The construction introduced by Gross, Hacking and Keel allows one to construct a formal mirror family to a pair $(S,D)$ where $S$ is a smooth rational projective surface and $D$ a certain type of Weil divisor supporting an ample or anti-ample class. In that paper they proved two convergence results. Firstly that if the intersection matrix of $D$ is not negative semi-definite then the family they construct lifts to an algebraic family. Secondly they prove that if the intersection matrix is negative definite then their construction lifts along certain analytic strata on the base, and then over a formal neighbourhood of this. In the original version of that paper they claimed that if the intersection matrix were negative semi-definite then family in fact extends over an analytic neighbourhood of the origin but gave an incorrect proof.
In this paper we correct this error. We explain how the general Gross-Siebert program can be used to reduce construction of the mirror to such a surface to calculating certain relative Gromov-Witten invariants. We then relate these invariants to the invariants of a new space where we can find explicit formulae for the invariants. From this we deduce analytic convergence of the mirror family, at least when the original surface has an $I_4$ fibre.
We give a full exceptional collection in the triangulated category of singularities in the sense of Orlov for a hypersurface singularity of Fermat type, and discuss its relation with homological mirror symmetry for simple elliptic hypersurface singularities.
In this paper, the numbers of rational curves on general complete intersection Calabi-Yau threefolds in complex projective spaces are computed up to degree six. The results are all in agreement with the predictions made from mirror symmetry.
A conjecture expressing genus 1 Gromov-Witten invariants in mirror-theoretic terms of semi-simple Frobenius structures and complex oscillating integrals is formulated. The proof of the conjecture is given for torus-equivariant Gromov - Witten invariants of compact Kähler manifolds with isolated fixed points and for concave bundle spaces over such manifolds. Several results on genus 0 Gromov - Witten theory include: a non-linear Serre duality theorem, its application to the genus 0 mirror conjecture, a mirror theorem for concave bundle spaces over toric manifolds generalizing a recent result of…
We consider K3 surfaces which are double cover of rational elliptic surfaces. The former are endowed with a natural elliptic fibration, which is induced by the latter. There are also other elliptic fibrations on such K3 surfaces, which are necessarily induced by special linear systems on the rational elliptic surfaces. We describe these linear systems. In particular, we observe that every conic bundle on the rational surface induces a genus 1 fibration on the K3 surface and we classify the singular fibers of the genus 1 fibration on the K3 surface it terms of singular fibers and special curves…
The paper contains a proof that elliptic genus of a Calabi-Yau manifold is a Jacobi form, finds in which dimensions the elliptic genus is determined by the Hodge numbers and shows that elliptic genera of a Calabi-Yau hypersurface in a toric variety and its mirror coincide up to sign. The proof of the mirror property is based on the extension of elliptic genus to Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric varieties with Gorenstein singularities.
We propose and prove a mirror theorem for the elliptic quasimap invariants for smooth Calabi-Yau complete intersections in projective spaces. The theorem combined with the wall-crossing formula appeared in paper (arXiv:1308.6377) implies mirror theorems of Zinger and Popa for the elliptic Gromov-Witten invariants for those varieties. This paper and the wall-crossing formula provide a unified framework for the mirror theory of rational and elliptic Gromov-Witten invariants.
We derive an efficient algorithm to find solutions to Euler's concordant form problem and rational points on elliptic curves associated with this problem.
We study a two-parameter family of K3 surfaces of (generic) Picard rank $18$ which is mirror to the $18$-dimensional family of elliptically fibered K3 surfaces with a section. Members of this family are given as compactifications of hypersurfaces in three dimensional algebraic torus given by equations $y^2+z+z^{-1} + x^3 + ax +b =0$ where $a$ and $b$ are the parameters of the family. It follows from previous work of Morrison that these surfaces are double covers of Kummer surfaces coming from products of elliptic curves, and we establish this connection explicitly. This in turn provides a desc…
We compute the nef cone of the Hilbert scheme of points on a general rational elliptic surface. As a consequence of our computation, we show that the Morrison-Kawamata cone conjecture holds for these nef cones.
We study K3 surfaces over a number field $k$ which are double covers of extremal rational elliptic surfaces. We provide a list of all elliptic fibrations on certain K3 surfaces together with the degree of a field extension over which each genus one fibration is defined and admits a section. We show that the latter depends, in general, on the action of the cover involution on the fibers of the genus 1 fibration.
Wan conjectures that if $X$ and $Y$ form a strong mirror pair of Calabi-Yau varieties over a finite field $F_q$ with $q$ elements, then X and Y have the same number of $F_{q^k}$-rational points modulo $q^k$. We prove this conjecture under the condition that $Y$ can be obtained from $X$ through quotient construction.
In this paper we determine a minimal set of generators for the Cox rings of extremal rational elliptic surfaces. Moreover, we develop a technique for computing the ideal of relations between them which allows, in all but three cases, to provide a presentation of the Cox ring.
We study the groups of automorphisms of rational algebraic surfaces that admit a relatively minimal pencil of curves of arithmetic genus one over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic. In particular, we classify such surfaces that admit non-trivial automorphisms that act trivially on the Picard group. As an application, we classify classical Enriques surfaces in characteristic $2$ that admit non-trivial numerically trivial automorphisms.
In this paper, we continue the study of the relation between rational points of rational elliptic surfaces and plane curves. As an application, we give first examples of Zariski pairs of cubic-line arrangements that do not involve inflectional tangent lines.
Let $X$ be a rational elliptic surface with elliptic fibration $π:X\to\Bbb{P}^1$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of any characteristic. Given a conic bundle $φ:X\to\Bbb{P}^1$ we use numerical arguments to classify all possible fibers of $φ$ and study the interplay between singular fibers of $π$ and $φ$.
We find that for many Calabi-Yau threefolds with elliptic or genus one fibrations mirror symmetry factorizes between the fiber and the base of the fibration. In the simplest examples, the generic CY elliptic fibration over any toric base surface $B$ that supports an elliptic Calabi-Yau threefold has a mirror that is an elliptic fibration over a dual toric base surface $\tilde{B}$ that is related through toric geometry to the line bundle $-6K_B$. The Kreuzer-Skarke database includes all these examples and gives a wide range of other more complicated constructions where mirror symmetry also fact…
We study the Seshadri constants on geometrically ruled surfaces. The unstable case is completely solved. Moreover, we give some bounds for the stable case. We apply these results to compute the Seshadri constant of the rational and elliptic ruled surfaces. Both cases are completely determined. The elliptic case provides an interesting picture of how particular is the behavior of the Seshadri constants.
The elliptic quasimap potential function is explicitly calculated for Calabi-Yau complete intersections in projective spaces by Kim and Lho. We extend this result to local Calabi-Yau varieties. Using this as well as the wall crossing formula by Ciocan-Fontanine and Kim, we can calculate the elliptic Gromov-Witten potential function.
We prove that any non-isotrivial elliptic K3 surface over an algebraically closed field $k$ of arbitrary characteristic contains infinitely many rational curves. In the case when $\mathrm{char}(k)\neq 2,3$, we prove this result for any elliptic K3 surface. When the characteristic of $k$ is zero, this result is due to the work of Bogomolov-Tschinkel and Hassett.
Miranda and Persson classified all extremal rational elliptic surfaces in characteristic zero. We show that each surface in Miranda and Persson's classification has an integral model with good reduction everywhere (except for those of type X_{11}(j), which is an exceptional case), and that every extremal rational elliptic surface over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p > 0 can be obtained by reducing one of these integral models mod p.
An algebro-geometric setting for the study of the Painlevé VI equation is introduced. Hamiltonian form of the equation is realized on a twisted relative cotangent bundle to the universal elliptic curve with labelled points of order two. Relations with the theory of elliptic functions and the quantum cohomology of projective plane are discussed.
We develop the quantum Kodaira-Spencer theory on the elliptic curve and establish the corresponding higher genus B-model. We show that the partition functions of the higher genus B-model on the elliptic curve are almost holomorphic modular forms, which can be identified with partition functions of descendant Gromov-Witten invariants on the mirror elliptic curve. This gives the first compact Calabi-Yau example where mirror symmetry is established at all genera.
We construct $13$ projective $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial Fano toric varieties and show that for any minimal rational elliptic surface $X$ there is one such toric variety $Z_X$ and a divisor class $δ_X\in {\rm Cl}(Z_X)$ such that the number of $(-1)$-curves of $X$ equals the dimension of the Riemann-Roch space of $δ_X$. As an application we give the number of $(-1)$-curves of any such elliptic fibration of Halphen index $2$.
In this paper, we directly derive generalized mirror transformation of projective hypersurfaces up to degree 3 genus 0 Gromov-Witten invariants by comparing Kontsevich localization formula with residue integral representation of the virtual structure constants. We can easily generalize our method for rational curves of arbitrary degree except for combinatorial complexities.
Let $V_1$ be the Fano threefold given as a hypersurface of degree 6 in $P(1,1,1,2,3)$ (over a number field $K$). Then there exists a finite extension $K'/K$ such that the set of $K'$-rational points of $X$ is Zariski dense.
We show that on every elliptic K3 surface $X$ there are rational curves $(R_i)_{i\in \mathbb{N}}$ such that $R_i^2 \to \infty$, i.e., of unbounded arithmetic genus. Moreover, we show that the union of the lifts of these curves to $\mathbb{P}(Ω_X)$ is dense in the Zariski topology. As an application we give a simple proof of a theorem of Kobayashi in the elliptic case, i.e., there are no globally defined symmetric differential forms.
In this paper we calculate the elliptic genus of certain complete intersections in products of projective spaces. We show that it is equal to the elliptic genus of the Landau-Ginzburg models that are, according to Hori and Vafa, mirror partners of these complete intersections. This provides additional evidence of the validity of their construction.
We apply the homological mirror symmetry for elliptic curves to the study of indefinite theta series. We prove that every such series corresponding to a quadratic form of signature (1,1) can be expressed in terms of theta series associated with split quadratic forms and the usual theta series. We also show that indefinite theta series corresponding to univalued Massey products between line bundles on elliptic curve are modular.
We prove a tropical mirror symmetry theorem for descendant Gromov-Witten invariants of the elliptic curve, generalizing the tropical mirror symmetry theorem for Hurwitz numbers of the elliptic curve, Theorem 2.20 in [Böhm J., Bringmann K., Buchholz A., Markwig H., J. Reine Angew. Math. 732 (2017), 211-246, arXiv:1309.5893]. For the case of the elliptic curve, the tropical version of mirror symmetry holds on a fine level and easily implies the equality of the generating series of descendant Gromov-Witten invariants of the elliptic curve to Feynman integrals. To prove tropical mirror symmetry fo…
This paper deals with a study of the rational elliptic surfaces whose $J$-invariant functions are of degree one. Almost all of these elliptic surfaces have four singular fibers, while the remaining surfaces have only three singular fibers. The moduli space of these elliptic surfaces is canonically isomorphic to the projective line by taking the $J$-values for a certain fixed type of singular fibers. Over the moduli space, we discuss our elliptic surfaces, and investigate how their sections are described by the parameter of the moduli space. By using a covering space of the moduli, we construct…
We determine and list all possible configurations of singular fibres on rational elliptic surfaces in characteristic three. In total, we find that 267 distinct configurations exist. This result complements Miranda and Persson's classification in characteristic zero, and Lang's classification in characteristic two.
We describe an isomorphism of categories conjectured by Kontsevich. If $M$ and $\widetilde{M}$ are mirror pairs then the conjectural equivalence is between the derived category of coherent sheaves on $M$ and a suitable version of Fukaya's category of Lagrangian submanifolds on $\widetilde{M}.$ We prove this equivalence when $M$ is an elliptic curve and $\widetilde{M}$ is its dual curve, exhibiting the dictionary in detail.
In this article, we study the geometry of plane curves obtained by three sections and another section given as their sum on certain rational elliptic surfaces. We make use of Mumford representations of semi-reduced divisors in order to study the geometry of sections. As a result, we are able to give new proofs for some classical results on singular plane quartics and their bitangent lines.
In this paper we complete the classification of the elliptic fibrations on K3 surfaces which admit a non-symplectic involution acting trivially on the Néron--Severi group. We use the geometric method introduced by Oguiso and moreover we provide a geometric construction of the fibrations classified. If the non-symplectic involution fixes at least one curve of genus 1, we relate all the elliptic fibrations on the K3 surface with either elliptic fibrations or generalized conic bundles on rational elliptic surfaces. This description allows us to write the Weierstrass equations of the elliptic fibr…
We show that the moduli space of rational elliptic surfaces admitting a section is locally a complex hyperbolic variety of dimension eight. We compare its Satake-Baily-Borel compactification with a compactification obtained by means of geometric invariant theory, considered by Miranda.
We give a mathematical account of a recent string theory calculation which predicts the number of rational curves on the generic quintic threefold. Our account involves the interpretation of Yukawa couplings in terms of variations of Hodge structure, a new $q$-expansion principle for functions on the moduli space of Calabi-Yau manifolds, and the ``mirror symmetry'' phenomenon recently observed by string theorists.
We verify the Morrison--Kawamata conjecture for a certain class of rational threefolds, namely blowups of P^3 in the base locus of a net of quadrics with no reducible members. This seems to be the first verified case of the conjecture for klt Calabi--Yau pairs in dimension 3 with non-zero boundary divisor.
We prove that a very general elliptic surface $\mathcal{E}\to\mathbb{P}^1$ over the complex numbers with a section and with geometric genus $p_g\ge2$ contains no rational curves other than the section and components of singular fibers. Equivalently, if $E/\mathbb{C}(t)$ is a very general elliptic curve of height $d\ge3$ and if $L$ is a finite extension of $\mathbb{C}(t)$ with $L\cong\mathbb{C}(u)$, then the Mordell-Weil group $E(L)=0$.
It is well-known that del Pezzo surfaces of degree $9-n$ one-to-one correspond to flat $E_n$ bundles over an elliptic curve. In this paper, we construct $ADE$ bundles over a broader class of rational surfaces which we call $ADE$ surfaces, and extend the above correspondence to all flat $G$ bundles over an elliptic curve, where $G$ is any simply laced, simple, compact and simply-connected Lie group. In the sequel, we will construct $G$ bundles for non-simply laced Lie group $G$ over these rational surfaces, and extend the above correspondence to non-simply laced cases.
We study mirror symmetry of families of elliptic K3 surfaces with elliptic fibers of type $E_6,~E_7$ and $E_8$. We consider a moduli space $\mathsf{T}$ of the mirror K3 surfaces enhanced with the choice of differential forms. We show that coordinates on $\mathsf{T}$ are given by the ring of quasi modular forms in two variables, with modular groups adapted to the fiber type. We furthermore introduce an algebraic group $\mathsf{G}$ which acts on $\mathsf{T}$ from the right and construct its Lie algebra $\mathrm{Lie}(\mathsf{G})$. We prove that the extended Lie algebra generated by $\mathrm{Lie}(…
We show homological mirror symmetry results relating coherent analytic sheaves on some complex elliptic surfaces and objects of certain Fukaya categories. We first define the notion of a non-algebraic Landau-Ginzburg model on $\mathbb{R} \times S^1$ and its associated Fukaya category, and show that non-Kähler sur-faces obtained by performing two logarithmic transformations to the product of the projective plane and an elliptic curve have non-algebraic Landau-Ginzburg models as their mirror spaces; this class of surface includes the classical Hopf surface $S^1\times S^3$ and other elliptic prim…
It is a classical result (apparently due to Tate) that all elliptic curves with a torsion point of order n ($4 \leq n \leq 10$, or n = 12) lie in a one-parameter family. However, this fact does not appear to have been used ever for computing the torsion of an elliptic curve. We present here a extremely down-to-earth algorithm using the existence of such a family.
We study mirror symmetry (A-side vs B-side) in the framework of quantum differential systems. We focuse on the logarithmic and non-resonant case, which describes the geometric situation. We show that quantum differential systems provide a good framework in order to generalize the construction of the rational structure on the A-side given by Katzarkov, Kontsevitch and Pantev for the projective spaces. As an application, we compute the rational structure obtained in this way on the orbifold cohomology of weighted projective spaces. As an example we also calculate, using quantum differential syst…
We prove the Doran-Harder-Thompson conjecture in the case of elliptic curves by using ideas from SYZ mirror symmetry. The conjecture claims that when a Calabi-Yau manifold $X$ degenerates to a union of two quasi-Fano manifolds (Tyurin degeneration), a mirror Calabi-Yau manifold of $X$ can be constructed by gluing the two mirror Landau-Ginzburg models of the quasi-Fano manifolds. The two crucial ideas in our proof are to obtain a complex structure by gluing the underlying affine manifolds and to construct the theta functions from the Landau-Ginzburg superpotentials.
This paper is concerned with the construction of extremal elliptic K3 surfaces. It gives a complete treatment of those fibrations which can be derived from rational elliptic surfaces by easy manipulations of their Weierstrass equations. In particular, this approach enables us to find explicit equations for 38 semi-stable extremal elliptic K3 fibrations, 32 of which are indeed defined over the rationals. They are realized as pull-back of non-semi-stable extremal rational elliptic surfaces via base change. This is related to work of J. Top and N. Yui which exhibited the same procedure for the se…
Mirror symmetry relates Gromov-Witten invariants of an elliptic curve with certain integrals over Feynman graphs. We prove a tropical generalization of mirror symmetry for elliptic curves, i.e., a statement relating certain labeled Gromov-Witten invariants of a tropical elliptic curve to more refined Feynman integrals. This result easily implies the tropical analogue of the mirror symmetry statement mentioned above and, using the necessary Correspondence Theorem, also the mirror symmetry statement itself. In this way, our tropical generalization leads to an alternative proof of mirror symmetry…
A simple elliptic singularity of type $E_N^{(1,1)}$ ($N=6,7,8$) can be described in terms of a marginal deformation of an invertible polynomial $W$. In the papers \cite{KS} and \cite{MR} the authors proved a mirror symmetry statement for some particular choices of $W$ and used it to prove quasi-modularity of Gromov-Witten invariants for certain elliptic orbifold $\mathbb{P}^1$s. However, the choice of the polynomial $W$ and its marginal deformation $ϕ_μ$ are not unique. In this paper, we investigate the global mirror symmetry phenomenon for the one-parameter family $W+σϕ_μ$. In each case the m…
We give a systematic method to calculate some homological data from the global monodromy of a topological elliptic surface. We apply this method to the cases 1) the transcendental lattice of an extremal elliptic K3 surface, 2) the torsion part of Mordell-Weil group of a general elliptic surface, and 3) the Mordell-Weil lattice of a rational elliptic surface. We present possible list of global monodromies of rational elliptic surface and extremal elliptic $K3$ surface which reproduce to the classification obtained by Oguiso-Shioda and Shimada-Zhang respectively.
We consider a mirror symmetry of simple elliptic singularities. In particular, we construct isomorphisms of Frobenius manifolds among the one from the Gromov--Witten theory of a weighted projective line, the one from the theory of primitive forms for a universal unfolding of a simple elliptic singularity and the one from the invariant theory for an elliptic Weyl group. As a consequence, we give a geometric interpretation of the Fourier coefficients of an eta product considered by K. Saito.
For a large class of isotrivial rational elliptic surfaces (with section), we show that the set of rational points is dense for the Zariski topology, by carefully studying variations of root numbers among the fibers of these surfaces. We also prove that these surfaces satisfy a variant of weak-weak approximation. Our results are conditional on the finiteness of Tate-Shafarevich groups for elliptic curves over the field of rational numbers.
We consider a pair of quiver varieties (X;X') related by 3d mirror symmetry, where X =T*Gr(k,n) is the cotangent bundle of the Grassmannian of k-planes of n-dimensional space. We give formulas for the elliptic stable envelopes on both sides. We show an existence of an equivariant elliptic cohomology class on X $\times$ X' (the Mother function) whose restrictions to X and X' are the elliptic stable envelopes of those varieties. This implies, that the restriction matrices of the elliptic stable envelopes for X and X' are equal after transposition and identification of the equivariant parameters …
This paper is a follow up of arXiv:1702.02255 [math.NT]. We construct explicitly versal families of elliptic curves with rational points of order 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 respectively.
We give a characterization of all complete smooth toric varieties whose rational homotopy is of elliptic type. All such toric varieties of complex dimension not more than three are explicitly described.
