject to the following conditions: (i) the canonical line bundle $\mathcal{O}_X(K_X) $ is very ample, (ii) the irregularity $q(X): = h^1(\mathcal{O}_X) =0$, (iii) $X$ contains no rational normal curves of degree $\leq (p_g-1)$, (iv) the multiplication map $m_2: Sym^2(H^0(\mathcal{O}_X(K_X))) \longrightarrow H^0 (\mathcal{O}_X (2K_X))$ is surjective. It is shown that the Infinitesimal Torelli holds for such $X$. Our proof is based on the study of the cup-product $$ H^1 (Θ_X) \longrightarrow (\mathcal{O}_X(K_X))^{\ast} \otimes H^1 (Ω_X) $$ where $Θ_X…
In this paper we examine different problems regarding complete intersection varieties of high degree in a complex projective space. First we show how one can deduce hyperbolicity for generic complete intersection of high multidegree and high codimension from the known results on hypersurfaces. Then we prove a existence theorem for jet differentials that generalizes a theorem of S. Diverio. Finally, motivated by a conjecture of O. Debarre, we focus on the positivity of the cotangent bundle of complete intersections, and prove some results towards this conjecture; among other things, we prove th…
Let $(S,L)$ be a polarized abelian surface of Picard rank one and let $ϕ$ be the function which takes each ample line bundle $L'$ to the least integer $k$ such that $L'$ is $k$-very ample but not $(k+1)$-very ample. We use Bridgeland's stability conditions and Fourier-Mukai techniques to give a closed formula for $ϕ(L^n)$ as a function of $n$ showing that it is linear in $n$ for $n>1$. As a byproduct, we calculate the walls in the Bridgeland stability space for certain Chern characters.
We apply a conjectured inequality on third chern classes of stable two-term complexes on threefolds to Fujita's conjecture. More precisely, the inequality is shown to imply a Reider-type theorem in dimension three which in turn implies that K_X + 6L is very ample when L is ample, and that 5L is very ample when K_X is trivial.
We introduce a notion of admissible Hermitian metrics on parabolic bundles and define positivity properties for the same. We develop Chern-Weil theory for parabolic bundles and prove that our metric notions coincide with the already existing algebro-geometric versions of parabolic Chern classes. We also formulate a Griffiths conjecture in the parabolic setting and prove some results that provide evidence in its favour for certain kinds of parabolic bundles. For these kinds of parabolic structures, we prove that the conjecture holds on Riemann surfaces. We also prove that a Berndtsson-type resu…
We show that the tangent bundle of a projective manifold with nef anticanonical class is generically nef. That is, its restriction to a curve cut out by general sufficiently ample divisors is a nef vector bundle. This confirms a conjecture of Peternell. As a consequence, the second Chern class of such a manifold has non-negative intersections with ample divisors. We also investigate under which conditions these positivities are strict, and answer a question of Yau.
In the context of uniformisation problems, we study projective varieties with klt singularities whose cotangent sheaf admits a projectively flat structure over the smooth locus. Generalising work of Jahnke-Radloff, we show that torus quotients are the only klt varieties with semistable cotangent sheaf and extremal Chern classes. An analogous result for varieties with nef normalised cotangent sheaves follows.
Over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb{K}$ with any characteristic, on an $N$-dimensional smooth projective $\mathbb{K}$-variety $\mathbf{P}$ equipped with $c\geqslant N/2$ very ample line bundles $\mathcal{L}_1,\dots,\mathcal{L}_c$, we study the General Debarre Ampleness Conjecture, which expects that for all large degrees $d_1,\dots,d_c\geqslant d_0\gg 1$, for generic $c$ hypersurfaces $ H_1\in \big|\mathcal{L}_1^{\,\otimes\,d_1}\big|$, $\dots$, $H_c\in \big|\mathcal{L}_c^{\,\otimes\,d_c}\big|$, the complete intersection $X:=H_1 \cap \cdots \cap H_c$ has ample cotangent bundle $Ω_X$. Fi…
We conjecture the equality of the numerical and Kodaira dimensions $ν_1^*(X)$ and $κ_1^*(X)$ for the cotangent bundle of compact Kähler manifolds $X$, generalising the classical case of the canonical bundle. We show or reduce it to the classical case of the canonical bundle for some peculiar manifolds: among them, the rationally connected ones, or resolutions of varieties with klt singularities and trivial first Chern class, in which case we show that $ν_1^*(X)=κ_1^*(X)=q'(X)-dim(X)$, where $q'(X)$ is the maximal irregularity of a finite étale cover of $X$. The proof rests on the Beauville-Bog…
We show that tautological integrals on Hilbert schemes of points can be written in terms of universal polynomials in Chern numbers. The results hold in all dimensions, though they strengthen known results even for surfaces by allowing integrals over arbitrary "geometric" subsets (and their Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes). We apply this to enumerative questions, proving a generalised Göttsche Conjecture for all singularity types and in all dimensions. So if L is a sufficiently ample line bundle on a smooth variety X, in a general subsystem P^d of |L| of appropriate dimension the number of hy…
In this article, we give numerical restrictions on the Chern classes of Ulrich bundles on higher-dimensional manifolds, which are inspired by the results of Casnati in the case of surfaces. As a by-product, we prove that the only projective manifolds whose tangent bundle is Ulrich are the twisted cubic and the Veronese surface. Moreover, we prove that the cotangent bundle is never Ulrich.
Let $H$ be an ample line bundle on a non-singular projective surface $X$, and $M(H)$ the coarse moduli scheme of rank-two $H$-semistable sheaves with fixed Chern classes on $X$. We show that if $H$ changes and passes through walls to get closer to $K_X$, then $M(H)$ undergoes natural flips with respect to canonical divisors. When $X$ is minimal and its Kodaira dimension is positive, this sequence of flips terminates in $M(H_X)$; $H_X$ is an ample line bundle lying so closely to $K_X$ that the canonical divisor of $M(H_X)$ is nef. Remark that so-called Thaddeus-type flips somewhat differ from f…
In this paper we look at two naturally occurring situations where the following question arises. When one can find a metric so that a Chern-Weil form can be represented by a given form ? The first setting is semi-stable Hartshorne-ample vector bundles on complex surfaces where we provide evidence for a conjecture of Griffiths by producing metrics whose Chern forms are positive. The second scenario deals with a particular rank-2 bundle (related to the vortex equations) over a product of a Riemann surface and the sphere.
By way of intersection theory on $\bar M_{g,n}$, we show that geometric interpretations for conformal blocks, as sections of ample line bundles over projective varieties, do not have to hold at points on the boundary. We show such a translation would imply certain recursion relations for first Chern classes of these bundles. While recursions can fail, geometric interpretations are shown to hold under certain conditions.
This article is concerned with Chern class and Chern number inequalities on polarized manifolds and nef vector bundles. For a polarized pair $(M,L)$ with $L$ very ample, our first main result is a family of sharp Chern class inequalities. Among them the first one is a variant of a classical result and the equality case of the second one is a characterization of hypersurfaces. The second main result is a Chern number inequality on it, which includes a reverse Miyaoka-Yau type inequality. The third main result is that the Chern numbers of a nef vector bundle over a compact Kähler manifold are bo…
We investigate the jumping conics of stable vector bundles $\Ee$ of rank 2 on a smooth quadric surface $Q$ with the Chern classes $c_1=\Oo_Q(-1,-1)$ and $c_2=4$ with respect to the ample line bundle $\Oo_Q(1,1)$. We describe the set of jumping conics of $\Ee$, a cubic symmetroid in $\PP_3$, in terms of the cohomological properties of $\Ee$. As a consequence, we prove that the set of jumping conics, $S(\Ee)$, uniquely determines $\Ee$. Moreover we prove that the moduli space of such vector bundles is rational.
Let J be an abelian surface with a generic ample line bundle O(1). For n>0, the moduli space M(2, 0, 2n) of O(1)-semistable sheaves F of rank 2 with Chern classes c_1(F) = 0, c_2(F) = 2n is a singular projective variety, endowed with a holomorphic symplectic structure on the smooth locus. In this paper, we show that there does not exist a crepant resolution of M(2; 0; 2n) for n>1. This certainly implies that there is no symplectic desingularization of M(2, 0, 2n) for n>1.
Previously, many people have studied a stability of vector bundles of given rank and Chern classes on algebraic varieties. Recently, we are interested in the slope stability of the rank 2 Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundle $E_{C,Z}$ on a K3 surface $X$ associated to a very ample smooth curve $C$ on $X$ and a base point free pencil $Z$ on $C$ with respect to $\mathcal{O}_X(C)$. In this paper, we will give a sufficient condition for such a Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundle $E_{C,Z}$ to be $\mathcal{O}_X(C)$-slope semistable by ACM line bundles with respect to $\mathcal{O}_X(C)$.
We prove that the cyclic homology of a scheme with an ample line bundle coincides with the cyclic homology of its category of algebraic vector bundles. As a byproduct of the proof, we obtain a new construction of the Chern character of a perfect complex on a ringed space.
