We give a construction of a nuclear $C^\ast$-algebra associated with an amalgamated free product of groups, generalizing Spielberg's construction of a certain Cuntz-Krieger algebra associated with a finitely generated free product of cyclic groups. Our nuclear $C^\ast$-algebras can be identified with certain Cuntz-Krieger-Pimsner algebras. We will also show that our algebras can be obtained by the crossed product construction of the canonical actions on the hyperbolic boundaries, which proves a special case of Adams' result about amenability of the boundary action for hyperbolic groups. We will also give an explicit formula of the $K$-groups of our algebras. Finally we will investigate the relationship between the KMS states of the generalized gauge actions on our $C^\ast$ algebras and random walks on the groups.
Given a finitely aligned $k$-graph $Λ$, we let $Λ^i$ denote the $(k-1)$-graph formed by removing all edges of degree $e_i$ from $Λ$. We show that the Toeplitz-Cuntz-Krieger algebra of $Λ$, denoted by $\mathcal{T}C^*(Λ)$, may be realised as the Toeplitz algebra of a Hilbert $\mathcal{T}C^*(Λ^i)$-bimodule. When $Λ$ is locally-convex, we show that the Cuntz-Krieger algebra of $Λ$, which we denote by $C^*(Λ)$, may be realised as the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra of a Hilbert $C^*(Λ^i)$-bimodule. Consequently, $\mathcal{T}C^*(Λ)$ and $C^*(Λ)$ may be viewed as iterated Toeplitz and iterated Cuntz-Pimsner al…
Let H be a full Hilbert bimodule over a C*-algebra A. We show that the Cuntz-Pimsner C*-algebra associated to H is exact if and only if A is exact. Using this result, we give alternative proofs for exactness of reduced amalgamated free products of exact C*-algebras. In the case that A is a finite dimensional C*-algebra, we also show that the Brown-Voiculescu topological entropy of Bogljubov automorphisms of the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra associated to an A,A Hilbert bimodule is zero.
We study Sims-Yeend's product system C*-algebras and topological higher-rank graph C*-algebras by Yeend. We give a relation between Katsura's Cuntz-Pimsner covariance and Sims-Yeend's one by a direct approach and an explicit form of the core of product system C*-algebras. Finally, we prove Cuntz-Krieger type uniqueness theorem for topological higher-rank graph C*-algebras under certain aperiodic condition.
We show how the fine structure in shift-tail equivalence, appearing in the noncommutative geometry of Cuntz-Krieger algebras developed by the first two authors, has an analogue in a wide range of other Cuntz-Pimsner algebras. To illustrate this structure, and where it appears, we produce an unbounded representative of the defining extension of the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra constructed from a finitely generated projective bi-Hilbertian module, extending work by the third author with Robertson and Sims. As an application, our construction yields new spectral triples for Cuntz- and Cuntz-Krieger alge…
Necessary and sufficient conditions for when every non-zero ideal in a relative Cuntz-Pimsner ring contains a non-zero graded ideal, when a relative Cuntz-Pimsner ring is simple, and when every ideal in a relative Cuntz-Pimsner ring is graded, are given. A "Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorem" for relative Cuntz-Pimsner rings is also given and condition (L) and condition (K) for relative Cuntz-Pimsner rings are introduced.
We establish exact sequences in $KK$-theory for graded relative Cuntz-Pimsner algebras associated to nondegenerate $C^*$-correspondences. We use this to calculate the graded $K$-theory and $K$-homology of relative Cuntz-Krieger algebras of directed graphs for gradings induced by $\{0,1\}$-valued labellings of their edge sets.
For any reduced amalgamated free product $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra $(A,E)=(A_1, E_1) \ast_D (A_2,E_2)$, we introduce and study a canonical ambient $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra $Δ\mathbf{T}(A,E)$ of $A$ which generalizes the crossed product arising from the canonical action of an amalgamated free product group on the compactification of the associated Bass--Serre tree. Using an explicit identification of $Δ\mathbf{T}(A,E)$ with a Cuntz--Pimsner algebra we prove two kinds of "amenability" results for $Δ\mathbf{T}(A,E)$; nuclearity and universality. As applications of our framework, we provide new concept…
We define a notion of dynamical pressure at a self-adjoint element for a contractive completely positive self-map of an exact C*-algebra which adopts Voiculescu's approximation approach to noncommutative entropy and extends the Voiculescu-Brown topological entropy and Neshveyev-Stormer unital-nuclear pressure. A variational inequality bounding the pressure below by the free energies with respect to the Sauvageot-Thouvenot entropy is established in two stages via the introduction of a local state approximation entropy, whose associated free energies function as an intermediate term. Pimsner C*-…
Suppose a C*-algebra A acts by adjointable operators on a Hilbert A-module X. Pimsner constructed a C*-algebra O_X which includes, for particular choices of X, crossed products of A by Z, the Cuntz algebras O_n, and the Cuntz-Krieger algebras O_B. Here we analyse the representations of the corresponding Toeplitz algebra. One consequence is a uniqueness theorem for the Toeplitz-Cuntz-Krieger algebras of directed graphs, which includes Cuntz's uniqueness theorem for O_\infty.
By using C*-correspondences and Cuntz-Pimsner algebras, we associate to every subshift (also called a shift space) $X$ a C*-algebra $O_X$, which is a generalization of the Cuntz-Krieger algebras. We show that $O_X$ is the universal C*-algebra generated by partial isometries satisfying relations given by $X$. We also show that $O_X$ is a one-sided conjugacy invariant of $X$.
We interpret several constructions with C*-algebras as colimits in the bicategory of correspondences. This includes crossed products for actions of groups and crossed modules, Cuntz-Pimsner algebras of proper product systems, direct sums and inductive limits, and certain amalgamated free products.
We study several notions of shift equivalence for C*-correspondences and the effect that these equivalences have on the corresponding Pimsner dilations. Among others, we prove that non-degenerate, regular, full C*-correspondences which are shift equivalent have strong Morita equivalent Pimsner dilations. We also establish that the converse may not be true. These results settle open problems in the literature. In the context of C*-algebras, we prove that if two non-degenerate, regular, full C*-correspondences are shift equivalent, then their corresponding Cuntz-Pimsner algebras are strong Morit…
Given a quantum graph $\mathcal{G}=(B,ψ,A)$, we define a C*-correspondence $E_\mathcal{G}$ over the noncommutative vertex C*-algebra $B$, called the quantum edge correspondence. For a classical graph $\mathcal{G}$, $E_\mathcal{G}$ is the usual graph correspondence spanned by the edges of $\mathcal{G}$. When the quantum adjacency matrix $A\colon B\to B$ is completely positive, we show that $E_\mathcal{G}$ is faithful if and only if $\ker(A)$ does not contain a central summand of $B$. In this case, we show that the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra $\mathcal{O}_{E_\mathcal{G}}$ is isomorphic to a quotient o…
From a planar algebra, we give a functorial construction to produce numerous associated $C^*$-algebras. Our main construction is a Hilbert $C^*$-bimodule with a canonical real subspace which produces Pimsner-Toeplitz, Cuntz-Pimsner, and generalized free semicircular $C^*$-algebras. By compressing this system, we obtain various canonical $C^*$-algebras, including Doplicher-Roberts algebras, Guionnet-Jones-Shlyakhtenko algebras, universal (Toeplitz-)Cuntz-Krieger algebras, and the newly introduced free graph algebras. This is the first article in a series studying canonical $C^*$-algebras associ…
Let $E$ be a finite directed graph with no sources or sinks and write $X_E$ for the graph correspondence. We study the $C^*$-algebra $C^*(E,Z):=\mathcal{T}(X_E,Z)/\mathcal{K}$ where $\mathcal{T}(X_E,Z)$ is the $C^*$-algebra generated by weighted shifts on the Fock correspondence $\mathcal{F}(X_E)$ given by a weight sequence $\{Z_k\}$ of operators $Z_k\in \mathcal{L}(X_{E^{k}})$ and $\mathcal{K}$ is the algebra of compact operators on the Fock correspondence. If $Z_k=I$ for every $k$, $C^*(E,Z)$ is the Cuntz-Krieger algebra associated with the graph $E$. We show that $C^*(E,Z)$ can be realized …
We define a notion of strong shift equivalence for $C^*$-correspondences and show that strong shift equivalent $C^*$-correspondences have strongly Morita equivalent Cuntz-Pimsner algebras. Our analysis extends the fact that strong shift equivalent square matrices with non-negative integer entries give stably isomorphic Cuntz-Krieger algebras.
Pimsner introduced the C*-algebra O_X generated by a Hilbert bimodule X over a C*-algebra A. We look for additional conditions that X should satisfy in order to study simplicity and, more generally, the ideal structure of O_X when X is finite projective. We introduce two conditions: `(I)-freeness' and `(II)-freeness', stronger than the former, in analogy with [J. Cuntz, W. Krieger, Invent. Math. 56, 251-268] and [J. Cuntz, Invent. Math. 63, 25-40] respectively. (I)-freeness comprehend the case of the bimodules associated with an inclusion of simple C*-algebras with finite index, real or pseudo…
We study strong compactly aligned product systems of $\mathbb{Z}_+^N$ over a C*-algebra $A$. We provide a description of their Cuntz-Nica-Pimsner algebra in terms of tractable relations coming from ideals of $A$. This approach encompasses product systems where the left action is given by compacts, as well as a wide class of higher rank graphs (beyond row-finite). Moreover we analyze higher rank factorial languages and their C*-algebras. Many of the rank one results in the literature find here their higher rank analogues. In particular, we show that the Cuntz-Nica-Pimsner algebra of a higher ra…
Every directed graph defines a Hilbert space and a family of weighted shifts that act on the space. We identify a natural notion of periodicity for such shifts and study their C*-algebras. We prove the algebras generated by all shifts of a fixed period are of Cuntz-Krieger and Toeplitz-Cuntz-Krieger type. The limit C*-algebras determined by an increasing sequence of positive integers, each dividing the next, are proved to be isomorphic to Cuntz-Pimsner algebras and the linking maps are shown to arise as factor maps. We derive a characterization of simplicity and compute the $K$-groups for thes…
To an arbitrary directed graph we associate a row-finite directed graph whose C*-algebra contains the C*-algebra of the original graph as a full corner. This allows us to generalize results for C*-algebras of row-finite graphs to C*-algebras of arbitrary graphs: the uniqueness theorem, simplicity criteria, descriptions of the ideals and primitive ideal space, and conditions under which a graph algebra is AF and purely infinite. Our proofs require only standard Cuntz-Krieger techniques and do not rely on powerful constructs such as groupoids, Exel-Laca algebras, or Cuntz-Pimsner algebras.
For a directed graph $E$, we compute the $K$-theory of the $C^*$-algebra $C^*(E)$ from the Cuntz-Krieger generators and relations. First we compute the $K$-theory of the crossed product $C^*(E)\times_γ\IT$, and then using duality and the Pimsner-Voiculescu exact sequence we compute the $K$-theory of $C^*(E)\otimes\CK \cong (C^*(E)\times\IT)\times\IZ$. The method relies on the decomposition of $C^*(E)$ as an inductive limit of Toeplitz graph $C^*$-algebras, indexed by the finite subgraphs of $E$. The proof and result require no special asssumptions about the graph, and is given in graph-theoret…
Topological quivers are generalizations of directed graphs in which the sets of vertices and edges are locally compact Hausdorff spaces. Associated to such a topological quiver Q is a C*-correspondence, and from this correspondence one may construct a Cuntz-Pimsner algebra C*(Q). In this paper we develop the general theory of topological quiver C*-algebras and show how certain C*-algebras found in the literature may be viewed from this general perspective. In particular, we show that C*-algebras of topological quivers generalize the well-studied class of graph C*-algebras and in analogy with t…
We study conditions that ensure uniqueness theorems of Cuntz-Krieger type for relative Cuntz-Pimsner algebras $\mathcal{O}(J,X)$ associated to a $C^*$-correspondence $X$ over a $C^*$-algebra $A$. We give general sufficient conditions phrased in terms of a multivalued map $\widehat{X}$ acting on the spectrum $\widehat{A}$ of $A$. When $X(J)$ is of Type I we construct a directed graph dual to $X$ and prove a uniqueness theorem using this graph. When $X(J)$ is liminal, we show that topological freeness of this graph is equivalent to the uniqueness property for $\mathcal{O}(J,X)$, as well as to an…
We use product systems of $C^*$-correspondences to introduce twisted $C^*$-algebras of topological higher-rank graphs. We define the notion of a continuous $\mathbb{T}$-valued $2$-cocycle on a topological higher-rank graph, and present examples of such cocycles on large classes of topological higher-rank graphs. To every proper, source-free topological higher-rank graph $Λ$, and continuous $\mathbb{T}$-valued $2$-cocycle $c$ on $Λ$, we associate a product system $X$ of $C_0(Λ^0)$-correspondences built from finite paths in $Λ$. We define the twisted Cuntz--Krieger algebra $C^*(Λ,c)$ to be the C…
We consider Exel's interaction $(V,H)$ over a unital $C^*$-algebra $A$, such that $V(A)$ and $H(A)$ are hereditary subalgebras of $A$. For the associated crossed product, we obtain a uniqueness theorem, ideal lattice description, simplicity criterion and a version of Pimsner-Voiculescu exact sequence. These results cover the case of crossed products by endomorphisms with hereditary ranges and complementary kernels. As model examples of interactions not coming from endomorphisms we introduce and study in detail interactions arising from finite graphs. The interaction $(V,H)$ associated to a gra…
Given a countably infinite 0-1 matrix A without identically zero rows, let O_A be the Cuntz-Krieger algebra recently introduced by the authors and T_A be the Toeplitz extension of O_A, once the latter is seen as a Cuntz-Pimsner algebra, as recently shown by Szymanski. We study the KMS equilibrium states of C*-dynamical systems based on O_A and T_A, with dynamics satisfying σ_t(s_x) = N_x^{it} s_x for the canonical generating partial isometries s_x and arbitrary real numbers N_x > 1. The KMS_βstates on both O_A and T_A are completely characterized for certain values of the inverse temperature β…
