We introduce a certain birational invariant of a polarized algebraic variety and use that to obtain upper bounds for the counting functions of rational points on algebraic varieties. Using our theorem, we obtain new upper bounds of Manin type for 28 deformation types of smooth Fano $3$-folds of Picard rank $\geq 2$ following Mori-Mukai's classification. We also find new upper bounds for polarized K3 surfaces $S$ of Picard rank $1$ using Bayer-Macrì's result on the nef cone of the Hilbert scheme of two points on $S$.
Let C be a curve of genus at least 2 imbedded in a product of elliptic curves. We give an explicit upper bound for the points in the intersection of C with the union of all algebraic subgroups of a certain codimension. As a corollary we obtain an explicit upper bound for the height of the rational points for some families of curves and an explicit version of the Manin-Dem'janenko method in products of elliptic curves
We present a new proof of the Manin-Mumford conjecture about torsion points on algebraic subvarieties of abelian varieties. Our principle, which admits other applications, is to view torsion points as rational points on a complex torus and then compare (i) upper bounds for the number of rational points on a transcendental analytic variety (Bombieri-Pila-Wilkie) and (ii) lower bounds for the degree of a torsion point (Masser), after taking conjugates. In order to be able to deal with (i), we discuss (Thm. 2.1) the semi-algebraic curves contained in an analytic variety supposed invariant for tra…
We introduce the split torsor method to count rational points of bounded height on Fano varieties. As an application, we prove Manin's conjecture for all nonsplit quartic del Pezzo surfaces of type $\mathbf A_3+\mathbf A_1$ over arbitrary number fields. The counting problem on the split torsor is solved in the framework of o-minimal structures.
An asymptotic formula is established for the number of rational points of bounded height on a non-singular quartic del Pezzo surface with a conic bundle structure.
We prove Manin's conjecture for a singular cubic surface S with a singularity of type E6. If U is the open subset of S obtained by deleting the unique line from S, then the number of rational points in U with anticanonical height bounded by B behaves asymptotically as cB(log B)^6, where the constant c agrees with the one conjectured by Peyre.
We prove Manin's conjecture for two del Pezzo surfaces of degree four which are split over Q and whose singularity types are respectively 3A_1 and A_1+A_2. For this, we study a certain restricted divisor function and use a result about the equidistribution of its values in arithmetic progressions. In this task, Weil's bound for Kloosterman sums plays a key role.
Manin's conjecture predicts the number of rational points of bounded height on a Fano variety. To make this prediction precise, it is necessary to remove a thin subset of rational points. Peyre has tentatively proposed replacing this subset by the set of points where a certain freeness function he defined takes small values. We show that this proposal fails in the case of $\operatorname{Hilb}^2(\mathbb P^n)$, because the usual thin subset, consisting of rational points that lift to a certain double cover, contains many points with relatively large freeness.
We prove a lower bound that agrees with Manin's prediction for the number of rational points of bounded height on the Fermat cubic surface. As an application we provide a simple counterexample to Manin's conjecture over the rationals.
We consider the moduli space of abelian varieties with two marked points and a frame of the relative de Rham cohomolgy with boundary at these points compatible with its mixed Hodge structure. Such a moduli space gives a natural algebro-geometric framework for higher genus quasi Jacobi forms of index zero and their differential equations which are given as vector fields. In the case of elliptic curves we compute explicitly the Gauss-Manin connection and such vector fields.
We establish sharp upper and lower bounds for the number of rational points of bounded anticanonical height on a smooth bihomogeneous threefold defined over Q and of bidegree (1, 2). These bounds are in agreement with Manin's conjecture.
Given systems of two (inhomogeneous) quadratic equations in four variables, it is known that the Hasse principle for integral points may fail. Sometimes this failure can be explained by some integral Brauer-Manin obstruction. We study the existence of a non-trivial algebraic part of the Brauer group for a family of such systems and show that the failure of the integral Hasse principle due to an algebraic Brauer-Manin obstruction is rare, as for a generic choice of a system the algebraic part of the Brauer-group is trivial. We use resolvent constructions to give quantitative upper bounds on the…
We define a notion of height for rational points with respect to a vector bundle on a proper algebraic stack with finite diagonal over a global field, which generalizes the usual notion for rational points on projective varieties. We explain how to compute this height for various stacks of interest (for instance: classifying stacks of finite groups, symmetric products of varieties, moduli stacks of abelian varieties, weighted projective spaces). In many cases our uniform definition reproduces ways already in use for measuring the complexity of rational points, while in others it is something n…
A conjecture of Manin predicts the asymptotic distribution of rational points of bounded height on Fano varieties. In this paper we use conic bundles to obtain correct lower bounds or a wide class of surfaces over number fields for which the conjecture is still far from being proved. For example, we obtain the conjectured lower bound of Manin's conjecture for any del Pezzo surface whose Picard rank is sufficiently large, or for arbitrary del Pezzo surfaces after possibly an extension of the ground field of small degree.
We introduce a general strategy for proving quantitative and uniform bounds on the number of common points of height zero for a pair of inequivalent height functions on $\mathbb{P}^1(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}).$ We apply this strategy to prove a conjecture of Bogomolov, Fu, and Tschinkel asserting uniform bounds on the number of common torsion points of elliptic curves in the case of two Legendre curves over $\mathbb{C}$. As a consequence, we obtain two uniform bounds for a two-dimensional family of genus 2 curves: a uniform Manin-Mumford bound for the family over $\mathbb{C}$, and a uniform Bogom…
Manin's conjecture for the asymptotic behavior of the number of rational points of bounded height on del Pezzo surfaces can be approached through universal torsors. We prove several auxiliary results for the estimation of the number of integral points in certain regions on universal torsors. As an application, we prove Manin's conjecture for a singular quartic del Pezzo surface.
It is well-known that the Hasse principle holds for quadric hypersurfaces. The Hasse principle fails for integral points on smooth quadric hypersurfaces of dimension 2 but the failure can be completely explained by the Brauer-Manin obstruction. We investigate how often the family of quadric hypersurfaces $ax^2 + by^2 +cz^2 = n$ has a Brauer-Manin obstruction. We improve previous bounds of Mitankin.
Let $n$ be a positive multiple of $4$. We establish an asymptotic formula for the number of rational points of bounded height on singular cubic hypersurfaces $S_n$ defined by $$ x^3=(y_1^2 + \cdots + y_n^2)z . $$ This result is new in two aspects: first, it can be viewed as a modest start on the study of density of rational points on those singular cubic hypersurfaces which are not covered by the classical theorems of Davenport or Heath-Brown; second, it proves Manin's conjecture for singular cubic hypersurfaces $S_n$ defined above.
Manin's conjecture predicts the asymptotic behavior of the number of rational points of bounded height on algebraic varieties. For toric varieties, it was proved by Batyrev and Tschinkel via height zeta functions and an application of the Poisson formula. An alternative approach to Manin's conjecture via universal torsors was used so far mainly over the field Q of rational numbers. In this note, we give a proof of Manin's conjecture over the Gaussian rational numbers Q(i) and over other imaginary quadratic number fields with class number 1 for the singular toric cubic surface defined by t^3=xy…
We discuss Manin's conjecture concerning the distribution of rational points of bounded height on Del Pezzo surfaces, and its refinement by Peyre, and explain applications of universal torsors to counting problems. To illustrate the method, we provide a proof of Manin's conjecture for the unique split singular quartic Del Pezzo surface with a singularity of type D4. (Lectures at the summer school "Equidistribution in number theory", Montreal, August 2005)
We prove $p$-adic versions of a classical result in arithmetic geometry stating that an irreducible subvariety of an abelian variety with dense torsion has to be the translate of a subgroup by a torsion point. We do so in the context of certain rigid analytic spaces and formal groups over a $p$-adic field $K$ or its ring of integers $R$, respectively. In particular, we show that the rigidity results for algebraic functions underlying the so-called Manin-Mumford Conjecture generalize to suitable $p$-adic analytic functions. In the formal setting, this approach leads us to uncover purely $p$-adi…
We study the intersection of an algebraic variety with the maximal compact subgroup of a universal vectorial extension of a product of elliptic curves. For this intersection we show a Manin-Mumford type statement. This answers some questions posed by Corvaja-Masser-Zannier which arose in connection with their investigation of the intersection of a curve with real analytic subgroups of various algebraic groups. They prove finiteness in the situation of a single elliptic curve. Using Khovanskii's zero-estimates combined with a stratification result of Gabrielov-Vorobjov and recent work of the au…
We prove Manin's conjecture concerning the distribution of rational points of bounded height, and its refinement by Peyre, for wonderful compactifications of semi-simple algebraic groups over number fields. The proof proceeds via the study of the associated height zeta function and its spectral expansion.
We complete the study of points of bounded height on irreducible non-normal cubic surfaces by doing the point count on the cubic surface $W$ given by $t_0^2 t_2 = t_1^2 t_3$ over any number field. We show that the order of growth agrees with a conjecture by Batyrev and Manin and that the constant reflects the geometry of the variety as predicted by a conjecture of Batyrev and Tschinkel. We then provide the point count for its symmetric square $\mathrm{Sym}^2 W$. Although we can explain the main term of the counting function, the Batyrev--Manin conjecture is only satisfied after removing a thin…
We estimate the growth rate of the function which counts the number of torsion points of order at most $T$ on an algebraic subvariety of the algebraic torus $\mathbb G_m^n$ over some algebraically closed field. We prove a general upper bound which is sharp, and characterize the subvarieties for which the growth rate is maximal. For all other subvarieties there is a better bound which is power saving compared to the general one. Our result includes asymptotic formulas in characteristic zero where we use Laurent's Theorem, the Manin-Mumford Conjecture. However, we also obtain new upper bounds fo…
We establish an asymptotic formula for the number of points of bounded height on a singular hypersurface of the triprojective space. We will see that the final result is in accordance with Batyrev-Manin conjecture. The method used is a version of the circle method developped by Heath Brown and used by Robbiani for counting points of bounded height on an hypersurface of biprojective space. ----- Nous établissons ici une formule asymptotique pour le nombre de points de hauteur bornée sur une hypersurface singulière de l'espace triprojectif. To study problems involving heights as, eg, Manin's conjecture on the number of points of bounded height on an algebraic variety defined over a number field, it is desirable to have a good normalization of these height functions. We show how one can define these on fiber spaces. The construction uses the notion of an ``arithmetic torsor'', which is the analogue for a general algebraic group of adding a hermitian metric at infinity for vector bundles.
We demonstrate the Batyrev-Manin Conjecture for the number of points of bounded height on hypersurfaces of some toric varieties.. The method used is inspired by the one developed by Schindler for the study the case of hypersurfaces of biprojective spaces. This method is based on the Hardy-Littlewood circle method. We prove the Manin-Peyre conjecture for the number of rational points of bounded height outside of a thin subset on a family of Fano threefolds of bidegree (1,2). The proof uses a mixture of the circle method and techniques from the geometry of numbers.
We demonstrate the Batyrev-Manin Conjecture for the number of points of bounded height on hypersurfaces of some toric varieties whose rank of the Picard group is 2. Let $C$ be an algebraic curve embedded transversally in a power $E^N$ of an elliptic curve $E$. In this article we produce a good explicit bound for the height of all the algebraic points on $C$ contained in the union of all proper algebraic subgroups of $E^N$. The method gives a totally explicit version of the Manin-Dam'janenko Theorem in the elliptic case and it is a generalisation of previous results only proved when $E$ does not have Complex Multiplication.
The principle of Batyrev and Manin and its variants gives a precise conjectural interpretation for the dominant term for the number of points of bounded height on an algebraic variety for which the opposite of the canonical line bundle is sufficiently positive. As was clearly shown by the counter-example of Batyrev and Tschinkel, the implementation of this principle requires the exclusion of accumulating domains which, are found most of the time by using an induction procedure on the dimension of the variety. However this method does not yield a direct characterisation of the points to be excl…
We obtain optimal lower bounds for moments of theta functions. On the other hand, we also get new upper bounds on individual theta values and moments of theta functions on average over primes. The upper bounds are based on bounds of character sums and in particular on a modification of some recent results of M. Z. Garaev.
We use an old elementary arithmetic argument to find new upper and lower bounds for Sylvester's denumerant function. These bounds are tight enough to get the asymptotic behavior of the denumerant.
We look at upper bounds for the count of certain primes related to the Fermat numbers $F_n=2^{2^n}+1$ called elite primes. We first note an oversight in a result of Krizek, Luca and Somer and give the corrected, slightly weaker upper bound. We then assume the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis for Dirichlet L functions and obtain a stronger conditional upper bound.
Let $N_n(X)$ denote the number of degree $n$ number fields with discriminant bounded by $X$. In this note, we improve the best known upper bounds on $N_n(X)$, finding that $N_n(X) = O(X^{ c (\log n)^2})$ for an explicit constant $c$.
Ellenberg and Gijswijt gave the best known asymptotic upper bound for the cardinality of subsets of $\mathbb F_q^n$ without 3-term arithmetic progressions. We improve this bound by a factor $\sqrt{n}$. In the case $q=3$, we also obtain more explicit upper bounds for the Cap Set Problem.
Naslund used Tao's slice rank bounding method to give new exponential upper bounds for the Erdős--Ginzburg-Ziv constant of finite Abelian groups of high rank. In our short manuscript we improve slightly Naslund's upper bounds. We extend Naslund's results and prove new exponential upper bounds for the Erdős--Ginzburg-Ziv constant of arbitrary finite Abelian groups. Our main results depend on a conjecture about Property D.
