In this paper we analyze the classical limit of the Nelson model with cut off, when both non-relativistic and relativistic particles number goes to infinity. We prove convergence of quantum observables to the solutions of classical equations, and find the evolution of quantum fluctuations around the classical solution. Furthermore we analyze the convergence of transition amplitudes of normal ordered products of creation and annihilation operators between different types of initial states. In particular the limit of normal ordered products between states with a fixed number of both relativistic and non-relativistic particles yields an unexpected quantum residue: instead of the product of classical solutions we obtain an average of the product of solutions corresponding to varying initial conditions.
In this paper we consider the massless translation invariant Nelson model with ultraviolet cutoff. It is proven that the fiber operators have no ground state if there is no infrared cutoff.
In the one nucleon sector of Nelson's massless model with an ultraviolet cut-off and no infrared regularization, one particle improper states are constructed and a scattering theory is developed both for the massless scalar field and for the non-relativistic particle.
We show asymptotic completeness of two-body scattering for a class of translation invariant models describing a single quantum particle (the electron) linearly coupled to a massive scalar field (bosons). Our proof is based on a recently established Mourre estimate for these models. In contrast to previous approaches, it requires no number cutoff, no restriction on the particle-field coupling strength, and no restriction on the magnitude of total momentum. Energy, however, is restricted by the two-boson threshold, admitting only scattering of a dressed electron and a single asymptotic boson. Th…
The massless Nelson model describes non-relativistic, spinless quantum particles interacting with a relativistic, massless, scalar quantum field. The interaction is linear in the field. We analyze the one particle sector. First, we construct the renormalized mass shell of the non-relativistic particle for an arbitrarily small infrared cut-off that turns off the interaction with the low energy modes of the field. No ultraviolet cut-off is imposed. Second, we implement a suitable Bogolyubov transformation of the Hamiltonian in the infrared regime. This transformation depends on the total momentu…
We construct two-electron scattering states and verify their tensor product structure in the infrared-regular massless Nelson model. The proof follows the lines of Haag-Ruelle scattering theory: Scattering state approximants are defined with the help of two time-dependent renormalized creation operators of the electrons acting on the vacuum. They depend on ground state wave functions of the (single-electron) fiber Hamiltonians with infrared cut-off. Convergence of these approximants as $t\to \infty$ is shown with the help of Cook's method combined with a non-stationary phase argument. Removal …
The Schroedinger equation for N particles interacting through effective pair potentials is derived from the massless Nelson model with ultraviolet cutoffs. We consider a scaling limit where the particles are slow and heavy, but, in contrast to earlier work [6], no ``weak coupling'' is assumed. To this end we prove a space-adiabatic theorem without gap condition which gives, in particular, control on the rate of convergence in the adiabatic limit.
Starting from the N-particle Nelson Hamiltonian defined by imposing an ultraviolet cutoff, we perform ultraviolet renormalization by showing that in the zero cutoff limit a self-adjoint operator exists after a logarithmically divergent term is subtracted from the original Hamiltonian. We obtain this term as the diagonal part of a pair interaction appearing in the density of a Gibbs measure derived from the Feynman-Kac representation of the Hamiltonian. Also, we show existence of a weak coupling limit of the renormalized Hamiltonian and derive an effective Yukawa interaction potential between t…
In the theory of point interactions, one is given a formal expression for a quantum mechanical Hamiltonian. The interaction terms of the Hamiltonian are singular: they can not be rigorously defined as a perturbation (in the operator or form sense) of an unperturbed free operator. A similar situation occurs in Quantum Field Theory, where it is known as the ultraviolet problem. Recently, it was shown that some of the tools used in the context of point interactions can be adapted to solve the problem of directly defining a Hamiltonian for the Nelson model. This model provides a well studied examp…
Let $H_{P,σ}$ be the single-electron fiber Hamiltonians of the massless Nelson model at total momentum $P$ and infrared cut-off $σ>0$. We establish detailed regularity properties of the corresponding $n$-particle ground state wave functions $f^n_{P,σ}$ as functions of $P$ and $σ$. In particular, we show that \[ |\partial_{P^j}f^{n}_{P,σ}(k_1,\ldots, k_n)|, \ \ |\partial_{P^j} \partial_{P^{j'}} f^{n}_{P,σ}(k_1,\ldots, k_n)| \leq \frac{1}{\sqrt{n!}} \frac{(cλ_0)^n}{σ^{δ_{λ_0}}} \prod_{i=1}^n\frac{ χ_{[σ,κ)}(k_i)}{|k_i|^{3/2}}, \] where $c$ is a numerical constant, $λ_0\mapsto δ_{λ_0}$ is a posit…
We consider the Nelson model with ultraviolet cutoff, which describes the interaction between non-relativistic particles and a positive or zero mass quantized scalar field. We take the non-relativistic particles to obey Fermi statistics and discuss the time evolution in a mean-field limit of many fermions. In this case, the limit is known to be also a semiclassical limit. We prove convergence in terms of reduced density matrices of the many-body state to a tensor product of a Slater determinant with semiclassical structure and a coherent state, which evolve according to a fermionic version of …
We construct interacting quantum fields in 1+1 dimensional Minkowski space, representing neutral scalar bosons at positive temperature. Our work is based on prior work by Klein and Landau and Hoegh-Krohn
The $β$ function for a scalar field theory describes the dependence of the coupling constant on the renormalization mass scale. This dependence is affected by the choice of regularization scheme. I explicitly relate the $β$-functions of momentum cut-off regularization and dimensional regularization on scalar field theories by a gauge transformation using the Hopf algebras of the Feynman diagrams of the theories.
In this article, the boundary singularity for stationary solutions of the linearized Boltzmann equation with cut-off inverse power potential is analyzed. In particular, for cut-off hard-potential cases, we establish the asymptotic approximation for the gradient of the moments. Our analysis indicates the logarithmic singularity of the gradient of the moments.
We construct a cut-off version of nonpertubative closed Bosonic string field theory in the light-cone gauge with imaginary string coupling constant. We show that the partition function is a continuous function of the string coupling constant, and conjecture a relation between the formal power series expansion of this partition function and Riemann Surfaces.
We consider families of discrete time birth and death chains on trees, and show that in presence of a drift towards the root of the tree, the chains exhibit cut-off behavior along the drift and escape behavior in the opposite direction.

In this paper we study the large-time behavior of perturbative classical solutions to the hard and soft potential Boltzmann equation without the angular cut-off assumption in the whole space $\threed_x$ with $\DgE$. We use the existence theory of global in time nearby Maxwellian solutions from \cite{gsNonCutA,gsNonCut0}. It has been a longstanding open problem to determine the large time decay rates for the soft potential Boltzmann equation in the whole space, with or without the angular cut-off assumption \cite{MR677262,MR2847536}. For perturbative initial data, we prove that solutions conver…
The quantum system of a massless charged scalar field with a self-interaction is investigated. By introducing a spacial cut-off function, the Hamiltonian of the system is realized as a linear operator on a boson Fock space. It is proven that the Hamiltonian strongly commutes with the total charge operator. This fact implies that the state space of the charged scalar field is decomposed into the infinite direct sum of fixed total charge spaces. Moreover, under certain conditions, the Hamiltonian is bounded below, self-adjoint and has a ground ground state for an arbitrarily coupling constant. A…
The spectral action in noncommutative geometry naturally implements an ultraviolet cut-off, by counting the eigenvalues of a (generalized) Dirac operator lower than an energy of unification. Inverting the well known question "how to hear the shape of a drum ?", we ask what drum can be designed by hearing the truncated music of the spectral action ? This makes sense because the same Dirac operator also determines the metric, via Connes distance. The latter thus offers an original way to implement the high-momentum cut-off of the spectral action as a short distance cut-off on space. This is a no…
We show that the set of states of the Ashtekar-Isham-Lewandowski holonomy algebra defined by elements of the Ashtekar-Lewandowski Hilbert space is dense in the space of all states. We consider weak convergence properties of a modified version of the cut-off procedure currently in use in loop quantum gravity. This version is adapted to vector states rather than to general distributions.
