The massless Nelson model describes non-relativistic, spinless quantum particles interacting with a relativistic, massless, scalar quantum field. The interaction is linear in the field. We analyze the one particle sector. First, we construct the renormalized mass shell of the non-relativistic particle for an arbitrarily small infrared cut-off that turns off the interaction with the low energy modes of the field. No ultraviolet cut-off is imposed. Second, we implement a suitable Bogolyubov transformation of the Hamiltonian in the infrared regime. This transformation depends on the total momentum of the system and is non-unitary as the infrared cut-off is removed. For the transformed Hamiltonian we construct the mass shell in the limit where both the ultraviolet and the infrared cut-off are removed. Our approach is constructive and leads to explicit expansion formulae which are amenable to rigorously control the S-matrix elements.
In this paper we consider the massless translation invariant Nelson model with ultraviolet cutoff. It is proven that the fiber operators have no ground state if there is no infrared cutoff.
In the Nelson model particles interact through a scalar massless field. For hydrogen-like atoms there is a nucleus of infinite mass and charge $Ze$, $Z > 0$, fixed at the origin and an electron of mass $m$ and charge $e$. This system forms a bound state with binding energy $E_{\rm bin} = me^4Z^2/2$ to leading order in $e$. We investigate the radiative corrections to the binding energy and prove upper and lower bounds which imply that $ E_{\rm bin} = me^4 Z^2/2 + c_0 e^6 + \Ow(e^7 \ln e)$ with explicit coefficient $c_0$ and independent of the ultraviolet cutoff. $c_0$ can be computed by perturb…
In this paper we analyze the classical limit of the Nelson model with cut off, when both non-relativistic and relativistic particles number goes to infinity. We prove convergence of quantum observables to the solutions of classical equations, and find the evolution of quantum fluctuations around the classical solution. Furthermore we analyze the convergence of transition amplitudes of normal ordered products of creation and annihilation operators between different types of initial states. In particular the limit of normal ordered products between states with a fixed number of both relativistic…
Starting from the N-particle Nelson Hamiltonian defined by imposing an ultraviolet cutoff, we perform ultraviolet renormalization by showing that in the zero cutoff limit a self-adjoint operator exists after a logarithmically divergent term is subtracted from the original Hamiltonian. We obtain this term as the diagonal part of a pair interaction appearing in the density of a Gibbs measure derived from the Feynman-Kac representation of the Hamiltonian. Also, we show existence of a weak coupling limit of the renormalized Hamiltonian and derive an effective Yukawa interaction potential between t…
In the one nucleon sector of Nelson's massless model with an ultraviolet cut-off and no infrared regularization, one particle improper states are constructed and a scattering theory is developed both for the massless scalar field and for the non-relativistic particle.
We show asymptotic completeness of two-body scattering for a class of translation invariant models describing a single quantum particle (the electron) linearly coupled to a massive scalar field (bosons). Our proof is based on a recently established Mourre estimate for these models. In contrast to previous approaches, it requires no number cutoff, no restriction on the particle-field coupling strength, and no restriction on the magnitude of total momentum. Energy, however, is restricted by the two-boson threshold, admitting only scattering of a dressed electron and a single asymptotic boson. Th…
We provide a new construction of infraparticle states in the massless Nelson model. The approximating sequence of our infraparticle state does not involve any infrared cut-offs. Its derivative w.r.t. the time parameter $t$ is given by a simple explicit formula. The convergence of this sequence as $t\to \infty$ to a non-zero limit is then obtained by the Cook method combined with stationary phase estimates. To apply the latter technique we exploit recent results on regularity of ground states in the massless Nelson model, which hold in the low coupling regime.
We construct two-electron scattering states and verify their tensor product structure in the infrared-regular massless Nelson model. The proof follows the lines of Haag-Ruelle scattering theory: Scattering state approximants are defined with the help of two time-dependent renormalized creation operators of the electrons acting on the vacuum. They depend on ground state wave functions of the (single-electron) fiber Hamiltonians with infrared cut-off. Convergence of these approximants as $t\to \infty$ is shown with the help of Cook's method combined with a non-stationary phase argument. Removal …
The Schroedinger equation for N particles interacting through effective pair potentials is derived from the massless Nelson model with ultraviolet cutoffs. We consider a scaling limit where the particles are slow and heavy, but, in contrast to earlier work [6], no ``weak coupling'' is assumed. To this end we prove a space-adiabatic theorem without gap condition which gives, in particular, control on the rate of convergence in the adiabatic limit.
Let $H_{P,σ}$ be the single-electron fiber Hamiltonians of the massless Nelson model at total momentum $P$ and infrared cut-off $σ>0$. We establish detailed regularity properties of the corresponding $n$-particle ground state wave functions $f^n_{P,σ}$ as functions of $P$ and $σ$. In particular, we show that \[ |\partial_{P^j}f^{n}_{P,σ}(k_1,\ldots, k_n)|, \ \ |\partial_{P^j} \partial_{P^{j'}} f^{n}_{P,σ}(k_1,\ldots, k_n)| \leq \frac{1}{\sqrt{n!}} \frac{(cλ_0)^n}{σ^{δ_{λ_0}}} \prod_{i=1}^n\frac{ χ_{[σ,κ)}(k_i)}{|k_i|^{3/2}}, \] where $c$ is a numerical constant, $λ_0\mapsto δ_{λ_0}$ is a posit…
The translation invariant model in quantum field theory is considered by functional integrations. Ultraviolet renormalization of the translation invariant Nelson model with a fixed total momentum is proven by functional integrations. As a corollary it can be shown that the Nelson Hamiltonian with zero total momentum has a ground state for arbitrary values of coupling constants in two dimension. Furthermore the ultraviolet renormalization of the polaron model is also studied.
We consider the Nelson model with variable coefficients and investigate the problem of existence of a ground state and the removal of the ultraviolet cutoff. Nelson models with variable coefficients arise when one replaces in the usual Nelson model the flat Minkowski metric by a static metric, allowing also the boson mass to depend on position. A physical example is obtained by quantizing the Klein-Gordon equation on a static space-time coupled with a non-relativistic particle. We investigate the existence of a ground state of the Hamiltonian in the presence of the infrared problem, i.e. assum…
For the massless Nelson model we provide detailed information about the dependence of the normalized ground states $\checkψ_{P,σ}$ of the fiber single-electron Hamiltonians $H_{P,σ}$ on the total momentum $P$ and the infrared cut-off $σ$. This information is obtained with the help of the iterative analytic perturbation theory. In particular, we derive bounds of the form \[ \|\partial_{P_i}\checkψ_{P,σ}\|,\ \| \partial_{P_i} \partial_{P_j}\checkψ_{P,σ} \|\leq \frac{c}{σ^{δ_{λ_0}}}, \] for some constant $c$ and a function of the maximal admissible coupling constant $λ_0\mapsto δ_{λ_0}$ s.t. $\li…
We consider the Nelson model with ultraviolet cutoff, which describes the interaction between non-relativistic particles and a positive or zero mass quantized scalar field. We take the non-relativistic particles to obey Fermi statistics and discuss the time evolution in a mean-field limit of many fermions. In this case, the limit is known to be also a semiclassical limit. We prove convergence in terms of reduced density matrices of the many-body state to a tensor product of a Slater determinant with semiclassical structure and a coherent state, which evolve according to a fermionic version of …
Abstract interior-boundary conditions (IBC's) allow for the direct description of the domain and the action of Hamiltonians for a certain class of ultraviolet-divergent models in Quantum Field Theory. The method was recently applied to models where nonrelativistic scalar particles are linearly coupled to a quantised field, the best known of which is the Nelson model. Since this approach avoids the use of ultraviolet-cutoffs, there is no need for a renormalisation procedure. Here, we extend the IBC method to pseudorelativistic scalar particles that interact with a real bosonic field. We constru…
The asymptotic behavior of the effective mass $m_{\rm eff}(Λ)$ of the so-called Nelson model in quantum field theory is considered, where $Λ$ is an ultraviolet cutoff parameter of the model. Let $m$ be the bare mass of the model. It is shown that for sufficiently small coupling constant $|α|$ of the model, $m_{\rm eff}(Λ)/m$ can be expanded as $m_{\rm eff}(Λ)/m= 1+\sum_{n=1}^\infty a_n(Λ) α^{2n}$. A physical folklore is that $a_n(Λ)\sim [\log Λ]^{(n-1)}$ as $Λ\to \infty$. It is rigorously shown that $$0<\lim_{Λ\to\infty}a_1(Λ)<C,\quad C_1\leq \lim_{Λ\to\infty}a_2(Λ)/\logΛ\leq C_2$$ with some c…
In the theory of point interactions, one is given a formal expression for a quantum mechanical Hamiltonian. The interaction terms of the Hamiltonian are singular: they can not be rigorously defined as a perturbation (in the operator or form sense) of an unperturbed free operator. A similar situation occurs in Quantum Field Theory, where it is known as the ultraviolet problem. Recently, it was shown that some of the tools used in the context of point interactions can be adapted to solve the problem of directly defining a Hamiltonian for the Nelson model. This model provides a well studied examp…
We construct interacting quantum fields in 1+1 dimensional Minkowski space, representing neutral scalar bosons at positive temperature. Our work is based on prior work by Klein and Landau and Hoegh-Krohn
We construct a cut-off version of nonpertubative closed Bosonic string field theory in the light-cone gauge with imaginary string coupling constant. We show that the partition function is a continuous function of the string coupling constant, and conjecture a relation between the formal power series expansion of this partition function and Riemann Surfaces.
In a low energy approximation of the massless Yukawa theory (Nelson model) we derive a Faddeev-Kulish type formula for the scattering matrix of $N$ electrons and reformulate it in LSZ terms. To this end, we perform a decomposition of the infrared finite Dollard modifier into clouds of real and virtual photons, whose infrared divergencies mutually cancel. We point out that in the original work of Faddeev and Kulish the clouds of real photons are omitted, and consequently their scattering matrix is ill-defined on the Fock space of free electrons. To support our observations, we compare our final…
We report on a simple strategy to treat mean-field limits of quantum mechanical systems in which a large number of particles weakly couple to a second-quantized radiation field. Extending the method of counting, introduced in [Lett. Math. Phys. 97, 151-164], with ideas inspired by [http://www.mathematik.uni-muenchen.de/%7Ebohmmech/theses/Matulevicius_Vytautas_MA.pdf] and [J. Math. Phys. 54(1), 012303] leads to a technique that can be seen as a combination of the method of counting and the coherent state approach. It is similar to the coherent state approach but might be slightly better suited …
