Assume A is a Frechet algebra equipped with a smooth isometric action of a vector group V, and consider Rieffel's deformation A_J of A. We construct an explicit isomorphism between the smooth crossed products V\ltimes\A_J and V\ltimes\A. When combined with the Elliott-Natsume-Nest isomorphism, this immediately implies that the periodic cyclic cohomology is invariant under deformation. Specializing to the case of smooth subalgebras of C*-algebras, we also get a simple proof of equivalence of Rieffel's and Kasprzak's approaches to deformation.
We start from Rieffel data (A,f,X) where A is a C*-algebra, X is an action of an abelian group H on A and f is a 2-cocycle on the dual group. Using Landstad theory of crossed product we get a deformed C*-algebra A(f). In the case of H being the n-th Cartesian product of the real numbers we obtain a very simple proof of invariance of K-groups under the deformation. In the general case we also get a very simple proof that nuclearity is preserved under the deformation. We show how our approach leads to quantum groups and investigate their duality. The general theory is illustrated by an example o…
To a continuous action of a vector group on a $C^*$-algebra, twisted by the imaginary exponential of a symplectic form, one associates a Rieffel deformed algebra as well as a twisted crossed product. We show that the second one is isomorphic to the tensor product of the first one with the $C^*$-algebra of compact operators in a separable Hilbert space and we indicate some applications.
The bundle map $π_{h}: Γ((A_{tJ})_{t\in [0,1]})\lra A_{hJ}$, for every $h\in [0,1]$, of the continuous field $(A_{tJ})_{t\in [0,1]}$ associated to the Rieffel deformation $A_{J}$ of a C*-algebra $A$ is shown to be a KK-equivalence by using a 2-cocycle twisting approach and RKK-fibrations.
We give an introduction into the ideal structure and representation theory of crossed products by actions of locally compact groups on C*-algebras. In particular, we discuss the Mackey-Rieffel-Green theory of induced representations of crossed products and groups. Although we do not give complete proofs of all results, we try at least to explain the main ideas. For a more detailed exposition of many of the results presented here we refer to the beautiful recent book by Dana Williams.
We introduce a discrete deformation of Rieffel type for finite (quantum) groups. Using this, we give a non-trivial example of a finite quantum group of order 18. We also give a deformation of finite groups of Lie type by using their maximal abelian subgroups.
Suppose that a locally compact group $G$ acts freely and properly on the right of a locally compact space $T$. Rieffel proved that if $α$ is an action of $G$ on a $C^*$-algebra $A$ and there is an equivariant embedding of $C_0(T)$ in $M(A)$, then the action $α$ of $G$ on $A$ is proper, and the crossed product $A\rtimes_{α,r}G$ is Morita equivalent to a generalised fixed-point algebra $\Fix(A,α)$ in $M(A)^α$. We show that the assignment $(A,α)\mapsto\Fix(A,α)$ extends to a functor $\Fix$ on a category of $C^*$-dynamical systems in which the isomorphisms are Morita equivalences, and that Rieffel…
We consider two categories of C*-algebras; in the first, the isomorphisms are ordinary isomorphisms, and in the second, the isomorphisms are Morita equivalences. We show how these two categories, and categories of dynamical systems based on them, crop up in a variety of C*-algebraic contexts. We show that Rieffel's construction of a fixed-point algebra for a proper action can be made into functors defined on these categories, and that his Morita equivalence then gives a natural isomorphism between these functors and crossed-product functors. These results have interesting applications to non-a…
We show that Rieffel's deformation sends covariant C(T)-algebras into C(T)-algebras. We also treat the lower semi-continuity issue, proving that Rieffel's deformation transforms covariant continuous fields of C*-algebras into continuous fields of C*-algebras. Some examples are indicated, including certain quantum groups.
We develop the twisting construction for locally compact quantum groups. A new feature, in contrast to the previous work of M. Enock and the second author, is a non-trivial deformation of the Haar measure. Then we construct Rieffel's deformation of locally compact quantum groups and show that it is dual to the twisting. This allows to give new interesting concrete examples of locally compact quantum groups, in particular, deformations of the classical $az+b$ group and of the Woronowicz' quantum $az+b$ group.
With an action $α$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$ on a $C^*$-algebra $A$ and a skew-symmetric $n\times n$ matrix $Θ$ one can consider the Rieffel deformation $A_Θ$ of $A$, which is a $C^*$-algebra generated by the $α$-smooth elements of $A$ with a new multiplication. The purpose of this paper is to obtain explicit formulas for $K$-theoretical quantities defined by elements of $A_Θ$. We assume that there is a densely defined trace on $A$, invariant under the action. We give an explicit realization of Thom class in $KK$ in any dimension $n$, and use it in the index pairings. When $n$ is odd, for example, we …
In this paper we consider C*-algebraic deformations a la Rieffel and show that every state of the undeformed algebra can be deformed into a state of the deformed algebra in the sense of a continuous field of states. The construction is explicit and involves a convolution operator with a particular Gauss function.
Let H be a closed subgroup of a locally compact group G and let X=G/H be the quotient space of left cosets. Let C*X be the corresponding G-C*-algebra of continuous functions on X, vanishing at infinity. Suppose that L is a closed abelian subgroup of H and let f be a 2-cocycle on the dual group of L. Let G(f) be the Rieffel deformation of G. Using these data we may construct G(f)-C*-algebra C*X(f) - the Rieffel deformation of C*X. On the other hand we may perform the Rieffel deformation of the subgroup H obtaining the closed quantum subgroup H(f) of G(f) which in turn, by the results of Vaes, l…
In this paper we apply Rieffel deformation to C*- tensor product viewed as a functor on the category of C*-algebras with an abelian group action. In the case of the Rieffel deformation of a quantum group with the action by automorphisms the deformed tensor product enables us to view the deformed object as a braided quantum group. We construct a bicharacter for a braided quantum group and the dual braided quantum group. We employ our method to get a braided quantum Minkowski space. Its description in terms of the deformed space-time coordinates is provided.
Let G be a locally compact group, H an abelian subgroup and let f be a continuous 2-cocycle on the dual group of H. Let B be a C*-algebra equipped with a continuous right coaction of G. Using Rieffel deformation, we can construct a quantum group G(f) and the deformed C*-algebra B(f). The aim of this paper is to show that B(f) is equipped with a continuous coaction of G(f). The transition from the original coaction to its deformed counterpart is nontrivial in the sense that the deformed one contains complete information about the undeformed one. In order to illustrate our construction we apply …
Given a C*-dynamical system (A,G,α), we discuss conditions under which subalgebras of the multiplier algebra M(A) consisting of fixed points for αare Morita-Rieffel equivalent to ideals in the crossed product of A by G. In case G is abelian we also develop a spectral theory, giving a necessary and sufficient condition for αto be equivalent to the dual action on the cross-sectional C*-algebra of a Fell bundle. In our main application we show that a proper action of an abelian group on a locally compact space is equivalent to a dual action.
The quantum Heisenberg manifolds are noncommutive manifolds constructed by M. Rieffel as strict deformation quantizations of Heisenberg manifolds and have been studied by various authors. Rieffel constructed the quantum Heisenberg manifolds as the generalized fixed-point algebras of certain crossed product $C^*$-algebras, and they also can be realized as crossed products of $C(\mathbb{T}^2)$ by Hilbert $C^*$-bimodules in the sense of Abadie et al. In this paper, we describe how the quantum Heisenberg manifolds can also be realized as twisted groupoid $C^*$-algebras.
We consider a fixed free and proper action of a locally compact group $G$ on a space $T$, and actions $α:G\to \Aut A$ on $C^*$-algebras for which there is an equivariant embedding of $(C_0(T),\rt)$ in $(M(A),α)$. A recent theorem of Rieffel implies that $α$ is proper and saturated with respect to the subalgebra $C_0(T)AC_0(T)$ of $A$, so that his general theory of proper actions gives a Morita equivalence between $A\rtimes_{α,r}G$ and a generalised fixed-point algebra $A^α$. Here we investigate the functor $(A,α)\mapsto A^α$ and the naturality of Rieffel's Morita equivalence, focusing in parti…
Warped convolutions of operators were recently introduced in the algebraic framework of quantum physics as a new constructive tool. It is shown here that these convolutions provide isometric representations of Rieffel's strict deformations of C*-dynamical systems with automorphic actions of R^n, whenever the latter are presented in a covariant representation. Moreover, the device can be used for the deformation of relativistic quantum field theories by adjusting the convolutions to the geometry of Minkowski space. The resulting deformed theories still comply with pertinent physical principles …
We first describe a Rieffel induction system for groupoid crossed products. We then use this induction system to show that, given a regular groupoid $G$ and a dynamical system $(A,G,α)$, every irreducible representation of $A\rtimes G$ is induced from a representation of the group crossed product $A(u)\rtimes S_u$ where $u\in G\unit$, $A(u)$ is a fibre of $A$, and $S_u$ is a stabilizer subgroup of $G$.
We apply the One-Sided Action Theorem from the first paper in this series to prove that Rieffel's Morita equivalence between the reduced crossed product by a proper saturated action and the generalized fixed-point algebra is a quotient of a Morita equivalence between the full crossed product and a "universal" fixed-point algebra. We give several applications, to Fell bundles over groups, reduced crossed products as fixed-point algebras, and C*-bundles.
We consider $C^*$-algebras constructed from compact group actions on complex vector bundles $E\to X$ endowed with a Hermitian metric. An action of $G$ by isometries on $E\to X$ induces an action on the $C^*$-correspondence $Γ(E)$ over $C(X)$ consisting of continuous sections, and on the associated Cuntz-Pimsner algebra $\mathcal O_E$, so we can study the crossed product $\mathcal O_E\rtimes G$. If the action is free and rank $E=n$, then we prove that $\mathcal O_E\rtimes G$ is Morita-Rieffel equivalent to a field of Cuntz algebras $\mathcal O_n$ over the orbit space $X/G$. If the action is fib…
The graph C*-algebra of a directed graph E is the universal C*-algebra generated by a family of partial isometries satisfying relations which reflect the path structure of E. In the first part of this paper we consider coverings of directed graphs: morphisms p:F->E which are local isomorphisms. We show that the graph algebra C*(F) can be recovered from C*(E) as a crossed product by a coaction of a homogeneous space associated to the fundamental group π_1 (E). These crossed products provide a good model for a general theory of crossed products by homogeneous spaces. The second part of the paper…
Let G and H be two locally compact groups acting on a C*-algebra A by commuting actions. We construct an action on the crossed product AXG out of a unitary 2-cocycle u and the action of H on A. For A commutative, and free and proper actions of G and H, we show that if the roles of these two actions are reversed, and u is replaced by u*, then the corresponding generalized fixed-point algebras, in the sense of Rieffel, are strong-Morita equivalent. We apply this result to the computation of the K-theory of quantum Heisenberg manifolds.
Given a C*-dynamical system (A,G,α), we say that A is a weakly proper (X\rtimes G)-algebra if there exists a proper G-space X together with a nondegenerate G-equivariant *-homomorphism ϕ:C_0(X)->M(A). Weakly proper G-algebras form a large subclass of the class of proper G-algebras in the sense of Rieffel. In this paper we show that weakly proper (X\rtimes G)-algebras allow the construction of full fixed-point algebras A^G corresponding to the full crossed product A\rtimes_αG, thus solving, in this setting, a problem stated by Rieffel in his 1988's original article on proper actions. As an appl…
We construct a non-formal deformation machinery for the actions of the Heisenberg supergroup analogue to the one developed by M. Rieffel for the actions of R^d. However, the method used here differs from Rieffel's one: we obtain a Universal Deformation Formula for the actions of R^{m|n} as a byproduct of Weyl ordered Kirillov's orbit method adapted to the graded setting. To do so, we have to introduce the notion of C*-superalgebra, which is compatible with the deformation, and which can be seen as corresponding to noncommutative superspaces. We also use this construction to interpret the renor…
We consider a class of C*-algebras associated to one parameter continuous tensor product systems of Hilbert modules, which can be viewed as continuous counterparts of Pimsner's Toeplitz algebras. By exhibiting a homotopy of quasihomomorphisms, we prove that those algebras are $K$-contractible. One special case is closely related to the Rieffel-Wiener-Hopf extension of a crossed product by R considered by Rieffel and by Pimsner and Voiculescu, and can be used to produce a new proof of Connes' analogue of the Thom isomorphism and in particular of Bott periodicity. Another special case is closely…
Suppose a locally compact group G acts freely and properly on a locally compact Hausdorff space X, and let gamma be the induced action on C_0(X). We consider a category in which the objects are C*-dynamical systems (A, G, alpha) for which there is an equivariant homomorphism of (C_0(X), gamma) into the multiplier algebra M(A). Rieffel has shown that such systems are proper and saturated, and hence have a generalized fixed-point algebra A^alpha which is Morita equivalent to A times_{alpha,r} G. We show that the assignment (A, alpha) maps to A^alpha is functorial, and that Rieffel's Morita equiv…
Suppose that a compact quantum group Q acts faithfully and isomet- rically (in the sense of [10]) on a smooth compact, oriented, connected Riemannian manifold M . If the manifold is stably parallelizable then it is shown that the compact quantum group is necessarily commutative as a C \ast algebra i.e. Q = C(G) for some compact group G. Using this, it is also proved that the quantum isometry group of Rieffel deformation of such manifold M must be a Rieffel-Wang deformation of C(ISO(M))
It is shown that a C*-algebra generated by any faithful covariant representation of a Hilbert bimodule X is canonically isomorphic to the crossed product associated to X provided that Rieffel's induced representation functor X-ind is topologically free. It is discussed how this result could be applied to universal C*-algebras generated by relations with a circle gauge action. In particular, it leads to generalizations of isomorphism theorems for various crossed products, and is shown to be equivalent to Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorem for finite graph C*-algebras (on that occasion an intrigui…
The first imprimitivity theorems identified the representations of groups or dynamical systems which are induced from representations of a subgroup. Symmetric imprimitivity theorems identify pairs of crossed products by different groups which are Morita equivalent, and hence have the same representation theory. Here we consider commuting actions of groups $H$ and $K$ on a $C^*$-algebra which are saturated and proper as defined by Rieffel in 1990. Our main result says that the resulting Morita equivalence of crossed products is natural in the sense that it is compatible with homomorphisms and i…
We consider a class of proper actions of locally compact groups on imprimitivity bimodules over C*-algebras which behave like the proper actions on C*-algebras introduced by Rieffel in 1988. We prove that every such action gives rise to a Morita equivalence between a crossed product and a generalized fixed-point algebra, and in doing so make several innovations which improve the applicability of Rieffel's theory. We then show how our construction can be used to obtain canonical tensor-product decompositions of important Morita equivalences. Our results show, for example, that the different pro…
It is shown that topological freeness of Rieffel's induced representation functor implies that any $C^*$-algebra generated by a faithful covariant representation of a Hilbert bimodule $X$ over a $C^*$-algebra $A$ is canonically isomorphic to the crossed product $A\rtimes_X \mathbb{Z}$. An ideal lattice description and a simplicity criterion for $A\rtimes_X \mathbb{Z}$ are established.
In this work various symbol spaces with values in a sequentially complete locally convex vector space are introduced and discussed. They are used to define vector-valued oscillatory integrals which allow to extend Rieffel's strict deformation quantization to the framework of sequentially complete locally convex algebras and modules with separately continuous products and module structures, making use of polynomially bounded actions of $\mathbb{R}^n$. Several well-known integral formulas for star products are shown to fit into this general setting, and a new class of examples involving compactl…
In the first part of the paper, we develop a theory of crossed products of a $C^*$-algebra $A$ by an arbitrary (not necessarily extendible) endomorphism $α:A\to A$. We consider relative crossed products $C^*(A,α;J)$ where $J$ is an ideal in $A$, and describe up to Morita-Rieffel equivalence all gauge invariant ideals in $C^*(A,α;J)$ and give six term exact sequences determining their $K$-theory. We also obtain certain criteria implying that all ideals in $C^*(A,α;J)$ are gauge invariant, and that $C^*(A,α;J)$ is purely infinite. In the second part, we consider a situation where $A$ is a $C_0(X…
A method for deforming C*-algebras is introduced, which applies to C*-algebras that can be described as the cross-sectional C*-algebra of a Fell bundle. Several well known examples of non-commutative algebras, usually obtained by deforming commutative ones by various methods, are shown to fit our unified perspective of deformation via Fell bundles. Examples are the non-commutative spheres of Matsumoto, the non-commutative lens spaces of Matsumoto and Tomiyama, and the quantum Heisenberg manifolds of Rieffel. In a special case, in which the deformation arises as a result of an action of R^{2d},…
The adiabatic groupoid $\mathcal{G}_{ad}$ of a smooth groupoid $\mathcal{G}$ is a deformation relating $\mathcal{G}$ with its algebroid. In a previous work, we constructed a natural action of $\mathbb{R}$ on the C*-algebra of zero order pseudodifferential operators on $\mathcal{G}$ and identified the crossed product with a natural ideal $J(\mathcal{G})$ of $C^*(\mathcal{G}_{ad})$. In the present paper we show that $C^*(\mathcal{G}_{ad})$ itself is a pseudodifferential extension of this crossed product in a sense introduced by Saad Baaj. Let us point out that we prove our results in a slightly …
We give some sufficient conditions for the injectivity of actions of compact quantum groups on $C^{\ast}$-algebra. As an application, we prove that any faithful smooth action by a compact quantum group on a compact smooth (not necessarily connected) manifold is injective. A similar result is proved for actions on $C^{\ast}$- algebras obtained by Rieffel-deformation of compact, smooth manifolds.
We consider the $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{E}_{n,m}^q$, which is a $q$-twist of two Cuntz-Toeplitz algebras. For the case $|q|<1$, we give an explicit formula which untwists the $q$-deformation showing that the isomorphism class of $\mathcal{E}_{n,m}^q$ does not depend on $q$. For the case $|q|=1$, we give an explicit description of all ideals in $\mathcal{E}_{n,m}^q$. In particular, we show that $\mathcal{E}_{n,m}^q$ contains a unique largest ideal $\mathcal{M}_q$. We identify $\mathcal{E}_{n,m}^q / \mathcal{M}_q$ with the Rieffel deformation of $\mathcal{O}_n \otimes \mathcal{O}_m$ and use a K-…
The main objective of this article is to develop the theory of deformation of $C^*$-algebras endowed with a group action, from the perspective of non-formal equivariant quantization. This program, initiated in \cite{Bieliavsky-Gayral}, aims to extend Rieffel's deformation theory \cite{Ri} for more general groups than $\mathbb R^d$. In \cite{Bieliavsky-Gayral}, we have constructed such a theory for a class of non-Abelian Lie groups. In the present article, we study the somehow opposite situation of Abelian but non-Lie groups. More specifically, we construct here a deformation theory of $C^*$-al…
We consider $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{E}_{n,m}^q$, which is a $q$-twist of two Cuntz-Toeplitz algebras. For the case $|q|<1$ we give an explicit formula, which untwists the $q$-deformation, thus showing that the isomorphism class of $\mathcal{E}_{n,m}^q$ does not depend of $q$. For the case $|q|=1$ we give an explicit description of all ideals in $\mathcal{E}_{n,m}^q$. In particular $\mathcal{E}_{n,m}^q$ contains unique largest ideal $\mathcal{M}_q$. Then we identify $\mathcal{E}_{n,m}^q / \mathcal{M}_q$ with the Rieffel deformation of $\mathcal{O}_n \otimes \mathcal{O}_m$ and use a K-theoretica…

We analyze Hecke pairs (G,H) and the associated Hecke algebra when G is a semidirect product N x Q and H = M x R for subgroups M of N and R of Q with M normal in N. Conditions are given in terms of N, Q, M, and R which are equivalent to the Hecke condition on (G,H), and the Schlichting completion of (G,H) is identified in terms of completions of N, Q, M, and R. Our main result shows that (assuming (G,H) coincides with its Schlichting completion) when R is normal in Q, the closure of the Hecke algebra in C*(G) is Morita-Rieffel equivalent to a crossed product I x Q/R, where I is a certain ideal…
Let $\mathbb B$ be a Lie group admitting a left-invariant negatively curved Kählerian structure. Consider a strongly continuous action $α$ of $\mathbb B$ on a Fréchet algebra $\mathcal A$. Denote by $\mathcal A^\infty$ the associated Fréchet algebra of smooth vectors for the action $α$. In the Abelian case $\mathbb B=\mathbb R^{2n}$ and $α$ isometric, Marc Rieffel proved that Weyl's operator symbol composition formula yields a deformation through Fréchet algebra structures ${\star_θ^α}_{θ\in\mathbb R}$ on $\mathcal A^\infty$. When $\mathcal A$ is a $C^\star$-algebra, every deformed algebra $(\…
We use a Heegaard splitting of the topological 3-sphere as a guiding principle to construct a family of its noncommutative deformations. The main technical point is an identification of the universal C*-algebras defining our quantum 3-spheres with an appropriate fiber product of crossed-product C*-algebras. Then we employ this result to show that the K-groups of our family of noncommutative 3-spheres coincide with their classical counterparts.
We introduce magnetic twisted actions of X=R^n on general abelian C*-algebras and study the associated twisted crossed product and pseudodifferential algebras in the framework of strict deformation quantization.
We consider a "twisted" noncommutative join procedure for unital $C^*$-algebras which admit actions by a compact abelian group $G$ and its discrete abelian dual $Γ$, so that we may investigate an analogue of Baum-Dabrowski-Hajac noncommutative Borsuk-Ulam theory in the twisted setting. Namely, under what conditions is it guaranteed that an equivariant map $ϕ$ from a unital $C^*$-algebra $A$ to the twisted join of $A$ and $C^*(Γ)$ cannot exist? This pursuit is motivated by the twisted analogues of even spheres, which admit the same $K_0$ groups as even spheres and have an analogous Borsuk-Ulam …
