We give a notion of ordinary Enriques surfaces and their canonical lifts in any positive characteristic, and we prove Torelli-type results for this class of Enriques surfaces.
We determine the minimum positive entropy of complex Enriques surface automorphisms. This together with McMullen's work completes the determination of the minimum positive entropy of complex surface automorphisms in each class of Enriques-Kodaira classification of complex surfaces.
We prove that a twisted Enriques (respectively, untwisted bielliptic) surface over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic at least 3 (respectively, at least 5) has no non-trivial Fourier-Mukai partners.
It follows from an observation of A. Coble in 1919 that the automorphism group of an unnodal Enriques surface contains the $2$-congruence subgroup of the Weyl group of the $E_{10}$-lattice. In this article, we determine how much bigger the automorphism group of an unnodal Enriques surface can be. Furthermore, we show that the automorphism group is in fact equal to the $2$-congruence subgroup for generic Enriques surfaces in arbitrary characteristic (under the additional assumption that the Enriques surface is ordinary if the characteristic is $2$), improving the corresponding result of W. Bart…
We prove that any Fourier--Mukai partner of an abelian surface over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic is isomorphic to a moduli space of Gieseker-stable sheaves. We apply this fact to show that the Fourier--Mukai set of canonical covers of hyperelliptic and Enriques surfaces over an algebraically closed field of characteristic greater than three is trivial. These results extend to positive characteristic earlier results of Bridgeland--Maciocia and Sosna.
We prove that a smooth projective surface $S$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>3$ is birational to an abelian surface if $P_1(S)=P_4(S)=1$ and $h^1(S,\mathcal{O}_S)=2$.
Reflection walls of certain primitive vectors in the anti-invariant sublattice of the K3 lattice define Heegner divisors in the period space of Enriques surfaces. We show that depending on the norm of these primitive vectors, these Heegner divisors are either irreducible or have two irreducible components. The two components are obtained as the walls orthogonal to primitive vectors of the same norm but of different type as ordinary or characteristic.
We study the existence of linear series on curves lying on an Enriques surface and general in their complete linear system. Using a method that works also below the Bogomolov-Reider range, we compute, in all cases, the gonality of such curves. We also give a new result about the positive cone of line bundles on an Enriques surface and we show how this relates to the gonality.
We construct the moduli space of Enriques surfaces in positive characteristic and eventually over the integers, and determine its local and global structure. As an application, we show lifting of Enriques surfaces to characteristic zero. The key observation is that the canonical double cover of an Enriques surface is birational to the complete intersection of three quadrics in IP^5, even in characteristic 2.
We classify Enriques surfaces with smooth K3 cover and finite automorphism group in arbitrary positive characteristic. The classification is the same as over the complex numbers except that some types are missing in small characteristics. Moreover, we give a complete description of the moduli of these surfaces. Finally, we realize all types of Enriques surfaces with finite automorphism group over the prime fields $\mathbb{F}_p$ and $\mathbb{Q}$ whenever they exist.
We prove the non-emptiness of $M_{H,Y}(v)$, the moduli space of Gieseker-semistable sheaves on an unnodal Enriques surface $Y$ with Mukai vector $v$ of positive rank with respect to a generic polarization $H$. This completes the chain of progress initiated by H. Kim in \cite{Kim98}. We also show that the stable locus $M^s_{H,Y}(v)\neq\varnothing$ for $v^2>0$. Finally, we prove irreducibility of $M_{H,Y}(v)$ in case $v^2=0$ and $v$ primitive.
These notes are an introduction to and an overview of the theory of algebraic surfaces over algebraically closed fields of positive characteristic. After some background in characteristic-p-geometry, we sketch the Kodaira-Enriques classification. Next, we turn to more special characteristic-p topics, and end by lifting results and applications to characteristic zero. We assume that the reader has a background in complex geometry and has seen the Kodaira-Enriques classification of complex surfaces before.
The main goal of this paper is to show that Castelnuovo- Enriques' $P_{12}$-theorem also holds for algebraic surfaces $S$ defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ of positive characteristic ($char(k) = p > 0$). The $P_{12}$-theorem is a precise version of the rough classification of algebraic surfaces, in particular the conditions $P_{12} = 0$, $P_{12} = 1$,$P_{12} \geq 2$ are respectively equivalent to : Kodaira dimension $-\infty, 0 , \geq 1$. The result relies on a main theorem describing the growth of the plurigenera for properly-elliptic or properly quasi-elliptic surfaces (surfaces…
We establish Noether's inequality for surfaces of general type in positive characteristic. Then we extend Enriques' and Horikawa's classification of surfaces on the Noether line, the so-called Horikawa surfaces. We construct examples for all possible numerical invariants and in arbitrary characteristic, where we need foliations and deformation techniques to handle characteristic 2. Finally, we show that Horikawa surfaces lift to characteristic zero.
Given a smooth family F/Y of geometrically irreducible surfaces, we study sequences of arbitrarily near T-points of F/Y; they generalize the traditional sequences of infinitely near points of a single smooth surface. We distinguish a special sort of these new sequences, the strict sequences. To each strict sequence, we associate an ordered unweighted Enriques diagram. We prove that the various sequences with a fixed diagram form a functor, and we represent it by a smooth Y-scheme. We equip this Y-scheme with a free action of the automorphism group of the diagram. We equip the diagram with weig…
A complex compact surface which carries an automorphism of positive topological entropy has been proved by Cantat to be a torus, a K3 surface, an Enriques surface or a non-minimal rational surface. We deal with results obtained in this last case. After some recalls on birational maps, algebraic geometry and dynamic, we will speak about Bedford and Kim's works, but also about McMullen's work and more recently about Grivaux and the author's work. These notes have been written for four talks given at IMPA in february/march 2010.
A complex compact surface which carries an automorphism of positive topological entropy has been proved by Cantat to be either a torus, a K3 surface, an Enriques surface or a rational surface. Automorphisms of rational surfaces are quite mysterious and have been recently the object of intensive studies. In this paper, we construct several new examples of automorphisms of rational surfaces with positive topological entropy. We also explain how to define and to count parameters in families of birational maps of the complex projective plane and in families of rational surfaces.
We prove a generic vanishing type statement in positive characteristic and apply it to prove positive characteristic versions of Kawamata's theorems: a characterization of smooth varieties birational to ordinary abelian varieties and the surjectivity of the Albanese map when the Frobenius stable Kodaira dimension is zero.
A non-classical Godeaux surface is a minimal surface of general type with $χ=K^2=1$ but with $h^{01}\neq0$. We prove that such surfaces fulfill $h^{01}=1$ and they can exist only over fields of positive characteristic at most 5. Like non-classical Enriques surfaces they fall into two classes: the singular and the supersingular ones. We give a complete classification in characteristic 5 and compute their Hodge-, Hodge--Witt- and crystalline cohomology (including torsion). Finally, we give an example of a supersingular Godeaux surface in characteristic 5.
Let $\mathcal{X}$ be an ordinary (projective, geometrically irreducible, nonsingular) algebraic curve of genus $\mathcal{g}(\mathcal{X}) \ge 2$ defined over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb{K}$ of odd characteristic $p$. Let $Aut(\mathcal{X})$ be the group of all automorphisms of $\mathcal{X}$ which fix $\mathbb{K}$ element-wise. For any solvable subgroup $G$ of $Aut(\mathcal{X})$ we prove that $|G|\leq 34 (\mathcal{g}(\mathcal{X})+1)^{3/2}$. There are known curves attaining this bound up to the constant $34$. For $p$ odd, our result improves the classical Nakajima bound $|G|\leq 84(\mat…
For $X$ a curve over a field of positive characteristic, we investigate when the canonical representation of $\text{Aut}(X)$ on $H^0(X, Ω_X)$ is irreducible. Any curve with an irreducible canonical representation must either be superspecial or ordinary. Having a small automorphism group is an obstruction to having irreducible canonical representation; with this motivation, the bulk of the paper is spent bounding the size of automorphism groups of superspecial and ordinary curves. After proving that all automorphisms of an $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$-maximal curve are defined over $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$, we…
We compute the dimension of the tangent space to, and the Krull dimension of the pro-representable hull of two deformation functors. The first one is the ``algebraic'' deformation functor of an ordinary curve X over a field of positive charateristic with prescribed action of a finite group G, and the data are computed in terms of the ramification behaviour of X -> G\X. The second one is the ``analytic'' deformation functor of a fixed embedding of a finitely generated discrete group N in PGL(2,K) over a non-archimedean valued field K, and the data are computed in terms of the Bass-Serre represe…
In this paper we give a positive answer to a question of Nash concerning the arc space of a singularity, for the class of quasi-ordinary hypersurface singularities, extending to this case previous results and techniques of Shihoko Ishii.
In this article, we prove that a tame twisted K3 surface over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic has only finitely many tame twisted Fourier-Mukai partners and we give a counting formula in case we have an ordinary tame untwisted K3 surface. We also show that every tame twisted Fourier Mukai partner of a K3 surface of finite height is a moduli space of twisted sheaves over it.
The biduality and reflexivity theorems are known to hold for projective varieties defined over fields of characteristic zero, and to fail in positive characteristic. In this article, we construct a notion of reflexivity and biduality in positive characteristic by generalizing the ordinary tangent space to the notion of $h$-tangent spaces. The ordinary reflexivity theory can be recovered as the special case $h=0$, of our theory. Several varieties that are not ordinary reflexive or bidual become reflexive in our extended theory.
For an ordinary K3 surface over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic we show that every automorphism lifts to characteristic zero. Moreover, we show that the Fourier-Mukai partners of an ordinary K3 surface are in one-to-one correspondence with the Fourier-Mukai partners of the geometric generic fiber of its canonical lift. We also prove that the explicit counting formula for Fourier-Mukai partners of the K3 surfaces with Picard rank two and with discriminant equal to minus of a prime number, in terms of the class number of the prime, holds over a field of positive characte…
In this paper, we prove that a smooth projective globally $F$-split variety with numerically flat tangent bundle is an étale quotient of an ordinary abelian variety. We also show its logarithmic analog, which contains a characterization of toric varieties. We further prove that, without assumption of global $F$-splitting, a smooth projective separably rationally connected variety of arbitrary characteristic with numerically flat log cotangent bundle is a toric variety.
In this paper, we are concerned with the relation between the ordinarity of surfaces of general type and the failure of the BMY inequality in positive characteristic. We consider semistable fibrations $π:S \longrightarrow C$ where $S$ is a smooth projective surface and $C$ is a smooth projective curve. Using the exact sequence relating the locally exact differential forms on $S$, $C$, and $S/C$, we prove an inequality relating $c_1^2$ and $c_2$ for ordinary surfaces which admit generically ordinary semistable fibrations. This inequality differs from the BMY inequality by a correcting term whic…
Let $\mathcal{X}$ be a (projective, non-singular, geometrically irreducible) curve of even genus $g(\mathcal{X}) \geq 2$ defined over an algebraically closed field $K$ of odd characteristic $p$. If the $p$-rank $γ(\mathcal{X})$ equals $g(\mathcal{X})$, then $\mathcal{X}$ is \emph{ordinary}. In this paper, we deal with \emph{large} automorphism groups $G$ of ordinary curves of even genus. We prove that $|G| < 821.37g(\mathcal{X})^{7/4}$. The proof of our result is based on the classification of automorphism groups of curves of even genus in positive characteristic, see \cite{giulietti-korchmaro…
We give several results concerning the connected component ${\rm Aut}_X^0$ of the automorphism scheme of a proper variety $X$ over a field, such as its behaviour with respect to birational modifications, normalization, restrictions to closed subschemes and deformations. Then, we apply our results to study the automorphism scheme of not necessarily Jacobian elliptic surfaces $f: X \to C$ over algebraically closed fields, generalizing work of Rudakov and Shafarevich, while giving counterexamples to some of their statements. We bound the dimension $h^0(X,T_X)$ of the space of global vector fields…
We consider the following conjecture: if X is a smooth projective variety over a field of characteristic zero, then there is a dense set of reductions X_s of X to positive characteristic such that the action of the Frobenius morphism on the top Zariski cohomology of the structure sheaf of X_s is bijective. We also consider a conjecture relating certain invariants of singularities in characteristic zero (the multiplier ideals) with invariants in positive characteristic (the test ideals). We prove that the former conjecture implies the latter one in the case of ambient nonsingular varieties.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety defined over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic $p$ whose tangent bundle is nef. We prove that $X$ admits a smooth morphism $X \to M$ such that the fibers are Fano varieties with nef tangent bundle and $T_M$ is numerically flat. We also prove that extremal contractions exist as smooth morphisms. As an application, we prove that, if the Frobenius morphism can be lifted modulo $p^2$, then $X$ admits, up to a finite étale Galois cover, a smooth morphism onto an ordinary abelian variety whose fibers are products of projective spaces.
We consider the following conjecture: if X is a smooth projective variety over a field of characteristic zero, then there is a dense set of reductions X_s to positive characteristic such that the action of the Frobenius morphism on the top Zariski cohomology of the structure sheaf on X_s is bijective. We also consider the conjecture relating the multiplier ideals of an ideal J on a nonsingular variety in characteristic zero, and the test ideals of the reductions of J to positive characteristic. We prove that the latter conjecture implies the former one. The converse was proved in a joint paper…
When $p$ is inert in the quadratic imaginary field $E$ and $m<n$, unitary Shimura varieties of signature $(n,m)$ and a hyperspecial level subgroup at $p$, carry a natural foliation of height 1 and rank $m^2$ in the tangent bundle of their special fiber $S$. We study this foliation and show that it acquires singularities at deep Ekedahl-Oort strata, but these singularities are resolved if we pass to a natural smooth moduli problem $S^\sharp$, a successive blow-up of $S$. Over the ($μ$-)ordinary locus we relate the foliation to Moonen's generalized Serre-Tate coordinates. We study the quotient o…
In this paper, we study the ordinarity of an isotrivial elliptic surface defined over a field of positive characteristic. If an isotrivial elliptic fibration $π:X \to C$ is given, $X$ is ordinary when the common fiber of $π$ is ordinary and a certain finite cover of the base $C$ is ordinary. By this result, we may obtain the ordinary reduction theorem for some kinds of isotrivial elliptic fibrations.
The ordinariness of elliptic curves is essential in proving various expected properties of elliptic curves in positive characteristic and can be extended to algebraic curves of arbitrary genus. The present paper deals with another kind of extension, i.e., ordinariness of dormant $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-opers, or more generally, dormant $\mathfrak{sl}_n$-opers. We prove that, for dormant $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-opers on elliptic curves, this notion is essentially equivalent to the classical ordinariness. Moreover, the main result of the present paper asserts that the pull-back of an ordinary dormant $\math…
Let $D$ be the ring of Grothendieck differential operators of the ring $R$ of polynomials in $d\geq3$ variables with coefficients in a perfect field of positive characteristic $p.$ We compute the $D$-module length of the first local cohomology module $H^1_f(R)$ of $R$ with respect to an irreducible polynomial $f$ with an isolated singularity, for $p$ large enough. The expression we give is in terms of the Frobenius action on the top coherent cohomology of the structure sheaf of the exceptional divisor of a resolution of the singularity. Our proof rests on a tight closure computation due to Har…
Suppose $X$ is a smooth projective connected curve defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$ and $B \subset X$ is a finite, possibly empty, set of points. Booher and Cais determined a lower bound for the $a$-number of a $\mathbf{Z}/p \mathbf{Z}$-cover of $X$ with branch locus $B$. For odd primes $p$, in most cases it is not known if this lower bound is realized. In this note, when $X$ is ordinary, we use formal patching to reduce that question to a computational question about $a$-numbers of $\mathbf{Z}/p\mathbf{Z}$-covers of the affine line. As an application, when $p…
Let $E$ be an ordinary elliptic curve over a finite field and $g$ be a positive integer. Under some technical assumptions, we give an algorithm to span the isomorphism classes of principally polarized abelian varieties in the isogeny class of $E^g$. The varieties are first described as hermitian lattices over (not necessarily maximal) quadratic orders and then geometrically in terms of their algebraic theta null point. We also show how to algebraically compute Siegel modular forms of even weight given as polynomials in the theta constants by a careful choice of an affine lift of the theta null…
Suppose $X$ is a smooth projective connected curve defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$ and $B \subset X(k)$ is a finite, possibly empty, set of points. The Newton polygon of a degree $p$ Galois cover of $X$ with branch locus $B$ depends on the ramification invariants of the cover. When $X$ is ordinary, for every possible set of branch points and ramification invariants, we prove that there exists such a cover whose Newton polygon is minimal or close to minimal.
Kuga and Satake associate with every polarized complex K3 surface (X,L) a complex abelian variety called the Kuga-Satake abelian variety of (X,L). We use this construction to define morphisms between moduli spaces of polarized K3 surface with certain level structures and moduli spaces of polarized abelian varieties with level structure over C. In this note we study these morphisms. We prove first that they are defined over finite extensions of Q. Then we show that they extend in positive characteristic. In this way we give an indirect construction of Kuga-Satake abelian varieties over an arbit…
