Controllable geometric manipulation via micromachining techniques provides a promising tool for enhancing useful topological electrical responses relevant to future applications such as quantum information science. Here we present microdevices fabricated with focused ion beam from indium-doped topological insulator Pb1-xSnxTe. With device thickness on the order of 1 μm and an extremely large bulk resistivity, we achieve an unprecedented enhancement of the surface contribution to about 30% of the total conductance near room temperature. The surface contribution increases as the temperature is reduced, becoming dominant below approximately 180 K, compared to 30 K in mm-thickness crystals. In addition to the enhanced surface contribution to normal-state transport, we observe the emergence of a two-dimensional superconductivity below 6 K. Measurements of magnetoresistivity at high magnetic fields reveal a weak antilocalization behavior in the normal-state magnetoconductance at low temperature and a variation in the power-law dependence of resistivity on temperature with field. These results demonstrate that interesting electrical response relevant to practical applications can be achieved by suitable engineering of single crystals.
Nanocomposite films were fabricated by supersonic cluster beam deposition (SCBD) of palladium clusters on Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) surfaces. The evolution of the electrical conductance with cluster coverage and microscopy analysis show that Pd cluster are implanted in the polymer and form a continuous layer extending for several tens of nanometers beneath the polymer surface. This allows the deposition, using stencil masks, of cluster-assembled Pd microstructures on PMMA showing a remarkably high adhesion compared to metallic films obtained by thermal evaporation. These results suggest…
We propose a minimal tight-binding model for thin films made of topological crystalline insulator (TCI) on the basis of the mirror and discrete rotational symmetries. The basic term consists of the spin-orbit interaction describing a Weyl semimetal, where gapless Dirac cones emerge at all the high symmetry points in the momentum space. We then introduce the mass term providing gaps to Dirac cones at our disposal. They simulate the thin films made of the [001], [111] and [110] TCI surfaces. TCI thin films are topological insulators protected by the mirror symmetry. We analyze the mirror-Chern n…
Dynamic radiative cooling attracts fast-increasing interest due to its adaptability to changing environment and promises for more energy-savings than the static counterpart. Here we demonstrate enhanced infrared emission by thermally switching the excitation of magnetic polariton with microstructured vanadium dioxide (VO2) metasurfaces fabricated via scalable and etch-free processes. Temperature-dependent infrared spectroscopy clearly shows that the spectral emittance of fabricated tunable metasurfaces at wavelengths from 2 to 6 um is significantly enhanced when heated beyond its phase transit…
Improving interfacial thermal transport is crucial for heat dissipation in systems. Here, we design a strategy by utilizing the water adsorption-desorption process in porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to tune the interfacial heat transfer. We observe a changeable thermal conductance across the solid/porous MOFs interfaces owing to the dense water channel formed by the adsorbed water molecules in MOFs. Our experimental results show that the interfacial thermal conductance of Au/Cu3(BTC)2 heterointerfaces is increased up to 7.1 folds by this strategy, where Cu3(BTC)2 is a typical porous MOF…
We report on van der Waals epitaxial growth, materials characterization and magnetotransport experiments in crystalline nanosheets of Bismuth Telluro-Sulfide (BTS). Highly layered, good-quality crystalline nanosheets of BTS are obtained on SiO$_2$ and muscovite mica. Weak-antilocalization (WAL), electron-electron interaction-driven insulating ground state and universal conductance fluctuations are observed in magnetotransport experiments on BTS devices. Temperature, thickness and magnetic field dependence of the transport data indicate the presence of two-dimensional surface states along with …
We studied the anharmonic modal contributions to heat transfer at the interface of crystalline Si and amorphous SiO2 using the recently proposed interface conductance modal analysis (ICMA) method. Our results show that ~74% of the thermal interface conductance (TIC) arises from the extended modes, which occupy more than ~58% of the entire population of vibrational modes in the system. More interestingly, although the population of purely localized and interfacial modes on the SiO2 side is less than 6 times the population of partially extended modes, the contribution to TIC by these localized m…
Magneto-transport properties of (111)-oriented single-crystal thin films of SnTe were investigated. SnTe (111) thin films were epitaxially grown on a BaF2 substrate by molecular beam epitaxy. By optimizing the growth conditions and the thickness of the films, the bulk carrier density could be reduced, making it possible to detect the surface transport. In the magneto-conductance (MC) measurement, a cusp-like feature around zero magnetic field was observed, which is attributed to the weak-antilocalization effect of the transport in the topological surface state. Detailed analysis of this negati…
Phonon transmission across an interface between dissimilar crystalline solids is calculated using molecular dynamics simulations with interatomic force constants obtained from first principles. The results reveal that although inelastic phonon-transmission right at the geometrical interface can become far greater than the elastic one, its contribution to thermal boundary conductance (TBC) is severely limited by the transition regions, where local phonon states at the interface recover the bulk state over a finite thickness. This suggests TBC can be increased by enhancing phonon equilibration i…

Topological phases, especially topological crystalline insulators (TCIs), have been intensively explored observed experimentally in three-dimensional (3D) materials. However, the two-dimensional (2D) films are explored much less than 3D TCI, and even 2D topological insulators. Based on ab initio calculations, here we investigate the electronic and topological properties of 2D PbTe(001) few-layers. The monolayer and trilayer PbTe are both intrinsic 2D TCIs with a large band gap reaching 0.27 eV, indicating a high possibility for room-temperature observation of quantized conductance. The origin …
Heavy metal-ferromagnet bilayer structures have attracted great research interest for charge-to-spin interconversion. In this work, we have investigated the effect of the permalloy seed layer on the Ta polycrystalline phase and its spin Hall angle. Interestingly, for the same deposition rates the crystalline phase of Ta deposited on Py seed layer strongly depends on the thickness of the seed layer. We have observed a phase transition from $α$-Ta to ($α$+$β$)-Ta while increasing the Py seed layer thickness. The observed phase transition is attributed to the strain at interface between Py and Ta…
Robustness to disorder - the defining property of any topological state - has been mostly tested in low-disorder translationally-invariant materials systems where the protecting underlying symmetry, such as time reversal, is preserved. The ultimate disorder limits to topological protection are still unknown, however, a number of theories predict that even in the amorphous state a quantized conductance might yet reemerge. Here we report a directly detected robust spin response in structurally disordered thin films of the topological material Sb2Te3 free of extrinsic magnetic dopants, which we c…
The topological properties of materials are, until now, associated with the features of their crystalline structure, although translational symmetry is not an explicit requirement of the topological phases. Recent studies of hopping models on random lattices have demonstrated that amorphous model systems show a nontrivial topology. Using {\it ab initio} calculations we show that two-dimensional amorphous materials can also display topological insulator properties. More specifically, we present a realistic state-of-the-art study of the electronic and transport properties of amorphous bismuthene…
As the focus of applied research in topological insulators (TI) evolves, the need to synthesize large-area TI films for practical device applications takes center stage. However, constructing scalable and adaptable processes for high-quality TI compounds remains a challenge. To this end, a versatile van der Waals epitaxy (vdWE) process for custom-feature Bismuth Telluro-Sulfide TI growth and fabrication is presented, achieved through selective-area fluorination and modification of surface free-energy on mica. The TI features grow epitaxially in large single-crystal trigonal domains, exhibiting…
Topological materials with both insulating and semimetal phases can be protected by crystalline (e.g. mirror) symmetry. The insulating phase, called topological crystalline insulator (TCI), has been intensively investigated and observed in three-dimensional materials. However, the predicted two-dimensional (2D) materials with TCI phase are explored much less than 3D TCIs and 2D topological insulator, while so far considered 2D TCIs almost exclusively possess a square lattice structure with the mirror Chern number $\mathcal C_{M} =-2$. Here, we predict theoretically that hexagonal monolayer of …
Transition metal dichalcogenides XTe$_{2}$ (X=Mo,W) have been shown to be second-order topological insulators based on first-principles calculations, while topological hinge states have been shown to emerge based on the associated tight-binding model. The model is equivalent to the one constructed from a loop-nodal semimetal by adding mass terms and spin-orbit interactions. We propose to study a chiral-symmetric model obtained from the original Hamiltonian by simplifying it but keeping almost identical band structures and topological hinge states. A merit is that we are able to derive various …
The correlation between the transport properties and structural degrees of freedom of conducting polymers is a central concern in both practical applications and scientific research. In this study, we demonstrated the existence of mesoscopic two-dimensional (2D) coherent charge transport in poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) film by performing structural investigations and high-field magnetoconductance (MC) measurements in magnetic fields of up to 15 T. We succeeded in observing marked positive MCs reflecting 2D electronic states in a conventional drop-cast fil…
The Luttinger liquid (LL) model of one-dimensional (1D) electronic systems provides a powerful tool for understanding strongly correlated physics including phenomena such as spin-charge separation. Substantial theoretical efforts have attempted to extend the LL phenomenology to two dimensions (2D), especially in models of closely packed arrays of 1D quantum wires, each being described as a LL. Such coupled-wire models have been successfully used to construct 2D anisotropic non-Fermi liquids, quantum Hall states, topological phases, and quantum spin liquids. However, an experimental demonstrati…
The quest to improve transparent conductors balances two key goals: increasing electrical conductivity and increasing optical transparency. To improve both simultaneously is hindered by the physical limitation that good metals with high electrical conductivity have large carrier densities that push the plasma edge into the ultra-violet range. Transparent conductors are compromises between electrical conductivity, requiring mobile electrons, and optical transparency based on immobile charges to avoid screening of visible light. Technological solutions reflect this trade-off, achieving the desir…
