We consider $μ_p$- and $α_p$-actions on RDP K3 surfaces (K3 surfaces with rational double point singularities allowed) in characteristic $p > 0$. We study possible characteristics, quotient surfaces, and quotient singularities. It turns out that these properties of $μ_p$- and $α_p$-actions are analogous to those of $\mathbb{Z}/l\mathbb{Z}$-actions (for primes $l \neq p$) and $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$-quotients respectively. We also show that conversely an RDP K3 surface with a certain configuration of singularities admits a $μ_p$- or $α_p$- or $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$-covering by a "K3-like" surface, which is often an RDP K3 surface but not always, as in the case of the canonical coverings of Enriques surfaces in characteristic $2$.
In characteristic $0$, symplectic automorphisms of K3 surfaces (i.e.\ automorphisms preserving the global $2$-form) and non-symplectic ones behave differently. In this paper we consider the actions of the group schemes $μ_{n}$ on K3 surfaces (possibly with rational double point singularities) in characteristic $p$, where $n$ may be divisible by $p$. We introduce the notion of symplecticness of such actions, and we show that symplectic $μ_{n}$-actions have similar properties, such as possible orders, fixed loci, and quotients, to symplectic automorphisms of order $n$ in characteristic $0$. We a…
Using Galois descent tools, we extend the Altmann-Hausen presentation of normal affine algebraic varieties endowed with an effective torus action over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero to the case where the ground field is an arbitrary field of characteristic zero. In this context, the acting torus may have non-trivial torsors and we need additional data to encode such varieties. Finally, we focus on affine varieties endowed with a two-dimensional torus action and we provide a method for determining when a torsor is trivial, in which case the Altmann-Hausen presentation simp…
This paper studies the existence of non trivial $μ_p$ actions on a canonically polarized surface X defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p>0. In particular, an explicit function $f(K_X^2)$ is obtained such that if $p>f(K_X^2)$, then there does not exist a non trivial $μ_p$-action on X. This implies that the connected component of the automorphism scheme of X containing the identity is either smooth or is obtained by successive extensions by $α_p$.
Let X be a normal affine T-variety of complexity at most one over a perfect field k, where T stands for the split algebraic torus. Our main result is a classification of additive group actions on X that are normalized by the T-action. This generalizes the classification given by the second author in the particular case where k is algebraically closed and of characteristic zero. With the assumption that the characteristic of k is positive, we introduce the notion of rationally homogeneous locally finite iterative higher derivations which corresponds geometrically to additive group actions on af…
In characteristic two and dimension two, wild Z/2Z-actions on k[[u,v]] ramified precisely at the origin were classified by Artin, who showed in particular that they induce hypersurface singularities. We introduce in this article a new class of wild quotient singularities in any characteristic p>0 arising from certain non-linear actions of Z/pZ on the formal power series ring in n variables. These actions are ramified precisely at the origin, and their rings of invariants in dimension n=2 are hypersurface singularities, with an equation of a form similar to the form found by Artin when p=2. In …
We consider algebraic actions of a cyclic group of order p on a K3 surface defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p. We classify possible loci of fixed points as well as possible quotient surfaces.
Minimal algebraic surfaces of general type $X$ such that $K^2_X=2χ(\mathcal{O}_X)-6$ or $K^2_X=2χ(\mathcal{O}_X)-5$ are called Horikawa surfaces. In this note we study $\mathbb{Z}^2_2$-actions on Horikawa surfaces. The main result is that all the connected components of Gieseker's moduli space of canonical models of surfaces of general type with invariants satisfying these relations contain surfaces with $\mathbb{Z}^2_2$-actions.
The notion of the orbifold Euler characteristic came from physics at the end of 80's. There were defined higher order versions of the orbifold Euler characteristic and generalized ("motivic") versions of them. In a previous paper the authors defined a notion of the Grothendieck ring $K_0^{\rm fGr}(Var)$ of varieties with actions of finite groups on which the orbifold Euler characteristic and its higher order versions are homomorphisms to the ring of integers. Here we define the generalized orbifold Euler characteristic and higher order versions of it as ring homomorphisms from $K_0^{\rm fGr}(V…
This paper studies schemes X defined over a field of characteristic p>0 which admit a nontrivial $α_p$ or $μ_p$ action. In particular, the structure of the quotient map $X \rightarrow Y$ is investigated. Information on local properties of the quotient Y, as singularities and local Picard groups, structure theorems for the quotient map and adjunction formulas for the quotient map are obtained.
We classifiy Enriques surfaces covered by the supersingular K3 surface with the Artin invariant 1 in characteristic 2. There are exactly three types of such Enriques surfaces.
By an additive action on an algebraic variety $X$ we mean a regular effective action $\mathbb{G}_a^n\times X\to X$ with an open orbit of the commutative unipotent group $\mathbb{G}_a^n$. In this paper, we give a classification of additive actions on complete toric surfaces.
We study Coble surfaces in characteristic 2, in particular, singularities of their canonical coverings. As an application we classify Coble surfaces with finite automorphism group in characteristic 2. There are exactly 9 types of such surfaces.
We give an algebro-geometric classification of smooth real affine algebraic surfaces endowed with an effective action of the real algebraic circle group $\mathbb{S}^1$ up to equivariant isomorphisms. As an application, we show that every compact differentiable surface endowed with an action of the circle $S^1$ admits a unique smooth rational real quasi-projective model up to $\mathbb{S}^1$-equivariant birational diffeomorphism.
The minimal resolution of the degree four cyclic cover of the plane branched along a GIT stable quartic is a K3 surface with a non symplectic action of Z_4. In this paper we study the geometry of the one dimensional family of K3 surfaces associated to the locus of plane quartics with five nodes.
We establish a generic vanishing theorem for surfaces in characteristic $p$ that lift to $W_2(k)$ and use it for surface classification of surfaces of general type with Euler characteristic 1 and large Albanese dimension.
We establish Noether's inequality for surfaces of general type in positive characteristic. Then we extend Enriques' and Horikawa's classification of surfaces on the Noether line, the so-called Horikawa surfaces. We construct examples for all possible numerical invariants and in arbitrary characteristic, where we need foliations and deformation techniques to handle characteristic 2. Finally, we show that Horikawa surfaces lift to characteristic zero.
We give a theorem on the effective non-vanishing problem for algebraic surfaces in positive characteristic. For the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing, the logarithmic Kollar vanishing and the logarithmic semipositivity, we give their counterexamples on ruled surfaces in positive characteristic.
Let X be a general proper and smooth curve of genus 2 (resp. of genus 3) defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p. When 3\leq p \leq 7, the action of Frobenius on rank 2 semi-stable vector bundles with trivial determinant is completely determined by its restrictions to the 30 lines (resp. the 126 Kummer surfaces) that are invariant under the action of some order 2 line bundle over X. Those lines (resp. those Kummer surfaces) are closely related to the elliptic curves (resp. the abelian varieties of dimension 2) that appear as the Prym varieties associated to double étale …
We give a notion of ordinary Enriques surfaces and their canonical lifts in any positive characteristic, and we prove Torelli-type results for this class of Enriques surfaces.
We prove that the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem holds on rational surfaces in positive characteristic by means of the lifting property to W_2(k) of certain log pairs on smooth rational surfaces. As a corollary, the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem holds on log del Pezzo surfaces in positive characteristic.
In this paper we determine all finite groups G that can act on some compact Riemann surface M with the property that if H is any non-trivial subgroup of G, then the orbit surface M/H is the Riemann sphere. The idea is to look at the induced action on the vector space of holomorphic differentials on M (in the positive genus case) and then use the old-known (Wolf) classification of groups admitting fixed point-free linear actions. A description of the corresponding group actions is given in terms of Fuchsian representations.
We classify equivariantly Gorenstein log del Pezzo surfaces with boundaries at infinity and with finite group actions such that the quotient surface modulo the finite group has Picard number one. We also determine the corresponding finite groups. Better figures are available upon request.
In this note the geography of minimal surfaces of general type admitting $\mathbb{Z}_2^2$-actions is studied. More precisely, it is shown that Gieseker's moduli space $\mathfrak{M}_{K^2,χ}$ contains surfaces admitting a $\mathbb{Z}_2^2$-action for every admissible pair $(K^2, χ)$ such that $2χ-6\leq K^2\leq 8χ-8$ or $K^2=8χ$. The examples considered allow to prove that the locus of Gorenstein stable surfaces is not closed in the KSBA-compactification $\overline{\mathfrak{M}}_{K^2,χ}$ of Gieseker's moduli space $\mathfrak{M}_{K^2,χ}$ for every admissible pair $(K^2, χ)$ such that $2χ-6\leq K^2\…
Let $X$ be an ordinary smooth curve defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2. The absolute Frobenius induces a rational map $F$ on the moduli space $M_X$ of rank 2 vector bundles with fixed trivial determinant. If the genus of $X$ is 2, the moduli space $M_X$ is isomorphic to projective space of dimension 3 (as over the complex numbers). In this case we explicitly give the equations of $F$, which enables us to determine, for example, its base locus (one point) and its image (different from $M_X$).
We give explicit blowups of the projective plane in positive characteristic that contain smooth rational curves of arbitrarily negative self-intersection, showing that the Bounded Negativity Conjecture fails even for rational surfaces in positive characteristic.
In this paper we complete the classification of effective C*-actions on smooth affine surfaces up to conjugation in the full automorphism group and up to inversion of C*. If a smooth affine surface V admits more than one C*-action then it is known to be Gizatullin i.e., it can be completed by a linear chain of smooth rational curves. In our previous paper we gave a sufficient condition, in terms of the Dolgachev- Pinkham-Demazure (or DPD) presentation, for the uniqueness of a C*-action on a Gizatullin surface. In the present paper we show that this condition is also necessary, at least in the …
We classify all possible automorphism groups of smooth cubic surfaces over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic. As an intermediate step we also classify automorphism groups of quartic del Pezzo surfaces. We show that the moduli space of smooth cubic surfaces is rational in every characteristic, determine the dimensions of the strata admitting each possible isomorphism class of automorphism group, and find explicit normal forms in each case. Finally, we completely characterize when a smooth cubic surface in positive characteristic, together with a group action, can be lift…
Let $X$ be genus 2 curve defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p$ and let $X\_1$ be its $p$-twist. Let $M\_X$ (resp. $M\_{X\_1}$) be the (coarse) moduli space of semi-stable rank 2 vector bundles with trivial determinant over $X$ (resp. $X\_1$). The moduli space $M\_X$ is isomorphic to the 3-dimensional projective space and is endowed with an action of the group $J[2]$ of order 2 line bundles over $X$. When $3\leq p \leq 7$, we show that the Verschiebung (i.e., the separable part of the action of Frobenius by pull-back) $V : M\_{X\_1} \dashrightarrow M\_X$ is completely…
We show that every irreducible, simply connected curve on a toric affine surface X over the field of complex numbers is an orbit closure of a multiplicative group action on X. It follows that up to the action of the automorphism group Aut(X) there are only finitely many non-equivalent embeddings of the affine line in X. A similar description is given for simply connected curves in the quotients of the affine plane by small finite linear groups. We provide also an analog of the Jung-van der Kulk theorem for affine toric surfaces, and apply this to study actions of algebraic groups on such surfa…
In this paper, we establish a weak version of the Kodaira vanishing theorem for surfaces in positive characteristic. As an application, we obtain some fundamental theorems in the minimal model theory for klt surfaces.
We prove that, for an Enriques surface in odd characteristic, the automorphism group is finitely generated and it acts on the effective nef cone with a rational polyhedral fundamental domain. We also construct a smooth projective surface in odd characteristic which is birational to an Enriques surface and whose automorphism group is discrete but not finitely generated.
We show that any Kawamata log terminal del Pezzo surface over an algebraically closed field of large characteristic is globally F-regular or it admits a log resolution which is liftable to characteristic zero. As a consequence, we prove the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem for klt del Pezzo surfaces of large characteristic.
We classify supersingular and classical Enriques surfaces with finite automorphism group in characteristic 2 into 8 types according to their dual graphs of all $(-2)$-curves (nonsigular rational curves). We give examples of these Enriques surfaces together with their canonical coverings. It follows that the classification of all Enriques surfaces with finite automorphism group in any characteristics has been finished.
We prove that a smooth projective surface $S$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>3$ is birational to an abelian surface if $P_1(S)=P_4(S)=1$ and $h^1(S,\mathcal{O}_S)=2$.
We obtain a version of the theorem of the square and a local structure result for actions of connected algebraic groups on seminormal varieties in characteristic 0, and arbitrary varieties in positive characteristics.
We give a 1-dimensional family of classical and supersingular Enriques surfaces in characteristic 2 covered by the supersingular K3 surface with Artin invariant 1. Moreover we show that there exist 30 nonsingular rational curves and ten non-effective (-2)-divisors on these Enriques surfaces whose reflection group is of finite index in the orthogonal group of the Neron-Severi lattice modulo torsion.
Working in characteristic two, I classify nonsmooth Enriques surfaces with normal crossing singularities. Using Kato's theory of logarithmic structures, I show that such surfaces are smoothable and lift to characteristic zero, provided they are d-semistable.
We extend to arbitrary characteristic some known results about automorphisms of complex Enriques surfaces that act trivially on the cohomology or the cohomology modulo torsion.
We develop a gluing theory in the sense of Kollár for slc surfaces and threefolds in positive characteristic. For surfaces we are able to deal with every positive characteristic $p$, while for threefolds we assume that $p>5$. Along the way we study nodes in characteristic $2$ and establish a theory of sources and springs à la Kollár for threefolds. We also give applications to the topology of lc centers on slc threefolds, and to the projectivity of the moduli space of stable surfaces in characteristic $p>5$.
We extend fundamental inequalities related to the canonical map of surfaces of general type to positive characteristic. Next, we classify surfaces on the Noether lines, i.e., even and odd Horikawa surfaces, in positive characteristic. We describe their moduli spaces and the subspaces formed by surfaces whose canonical maps are inseparable. Moreover, we compute their Betti-, deRham- and crystalline cohomology. Finally, we prove lifting to characteristic zero and show that the moduli spaces are topologically flat over the integers.
We construct explicitly moduli curves of polarized supersingular K3 surfaces in characteristic 2 with Artin invariant 2. As an application, we detect a "jump" phenomenon in a family of automorphism groups of supersingular K3 surfaces with a constant Néron-Severi lattice.
We give a classification of normal affine surfaces admitting an algebraic group action with an open orbit. In particular an explicit algebraic description of the affine coordinate rings and the defining equations of such varieties is given. By our methods we recover many known results, e.g. the classification of normal affine surfaces with a `big' open orbit of Gizatullin and Popov or some of the classification results of Danilov-Gizatullin, Bertin and others.
We classify RDP del Pezzo surfaces with global vector fields over arbitrary algebraically closed fields of characteristic $p \neq 2$. In characteristic $0$, every RDP del Pezzo surface $X$ is equivariant, that is, ${\rm Aut}_X = {\rm Aut}_{\widetilde{X}}$, where $\widetilde{X}$ is the minimal resolution of $X$, hence the classification of RDP del Pezzo surfaces with global vector fields is equivalent to the classification of weak del Pezzo surfaces with global vector fields. In this article, we show that if $p \neq 2,3,5,7$, then it is still true that every RDP del Pezzo surface is equivariant…
We study K3 surfaces with 9 cusps, i.e. 9 disjoint $A_2$ configurations of smooth rational curves, over algebraically closed fields of characteristic $p\neq 3$. Much like in the complex situation studied by Barth, we prove that each such surface admits a triple covering by an abelian surface. Conversely, we determine which abelian surfaces with order three automorphisms give rise to K3 surfaces. We also investigate how K3 surfaces with 9 cusps hit the supersingular locus.
We show that every supersingular K3 surface in characteristic 2 with Artin invariant less than or equal to 2 is obtained by the Kummer type construction of Schroeer.
