We observe magnetic effects in ultra-high quality factor crystalline quartz Bulk Acoustic Wave resonators at milli-Kelvin temperature. The study reveals existence of hysteresis loops, jumps and memory effects of acoustical resonance frequencies. These loops arise as a response to the external magnetic field and span over few Hertz range for modes with linewidths of about $25$mHz, which constitute a frequency shift of order 60 linewidths. The effects are broadband but get stronger towards higher frequencies where both nonlinear effects and losses are limited by two level systems. This suggests that the observed effects are due to ferromagnet-like phase of a spin ensemble coupled to mechanical modes. The observed coupling between mechanical and spin degrees of freedom in the ultra low loss regime brings new possibilities for the emerging class of quantum hybrid systems.
Low field magnetotransport revealing signatures of ballistic transport effects in strained Si/SiGe cavities is investigated. We fabricated strained Si/SiGe cavities by confining a high mobility Si/SiGe 2DEG in a bended nanowire geometry defined by electron-beam lithography and reactive ion etching. The main features observed in the low temperature magnetoresistance curves are the presence of a zero-field magnetoresistance peak and of an oscillatory structure at low fields. By adopting a simple geometrical model we explain the oscillatory structure in terms of electron magnetic focusing. A deta…
We studied giant magnetoimpedance (GMI) effect in commercial crystalline Mumetal, with the emphasis to sample thickness dependence and annealing effects. By using appropriate heat treatment one can achieve GMI ratios as high as 310%, and field sensitivity of about 20%/Oe, which is comparable to the best GMI characteristics obtained for amorphous and nanocrystalline soft magnetic materials.
We propose a simple phenomenological model describing vibrational dynamics in a class of materials (like clathrates), which are crystalline compounds with closed cavities in their structures. In the spirit of a minimalist approach, our model includes only the minimum of ingredients necessary to capture the generic features of this class of compounds as brought to light by experiments. We consider only two kinds of particles: strongly coupled host atoms, which form the structural cavities, and guest atoms confined in the cavities. In spite of the confinement, for relatively small amplitude vibr…
We have investigated the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) of (In,Fe)As ferromagnetic semiconductor (FMS) layers grown on semi-insulating GaAs substrates. In a 10 nm-thick (In,Fe)As layer which is insulating at low temperature, we observed crystalline AMR with two-fold and eight-fold symmetries. In a metallic 100 nm-thick (In,Fe)As layer with higher electron concentration, only two-fold symmetric crystalline AMR was observed. Our results demonstrate the macroscopic ferromagnetism in (In,Fe)As with magnetic anisotropy that depends on the electron concentration. Non-crystalline AMR is also obs…
Angular magnetotransport measurements have been performed to tackle the origin of the magnetoresistance in the quasi-1D Hollandite Ba1.2Rh8O16. Three samples of different impurities amount were measured. We observe that the low temperature resistivity upturn is not due to a charge density wave transition, and a dominant role of impurities scattering for low temperature transport properties is instead demonstrated. The components of magnetoresistance were separated by using the Kohler plot and the angular dependency of the resistance under magnetic field. It shows the major contribution of an i…
e report the effect of pressure on the steplike magnetostriction of single crystalline bilayered manganite (LaPr)1.2Sr1.8Mn2O8, for our understandings of the ultrasharp nature of the field-induced first-order transition from a paramagnetic insulator to a ferromagnetic metal phase. The application of pressure suppresses a steplike transformation and causes a broad change in the magnetostriction. The injection of an electric current to the crystal also weakens the steplike variation in both the magnetostriction and magnetoresistance. The stabilization of ferromagnetic interaction or the delocali…
We report magneto-crystalline anisotropy (MCA) calculations of Fe, Co and Ni slabs of various thicknesses and crystallographic orientations from two Density Functional Theory codes based either on a plane wave or a local atomic basis set expansion and a magnetic tight-binding method. We analyze the evolution of the MCA with the number of layers of the slabs. The decomposition of MCA into contributions of atomic sites helps understanding the oscillatory behaviour of the MCA with the slab thickness and highlights the role of finite size effects. We also identify some specific systems with enhanc…
We present an x-ray spectromicroscopic investigation of single-crystalline magnetic FeMn/Co bilayers on Cu(001), using X-ray magnetic circular (XMCD) and linear (XMLD) dichroism at the Co and Fe L3 absorption edges in combination with photoelectron emission microscopy (PEEM). Using the magnetic coupling between the ferromagnetic Co layer and the antiferromagnetic FeMn layer we are able to produce magnetic domains with two different crystallographic orientations of the magnetic easy axis within the same sample at the same time. We find a huge difference in the XMLD contrast between the two type…
Specific heat, magnetic torque, and magnetization studies of LiCoPO4 olivine are presented. They show that an unique set of physical properties of LiCoPO4 leads to the appearance of features characteristic of 2D Ising systems near the Neel temperature, T_N =21.6 K, and to the appearance of an uncommon effect of influence of magnetic field on the magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The latter effect manifests itself as a first-order transition, discovered at ~9 K, induced by magnetic field of 8 T. Physical nature of this transition was explained and a model describing experimental dependences satisf…
Recent research works have shown that the magnetic order in some antiferromagnetic materials can be manipulated and detected electrically, due to two physical mechanisms: Neel-order spin-orbit torques and anisotropic magnetoresistance. While these observations open up opportunities to use antiferromagnets for magnetic memory devices, different physical characterization methods are required for a better understanding of those mechanisms. Here we report a magnetic field induced rotation of the antiferromagnetic Neel vector in epitaxial tetragonal CuMnAs thin films. Using soft x-ray magnetic line…
We investigate the anisotropic nature of magnetocrystalline coupling between the crystallographic and skyrmion crystal (SKX) lattices in the chiral magnet MnSi by magnetic field-angle resolved resonant ultrasound spectroscopy. Abrupt changes are observed in the elastic moduli and attenuation when the magnetic field is parallel to the [011] crystallographic direction. These observations are interpreted in a phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau theory that identifies switching of the SKX orientation to be the result of an anisotropic magnetocrystalline coupling potential. Our paper sheds new light o…
We investigated the origin of perpendicular magneto-crystalline anisotropy (MCA) in L10 ordered FeNi alloy using first-principles density-functional calculations. We found that the perpendicular MCA of L10-FeNi arises predominantly from the constituent Fe atoms, which is consistent with recent measurements of the anisotropy of the Fe orbital magnetic moment of L10-FeNi by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. Analysis of the second-order perturbation of the spin-orbit interaction indicates that spin-flip excitations between the occupied majority-spin and unoccupied minority-spin bands make a cons…
The magnetocaloric effect in single crystalline Nd_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_{3} is investigated by measuring the field-induced adiabatic change in temperature which reveals a single negative peak around 130 K well below the Curie temperature (T_C=203 K). In order to understand this unusual magnetocaloric effect, we invoke the reported {55}^Mn spin-echo nuclear magnetic resonance, electron magnetic resonance and polarized Raman scattering measurements on Nd_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_{3}. We show that this effect is a manifestation of a competition between the double exchange mechanism and correlations arising f…
Starting with a microscopic model based on the Kohn-Luttinger Hamiltonian and kinetic p-d exchange combined with Boltzmann formula for conductivity we identify the scattering from magnetic Mn combined with the strong spin-orbit interaction of the GaAs valence band as the dominant mechanism of the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) in (Ga,Mn)As. This fact allows to construct a simple analytical model of the AMR consisting of two heavy-hole bands whose charge carriers are scattered on the impurity potential of the Mn atoms. The model predicts the correct sign of the AMR (resistivity parallel to…
MnCr2O4 that exhibits spin frustration and complex spiral spin order is of great interest from both fundamental as well as application-oriented perspectives. Unlike CoCr2O4 whose ground state presents the coexistence of commensurate spiral spin order (CSSO) and ferroelectric order, MnCr2O4 shows no multiferroicity. One reason is that the spiral spin order is highly sensitive to the oxygen concentration in MnCr2O4. Here, we have successfully grown high-quality single-crystalline MnCr2O4 by the chemical vapor transport method. We observe a new first-order magnetic transition from the incommensur…
We report a significant decrease in the low-temperature resistance induced by the application of an electric current on the $ab$-plane in the paramagnetic insulating (PMI) state of (La$_{0.4}$Pr$_{0.6}$)$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$. A colossal electroresistance effect attaining -95% is observed at lower temperatures. A colossal magnetoresistive step appears near 5T at low temperatures below 10K, accompanied by an ultrasharp width of the insulator-metal transition. Injection of higher currents to the crystal causes a disappearance of the steplike transition. These findings have a close rel…
We present a theoretical survey of magnetocrystalline anisotropies in (Ga,Mn)As epilayers and compare the calculations to available experimental data. Our model is based on an envelope function description of the valence band holes and a spin representation for their kinetic-exchange interaction with localised electrons on Mn ions, treated in the mean-field approximation. For epilayers with growth induced lattice-matching strains we study in-plane to out-of-plane easy-axis reorientations as a function of Mn local-moment concentration, hole concentration, and temperature. Next we focus on the c…
It has been demonstrated that magnetocrystalline anisotropies in (Ga,Mn)As are sensitive to lattice strains as small as 10^-4 and that strain can be controlled by lattice parameter engineering during growth, through post growth lithography, and electrically by bonding the (Ga,Mn)As sample to a piezoelectric transducer. In this work we show that analogous effects are observed in crystalline components of the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR). Lithographically or electrically induced strain variations can produce crystalline AMR components which are larger than the crystalline AMR and a signif…
We apply Mie scattering theory to study the interaction of magnetic spheres with microwaves in cavities beyond the magnetostatic and rotating wave approximations. We demonstrate that both strong and ultra-strong coupling can be realized for a stand alone magnetic spheres made from yttrium iron garnet (YIG), acting as an efficient microwave antenna. The eigenmodes of YIG spheres with radii of the order mm's display distinct higher angular momentum character that has been observed in experiments.
We present density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) of FePt, which is of great interest for magnetic recording applications. Our data, and the majority of previously calculated results for perfectly ordered crystals, predict an MAE of $\sim 3.0$ meV per formula unit, which is significantly larger than experimentally measured values. Analyzing the effects of disorder by introducing stacking faults (SFs) and anti site defects (ASDs) in varying concentrations we are able to reconcile calculations with experimental data and show that even a low concentra…
We report the first experimental study of graphene transferred on \b{eta}-Si3N4(0001)/Si(111). Our work provides a comprehensive quantitative understanding of the physics of ultrathin Si3N4 as a gate dielectric for graphene-based devices. The Si3N4 film was grown on Si(111) under ultra-high vacuum (UHV) conditions and investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Subsequently, a graphene flake was deposited on top of it by a polymer-based transfer technique, and a Hall bar device was fabricated from the graphene flake. STM was employed again to study the graphene flake under UHV conditi…
We report synthesis, structural details and electrical transport properties of topological insulator Bi2Te3. The single crystalline specimens of Bi2Te3 are obtained from high temperature (950C) melt and slow cooling (2C/hour). The resultant crystals were shiny, one piece (few cm) and of bright silver color. The Bi2Te3 crystal is found to be perfect with clear [00l] alignment. The powder XRD pattern being carried out on crushed crystals showed that Bi2Te3 crystallized in R3m symmetry with a = b = 4.3866(2) A, c = 30.4978(13) A and Gamma = 120degree. The Bi position is refined to (0, 0, 0.4038 (…
Some single-crystalline materials present an electrical resistivity which decreases between room temperature and low temperatures at zero magnetic field as in a good metal and switches to a nearly semiconductinglike behavior at low temperatures with the application of a magnetic field. Often, this is accompanied by a huge and nonsaturating linear magnetoresistance which remains difficult to explain. Here we present a systematic study of the magnetoresistance in single-crystal $γ$-PtBi$_2$. We observe that the angle between the magnetic field and the crystalline $c$ axis fundamentally changes t…
The magnetic properties of perovskite CaVO3 single crystals have been studied by means of magnetoresistance r(T, H) and magnetization M(H) measurements in fields to 18T. At 2 K, the magnetoresistance is positive and a maximum value of Dr(18T)/r(0) = 16.5% is found for H//a. The magnetization exhibits a smooth increase at 2 K, reaching values of M(18T) = 0.03, 0.05, 0.17 mB/f.u. for H//a, H//b, and H//c, respectively. This anisotropy found in M(H) is consistent with that observed for Dr(H//a) > Dr(H//b) > Dr(H//c). These results can be interpreted in terms of the field-dependent scattering mech…
Ferromagnetic Co$_2$MnGa has recently attracted significant attention due to effects related to non-trivial topology of its band structure, however a systematic study of canonical magneto-galvanic transport effects is missing. Focusing on high quality thin films, here we systematically measure anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) and its thermoelectric counterpart (AMTP). We model the AMR data by free energy minimisation within the Stoner-Wohlfarth formalism and conclude that both crystalline and non-crystalline components of this magneto-transport phenomenon are present in Co$_2$MnGa. Unlike t…
The magnetic properties of biologically-produced magnetite nanocrystals biomineralized by four different magnetotactic bacteria were compared to those of synthetic magnetite nanocrystals and large, high quality single crystals. The magnetic feature at the Verwey temperature, $T_{V}$, was clearly seen in all nanocrystals, although its sharpness depended on the shape of individual nanoparticles and whether or not the particles were arranged in magnetosome chains. The transition was broader in the individual superparamagnetic nanoparticles for which $T_{B}<T_{V}$, where $T_{B}$ is the superparama…
We report the experimental evidence in support of room temperature ferromagnetism in Ni doped 3C-SiC. Curie temperature is found to be > 350 K. Temperature dependent Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) study reveals that the valence state of Ni is 2+ and its environmental symmetry. A clear shift in both XRD and Raman peak confirms the incorporation of Ni in the host lattice. The variation in number of vacancies $V_{\mathrm{Si}}$, $V_{\mathrm{C}}$ and the number of free electron due to doping is consistent with the change in magnetization of the system. A direct correlation of ferromagnetic o…
The dielectric behavior of the single crystals of the spin-chain system Ca3Co2O6, undergoing geometrically frustrated antiferromagnetic ordering below 25 K, has been investigated as a function of temperature and magnetic field (H) and compared with magnetization (M) behavior. The results provide evidence for anisotropic magnetodielectric (MDE) coupling in this compound. Ac susceptibility exhibits a strong frequency dependence for H parallel c with changes of this feature with the application of external dc magnetic field. No feature in ac susceptibility could be observed for H perpendicular c,…
Magneto-transport properties of (111)-oriented single-crystal thin films of SnTe were investigated. SnTe (111) thin films were epitaxially grown on a BaF2 substrate by molecular beam epitaxy. By optimizing the growth conditions and the thickness of the films, the bulk carrier density could be reduced, making it possible to detect the surface transport. In the magneto-conductance (MC) measurement, a cusp-like feature around zero magnetic field was observed, which is attributed to the weak-antilocalization effect of the transport in the topological surface state. Detailed analysis of this negati…
A novel strategy of stacking binary magnets to enhance the magneto crystalline anisotropy is explored. This strategy is used in the search for hard magnets by studying FePt/MnGa and FePt/MnAl stacks. The choice of these binaries is motivated by the fact that they already possess large magneto crystalline anisotropy. Several possible alternative structures for these materials are explored in order to reduce the amount of Pt owing to its high cost.

We have studied a nearly stoichiometric insulating Y$_{0.97(2)}$Cr$_{0.98(2)}$O$_{3.00(2)}$ single crystal by performing measurements of magnetization, heat capacity, and neutron diffraction. Albeit that the YCrO$_3$ compound behaviors like a soft ferromagnet with a coersive force of $\sim$ 0.05 T, there exist strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions between Cr$^{3+}$ spins due to a strongly negative paramagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature, i.e., -433.2(6) K. The coexistence of ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism may indicate a canted AFM structure. The AFM phase transition occurs at $T_\tex…
We use first-principles-based calculations to investigate the interplay between chemical order and the magnetic properties of $L1_0$ FeNi. In particular, we investigate how deviations from perfect chemical order affect the energy difference between the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic states as well as the important magneto-crystalline anisotropy energy. Our calculations demonstrate a strong effect of the magnetic order on the chemical order-disorder transition temperature, and conversely, a strong enhancement of the magnetic transition temperature by the chemical order. Most interestingly, our …
Magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of high-purity, giant magnetocaloric polycrystalline and single-crystalline Fe2P are investigated. Fe2P displays a moderate magnetic entropy change which spans over 70 K and the presence of strong magnetization anisotropy proves this system is not fully itinerant but displays a mix of itinerant and localized magnetism. The properties of pure Fe2P are compared to those of giant magnetocaloric (Fe,Mn)2(P,A) compounds helping understand the exceptional characteristics shown by the latter which are so promising for heat pump and energy conversion applications…
Elastic crystalline membranes exhibit a buckling transition from sphere to polyhedron. However, their morphologies are restricted to convex polyhedra and are difficult to externally control. Here, we study morphological changes of closed crystalline membrane of super-paramagnetic particles. The competition of magnetic dipole-dipole interactions with the elasticity of this magnetoelastic membrane leads to concave morphologies. Interestingly, as the magnetic field strength increases, the symmetry of the buckled membrane decreases from 5-fold to 3-fold, to 2-fold and, finally, to 1-fold rotationa…
Single-crystalline Bi2Te2Se nanoplates with thicknesses between 8 and 30 nm and lateral sizes of several micrometers were synthesized by a vapour-solid growth method. Angle-dependent magnetoconductance measurements on individual nanoplates revealed the presence of a two-dimensional weak anti-localization effect. In conjunction with gate-dependent charge transport studies performed at different temperatures, evidence was gained that this effect originates from the topologically protected surface states of the nanoplates.
The integration of ferromagnetic Mn5Ge3 with the Ge matrix is promising for spin injection in a silicon-compatible geometry. In this paper, we report the preparation of magnetic Mn5Ge3 nanocrystals embedded inside the Ge matrix by Mn ions implantation at elevated temperature. By X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, we observe crystalline Mn5Ge3 with variable size depending on the Mn ion fluence. The electronic structure of Mn in Mn5Ge3 nanocrystals is 3d6 configuration, the same as in bulk Mn5Ge3. A large positive magnetoresistance has been observed at low temperatures. It c…
We present the electrical transport characteristics of a batch of nano-crystalline diamond films of varying nitrogen concentrations and explain the conduction mechanism by the disordered quasi-superlattice model applied to semiconductor heterostructures. Synthesized by the hot filament chemical vapour deposition technique, the degree of structural disorder in the films, confirmed from Raman spectroscopy, is found to be controllable, resulting in the transition of conduction mechanism from localized and activated to the metallic conduction regime. Hence through high field magneto-resistance mea…
Black phosphorus (BP) has emerged as a direct-bandgap semiconducting material with great application potentials in electronics, photonics, and energy conversion. Experimental characterization of the anisotropic thermal properties of BP, however, is extremely challenging due to the lack of reliable and accurate measurement techniques to characterize anisotropic samples that are micrometers in size. Here, we report measurement results of the anisotropic thermal conductivity of bulk BP along three primary crystalline orientations, using the novel time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect (TR-MOKE…
This chapter reviews the basic physics and thermodynamics that govern magnetocaloric materials. The thermodynamics of magnetic materials is discussed by introducing relevant free energy terms together with their microscopic origin leading to a discussion of the sources of entropy that can change in an applied magnetic field. Such entropies account for measurable magnetocaloric effects, especially in the vicinity of magnetic phase transitions. Particular attention is devoted to first order magnetic transitions that involve the coupling of spin, lattice, electronic and anisotropic magneto-crysta…
The magneto-crystalline anisotropy (MCA) of (Ga,Mn)As films has been studied on the basis of ab-initio electronic structure theory by performing magnetic torque calculations. An appreciable contribution to the in-plane uniaxial anisotropy can be attributed to an extended region adjacent to the surface. Calculations of the exchange tensor allow to ascribe a significant part to the MCA to the exchange anisotropy, caused either by a tetragonal distortion of the lattice or by the presence of the surface or interface.
Controllable geometric manipulation via micromachining techniques provides a promising tool for enhancing useful topological electrical responses relevant to future applications such as quantum information science. Here we present microdevices fabricated with focused ion beam from indium-doped topological insulator Pb1-xSnxTe. With device thickness on the order of 1 μm and an extremely large bulk resistivity, we achieve an unprecedented enhancement of the surface contribution to about 30% of the total conductance near room temperature. The surface contribution increases as the temperature is r…
The relative significance of quantum conductivity correction and magnetic nature of electrons in understanding the intriguing low-temperature resistivity minimum and negative magnetoresistance of the two-dimensional electron gas at LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interfaces has been a long outstanding issue since its discovery. Here we report a comparative magnetotransport study on amorphous and oxygen-annealed crystalline LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures at a relatively high-temperature range, where the orbital scattering is largely suppressed by thermal fluctuations. Despite of a predominantly negative out-of-p…
Three-dimensional topological insulators and topological crystalline insulators represent new quantum states of matter, which are predicted to have insulating bulk states and spin-momentum-locked gapless surface states. Experimentally, it has proven difficult to achieve the high bulk resistivity that would allow surface states to dominate the transport properties over a substantial temperature range. Here we report a series of indium-doped Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$Te compounds that manifest huge bulk resistivities together with strong evidence of topological surface states, based on thickness-dependent…
We investigate electromagnetic properties of a topological crystalline insulator (TCI) thin film under external electromagnetic fields. The TCI thin film is a topological insulator indexed by the mirror-Chern number. It is demonstrated that the gap closes together with the emergence of a pair of gapless cones carrying opposite chirarities by applying in-plane magnetic field. A pair of gapless points have opposite vortex numbers. This is a reminiscence of a pair of Weyl cones in 3D Weyl semimetal. We thus present an a magnetic-field induced semimetal-semiconductor transition in 2D material. Thi…
A detailed study of the near-surface structure and composition of Nb, the material of choice for Superconducting Radio Frequency accelerator (SRF) cavities, is of great importance in order to understand the effects of different treatments applied during cavity production. By means of surface-sensitive techniques such as grazing incidence diffuse X-ray scattering, X-ray reflectivity and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, single-crystalline Nb(100) samples were investigated in and ex-situ during annealing in UHV as well as in nitrogen atmospheres with temperatures and pressures similar to the one…
Insulating helimagnetic Cu2OSeO3 shows sizeable magnetoelectric effects in its skyrmion phase. Using magnetization measurements, magneto-current analysis and dielectric spectroscopy, we provide a thorough investigation of magnetoelectric coupling, polarization and dielectric constants of the ordered magnetic and polar phases of single-crystalline Cu2OSeO3 in external magnetic fields up to 150 mT and at temperatures below 60 K. From these measurements we construct a detailed phase diagram. Especially, the skyrmion phase and the metamagnetic transition of helical to conical spin order are charac…
We report on an infrared magneto-spectroscopy study of Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$Se, a topological crystalline insulator. We have examined a set of samples, all in the inverted regime of electronic bands, with the tin composition varying from $x=0.2$ to $0.33$. Our analysis shows that the observed response, composed of a series of interband inter-Landau level excitations, can be interpreted and modelled using the relativistic-like Hamiltonian for three-dimensional massive Dirac electrons, expanded to include diagonal quadratic terms that impose band inversion. In our data, we have not found any clear si…
