In this note we study in detail the geometry of eight rational elliptic surfaces naturally associated to the sixteen reflexive polygons. The elliptic fibrations supported by these surfaces correspond under mirror symmetry to the eight families of smooth del Pezzo surfaces with very ample anticanonical bundle.
It is known that, adding the number of lattice points lying on the boundary of a reflexive polygon and the number of lattice points lying on the boundary of its polar, always yields 12. Generalising appropriately the notion of reflexivity, one shows that this remains true for "$\ell$-reflexive polygons". In particular, there exist (for this reason) infinitely many (lattice inequivalent) lattice polygons with the same property. The first proof of this fact is due to Kasprzyk and Nill. The present paper contains a second proof (which uses tools only from toric geometry) as well as the descriptio…
We introduce reflexive polytopes of index l as a natural generalisation of the notion of a reflexive polytope of index 1. These l-reflexive polytopes also appear as dual pairs. In dimension two we show that they arise from reflexive polygons via a change of the underlying lattice. This allows us to efficiently classify all isomorphism classes of l-reflexive polygons up to index 200. As another application, we show that any reflexive polygon of arbitrary index satisfies the famous "number 12" property. This is a new, infinite class of lattice polygons possessing this property, and extends the p…
We discuss the problem on the connectedness of various webs of lattice polytopes by introducing a geometric point of view from the toric Mori theory. To this end, we provide a combinatorial description of toric Sarkisov links in terms of certain sets of lattice points, which we call primitive generating sets. In two dimensions, the description is further translated into the language of lattice polygons. As an application, we prove in two ways (constructive and non-constructive) that reflexive or terminal polygons form a single connected web via inclusion relations even without taking modulo un…
It is known that every three dimensional Gorenstein toric singularity has a crepant resolution. Although it is not unique, all crepant resolutions are connected by repeating the operation "flop". On the other hand, this singularity also has a non-commutative crepant resolution (= NCCR) which is constructed from a consistent dimer model. Such an NCCR is given as the endomorphism ring of a certain module which we call splitting maximal modifying module. In this paper, we show that all splitting maximal modifying modules are connected by repeating the operation "mutation" of splitting maximal mod…
Blowing up a rational surface singularity in a reflexive module gives a (any) partial resolution dominated by the minimal resolution. The main theorem shows how deformations of the pair (singularity, module) relates to deformations of the corresponding pair of partial resolution and locally free strict transform, and to deformations of the underlying spaces. The results imply some recent conjectures on small resolutions and flops.
The Newton polygon of the implicit equation of a rational plane curve is explicitly determined by the multiplicities of any of its parametrizations. We give an intersection-theoretical proof of this fact based on a refinement of the Kushnirenko-Bernstein theorem. We apply this result to the determination of the Newton polygon of a curve parameterized by generic Laurent polynomials or by generic rational functions, with explicit genericity conditions. We also show that the variety of rational curves with given Newton polygon is unirational and we compute its dimension. As a consequence, we obta…
First we solve the problem of finding minimal degree families on toric surfaces by reducing it to lattice geometry. Then we describe how to find minimal degree families on, more generally, rational complex projective surfaces.
Reflexive polygons have been extensively studied in a variety of contexts in mathematics and physics. We generalize this programme by looking at the 45 different lattice polygons with two interior points up to SL(2,$\mathbb{Z}$) equivalence. Each corresponds to some affine toric 3-fold as a cone over a Sasaki-Einstein 5-fold. We study the quiver gauge theories of D3-branes probing these cones, which coincide with the mesonic moduli space. The minimum of the volume function of the Sasaki-Einstein base manifold plays an important role in computing the R-charges. We analyze these minimized volume…
Based on a recent extension theorem for reflexive differential forms, that is, regular differential forms defined on the smooth locus of a possibly singular variety, we study the geometry and cohomology of sheaves of reflexive differentials. First, we generalise the extension theorem to holomorphic forms on locally algebraic complex spaces. We investigate the (non-)existence of reflexive pluri-differentials on singular rationally connected varieties, using a semistability analysis with respect to movable curve classes. The necessary foundational material concerning this stability notion is dev…
Finite generation of the symbolic Rees ring of a space monomial prime ideal of a 3-dimensional weighted polynomial ring is a very interesting problem. Negative curves play important roles in finite generation of these rings. We are interested in the structure of the negative curve. We shall prove that negative curves are rational in many cases. We also see that the Cox ring of the blow-up of a toric variety at the point (1,1,...,1) coincides with the extended symbolic Rees ring of an ideal of a polynomial ring. For example, Roberts' second counterexample to Cowsik's question (and Hilbert's 14t…
The Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of a rational polytope $P$ is a fundamental invariant counting lattice points in integer dilates of $P$. The quasi-period of this quasi-polynomial divides the denominator of $P$ but is not always equal to it: this situation is called quasi-period collapse. Polytopes experiencing quasi-period collapse appear widely across algebra and geometry, and yet the phenomenon remains largely mysterious. Using techniques from algebraic geometry - specifically the $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein deformation theory of orbifold del Pezzo surfaces - we explain quasi-period collapse for ra…
We give an upper bound for the degree of rational curves in a family that covers a given birational ruled surface in projective space. The upper bound is stated in terms of the degree, sectional genus and arithmetic genus of the surface. We introduce an algorithm for constructing examples where the upper bound is tight. As an application of our methods we improve an inequality on lattice polygons.
The work is a detailed study of rational singularities of multiplicity 3 (RTP-singularities, for short). We give a list of nonisolated hypersurface singularities of which normalisations are the RTP-singularities, and construct their minimal resolution graphs by means of a subdivision of Newton polygons of those -- a method introduced by M. Oka for isolated complete intersection singularities. We show that nonisolated forms of RTP-singularities and their normalisations are both Newton non-degenerate.
In this paper we prove that there exists a Zariski dense open subset U defined over the rationals Q in the space of all one-variable rational functions with arbitrary k poles of prescribed orders, such that for every geometric point f in U(Qbar)$, the L-function of the exponential sum of f at a prime p has Newton polygon approaching the Hodge polygon as p approaches infinity. As an application to algebraic geometry, we prove that the p-adic Newton polygon of the zeta function of a p-cover of the projective line totally ramified at arbitrary k points of prescribed orders has an asymptotic gener…
Let $(Y,A)$ be a smooth rational surface or a possibly singular toric surface with ample divisor $A$. We show that a family of ECH-based, algebro-geometric invariants $c^{\text{alg}}_k(Y,A)$ proposed by Wormleighton obstruct symplectic embeddings into $Y$. Precisely, if $(X,ω_X)$ is a $4$-dimensional star-shaped domain and $ω_Y$ is a symplectic form Poincaré dual to $[A]$ then \[(X,ω_X)\text{ embeds into }(Y,ω_Y)\text{ symplectically } \implies c^{\text{ECH}}_k(X,ω_X) \le c^{\text{alg}}_k(Y,A)\] We give three applications to toric embedding problems: (1) these obstructions are sharp for embedd…
The Milnor fibre of a $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein smoothing of a Wahl singularity is a rational homology ball $B_{p,q}$. For a canonically polarised surface of general type $X$, it is known that there are bounds on the number $p$ for which $B_{p,q}$ admits a symplectic embedding into $X$. In this paper, we give a recipe to construct unbounded sequences of symplectically embedded $B_{p,q}$ into surfaces of general type equipped with non-canonical symplectic forms. Ultimately, these symplectic embeddings come from Mori's theory of flips, but we give an interpretation in terms of almost toric structu…
We formulate a very general conjecture relating the analytical invariants of a normal surface singularity to the Seiberg-Witten invariants of its link provided that the link is a rational homology sphere. As supporting evidence, we establish its validity for a large class of singularities: some rational and minimally elliptic (including the cyclic quotient and `polygonal') singularities, and Brieskorn-Hamm complete intersections. Some of the verifications are based on a result which describes (in terms of the plumbing graph) the Reidemeister-Turaev sign refined torsion (or, equivalently, the S…
