In this paper we consider C*-algebraic deformations a la Rieffel and show that every state of the undeformed algebra can be deformed into a state of the deformed algebra in the sense of a continuous field of states. The construction is explicit and involves a convolution operator with a particular Gauss function.
We review a recent result on Rieffel's deformation quantization by actions of R^d: it is shown that for every state omega_0 of the undeformed C*-algebra A_0 there is a continuous section of states omega(hbar) through omega_0. We outline the physical interpretation in terms of quantization.
A new approach to the quantization of constrained or otherwise reduced classical mechanical systems is proposed. On the classical side, the generalized symplectic reduction procedure of Mikami and Weinstein, as further extended by Xu in connection with symplectic equivalence bimodules and Morita equivalence of Poisson manifolds, is rewritten so as to avoid the use of symplectic groupoids, whose quantum analogue is unknown. A theorem on symplectic reduction in stages is given. This allows one to discern that the `quantization' of the generalized moment map consists of an operator-valued inner p…
In this paper we consider algebras with involution over a ring C which is given by the quadratic extension by i of an ordered ring R. We discuss the *-representation theory of such *-algebras on pre-Hilbert spaces over C and develop the notions of Rieffel induction and formal Morita equivalence for this category analogously to the situation for C^*-algebras. Throughout this paper the notion of positive functionals and positive algebra elements will be crucial for all constructions. As in the case of C^*-algebras, we show that the GNS construction of *-representations can be understood as Rieff…
We construct a non-formal deformation machinery for the actions of the Heisenberg supergroup analogue to the one developed by M. Rieffel for the actions of R^d. However, the method used here differs from Rieffel's one: we obtain a Universal Deformation Formula for the actions of R^{m|n} as a byproduct of Weyl ordered Kirillov's orbit method adapted to the graded setting. To do so, we have to introduce the notion of C*-superalgebra, which is compatible with the deformation, and which can be seen as corresponding to noncommutative superspaces. We also use this construction to interpret the renor…
For any Lie groupoid $G$, the vector bundle $g^*$ dual to the associated Lie algebroid $g$ is canonically a Poisson manifold. The (reduced) C*-algebra of $G$ (as defined by A. Connes) is shown to be a strict quantization (in the sense of M. Rieffel) of $g^*$. This is proved using a generalization of Weyl's quantization prescription on flat space. Many other known strict quantizations are a special case of this procedure; on a Riemannian manifold, one recovers Connes' tangent groupoid as well as a recent generalization of Weyl's prescription. When $G$ is the gauge groupoid of a principal bundle…
Quantization relates Poisson algebras to $C^*$-algebras. The analysis of local gauge symmetries in algebraic quantum field theory is approached through the quantization of classical gauge theories, regarded as constrained dynamical systems. This approach is based on the analogy between symplectic reduction and Rieffel induction on the classical and on the quantum side, respectively. Thus one is led to a description of e.g. $θ$-angles and gauge anomalies in the algebraic setting.
We discuss the procedure of Rieffel induction of representations in the framework of formal deformation quantization of Poisson manifolds. We focus on the central role played by algebraic notions of complete positivity.
We present explicit universal strict deformation quantization formulae for actions of Iwasawa subgroups AN of SU(1,n). This answers a question raised by Rieffel.
Recently, we introduced a mathematical framework for the quantization of a particle in a variable magnetic field. It consists in a modified form of the Weyl pseudodifferential calculus and a C*-algebraic setting, these two points of view being isomorphic in a suitable sense. In the present paper we leave Planck's constant vary, showing that one gets a strict deformation quantization in the sense of Rieffel. In the limit h --> 0 one recovers a Poisson algebra induced by a symplectic form defined in terms of the magnetic field.
In this review we discuss various aspects of representation theory in deformation quantization starting with a detailed introduction to the concepts of states as positive functionals and the GNS construction. But also Rieffel induction of representations as well as strong Morita equivalence, the Dirac monopole and the strong Picard groupoid are discussed.
In this note, we study Schwarz's conjecture on application of Q-algebras to strict quantization. We prove that in the case of a torus with a constant Poisson structure, Schwarz's formalism gives the same star product as Rieffel \cite{rif:quantization}. We construct twisted Fock modules as examples of quantization dg-modules in the case of a compact Kähler manifold. In particular, we relate this construction on $\complex\mathbb{P}^1$ to representations of a fuzzy sphere.
In the framework of C*-algebraic deformation quantization we propose a notion of deformation groupoid which could apply to known examples e.g. Connes' tangent groupoid of a manifold, its generalisation by Landsman and Ramazan, Rieffel's noncommutative torus, and even Landi's noncommutative 4-sphere. We construct such groupoid for a wide class of T^n-spaces, that generalizes the one given for C^n by Bellissard and Vittot. In particular, using the geometric properties of the moment map discovered in the '80s by Atiyah, Delzant, Guillemin and Sternberg, it provides a \cstar-algebraic deformation …
In this paper, we initiate the study of a parametrised version of Rieffel's strict deformation quantization. We apply it to give a classification of noncommutative principal torus bundles, in terms of parametrised strict deformation quantization of ordinary principal torus bundles. The paper also contains a putative definition of noncommutative non-principal torus bundles.
This work is a contribution to the area of Strict Quantization (in the sense of Rieffel) in the presence of curvature and non-Abelian group actions. More precisely, we use geometry to obtain explicit oscillatory integral formulae for strongly invariant strict deformation quantizations of a class of solvable symplectic symmetric spaces. Each of these quantizations gives rise to a field of (pre)-C*-algebras whose fibers are function algebras which are closed under the deformed product. The symmetry group of the symmetric space acts on each fiber by C*-algebra automorphisms.
In this work various symbol spaces with values in a sequentially complete locally convex vector space are introduced and discussed. They are used to define vector-valued oscillatory integrals which allow to extend Rieffel's strict deformation quantization to the framework of sequentially complete locally convex algebras and modules with separately continuous products and module structures, making use of polynomially bounded actions of $\mathbb{R}^n$. Several well-known integral formulas for star products are shown to fit into this general setting, and a new class of examples involving compactl…
We address one of the open problems in quantization theory recently listed by Rieffel. By developping in detail Connes' tangent groupoid principle and using previous work by Landsman, we show how to construct a strict, flabby quantization, which is moreover an asymptotic morphism and satisfies the reality and traciality constraints, on any oriented Riemannian manifold. That construction generalizes the standard Moyal rule. The paper can be considered as an introduction to quantization theory from Connes' point of view.
Alternative titles of this paper would have been `Index theory without index' or `The Baum-Connes conjecture without Baum.' In 1989, Rieffel introduced an analytic version of deformation quantization based on the use of continuous fields of C*-algebras. We review how a wide variety of examples of such quantizations can be understood on the basis of a single lemma involving amenable groupoids. These include Weyl-Moyal quantization on manifolds, C*-algebras of Lie groups and Lie groupoids, and the E-theoretic version of the Baum-Connes conjecture for smooth groupoids as described by Connes in hi…
We investigate stochastic quantization as a method to go from a classical PDE (with stochastic time $λ$) to a corresponding quantum theory in the limit $λ\to\infty$. We test the method for a linear PDE satisfied by the free scalar field. We begin by giving some background about the importance of establishing the property of {\em reflection positivity} for the limit $λ\to\infty$. We then prove that the measure determined through stochastic quantization of the free scalar field violates reflection positivity (with respect to reflection of the physical time) for every $λ<\infty$. If a non-linear …
We give an approach to open quantum systems based on formal deformation quantization. It is shown that classical open systems of a certain type can be systematically quantized into quantum open systems preserving the complete positivity of the open time evolution. The usual example of linearly coupled harmonic oscillators is discussed.
$C^*$-algebraic Weyl quantization is extended by allowing also degenerate pre-symplectic forms for the Weyl relations with infinitely many degrees of freedom, and by starting out from enlarged classical Poisson algebras. A powerful tool is found in the construction of Poisson algebras and non-commutative twisted Banach-$*$-algebras on the stage of measures on the not locally compact test function space. Already within this frame strict deformation quantization is obtained, but in terms of Banach-$*$-algebras instead of $C^*$-algebras. Fourier transformation and representation theory of the mea…
The existence of a strict deformation quantization of $X_k=S(M_k({\mathbb{C}}))$, the state space of the $k\times k$ matrices $M_k({\mathbb{C}})$ which is canonically a compact Poisson manifold (with stratified boundary) has recently been proven by both authors and K. Landsman \cite{LMV}. In fact, since increasing tensor powers of the $k\times k$ matrices $M_k({\mathbb{C}})$ are known to give rise to a continuous bundle of $C^*$-algebras over $I=\{0\}\cup 1/\mathbb{N}\subset[0,1]$ with fibers $A_{1/N}=M_k({\mathbb{C}})^{\otimes N}$ and $A_0=C(X_k)$, we were able to define a strict deformation …
Increasing tensor powers of the $k\times k$ matrices $M_k({\mathbb{C}})$ are known to give rise to a continuous bundle of $C^*$-algebras over $I=\{0\}\cup 1/\mathbb{N}\subset[0,1]$ with fibers $A_{1/N}=M_k({\mathbb{C}})^{\otimes N}$ and $A_0=C(X_k)$, where $X_k=S(M_k({\mathbb{C}}))$, the state space of $M_k({\mathbb{C}})$, which is canonically a compact Poisson manifold (with stratified boundary). Our first result is the existence of a strict deformation quantization of $X_k$ à la Rieffel, defined by perfectly natural quantization maps $Q_{1/N}: \tilde{A}_0\rightarrow A_{1/N}$ (where $\tilde{A…
We work out the general features of perturbative field theory on noncommutative manifolds defined by isospectral deformation. These (in general curved) `quantum spaces', generalizing Moyal planes and noncommutative tori, are constructed using Rieffel's theory of deformation quantization for action of $\R^l$. Our framework, incorporating background field methods and tools of QFT in curved spaces, allows to deal both with compact and non-compact spaces, as well as with periodic or not deformations, essentially in the same way. We compute the quantum effective action up to one loop for a scalar t…
We give the Fock representation of a noncommutative $\mathbb{C}P^N$ and gauge theories on it. The Fock representation is constructed based on star products given by deformation quantization with separation of variables and operators which act on states in the Fock space are explicitly described by functions of inhomogeneous coordinates on ${\mathbb C}P^N$. Using the Fock representation, we are able to discuss the positivity of Yang-Mills type actions and the minimal action principle. Other types of actions including the Chern-Simons term are also investigated. BPS-like equations on noncommutat…
