We study the Seshadri constants on geometrically ruled surfaces. The unstable case is completely solved. Moreover, we give some bounds for the stable case. We apply these results to compute the Seshadri constant of the rational and elliptic ruled surfaces. Both cases are completely determined. The elliptic case provides an interesting picture of how particular is the behavior of the Seshadri constants.
Let $X$ be a surface and let $L$ be an ample line bundle on $X$. We first obtain a lower bound for the Seshadri constant $\varepsilon(X,L,r)$, when $r \ge 3$. We then assume that $X$ is a ruled surface and study Seshadri constants on $X$ in greater detail. We also make precise computations of Seshadri constants on $X$ in some cases.
We study a Seshadri constant at a general point on a rational surface whose anticanonical linear system contains a pencil. First, we describe a Seshadri constant of an ample line bundle on such a rational surface explicitly by the numerical data of the ample line bundle. Secondly, we classify log del Pezzo surfaces which are special in terms of the Seshadri constants of the anticanonical divisors when the anticanonical degree is between 4 and 9.
Motivated by a similar result of Dumnicki, Küronya, Maclean and Szemberg under a slightly stronger hypothesis, we exhibit irrational single-point Seshadri constants on a rational surface $X$ obtained by blowing up very general points of $\mathbb{P}^2_\mathbb{C}$, assuming only that all prime divisors on $X$ of negative self-intersection are smooth rational curves $C$ with $C^2=-1$. (This assumption is a consequence of the SHGH Conjecture, but it is weaker than assuming the full conjecture.)
We compute in this note the Seshadri constants of the anticanonical bundle at every point of Del Pezzo surfaces. During the proof, we enlight the role of rational curves in our computations. We present then two exemples where the positivity of the anticanonical bundle cannot be detected using rational curves.
Let $X$ be a projective surface and let $L$ be an ample line bundle on $X$. The global Seshadri constant $\varepsilon(L)$ of $L$ is defined as the infimum of Seshadri constants $\varepsilon(L,x)$ as $x\in X$ varies. It is an interesting question to ask if $\varepsilon(L)$ is a rational number for any pair $(X, L)$. We study this question when $X$ is a blow up of $\mathbb{P}^2$ at $r \ge 0$ very general points and $L$ is an ample line bundle on $X$. For each $r$ we define a $\textit{submaximality threshold}$ which governs the rationality or irrationality of $\varepsilon(L)$. We state a conjectu…
In this article, we give a description of the closed cone of curves of the projective bundle $\mathbb{P}(E)$ over a smooth projective variety $X$. Using duality, we then calculate the nef cone of divisors in $\mathbb{P}(E)$ over some special surfaces $X$ and for some special bundles on $X$. As an application, we also calculate the Seshadri constants of semistable ample vector bundles with vanishing discriminant on some special ruled surfaces at special points.
In this paper, we study a relation between Seshadri constants and degrees of defining polynomials. In particular, we compute the Seshadri constants on Fano varieties obtained as complete intersections in rational homogeneous spaces of Picard number one.
In this note we contribute to the study of Seshadri constants on abelian and bielliptic surfaces. We specifically focus on bounds that hold on all such surfaces, depending only on the self-intersection of the ample line bundle under consideration. Our result improves previous bounds and it provides rational numbers as bounds, which are potential Seshadri constants.
We prove new results on single point Seshadri constants for ample line bundles on hyperelliptic surfaces. Given a hyperelliptic surface $X$ and an ample line bundle $L$ on $X$, we show that the least Seshadri constant $\varepsilon(L)$ of $L$ is a rational number when $X$ is not of type 6. We also prove new lower bounds for the Seshadri constant $\varepsilon(L,1)$ of $L$ at a very general point.
One of Demailly's characterizations of Seshadri constants on ample line bundles works with Lelong numbers of certain positive singular hermitian metrics. In this note sections of multiples of the line bundle are used to produce such metrics and then to deduce another formula for Seshadri constants. It is applied to compute Seshadri constants on blown up products of curves, to disprove a conjectured characterization of maximal rationally connected quotients and to introduce a new approach to Nagata's conjecture.
In this note we relate the SHGH Conjecture to the rationality of one-point Seshadri constants on blow ups of the projective plane, and explain how rationality of Seshadri constants can be tested with the help of functions on Newton--Okounkov bodies.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety defined over a field $k$ of characteristic $0$ and let $\mathcal{L}$ be a nef line bundle defined over $k$. We prove that if $x\in X$ is a $k$-rational point then the Seshadri constant $ε(X, \mathcal{L}, x)$ over $\overline{k}$ is the same as that over $k$. We show, by constructing families of examples, that there are varieties whose global Seshadri constant $ε(X)$ is zero. We also prove a result on the existence of a Seshadri curve with a natural (and necessary) hypothesis.
We initiate a combinatorial study of Newton-Okounkov functions on toric varieties with an eye on the rationality of asymptotic invariants of line bundles. In the course of our efforts we identify a combinatorial condition which ensures a controlled behavior of the appropriate Newton-Okounkov function on a toric surface. Our approach yields the rationality of many Seshadri constants that have not been settled before.
We prove two new results for Seshadri constants on surfaces of general type. Let $X$ be a surface of general type. In the first part, inspired by \cite{B-S}, we list the possible values for the multi-point Seshadri constant $\varepsilon(K_X,x_1,x_2,...,x_r)$ when it lies between $0$ and $1/r$, where $K_X$ is the canonical line bundle on $X$. In the second part, we assume $X$ of the form $C \times C$, where $C$ is a general smooth curve of genus $g \geq 2$. Given such $X$ and an ample line bundle $L$ on $X$ with some conditions on it, we show that the global Seshadri constant of $L$ is a ration…
We prove that projectivity is an open condition for deformations of algebraic spaces with rational singularities. V.2: references updated and corrected.
We show that the subgraph of the concave transform of a multiplicative filtration on a section ring is the Newton--Okounkov body of a certain semigroup, and if the filtration is induced by a divisorial valuation, then the associated graded algebra is the algebra of sections of a concrete line bundle in higher dimension. We use this description to give a rationality criterion for certain Seshadri constants. Along the way we introduce Newton--Okounkov bodies of abstract graded semigroups and determine conditions for their slices to be Newton--Okounkov bodies of subsemigroups.
In the present paper we are concerned with the possible values of Seshadri constants. While in general every positive rational number appears as the local Seshadri constant of some ample line bundle, we point out that for adjoint line bundles there are explicit lower bounds depending only on the dimension of the underlying variety. In the surface case, where the optimal lower bound is 1/2, we characterize all possible values in the range between 1/2 and 1 -- there are surprisingly few. As expected, one obtains even more restrictive results for the Seshadri constants of adjoints of very ample l…
Consider a polarized abelian variety $(A,L)$ over the field of complex numbers. Following Demailly, one can associate to $(A,L)$ a real number $ε(A,L)$, its {\em Seshadri constant}, which in effect measures how much of the positivity of $L$ can be concentrated at any given point of $A$. There has been considerable recent interest in finding bounds on the Seshadri constants of abelian varieties and on smooth projective varieties in general. In the present paper we first generalize an approach of Buser and Sarnak to give a lower bound on the minimal period length of $(A,L)$ in terms of the type …
In this paper, we compare the moduli spaces of rank-3 vector bundles stable with respect to different ample divisors over rational ruled surfaces. We also discuss the irreducibility, unirationality, and rationality of these moduli spaces.
We compute the degree of the variety parametrizing rational ruled surfaces of degree d in the projective space by relating the problem to Gromov-Witten invariants and Quantum cohomology.
The ruled surfaces, i.e., surfaces generated by one parametric set of lines, are widely used in the~field of applied geometry. An~isophote on a surface is a curve consisting of surface points whose normals form a constant angle with some fixed vector. Choosing an angle equal to $π/2$ we obtain a special instance of a~isophote -- the so called contour curve. While contours on rational ruled surfaces are rational curves, this is no longer true for the isophotes. Hence we will provide a formula for their genus. Moreover we will show that the only surfaces with a~rational generic contour are just …
We study moduli spaces $M_X(r,c_1,c_2)$ parametrizing slope semistable vector bundles of rank $r$ and fixed Chern classes $c_1, c_2$ on a ruled surface whose base is a rational nodal curve. We show that under certain conditions, these moduli spaces are irreducible, smooth and rational (when non-empty). We also prove that they are non-empty in some cases. We show that for a rational ruled surface defined over real numbers, the moduli space $M_X(r,c_1,c_2)$ is rational as a variety defined over $\mathbb R$.
Chen, Sederberg, and Zheng introduced the notion of a $μ$-basis for a rational ruled surface in Chen et al. (2001) and showed that its resultant is the implicit equation of the surface, if the parametrization is generically injective. We generalize this result to the case of an arbitrary parametrization. We also give a new proof for the corresponding theorem in the curve case and treat the reparametrization problem for curves and ruled surfaces.
In this work we use arithmetic, geometric, and combinatorial techniques to compute the cohomology of Weil divisors of a special class of normal surfaces, the so-called rational ruled toric surfaces. These computations are used to study the topology of cyclic coverings of such surfaces ramified along Q-normal crossing divisors.
We prove that the morphism that maps a rational ruled surface to its singular locus is genericaly injective modulo isomophism and duality. We also calculate the dimension and the degre of its image.
In this paper, we associate an invariant $α_{x}(L)$ to an algebraic point $x$ on an algebraic variety $X$ with an ample line bundle $L$. The invariant $α$ measures how well $x$ can be approximated by rational points on $X$, with respect to the height function associated to $L$. We show that this invariant is closely related to the Seshadri constant $ε_{x}(L)$ measuring local positivity of $L$ at $x$, and in particular that Roth's theorem on $\mathbf{P}^1$ generalizes as an inequality between these two invariants valid for arbitrary projective varieties.
We present a method for computing all the symmetries of a rational ruled surface defined by a rational parametrization which works directly in parametric rational form, i.e. without computing or making use of the implicit equation of the surface. The method proceeds by translating the problem into the parameter space, and relies on polynomial system solving. If we want all the symmetries of the surface, including rotational symmetries, we need to deal with polynomial systems in four variables; if we are only interested in involutions (e.g. central symmetries, axial symmetries, reflections in a…
We consider the Quot scheme, R_{d}, compactifying the space of degree d maps from the projective line to the Grassmannian of lines. We give an algorithm for computing the degree of R_{d} under a "generalized Plücker embedding", this is a certain Gromov-Witten invariant. The approach is to apply the Atiyah-Bott localization formula for the natural C^{*}-action on R_{d}. These numbers can be obtained directly from Vafa-Intriligator formula.
We study ruled orders. These arise naturally in the Mori program for orders on projective surfaces and morally speaking are orders on a ruled surface ramified on a bisection and possibly some fibres. We describe fibres of a ruled order and show they are in some sense rational. We also determine the Hilbert scheme of rational curves and hence the corresponding non-commutative Mori contraction. This gives strong evidence that ruled orders are examples of the non-commutative ruled surfaces introduced by Van den Bergh.
We present an algorithm that covers any given rational ruled surface with two rational parametrizations. In addition, we present an algorithm that transforms any rational surface parametrization into a new rational surface parametrization without affine base points and such that the degree of the corresponding maps is preserved.
Very ampleness criteria for rank 2 vector bundles over smooth, ruled surfaces over rational and elliptic curves are given. The criteria are then used to settle open existence questions for some special threefolds of low degree.
We classify the singularities of a surface ruled by conics: they are rational double points of type $A_n$ or $D_n$. This is proved by showing that they arise from a precise series of blow-ups of a suitable surface geometrically ruled by conics. We determine also the family of such surfaces which are birational models of a given surface ruled by conics and obtained in a "minimal way" from it.
We provide algorithms to reconstruct rational ruled surfaces in three-dimensional projective space from the `apparent contour' of a single projection to the projective plane. We deal with the case of tangent developables and of general projections to $\mathbb{p}^3$ of rational normal scrolls. In the first case, we use the fact that every such surface is the projection of the tangent developable of a rational normal curve, while in the second we start by reconstructing the rational normal scroll. In both instances we then reconstruct the correct projection to $\mathbb{p}^3$ of these surfaces by…
In this paper, we prove a general result computing the number of rational points of bounded height on a projective variety $V$ which is covered by lines. The main technical result used to achieve this is an upper bound on the number of rational points of bounded height on a line. This upper bound is such that it can be easily controlled as the line varies, and hence is used to sum the counting functions of the lines which cover the original variety $V$.
Let $Σ$ be a smooth projective surface, let $f' : S' \to Σ$ be a double cover of $Σ$ and let $μ: S \to S'$ be the canonical resolution. Put $f = f'\circμ$. An irreducible curve $C$ on $Σ$ is said to be a splitting curve with respect to $f$ if $f^*C$ is of the form $C^+ + C^- + E$, where $C^- = σ_f^*C^+$, $σ_f$ being the covering transformation of $f$ and all irreducible components of $E$ are contained in the exceptional set of $μ$. In this article, we show that a kind of "reciprocity" of splitting curves holds for a certain pair of curves on rational ruled surfaces. As an application, we consi…
The ruled surface is a typical modeling surface in computer aided geometric design. It is usually given in the standard parametric form. However, it can also be in the forms than the standard one. For these forms, it is necessary to determine and find the standard form. In this paper, we present algorithms to determine whether a given implicit surface is a rational ruled surface. A parametrization of the surface is computed for the affirmative case. We also consider the parametric situation. More precisely, after a given rational parametric surface is determined as a ruled one, we reparameteri…
Let X be a smooth complex projective surface. We prove that for any sufficiently big m there exists a rational dominant map f from X into a complex rational ruled surface Y, such that f is generically finite of degree m and has monodromy the alternating group Am.
We give the first evidence for a conjecture that a general, index-one, Fano hypersurface is not unirational: (i) a general point of the hypersurface is contained in no rational surface ruled, roughly, by low-degree rational curves, and (ii) a general point is contained in no image of a Del Pezzo surface.
It is proved that a smooth rational surface in projective four-space, which is ruled by cubics or quartics has degree at most 12. It is also proved that a smooth rational surface in projective four-space which is the image of Fn by a linear system with "simple base points" (see text) has degree at most 12.
In this paper we study the geometry of the Severi varieties parametrizing curves on the rational ruled surface $\fn$. We compute the number of such curves through the appropriate number of fixed general points on $\fn$, and the number of such curves which are irreducible. These numbers are known as Severi degrees; they are the degrees of unions of components of the Hilbert scheme. As (i) $\fn$ can be deformed to $\eff_{n+2}$, (ii) the Gromov-Witten invariants are deformation-invariant, and (iii) the Gromov-Witten invariants of $\eff_0$ and $\eff_1$ are enumerative, Theorem \ref{irecursion} com…
Fix a ruled surface S obtained as the projective completion of a line bundle L on a complex elliptic curve; we study the moduli problem of parametrizing certain pairs consisting of a sheaf E on S and a map of E to a fixed reference sheaf on S. We prove that the full moduli stack for this problem is representable by a scheme in some cases. Moreover, the moduli stack admits an action by the group ${\mathbf C}^*$, and we determine its fixed-point set, which leads in some special cases to explicit formulas for the rational homology of the moduli space.
We study the geometry of the Kontsevich compactification of stable maps to the Grassmannian of lines in the projective space. We consider a stratification of this space. As an application we compute the degree of the variety parametrizing rational ruled surfaces with a minimal directix of degree d/2-1 by intersecting divisors in the moduli space of stable maps. For example, there are 128054031872040 rational ruled sextics passing through 25 points in $\mathbb{P}^{3}$ with a minimal directrix of degree 2.
We give an upper bound for the degree of rational curves in a family that covers a given birational ruled surface in projective space. The upper bound is stated in terms of the degree, sectional genus and arithmetic genus of the surface. We introduce an algorithm for constructing examples where the upper bound is tight. As an application of our methods we improve an inequality on lattice polygons.
In this paper we shall generalize the chamber structure of polarizations defined by Qin, and as an application we shall compute the Picard groups of moduli spaces of stable sheaves on a non-rational ruled surface.
The main goal of this paper is to give a general method to compute (via computer algebra systems) an explicit set of generators of the ideals of the projective embeddings of some ruled surfaces, namely projective line bundles over curves such that the fibres are embedded as smooth rational curves. Indeed, although the existence of the embeddings that we consider is well known, often in literature there are no explicit descriptions of the corresponding projective ideals. Such an explicit description allows to compute, besides all the syzygies, some of the important algebraic invariants of the s…
We prove that (not necessarily rigid) Calabi-Yau threefolds defined over the rationals which contain sufficiently many elliptic ruled surfcaes are modular (under mild restrictions on the primes of bad reduction). Our proof uses the results of Dieulefait and Manoharmayum who proved modularity of rigid Calabi-Yau threefolds.
We determine the fixed locus of the anticanonical complete linear system of a given anticanonical rational surface. The case of a geometrically ruled rational surface is fully studied, e.g., the monoid of numerically effective divisor classes of such surface is explicitly determined and is minimally generated by two elements. On the other hand, as a consequence in the particular case where $X$ is a smooth rational surface with $K_{X}^{2}>0$, the following expected result holds: every fixed prime divisor of the complete linear system $|-K_X|$ is a $(-n)$-curve, for some integer $n\geq 1$.
