In the theory of point interactions, one is given a formal expression for a quantum mechanical Hamiltonian. The interaction terms of the Hamiltonian are singular: they can not be rigorously defined as a perturbation (in the operator or form sense) of an unperturbed free operator. A similar situation occurs in Quantum Field Theory, where it is known as the ultraviolet problem. Recently, it was shown that some of the tools used in the context of point interactions can be adapted to solve the problem of directly defining a Hamiltonian for the Nelson model. This model provides a well studied example of a bosonic quantum field that is linearly coupled to nonrelativistic particles. The novel method employs so called abstract interior-boundary conditions to explicitly characterise the action and the domain of the Hamiltonian without the need for a renormalisation procedure. Here, for the first time, the method of interior-boundary conditions is applied to the massless Nelson model. Neither ultraviolet nor infrared cutoffs are needed.
In the one nucleon sector of Nelson's massless model with an ultraviolet cut-off and no infrared regularization, one particle improper states are constructed and a scattering theory is developed both for the massless scalar field and for the non-relativistic particle.
We provide a new construction of infraparticle states in the massless Nelson model. The approximating sequence of our infraparticle state does not involve any infrared cut-offs. Its derivative w.r.t. the time parameter $t$ is given by a simple explicit formula. The convergence of this sequence as $t\to \infty$ to a non-zero limit is then obtained by the Cook method combined with stationary phase estimates. To apply the latter technique we exploit recent results on regularity of ground states in the massless Nelson model, which hold in the low coupling regime.
We consider a model describing $N$ non-relativistic particles coupled to a massless quantum scalar field, called \emph{Nelson model}, under a binding condition on the external potential. We prove that this model does not admit ground state in the Fock representation of the canonical commutation relations, but it does in another not unitarily equivalent coherent representation. Remark that the binding condition is satisfied for small values of the coupling constant.
The Schroedinger equation for N particles interacting through effective pair potentials is derived from the massless Nelson model with ultraviolet cutoffs. We consider a scaling limit where the particles are slow and heavy, but, in contrast to earlier work [6], no ``weak coupling'' is assumed. To this end we prove a space-adiabatic theorem without gap condition which gives, in particular, control on the rate of convergence in the adiabatic limit.
The conventional approach to the infrared problem in perturbative quantum electrodynamics relies on the concept of inclusive collision cross-sections. A non-perturbative variant of this notion was introduced in algebraic quantum field theory. Relying on these insights, we take first steps towards a non-perturbative construction of inclusive collision cross-sections in the massless Nelson model. We show that our proposal is consistent with the standard scattering theory in the absence of the infrared problem and discuss its status in the infrared-singular case.
We prove that in the Euclidean representation of the three dimensional massless Nelson model the t = 0 projection of the interacting measure is absolutely continuous with respect to a Gaussian measure with suitably adjusted mean. We also determine the Hamiltonian in the Fock space over this Gaussian measure space.
We show that the ground state energy of the translationally invariant Nelson model, describing a particle coupled to a relativistic field of massless bosons, is an analytic function of the coupling constant and the total momentum. We derive an explicit expression for the ground state energy which is used to determine the effective mass.
For the massless Nelson model we provide detailed information about the dependence of the normalized ground states $\checkψ_{P,σ}$ of the fiber single-electron Hamiltonians $H_{P,σ}$ on the total momentum $P$ and the infrared cut-off $σ$. This information is obtained with the help of the iterative analytic perturbation theory. In particular, we derive bounds of the form \[ \|\partial_{P_i}\checkψ_{P,σ}\|,\ \| \partial_{P_i} \partial_{P_j}\checkψ_{P,σ} \|\leq \frac{c}{σ^{δ_{λ_0}}}, \] for some constant $c$ and a function of the maximal admissible coupling constant $λ_0\mapsto δ_{λ_0}$ s.t. $\li…
We prove that Nelson's massless scalar field model is infrared divergent in three dimensions. In particular, the Nelson Hamiltonian and the Hamiltonian obtained from Euclidean quantization are not unitarily equivalent. In contrast, for dimensions higher than three the Nelson Hamiltonian has a unique ground state in Fock space and the two Hamiltonians are unitarily equivalent. We also show that the Euclidean Hamiltonian has no spectral gap.
We construct two-electron scattering states and verify their tensor product structure in the infrared-regular massless Nelson model. The proof follows the lines of Haag-Ruelle scattering theory: Scattering state approximants are defined with the help of two time-dependent renormalized creation operators of the electrons acting on the vacuum. They depend on ground state wave functions of the (single-electron) fiber Hamiltonians with infrared cut-off. Convergence of these approximants as $t\to \infty$ is shown with the help of Cook's method combined with a non-stationary phase argument. Removal …
The Nelson Hamiltonian is unitarily equivalent to a Hamiltonian defined through a closed, semibounded quadratic form, the unitary transformation being explicitly known and due to Gross. In this paper we study mapping properties of the Gross-transform in order to characterize regularity properties of vectors in the form domain of the Nelson Hamiltonian. Since the operator domain is a subset of the form domain, our results apply to vectors in the domain of the Hamiltonian was well. - This work is a continuation of our previous work on the Fröhlich Hamiltonian.
In this paper we consider the massless translation invariant Nelson model with ultraviolet cutoff. It is proven that the fiber operators have no ground state if there is no infrared cutoff.
Let us consider the renormalized Nelson model at a fixed total momentum $P$: $H_{\mathrm{ren}}(P)$; The Hamiltonian $H_{\mathrm{ren}}(P)$ is defined through an infinite energy renormalization. We prove that $e^{-βH_{\mathrm{ren}}(P)}$ is positivity improving for all $P\in \mathbb{R}^3$ and $β>0$ in the Fock representation.
We construct Hamiltonians for systems of nonrelativistic particles linearly coupled to massive scalar bosons using abstract boundary conditions. The construction yields an explicit characterisation of the domain of self-adjointness in terms of boundary conditions that relate sectors with different numbers of bosons. We treat both models in which the Hamiltonian may be defined as a form perturbation of the free operator, such as Fröhlich's polaron, and renormalisable models, such as the massive Nelson model.
We study properties of the ground state of the Nelson model through functional integration. We obtain bounds on the average and the variance of the Bose field both in position and momentum space, on the distribution of the number of bosons, and on the position space distribution of the particle.
In the context of the massless Nelson model, we prove that two non-relativistic nucleons interacting with a massless meson field do not bind when a sufficiently strong Coulomb repulsion between the nucleons is added to the Hamiltonian. The result holds for both the renormalized and unrenormalized theories, and can also be applied to the so-called piezoelectric polaron model, which describes an electron interacting with the acoustical vibrational modes of a crystal through the piezoelectric interaction. The result can then be interpreted as well as a no-binding statement about piezoelectric bip…
We consider a model for a massive uncharged non-relativistic particle interacting with a massless bosonic field, widely referred to as the Nelson model. It is well known, that an ultraviolet renormalized Hamilton operator exists in this case. Further, due to translation-invariance, it decomposes into fiber operators. In this paper, we treat the renormalized fiber operators. We give a description of the operator and form domains and prove that the fiber operators do not have a ground state. Our results hold for any non-zero coupling constant and arbitrary total momentum. Our proof for the absen…
We consider the massless Nelson model with two types of massive particles which we call atoms and electrons. The atoms interact with photons via an infrared regular form-factor and thus they are Wigner-type particles with sharp mass-shells. The electrons have an infrared singular form-factor and thus they are infraparticles accompanied by soft-photon clouds correlated with their velocities. In the weak coupling regime we construct scattering states of one atom and one electron, and demonstrate their asymptotic clustering into individual particles. The proof relies on the Cook's argument, clust…
The Nelson model describes the interaction of nonrelativistic quantum particles with a relativistic quantum field of scalar bosons. Nelson rigorously demonstrated in 1964 the existence of a well-defined self-adjoint Nelson Hamiltonian by renormalisation. Recently, a Fock space description of the renormalised Nelson Hamiltonian and its domain were found based on a novel approach to defining Hamiltonians in quantum field theories. This novel approach involves an interior boundary condition (IBC) on the state vectors, which relates the value of the wave function on the boundary of the configurati…
We prove the existence, uniqueness, and strict positivity of ground states of the possibly massless renormalized Nelson operator under an infrared regularity condition and for Kato decomposable electrostatic potentials fulfilling a binding condition. If the infrared regularity condition is violated, then we show non-existence of ground states of the massless renormalized Nelson operator with an arbitrary Kato decomposable potential. Furthermore, we prove the existence, uniqueness, and strict positivity of ground states of the massless renormalized Nelson operator in a non-Fock representation w…
We derive Feynman-Kac formulas for the ultra-violet renormalized Nelson Hamiltonian with a Kato decomposable external potential and for corresponding fiber Hamiltonians in the translation invariant case. We simultaneously treat massive and massless bosons. Furthermore, we present a non-perturbative construction of a renormalized Nelson Hamiltonian in the non-Fock representation defined as the generator of a corresponding Feynman-Kac semi-group. Our novel analysis of the vacuum expectation of the Feynman-Kac integrands shows that, if the external potential and the Pauli-principle are dropped, t…
Abstract interior-boundary conditions (IBC's) allow for the direct description of the domain and the action of Hamiltonians for a certain class of ultraviolet-divergent models in Quantum Field Theory. The method was recently applied to models where nonrelativistic scalar particles are linearly coupled to a quantised field, the best known of which is the Nelson model. Since this approach avoids the use of ultraviolet-cutoffs, there is no need for a renormalisation procedure. Here, we extend the IBC method to pseudorelativistic scalar particles that interact with a real bosonic field. We constru…
We prove that the resolvent of the renormalised Nelson Hamiltonian at fixed total momentum P improves positivity in the (momentum) Fock-representation, for every P. Our argument is based on an explcit representation of the renormalised operator and its domain using interior boundary conditions.
Ultraviolet (UV) renormalization of the Nelson model in quantum field theory is considered. A relationship between a ultraviolet renormalization term and the ground state energy of the Hamiltonian with total momentum zero is studied by functional integrations.
Let $H_{P,σ}$ be the single-electron fiber Hamiltonians of the massless Nelson model at total momentum $P$ and infrared cut-off $σ>0$. We establish detailed regularity properties of the corresponding $n$-particle ground state wave functions $f^n_{P,σ}$ as functions of $P$ and $σ$. In particular, we show that \[ |\partial_{P^j}f^{n}_{P,σ}(k_1,\ldots, k_n)|, \ \ |\partial_{P^j} \partial_{P^{j'}} f^{n}_{P,σ}(k_1,\ldots, k_n)| \leq \frac{1}{\sqrt{n!}} \frac{(cλ_0)^n}{σ^{δ_{λ_0}}} \prod_{i=1}^n\frac{ χ_{[σ,κ)}(k_i)}{|k_i|^{3/2}}, \] where $c$ is a numerical constant, $λ_0\mapsto δ_{λ_0}$ is a posit…
Starting from the N-particle Nelson Hamiltonian defined by imposing an ultraviolet cutoff, we perform ultraviolet renormalization by showing that in the zero cutoff limit a self-adjoint operator exists after a logarithmically divergent term is subtracted from the original Hamiltonian. We obtain this term as the diagonal part of a pair interaction appearing in the density of a Gibbs measure derived from the Feynman-Kac representation of the Hamiltonian. Also, we show existence of a weak coupling limit of the renormalized Hamiltonian and derive an effective Yukawa interaction potential between t…
We propose an abstract framework describing energy-renormalized Hamiltonians in terms of local algebras. Within the framework, we examine the positivity improvingness of the semigroup generated by the renormalized Hamiltonian. As examples, we discuss the renormalized Nelson Hamiltonian and the renormalized Nelson Hamiltonian at fixed total momentum. The characteristic features of our approach are as follows:(i) in contrast to the probabilistic approach in the Schrödinger representation, our method works well in the Fock representation; (ii) the method covers the massless case.
We consider the Nelson model which describes a quantum system of nonrelativistic identical particles coupled to a possibly massless scalar Bose field through a Yukawa type interaction. We study the limiting behaviour of that model in a situation where the number of Bose excitations becomes infinite while the coupling constant tends to zero in a suitable sense. In that limit the appropriately rescaled Bose field converges to a classical solution of the free wave or Klein-Gordon equation depending on whether the mass of the field is zero or not, the quantum fluctuations around that solution sati…
We consider the Nelson model on some static space-times and investigate the problem of absence of a ground state. Nelson models with variable coefficients arise when one replaces in the usual Nelson model the flat Minkowski metric by a static metric, allowing also the boson mass to depend on position. We investigate the absence of a ground state of the Hamiltonian in the presence of the infrared problem, i.e. assuming that the boson mass $m(x)$ tends to $0$ at spatial infinity. Using path space techniques, we show that if $m(x)\leq C |x|^{-μ}$ at infinity for some $C>0$ and $μ>1$ then the Nels…
We consider the Nelson model with variable coefficients and investigate the problem of existence of a ground state and the removal of the ultraviolet cutoff. Nelson models with variable coefficients arise when one replaces in the usual Nelson model the flat Minkowski metric by a static metric, allowing also the boson mass to depend on position. A physical example is obtained by quantizing the Klein-Gordon equation on a static space-time coupled with a non-relativistic particle. We investigate the existence of a ground state of the Hamiltonian in the presence of the infrared problem, i.e. assum…
The massless Nelson model describes non-relativistic, spinless quantum particles interacting with a relativistic, massless, scalar quantum field. The interaction is linear in the field. We analyze the one particle sector. First, we construct the renormalized mass shell of the non-relativistic particle for an arbitrarily small infrared cut-off that turns off the interaction with the low energy modes of the field. No ultraviolet cut-off is imposed. Second, we implement a suitable Bogolyubov transformation of the Hamiltonian in the infrared regime. This transformation depends on the total momentu…
In this paper we continue the study of the energy-momentum spectrum of a class of translation invariant, linearly coupled, and massive Hamiltonians from non-relativistic quantum field theory. The class contains the Hamiltonians of E. Nelson and H. Froehlich. One of us previously investigated the structure of the ground state mass shell and the bottom of the continuous energy-momentum spectrum. Here we study the continuous energy-momentum spectrum itself up to the two-boson threshold, the threshold for energetic support of two-boson scattering states. We prove that non-threshold embedded mass s…
Time-dependent scattering theory for a large class of translation invariant models, including the Nelson and Polaron models, restricted to the vacuum and one-particle sectors is studied. We formulate and prove asymptotic completeness for these models. The translation invariance imply that the Hamiltonians considered are fibered with respect to the total momentum. On the way to asymptotic completeness we determine the spectral structure of the fiber Hamiltonians, establish a Mourre estimate and derive a geometric asymptotic completeness statement as an intermediate step.
We mathematically study the infrared catastrophe for the Hamiltonian of Nelson's model when it has the external potential in a general class. For the model, we prove the pull-through formula on ground states in operator theory first. Based on this formula, we show both non-existence of any ground state and divergence of the total number of soft bosons.
In the mid Sixties Edward Nelson proved the existence of a consistent quantum field theory that describes the Yukawa-like interaction of a non-relativistic nucleon field with a relativistic meson field. Since then it is thought, despite the renormalization procedure involved in the construction, that the quantum dynamics should be governed in the classical limit by a Schrödinger-Klein-Gordon system with Yukawa coupling. In the present paper we prove this fact in the form of a Bohr correspondence principle. Besides, our result enlighten the nature of the renormalization method employed in this …
The translation invariant model in quantum field theory is considered by functional integrations. Ultraviolet renormalization of the translation invariant Nelson model with a fixed total momentum is proven by functional integrations. As a corollary it can be shown that the Nelson Hamiltonian with zero total momentum has a ground state for arbitrary values of coupling constants in two dimension. Furthermore the ultraviolet renormalization of the polaron model is also studied.
We consider a system of a quantum particle interacting with a quantum field and an external potential $V(\bx)$. The Hamiltonian is defined by a quadratic form $H^V = H^0 + V(\bx)$, where $H^0$ is a quadratic form which preserves the total momentum. $H^0$ and $H^V$ are assumed to be bounded from below. We give a criterion for the positivity of the binding energy $E_\mathrm{bin} = E^0-E^V$, where $E^0$ and $E^V$ are the ground state energies of $H^0$ and $H^V$. As examples of the result, the positivity of the binding energy of the semi-relativistic Pauli-Fierz model and Nelson type Hamiltonian i…
The Lorentz-covariant quantization performed in the Hamiltonian path-integral formalism for massless non-Abelian gauge fields has been achieved. In this quantization, the Lorentz condition, as a constraint, must be introduced initially and incorporated into the Yang-Mills Lagrangian by the Lagrange undetermined multiplier method. In this way, it is found that all Lorentz components of a vector potential have thier corresponding conjugate canonical variables. This fact allows us to define Lorentz-invariant poisson brackets and carry out the quantization in a Lorent-covariant manner. Key words: …
We study the mathematical theory of quantum resonances in the standard model of non-relativistic QED and in Nelson's model. In particular, we estimate the survival probability of metastable states corresponding to quantum resonances and relate the resonances to poles of an analytic continuation of matrix elements of the resolvent of the quantum Hamiltonian.
We show how, given a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian $H$, we can generate new non-Hermitian operators sequentially, producing a virtually infinite chain of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians which are isospectral to $H$ and $H^\dagger$ and whose eigenvectors we can easily deduce in an almost automatic way; no ingredients are necessary other than $H$ and its eigensystem. To set off the chain and keep it running, we use, for the first time in our knowledge, a series of maps all connected to different metric operators. We show how the procedure works in several physically relevant systems. In particular, we ap…
In the reduced phase space of electromagnetism, the generator of duality rotations in the usual Poisson bracket is shown to generate Maxwell's equations in a second, much simpler Poisson bracket. This gives rise to a hierarchy of bi-Hamiltonian evolution equations in the standard way. The result can be extended to linearized Yang-Mills theory, linearized gravity and massless higher spin gauge fields.
We successively apply the generalized Case-Foldy-Feshbach-Villars (CFFV) and the Foldy-Wouthuysen (FW) transformation to derive the Hamiltonian for relativistic scalar particles in an electromagnetic field. In contrast to the original transformation, the generalized CFFV transformation contains an arbitrary parameter and can be performed for massless particles, which allows solving the problem of massless particles in an electromagnetic field. We show that the form of the Hamiltonian in the FW representation is independent of the arbitrarily chosen parameter. Compared with the classical Hamilt…
Basically (2 + 1) dimensional Dirac equation with real deformed Lorentz scalar potential is investi gated in this study. The position dependent Fermi velocity function transforms Dirac Hamiltonian into a Klein-Gordon-like effective Hamiltonian system. The complex Hamiltonian and its real energy spectrum and eigenvectors are obtained analytically. Moreover, the Lie algebraic analysis is performed.
The quantum system of a massless charged scalar field with a self-interaction is investigated. By introducing a spacial cut-off function, the Hamiltonian of the system is realized as a linear operator on a boson Fock space. It is proven that the Hamiltonian strongly commutes with the total charge operator. This fact implies that the state space of the charged scalar field is decomposed into the infinite direct sum of fixed total charge spaces. Moreover, under certain conditions, the Hamiltonian is bounded below, self-adjoint and has a ground ground state for an arbitrarily coupling constant. A…
We study the modular Hamiltonians of an interval for the massless Dirac fermion on the half-line. The most general boundary conditions ensuring the global energy conservation lead to consider two phases, where either the vector or the axial symmetry is preserved. In these two phases we derive the corresponding modular Hamiltonian in explicit form. Its density involves a bi-local term localised in two points of the interval, one conjugate to the other. The associated modular flows are also established. Depending on the phase, they mix fields with different chirality or charge that follow differ…
We compute the vacuum local modular Hamiltonian associated with a space ball region in the free scalar massless Quantum Field Theory. We give an explicit expression on the one particle Hilbert space in terms of the higher dimensional Legendre differential operator. The quadratic form of the massless modular Hamiltonian is expressed in terms of an integral of the energy density with the parabolic distribution. We then get the formula for the local entropy of a wave packet. This gives the vacuum relative entropy of a coherent state on the double cone von Neumann algebras associated with the free…
We study the massless Dirac field on the line in the presence of a point-like defect characterised by a unitary scattering matrix, that allows both reflection and transmission. Considering this system in its ground state, we derive the modular Hamiltonians of the subregion given by the union of two disjoint equal intervals at the same distance from the defect. The absence of energy dissipation at the defect implies the existence of two phases, where either the vector or the axial symmetry is preserved. Besides a local term, the densities of the modular Hamiltonians contain also a sum of scatte…
This lecture note consists of three parts. Fundamental facts on Boson Fock space are introduced in Part I. Ref. 1.and 3. are reviewed in Part II and, Ref. 2. and 4. in Part III. In Part I a symplectic structure of a Boson Fock space is studied and a projective unitary representation of an infinite dimensional symplectic group through Bogoliubov transformations is constructed. In Part II the so-called Pauli-Fierz model (PF model) with the dipole approximation in non-relativistic quantum electrodynamics is investigated. This model describes a minimal interaction between a massless quantized radi…
In this paper, we consider a system of a massless Klein-Gordon field coupled to a static source. The total Hamiltonian is a self-adjoint operator on a boson Fock space. We consider annihilation operators in the Heisenberg picture and define a sesquilinear form. Under infrared regularity conditions, it is proven that the sesquilinear form is a solution of the classical field equation.
