This paper is concerned with the construction of extremal elliptic K3 surfaces. It gives a complete treatment of those fibrations which can be derived from rational elliptic surfaces by easy manipulations of their Weierstrass equations. In particular, this approach enables us to find explicit equations for 38 semi-stable extremal elliptic K3 fibrations, 32 of which are indeed defined over the rationals. They are realized as pull-back of non-semi-stable extremal rational elliptic surfaces via base change. This is related to work of J. Top and N. Yui which exhibited the same procedure for the semi-stable extremal rational elliptic surfaces.
We study K3 surfaces over a number field $k$ which are double covers of extremal rational elliptic surfaces. We provide a list of all elliptic fibrations on certain K3 surfaces together with the degree of a field extension over which each genus one fibration is defined and admits a section. We show that the latter depends, in general, on the action of the cover involution on the fibers of the genus 1 fibration.
We consider a rational surface with a relatively minimal fibration. Picard number of a such fibred surface is bounded in terms of the genus of a general fibre. When Picard number is the maximum for any given genus, we characterize a such fibred surface whose Mordell-Weil group is trivial by singular fibres. Furthermore, we describe the defining equation explicitly.
This article treats smooth weak Fano 3-folds having an extremal ray of type D. Smooth weak Fano 3-folds with an extremal ray of type D except of degree 6 are classified into 47 deformation types.
We consider the K3 surfaces that arise as double covers of the elliptic modular surface of level 5, $R_{5,5}$. Such surfaces have a natural elliptic fibration induced by the fibration on $R_{5,5}$. Moreover, they admit several other elliptic fibrations. We describe such fibrations in terms of linear systems of curves on $R_{5,5}$. This has a major advantage over other methods of classification of elliptic fibrations, namely, a simple algorithm that has as input equations of linear systems of curves in the projective plane yields a Weierstrass equation for each elliptic fibration. We deal in de…
We construct examples of elliptic fibrations of orbifold general type (in the sense of Campana) which have no etale covers dominating a variety of general type.
We consider K3 surfaces which are double cover of rational elliptic surfaces. The former are endowed with a natural elliptic fibration, which is induced by the latter. There are also other elliptic fibrations on such K3 surfaces, which are necessarily induced by special linear systems on the rational elliptic surfaces. We describe these linear systems. In particular, we observe that every conic bundle on the rational surface induces a genus 1 fibration on the K3 surface and we classify the singular fibers of the genus 1 fibration on the K3 surface it terms of singular fibers and special curves…
In this paper we classify all configurations of singular fibers of elliptic fibrations on the double cover of P^2 ramified along six lines in general position.
In this paper we complete the classification of the elliptic fibrations on K3 surfaces which admit a non-symplectic involution acting trivially on the Néron--Severi group. We use the geometric method introduced by Oguiso and moreover we provide a geometric construction of the fibrations classified. If the non-symplectic involution fixes at least one curve of genus 1, we relate all the elliptic fibrations on the K3 surface with either elliptic fibrations or generalized conic bundles on rational elliptic surfaces. This description allows us to write the Weierstrass equations of the elliptic fibr…
We consider t-structures that naturally arise on elliptic fibrations. By filtering the category of coherent sheaves on an elliptic fibration using the torsion pairs corresponding to these t-structures, we prove results describing equivalences of t-structures under Fourier-Mukai transforms.
We pose the problem to determine explicit defining equations of various elliptic fibrations on a given $K3$ surface, and study the case of the Kummer surfaces of the product of two elliptic curves.
A fibration is said to be isotrivial if all of its smooth fibres are isomorphic to a single fixed variety. We classify the elliptic K3 surfaces that are isotrivial, and use them to construct Lagrangian fibrations that are isotrivial. We then modify the construction to produce new examples of holomorphic symplectic orbifolds, that also admit isotrivial Lagrangian fibrations.
In this paper we classify the elliptic fibrations on K3 surfaces which are the double cover of a blow up of $\mathbb{P}^2$ branched along rational curves and we give equations for many of these elliptic fibrations. Thus we obtain a classification of the van Geemen--Sarti involutions (which are symplectic involutions induced by a translation by a 2-torsion section on an elliptic fibration) on such a surface. Each van Geemen--Sarti involution induces a 2-isogeny between two K3 surfaces, which is described in this paper.
We describe all the elliptic models with section on the Shioda supersingular K3 surface X of Artin invariant 1 over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 3. In particular, we compute elliptic parameters and Weierstrass equations for the fifty two different fibrations, and analyze the reducible fibers and Mordell-Weil lattices.
In this work we describe a construction of semistable fibrations over an elliptic curve with one unique singular fibre and we give effective examples using monodromy of curves.
We study the Gromov-Witten and Donaldson-Thomas correspondence conjectured in [MNOP1, MNOP2], for trivial elliptic fibrations. In particular, we verify the Gromov-Witten and Donaldson-Thomas correspondence for primary fields when the threefold is $E \times S$ where $E$ is a smooth elliptic curve and $S$ is a smooth surface with numerically trivial canonical class.
In this paper, we study the structure, deformations and the moduli spaces of complex projective surfaces admitting genus two fibrations over elliptic curves. We observe that, a surface admitting a smooth fibration as above is elliptic and we employ results on the moduli of polarized elliptic surfaces, to construct moduli spaces of these smooth fibrations. In the case of nonsmooth fibrations, we relate the moduli spaces to the Hurwitz schemes ${\cal H}(1,X(d),n)$ of morphisms of degree $n$ from elliptic curves to the modular curve $X(d)$, $d\geq 3$. Ultimately, we show that the moduli spaces in…
This is mainly a review of my results related to the title. We discuss, how many elliptic fibrations and elliptic fibrations with infinite automorphism group (or the Mordell-Weil group) an algebraic K3 surface over an algebraically closed field can have. This was the subject of my talk at Oberwolfach Workshop "Higher dimensional elliptic fibrations" in October 2010.
We define a monodromy homomorphism for irreducible families of regular elliptic fibrations which takes values in the mapping class group of a punctured sphere. We compute the monodromy for elliptic fibrations only which contain no singular fibres of types other than I_1 and I*_0. There are maximal groups, which can be the monodromy groups of algebraic, resp. differentiable families of elliptic surfaces, and we give an algebraic criterion for the equality of both groups which we can check to apply in case the number of I_1 fibres is at most 6.
We study the maximal Salem degree of automorphisms of K3 surfaces via elliptic fibrations. By generalizing \cite{EOY14}, we establish a characterization of such maximum in terms of elliptic fibrations with infinite automorphism groups. As an application, we show that any supersingular K3 surface in odd characteristic has an automorphism the entropy of which is the natural logarithm of a Salem number of degree $22$.
We classify complex K3 surfaces of zero entropy admitting an elliptic fibration with only irreducible fibers. These surfaces are characterized by the fact that they admit a unique elliptic fibration with infinite automorphism group. We furnish an explicit list of 32 Néron-Severi lattices corresponding to such surfaces. Incidentally, we are able to decide which of these 32 classes of surfaces admit a unique genus 1 fibration. Finally, we prove that all K3 surfaces with Picard rank >=19 and infinite automorphism group have positive entropy.
We consider a relative Fourier-Mukai transform defined on elliptic fibrations over an arbitrary normal base scheme. This is used to construct relative Atiyah sheaves and generalize Atiyah's and Tu's results about semistable sheaves over elliptic curves to the case of elliptic fibrations. Moreover we show that this transform preserves relative (semi)stability of sheaves of positive relative degree.
We describe all the elliptic fibrations with section on the Kummer surface X of the Jacobian of a very general curve C of genus 2 over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0, modulo the automorphism group of X and the symmetric group on the Weierstrass points of C. In particular, we compute elliptic parameters and Weierstrass equations for the 25 different fibrations and analyze the reducible fibers and Mordell-Weil lattices. This answers completely a question posed by Kuwata and Shioda in 2008.
Given a non-singular variety with a K3 fibration f : X --> S we construct dual fibrations Y --> S by replacing each fibre X_s of f by a two-dimensional moduli space of stable sheaves on X_s. In certain cases we prove that the resulting scheme Y is a non-singular variety and construct an equivalence of derived categories of coherent sheaves Φ: D(Y) --> D(X). Our methods also apply to elliptic and abelian surface fibrations. As an application we show how the equivalences Φidentify certain moduli spaces of stable bundles on elliptic threefolds with Hilbert schemes of curves.
The theorem referred to in the title is a technical result that is needed for the classification of elliptic and K3 fibrations birational to Fano 3-fold hypersurfaces in weighted projective space. We present a complete proof of the Curve Exclusion Theorem, which first appeared in the author's unpublished PhD thesis [Ry02] and has since been relied upon in solutions to many cases of the fibration classification problem. We give examples of these solutions and discuss them briefly.
We investigate Calabi--Yau three folds which are small resolutions of fiber products of elliptic surfaces with section admitting reduced fibers. We start by the classification of all fibers that can appear on such varieties. Then, we find formulas to compute the Hodge numbers of obtained three folds in terms of the types of singular fibers of the elliptic surfaces. Next we study Kummer fibrations associated to these fiber products.
A complete classification is presented of elliptic and K3 fibrations birational to certain mildly singular complex Fano 3-folds. Detailed proofs are given for one example case, namely that of a general hypersurface X of degree 30 in weighted P^4 with weights 1,4,5,6,15; but our methods apply more generally. For constructing birational maps from X to elliptic and K3 fibrations we use Kawamata blowups and Mori theory to compute anticanonical rings; to exclude other possible fibrations we make a close examination of the strictly canonical singularities of (X,(1/n)H), where H is the linear system …
We prove that if $X$ and $S$ are smooth varieties and $f\colon X\to S$ is an elliptic fibration with singular fibers curves of types I$_N$ with $N\geq 1$, II, III and IV, then the relative Jacobian $\hat{f}\colon \bar{M}_{X/S}\to S$ of $f$, defined as the relative moduli space of semistable pure dimension one sheaves of rank 1 and degree 0 on the fibers of $f$, is an elliptic fibration such that all its fibers are irreducible. This extends known results when fibers are integral or of type I$_2$.
We systematically develop Bridgeland's and Bridgeland-Maciocia's techniques for studying elliptic fibrations, and identify criteria that ensure 2-term complexes are mapped to torsion-free sheaves under a Fourier-Mukai transform. As an application, we construct an open immersion from a moduli of stable complexes to a moduli of Gieseker stable sheaves on elliptic threefolds. As another application, we give various 1-1 correspondences between fiberwise semistable torsion-free sheaves and codimension-1 sheaves on Weierstrass surfaces.
We study the quasimap invariants of elliptic and K3 fibrations. Oberdieck and Pixton conjectured that the Gromov-Witten potentials of elliptic fibrations are quasi-modular forms. Analogously, we propose similar conjecture for the quasimap potentials of elliptic fibrations. We also conjecture some finite generation properties of quasimap potentials of K3 fibrations. Via wall-crossing conjecture, this will imply some quasi-modularity of the Gromov-Witten potentials of K3 fibrations. We provide some evidences for our conjectures through several examples. The method here can be further generalized…
We consider elliptic fibrations with arbitrary base dimensions, and generalise previous work by the second author. In particular, we check universal closedness for the moduli of semistable objects with respect to a polynomial stability that reduces to PT-stability on threefolds. We also show openness of this polynomial stability. On the other hand, we write down criteria under which certain 2-term polynomial semistable complexes are mapped to torsion-free semistable sheaves under a Fourier-Mukai transform. As an application, we construct an open immersion from a moduli of complexes to a moduli…
Let $V_1$ be the Fano threefold given as a hypersurface of degree 6 in $P(1,1,1,2,3)$ (over a number field $K$). Then there exists a finite extension $K'/K$ such that the set of $K'$-rational points of $X$ is Zariski dense.
We characterize the subscheme of the moduli space of torsion-free sheaves on an elliptic surface which are stable of relative degree zeero (with respect to a polarization of type aH+bf, H being the section and f the elliptic fibre) which is isomorphic, via the relative Fourier-Mukai transform, with the relative compactified Simpson Jacobian of the family of those curves D in the surface which are flat over the base of the elliptic fibration. This generalizes and completes earlier constructions due to Friedman, Morgan and Witten. We also study the relative moduli scheme of sheaves whose restric…
We discuss the birational geometry and the Kodaira dimension of certain varieties previously constructed by Schreieder, proving that in any dimension they admit an elliptic fibration and they are not of general type. The $l$-dimensional variety $Y_n^l$, which is the quotient of the product of a certain curve $C_n$ by itself $l$ times by a group $G\simeq\left(\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}\right)^{l-1}$ of automorphisms, was constructed by Schreieder to obtain varieties with prescribed Hodge numbers. If $n=3^c$ Schreieder constructed an explicit smooth birational model of it, and Flapan proved: the Kod…
Consider a fibred compact Kähler manifold X endowed with a relatively ample line bundle, such that each fibre admits a constant scalar curvature Kähler metric and has discrete automorphism group. Assuming the base of the fibration admits a twisted extremal metric where the twisting form is a certain Weil-Petersson type metric, we prove that X admits an extremal metric for polarisations making the fibres small. Thus X admits a constant scalar curvature Kähler metric if and only if the Futaki invariant vanishes. This extends a result of Fine, who proved this result when the base admits no contin…
Nikulin has classified all finite abelian groups acting symplectically on a K3 surface and he has shown that the induced action on the K3 lattice $U^3\oplus E_8(-1)^2$ depends only on the group but not on the K3 surface. For all the groups in the list of Nikulin we compute the invariant sublattice and its orthogonal complement by using some special elliptic K3 surfaces.
We first classify the possible configurations of fibrations which are not semi-stable on extremal elliptic K3 surfaces. Then we give a complete list of extremal elliptic K3 surfaces whose singular fibers are all not of type $I_n$.
We analyze K3 surfaces admitting an elliptic fibration $E$ and a finite group $G$ of symplectic automorphisms preserving this elliptic fibration. We construct the quotient elliptic fibration $E/G$ comparing its properties to the ones of $E$. We show that if $E$ admits an $n$-torsion section, its quotient by the group of automorphisms induced by this section admits again an $n$-torsion section. Considering automorphisms coming from the base of the fibration, we can describe the Mordell--Weil lattice of a fibration described by Kloosterman. We give the isometries between lattices described by th…
Using Gauss-Manin derivatives of normal functions, we arrive at some remarkable results on the non-triviality of the transcendental regulator for $K_m$ of a very general projective algebraic manifold. Our strongest results are for the transcendental regulator for $K_1$ of a very general $K3$ surface. We also construct an explicit family of $K_1$ cycles on $H \oplus E_8 \oplus E_8$-polarized $K3$ surfaces, and show they are indecomposable by a direct evaluation of the real regulator. Critical use is made of natural elliptic fibrations, hypersurface normal forms, and an explicit parametrization …
Even if there are too many elliptic fibrations to investigate and describe on the singular $K3$ surface $Y_{10}$ of discriminant 72 and belonging to the Apéry-Fermi pencil $(Y_k)$, we find on it many interesting properties. For example some of its elliptic fibrations with 3-torsion section induce by 3-isogeny either an elliptic fibration of $Y_2$, the unique $K3$ surface of discriminant 8, or an elliptic fibration of other $K3$ surfaces of discriminant 72.
For a number field $K$, an algebraic variety $X/K$ is said to have the Hilbert Property if $X(K)$ is not thin. We are going to describe some examples of algebraic varieties, for which the Hilbert Property is a new result. The first class of examples is that of smooth cubic hypersurfaces with a $K$-rational point in $\mathbb{P}_n/K$, for $n \geq 3$. These fall in the class of unirational varieties, for which the Hilbert Property was conjectured by Colliot-Thélène and Sansuc. We then provide a sufficient condition for which a surface endowed with multiple elliptic fibrations has the Hilbert Prop…
Nishiyama introduced a lattice theoretic classification of the elliptic fibrations on a $K3$ surface. In a previous paper we used his method to exhibit $52$ elliptic fibrations, up to isomorphisms, of the singular $K3$ surface of discriminant $-12$. We prove here that the list is complete with a $53$th fibration, thanks to a remark of Elkies and Schütt. We characterize the fibration both theoretically and with a Weierstrass model.
We classify elliptic fibrations birational to a nonsingular, minimal cubic surface over a field of characteristic zero. Our proof is adapted to provide computational techniques for the analysis of such fibrations, and we describe an implementation of this analysis in computer algebra.
A degree one del Pezzo surface is the blowup of P^2 at 8 general points. By the classical Cayley-Bacharach Theorem, there is a unique 9th point whose blowup produces a rational elliptic surface with a section. Via this relationship, we construct a stable pair compactification of the moduli space of anti-canonically polarized degree one del Pezzo surfaces.
In this paper, we study the ordinarity of an isotrivial elliptic surface defined over a field of positive characteristic. If an isotrivial elliptic fibration $π:X \to C$ is given, $X$ is ordinary when the common fiber of $π$ is ordinary and a certain finite cover of the base $C$ is ordinary. By this result, we may obtain the ordinary reduction theorem for some kinds of isotrivial elliptic fibrations.
This is the second of two papers on the birational geometry of $\bar{M}_{g,1}$. We construct rational maps from $\bar{M}_{5,1}$ and $\bar{M}_{6,1}$ to lower-dimensional moduli spaces. As a consequence, we identify geometric divisors that generate extremal rays of the effective cones for these spaces.
We study the existence and properties of birationally equivalent models for elliptically fibered varieties. In particular these have either the structure of Mori fiber spaces or, assuming some standard conjectures, minimal models with a Zariski decomposition compatible with the elliptic fibration. We prove relations between the birational invariants of the elliptically fibered variety, the base of the fibration and of its Jacobian.
