The $K$-groups of the crossed product of the rotation C*-algebra $A_θ$ by free and amalgamated products of the cyclic groups $\mathbb Z_n$, for $n=2,3,4,6$, are calculated. The actions here arise from the canonical actions of these groups on the rotation algebra under the flip, cubic, Fourier, and hexic automorphisms, respectively. An interesting feature in this study is that although the inclusion $A_θ\to A_θ\rtimes \mathbb Z_n$ induces injective maps on their $K_0$-groups, the same is not the case for the inclusions $A_θ\rtimes \mathbb Z_d \to A_θ\rtimes \mathbb Z_n$ for $2\le d < n \le 6$ and $d|n$, which we endeavor to calculate. Further, while for free products $K_1(A_θ\rtimes [\mathbb Z_{m} \ast \mathbb Z_{n}]) = 0$, for amalgamated products $K_1(A_θ\rtimes [\mathbb Z_{m} \ast_{\mathbb Z_{d}} \mathbb Z_{n}]) = \mathbb Z^k$ is non-vanishing ($k=1,2$).
The basic notions and results of equivariant KK-theory concerning crossed products can be extended to the case of locally compact quantum groups. We recall these constructions and prove some usefull properties of subgroups and amalgamated free products of discrete quantum groups. Using these properties and a quantum analogue of the Bass-Serre tree, we establish the K-amenability of amalgamated free products of amenable discrete quantum groups.
For any reduced amalgamated free product $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra $(A,E)=(A_1, E_1) \ast_D (A_2,E_2)$, we introduce and study a canonical ambient $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra $Δ\mathbf{T}(A,E)$ of $A$ which generalizes the crossed product arising from the canonical action of an amalgamated free product group on the compactification of the associated Bass--Serre tree. Using an explicit identification of $Δ\mathbf{T}(A,E)$ with a Cuntz--Pimsner algebra we prove two kinds of "amenability" results for $Δ\mathbf{T}(A,E)$; nuclearity and universality. As applications of our framework, we provide new concept…
Recently, Adrian Ioana proved that all crossed products by free ergodic probability measure preserving actions of a nontrivial free product group Γ_1 * Γ_2 have a unique Cartan subalgebra up to unitary conjugacy. Ioana deduced this result from a more general dichotomy theorem on the normalizer N_M(A)'' of an amenable subalgebra A of an amalgamated free product von Neumann algebra M = M_1 *_B M_2. We improve this dichotomy theorem by removing the spectral gap assumptions and obtain in particular a simpler proof for the uniqueness of the Cartan subalgebra in crossed products by Γ_1 * Γ_2.
We give a construction of a nuclear $C^\ast$-algebra associated with an amalgamated free product of groups, generalizing Spielberg's construction of a certain Cuntz-Krieger algebra associated with a finitely generated free product of cyclic groups. Our nuclear $C^\ast$-algebras can be identified with certain Cuntz-Krieger-Pimsner algebras. We will also show that our algebras can be obtained by the crossed product construction of the canonical actions on the hyperbolic boundaries, which proves a special case of Adams' result about amenability of the boundary action for hyperbolic groups. We wil…
We interpret several constructions with C*-algebras as colimits in the bicategory of correspondences. This includes crossed products for actions of groups and crossed modules, Cuntz-Pimsner algebras of proper product systems, direct sums and inductive limits, and certain amalgamated free products.
We define the tracial Rokhlin property for actions of finite cyclic groups on stably finite simple unital C*-algebras. We prove that when the algebra is in addition simple and has tracial rank zero, then the crossed product again has tracial rank zero. Under a kind of weak approximate innerness assumption and one other technical condition, we prove that if the action has the the tracial Rokhlin property and the crossed product has tracial rank zero, then the original algebra has tracial rank zero. We give examples showing how the tracial Rokhlin property differs from the Rokhlin property of Iz…
We consider crossed product von Neumann algebras arising from free Bogoljubov actions of the integers. We describe several presentations of them as amalgamated free products and cocycle crossed products and give a criterion for factoriality. A number of isomorphism results for free Bogoljubov crossed products are proved, focusing on those arising from almost periodic representations. We complement our isomorphism results by rigidity results yielding non-isomorphic free Bogoljubov crossed products and by a partial characterisation of strong solidity of a free Bogoljubov crossed products in term…
We discuss the cyclic homology of crossed product algebras from the Cuntz-Quillen point of view. The periodic cyclic homology of a crossed product algebra $A\rtimes G$ is described in terms of the $G$-action on periodic cyclic bicomplexes of crossed products of $A$ by the cyclic subgroups of $G$ .
We show that all amenable, minimal actions of a large class of nonamenable countable groups on compact metric spaces have dynamical comparison. This class includes all nonamenable hyperbolic groups, many HNN-extensions, nonamenable Baumslag-Solitar groups, a large class of amalgamated free products, lattices in many Lie groups, $\widetilde{A}_2$-groups, as well as direct products of the above with arbitrary countable groups. As a consequence, crossed products by amenable, minimal and topologically free actions of such groups on compact metric spaces are Kirchberg algebras in the UCT class, and…
Let $θ, θ'$ be irrational numbers and $A, B$ be matrices in $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ of infinite order. We compute the $K$-theory of the crossed product $\mathcal{A}_θ\rtimes_A \mathbb{Z}$ and show that $\mathcal{A}_θ \rtimes_A\mathbb{Z}$ and $\mathcal{A}_{θ'} \rtimes_B \mathbb{Z}$ are $*$-isomorphic if and only if $θ= \pmθ' \pmod{\mathbb{Z}}$ and $I-A^{-1}$ is matrix equivalent to $I-B^{-1}$. Combining this result and an explicit construction of equivariant bimodules, we show that $\mathcal{A}_θ \rtimes_A\mathbb{Z}$ and $\mathcal{A}_{θ'} \rtimes_B \mathbb{Z}$ are Morita equivalent if and only if $θ…
For minimal unique ergodic diffeomorphisms $α_n$ of $S^{2n+1} (n>0)$ and $α_m$ of $S^{2m+1}(m>0)$, the $C^*$-crossed product algebra $C(S^{2n+1})\rtimes_{α_n} \mathbb{Z}$ is isomorphic to $C(S^{2m+1})\rtimes_{α_m} \mathbb{Z}$ even though $n\neq m$ . However, by cyclic cohomology, we show that smooth crossed product algebra $C^\infty(S^{2n+1})\rtimes_{α_n} \mathbb{Z}$ is not isomorphic to $C^\infty(S^{2m+1})\rtimes_{α_m} \mathbb{Z}$ if $n\neq m$.
We describe the structure of the irreducible representations of crossed products of unital C*-algebras by actions of finite groups in terms of irreducible representations of the C*-algebras on which the groups act. We then apply this description to derive a characterization of irreducible representations of crossed-products by finite cyclic groups in terms of representations of the C*-algebra and its fixed point subalgebra. These results are applied to crossed-products by the permutation group on three elements and illustrated by various examples.
We describe the representation theory of C*-crossed-products of a unital C*-algebra A by the cyclic group of order 2. We prove that there are two main types of irreducible representations for the crossed-product: those whose restriction to A is irreducible and those who are the sum of two unitarily unequivalent representations of A. We characterize each class in term of the restriction of the representations to the fixed point C*-subalgebra of A. We apply our results to compute the K-theory of several crossed-products of the free group on two generators.
We construct a periodic cyclic cocycle on the symbol algebra of Boutet de Monvel operators and use it to interpret the index formula for elliptic pseudodifferential boundary value problems due to Fedosov as the Chern--Connes pairing of the classes in $K$-theory of elliptic symbols with this cyclic cocycle. We also consider the equivariant case. Namely, we construct a periodic cyclic cocycle on the crossed product of the algebra of symbols with a group acting on this algebra by automorphisms. Such crossed products arize in index theory of nonlocal boundary value problems with shift operators.
We show that the UCT problem for separable, nuclear $\mathrm C^*$-algebras relies only on whether the UCT holds for crossed products of certain finite cyclic group actions on the Razak-Jacelon algebra. This observation is analogous to and in fact recovers a characterization of the UCT problem in terms of finite group actions on the Cuntz algebra $\mathcal O_2$ established in previous work by the authors. Although based on a similar approach, the new conceptual ingredients in the finite context are the recent advances in the classification of stably projectionless $\mathrm C^*$-algebras, as wel…
We give examples of actions of Z/2Z on AF algebras and AT algebras which demonstrate the differences between the (strict) Rokhlin property and the tracial Rokhlin property, and between (strict) approximate representability and tracial approximate representability. Specific results include the following. We determine exactly when a product type action of Z/2Z on a UHF algebra has the tracial Rokhlin property; in particular, unlike for the strict Rokhlin property, every UHF algebra admits such an action. We prove that Blackadar's action of Z/2Z on the 2^{\infty} UHF algebra, whose crossed produc…
In \verb|arXiv:1212.5901| we associated an algebra $\Gami(\fA)$ to every bornological algebra $\fA$ and an ideal $I_{S(\fA)}\triqui\Gami(\fA)$ to every symmetric ideal $S\triqui\elli$. We showed that $I_{S(\fA)}$ has $K$-theoretical properties which are similar to those of the usual stabilization with respect to the ideal $J_S\triqui\cB$ of the algebra $\cB$ of bounded operators in Hilbert space which corresponds to $S$ under Calkin's correspondence. In the current article we compute the relative cyclic homology $HC_*(\Gami(\fA):I_{S(\fA)})$. Using these calculations, and the results of \emph{…
We prove a "unique crossed product decomposition" result for group measure space II_1 factors arising from arbitrary free ergodic probability measure preserving (p.m.p.) actions of groups Γin a fairly large family G, which contains all free products of a Kazhdan group and a non-trivial group, as well as certain amalgamated free products over an amenable subgroup. We deduce that if T_n denotes the group of upper triangular matrices in PSL(n,Z), then any free, mixing p.m.p. action of the amalgamated free product of PSL(n,Z) with itself over T_n, is W*-superrigid, i.e. any isomorphism between L^\…
In this paper we present the construction of explicit quasi-isomorphisms that compute the cyclic homology and periodic cyclic homology of crossed-product algebras associated with (discrete) group actions. In the first part we deal with algebraic crossed-products associated with group actions on unital algebras over any ring $k\supset \mathbb{Q}$. In the second part, we extend the results to actions on locally convex algebras. We then deal with crossed-products associated with group actions on manifolds and smooth varieties. For the finite order components, the results are expressed in terms of…
We define smooth generalized crossed products and prove six-term exact sequences of Pimsner-Voiculescu type. This sequence may, in particular, be applied to smooth subalgebras of the Quantum Heisenberg Manifolds in order to compute the generators of their cyclic cohomology. Our proof is based on a combination of arguments from the setting of (Cuntz-)Pimsner algebras and the Toeplitz proof of Bott-periodicity.
We prove that for any free ergodic nonsingular nonamenable action Γ \actson (X,μ) of all Γ in a large class of groups including all hyperbolic groups, the associated group measure space factor $L^\infty(X) \rtimes Γ$ has L^\infty(X) as its unique Cartan subalgebra, up to unitary conjugacy. This generalizes the probability measure preserving case that was established in [PV12]. We also prove primeness and indecomposability results for such crossed products, for the corresponding orbit equivalence relations and for arbitrary amalgamated free products $M_1 *_B M_2$ over a subalgebra B of type I.
Assume A is a Frechet algebra equipped with a smooth isometric action of a vector group V, and consider Rieffel's deformation A_J of A. We construct an explicit isomorphism between the smooth crossed products V\ltimes\A_J and V\ltimes\A. When combined with the Elliott-Natsume-Nest isomorphism, this immediately implies that the periodic cyclic cohomology is invariant under deformation. Specializing to the case of smooth subalgebras of C*-algebras, we also get a simple proof of equivalence of Rieffel's and Kasprzak's approaches to deformation.
In this paper we study free actions of groups on separated graphs and their \cstar{}algebras, generalizing previous results involving ordinary (directed) graphs. We prove a version of the Gross-Tucker Theorem for separated graphs yielding a characterization of free actions on separated graphs via a skew product of the (orbit) separated graph by a group labeling function. Moreover, we describe the C*-algebras associated to these skew products as crossed products by certain coactions coming from the labeling function on the graph. Our results deal with both the full and the reduced C*-algebras o…
We construct a sequence of $n-1$ cyclic exact sequences that can be used to compute the $K$-theory of the $C^\star$-algebra crossed product $A \ltimes {\mathbb Z}_n$.
For an action of a finite cyclic group $F$ on an $n$-dimensional noncommutative torus $A_θ,$ we give sufficient conditions when the fundamental projective modules over $A_θ$, which determine the range of the canonical trace on $A_θ,$ extend to projective modules over the crossed product C*-algebra $A_θ\rtimes F.$ Our results allow us to understand the range of the canonical trace on $A_θ\rtimes F$, and determine it completely for several examples including the crossed products of 2-dimensional noncommutative tori with finite cyclic groups and the flip action of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ on any $n$-dimens…
Jolissaint and Stalder introduced definitions of mixing and weak mixing for von Neumann subalgebras of finite von Neumann algebras. In this note, we study various algebraic and analytical properties of subalgebras with these mixing properties. We prove some basic results about mixing inclusions of von Neumann algebras and establish a connection between mixing properties and normalizers of von Neumann subalgebras. The special case of mixing subalgebras arising from inclusions of countable discrete groups finds applications to ergodic theory, in particular, a new generalization of a classical th…
We prove the uniqueness of the group measure space Cartan subalgebra in crossed products A \rtimes Γcovering certain cases where Γis an amalgamated free product over a non-amenable subgroup. In combination with Kida's work we deduce that if Σ< SL(3,\Z) denotes the subgroup of matrices g with g_31 = g_32 = 0, then any free ergodic probability measure preserving action of Γ= SL(3,\Z) *_ΣSL(3,\Z) is stably W*-superrigid. In the second part we settle a technical issue about the unitary conjugacy of group measure space Cartan subalgebras.
In this article we describe extensions of some K-theory classes of Heisenberg modules over higher-dimensional noncommutative tori to projective modules over crossed products of noncommutative tori by finite cyclic groups, aka noncommutative orbifolds. The two dimensional case was treated by Echterhoff, Lück, Phillips and Walters. Our approach is based on the theory of metaplectic transformations of the representation theory of the Heisenberg group. We also describe the generators of the K-groups of the crossed products of flip actions by $\mathbb{Z}_2$ on 3-dimensional noncommutative tori.
We develop elliptic theory of operators associated with a diffeomorphism of a closed smooth manifold. The aim of the present paper is to obtain an index formula for such operators in terms of topological invariants of the manifold and of the symbol of the operator. The symbol in this situation is an element of a certain crossed product. We express the index as the pairing of the class in K-theory defined by the symbol and the Todd class in periodic cyclic cohomology of the crossed product.
We study the quotients of the Toeplitz C*-algebra of a quasi-lattice ordered group (G,P), which we view as crossed products by a partial actions of G on closed invariant subsets of a totally disconnected compact Hausdorff space, the Nica spectrum of (G,P). Our original motivation and our main examples are drawn from right-angled Artin groups, but many of our results are valid for more general quasi-lattice ordered groups. We show that the Nica spectrum has a unique minimal closed invariant subset, which we call the boundary spectrum, and we define the boundary quotient to be the crossed produc…
We study the K-homology of the rotation algebras $A_θ$ using the six term cyclic sequence for the K-homology of a crossed product by ${\bf Z}$. In the case where $θ$ is irrational we use Pimsner and Voiculescu's work on AF-embeddings of the $A_θ$ to search for the missing generator of the even K-homology.
In this paper we study the Lie groupoids which appear in foliation theory. A foliation groupoid is a Lie groupoid which integrates a foliation, or, equivalently, whose anchor map is injective. The first theorem shows that, for a Lie groupoid G, the following are equivalent: - G is a foliation groupoid, - G has discrete isotropy groups, - G is Morita equivalent to an etale groupoid. Moreover, we show that among the Lie groupoids integrating a given foliation, the holonomy and the monodromy groupoids are extreme examples. The second theorem shows that the cyclic homology of convolution algebras …
We analyze existence of crossed product constructions of Lie group actions on C^*-algebras which are singular. These are actions where the group need not be locally compact, or the action need not be strongly continuous. In particular, we consider the case where spectrum conditions are required for the implementing unitary group in covariant representations of such actions. The existence of a crossed product construction is guaranteed by the existence of "cross representations". For one-parameter automorphism groups, we prove that the existence of cross representations is stable with respect t…
We show that outer approximately represenbtable actions of a finite cyclic group on UCT Kirchberg algebras satisfy a certain quasi-freeness type property if the corresponding crossed products satisfy the UCT and absorb a suitable UHF algebra tensorially. More concretely, we prove that for such an action there exists an inverse semigroup of homogeneous partial isometries that generates the ambient C*-algebra and whose idempotent semilattice generates a Cartan subalgebra. We prove a similar result for actions of finite cyclic groups with the Rokhlin property on UCT Kirchberg algebras absorbing a…
We construct a family of odd, finitely summable Fredholm modules over the crossed product C*-algebra $C(\bd \G)\rtimes \G$ associated to the action of a non-elementary hyperbolic group $\G$ on its Gromov boundary $\bd \G$. These Fredholm modules all represent the same, distinguished class in K-homology, namely that of the `boundary extension' of $C(\bd \G)\rtimes \G$ associated to the Gromov compactification of $\G$, and is typically nonzero. Their summability is closely related to the Hausdorff dimension of the boundary. We use these results to compute the Connes-Chern character of the bounda…
To a large class of graphs of groups we associate a C*-algebra universal for generators and relations. We show that this C*-algebra is stably isomorphic to the crossed product induced from the action of the fundamental group of the graph of groups on the boundary of its Bass-Serre tree. We characterise when this action is minimal, and find a sufficient condition under which it is locally contractive. In the case of generalised Baumslag-Solitar graphs of groups (graphs of groups in which every group is infinite cyclic) we also characterise topological freeness of this action. We are then able t…
An odd index theorem for higher odd Chern characters of crossed product algebras is proved. It generalizes the Noether-Gohberg-Krein index theorem. Furthermore, a local formula for the associated cyclic cocycle is provided. When applied to the non-commutative Brillouin zone, this allows to define topological invariants for condensed matter phases from the chiral unitary (or AIII-symmetry) class in the presence of strong disorder and magnetic fields whenever the Fermi level lies in region of Anderson localization.
We define "tracial" analogs of the Rokhlin property for actions of finite groups, approximate representability of actions of finite abelian groups, and of approximate innerness. We prove four analogs of related "nontracial" results. First, the crossed product of an infinite dimensional simple separable unital C*-algebra with tracial rank zero by an action of a finite group with the tracial Rokhlin property again has tracial rank zero. Second, an outer action of a finite abelian group on an infinite dimensional simple separable unital C*-algebra has the tracial Rokhlin property if and only if i…
We survey some of the known results on the relation between the homology of the {\em full} Hecke algebra of a reductive $p$-adic group $G$, and the representation theory of $G$. Let us denote by $\CIc(G)$ the full Hecke algebra of $G$ and by $\Hp_*(\CIc(G))$ its periodic cyclic homology groups. Let $\hat G$ denote the admissible dual of $G$. One of the main points of this paper is that the groups $\Hp_*(\CIc(G))$ are, on the one hand, directly related to the topology of $\hat G$ and, on the other hand, the groups $\Hp_*(\CIc(G))$ are explicitly computable in terms of $G$ (essentially, in terms…
We use constructive bounded Kasparov K-theory to investigate the numerical invariants stemming from the internal Kasparov products $K_i(\mathcal A) \times KK^i(\mathcal A, \mathcal B) \rightarrow K_0(\mathcal B) \rightarrow \mathbb R$, $i=0,1$, where the last morphism is provided by a tracial state. For the class of properly defined finitely-summable Kasparov $(\mathcal A,\mathcal B)$-cycles, the invariants are given by the pairing of K-theory of $\mathcal B$ with an element of the periodic cyclic cohomology of $\mathcal B$, which we call the generalized Connes-Chern character. When $\mathcal …
