We introduce the notion of a weak (homotopy) moment map associated to a Lie group action on a multisymplectic manifold. We show that the existence/uniqueness theory governing these maps is a direct generalization from symplectic geometry.
We use weak moment maps to extend Noether's theorem from Hamiltonian mechanics by exhibiting a correspondence between multisymplectic conserved quantities and continuous symmetries on a multi-Hamiltonian system. We find that a weak moment map interacts with this correspondence in a way analogous to the moment map in symplectic geometry.
We define a multisymplectic analog of the classical momentum and position functions on the phase space of a physical system by introducing momentum and position forms. We show that these differential forms satisfy generalized Poisson bracket relations extending the classical bracket relations from Hamiltonian mechanics. We also apply our theory to derive some identities on manifolds with a closed $G_2$ structure.
We extend the Marsden-Weinstein-Meyer symplectic reduction theorem to the setting of multisymplectic manifolds. In this context, we investigate the dependence of the reduced space on the reduction parameters. With respect to a distinguished class of multisymplectic moment maps, an exact stationary phase approximation and nonabelian localization theorem are also obtained.
This document is a reorganization of the results on the Master Thesis of the same title written by the author under the supervision of Dr. Christian Blohmann at the University of Bonn in 2014. There are three main results in this document. The first one is a construction of a high L-infinity algebra out of any Gerstenhaber algebra. The second one uses a cochain null-homotopy from the Chevalley-Eilenberg complex associated to a graded Lie algebra to any cochain complex D to induce (transfer) the L-infinity algebra structure from the Lie alegebra to Q(D), a resolution of D. Lastly, the third one…
Multisymplectic geometry admits an operation that has no counterpart in symplectic geometry, namely, taking the product of two multisymplectic manifolds endowed with the wedge product of the multisymplectic forms. We show that there is an L-infinity-embedding of the L-infinity-algebra of observables of the individual factors into the observables of the product, and that homotopy moment maps for the individual factors induce a homotopy moment map for the product. As a by-product, we associate to every multisymplectic form a curved L-infinity-algebra, whose curvature is the multisymplectic form …
Consider a closed non-degenerate 3-form $ω$ with an infinitesimal action of a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. Motivated by the fact that the observables associated to $ω$ form a Lie 2-algebra, we introduce homotopy moment maps defined on a Lie 2-algebra rather than just on the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. We formulate existence criteria and provide a construction for such homotopy moment maps, by characterizing them in terms of cohomology.
We introduce a notion of a homotopy momentum section on a Lie algebroid over a pre-multisymplectic manifold. A homotopy momentum section is a generalization of the momentum map with a Lie group action and the momentum section on a pre-symplectic manifold, and is also regarded as a generalization of the homotopy momentum map on a multisymplectic manifold. We show that a gauged nonlinear sigma model with Wess-Zumino term with Lie algebroid gauging has the homotopy momentum section structure.
We extend Noether's theorem to the setting of multisymplectic geometry by exhibiting a correspondence between conserved quantities and continuous symmetries on a multi-Hamiltonian system. We show that a homotopy co-momentum map interacts with this correspondence in a way analogous to the moment map in symplectic geometry. We apply our results to generalize the theory of the classical momentum and position functions from the phase space of a given physical system to the multisymplectic phase space. We also apply our results to manifolds with a torsion-free $G_2$ structure.
Given a vector field on a manifold M, we define a globally conserved quantity to be a differential form whose Lie derivative is exact. Integrals of conserved quantities over suitable submanifolds are constant under time evolution, the Kelvin circulation theorem being a well-known special case. More generally, conserved quantities are well-behaved under transgression to spaces of maps into M. We focus on the case of multisymplectic manifolds and Hamiltonian vector fields. We show that in the presence of a Lie group of symmetries admitting a homotopy co-momentum map, one obtains a whole family o…
We show a constrained Hamiltonian system and a gauged sigma model have a structure of a momentum section and a Hamiltonian Lie algebroid theory recently introduced by Blohmann and Weinstein. We propose a generalization of a momentum section on a pre-multisymplectic manifold by considering gauged sigma models on a higher dimensional manifold.
The convexity and Morse-theoretic properties of moment maps in symplectic geometry typically fail for presymplectic manifolds. We find a condition on presymplectic moment maps that prevents these failures. Our result applies for instance to Prato's quasifolds and to Hamiltonian actions on contact manifolds and cosymplectic manifolds.
We give a complete characterization of Hamiltonian actions of compact Lie groups on exact symplectic manifolds with proper momentum maps. We deduce that every Hamiltonian action of a compact Lie group on a contractible symplectic manifold with a proper momentum map is globally linearizable.
In this paper we show that the classical results on the existence and uniqueness of moment maps in symplectic geometry generalize directly to weak homotopy moment maps in multisym- plectic geometry. In particular, we show that their existence and uniqueness is governed by a Lie algebra cohomology complex which reduces to the Chevalley-Eilenberg complex in the symplectic setup
The Ricci form is a moment map for the action of the group of exact volume preserving diffeomorphisms on the space of almost complex structures. This observation yields a new approach to the Weil-Petersson symplectic form on the Teichmuller space of isotopy classes of complex structures with real first Chern class zero and nonempty Kahler cone.
The unimodality conjecture posed by Tolman in the conference `Moment maps in Various Geometry" in 2005 states that if (M,w) is a 2n-dimensional smooth compact symplectic manifold equipped with a Hamiltonian circle action with only isolated fixed points, then the sequence of Betti numbers is unimodal. Recently, the author and M. Kim proved that the unimodality holds in eight-dimensional cases by using equivariant cohomology theory. In this paper, we generalize the idea in \cite{CK} to an arbitrary dimensional case. Also, we prove the conjecture in arbitrary dimension with an assumption that a m…
The multisymplectic formalism of field theories developed by many mathematicians over the last fifty years is extended in this work to deal with manifolds that have boundaries. In particular, we develop a multisymplectic framework for first order covariant Hamiltonian field theories on manifolds with boundaries. This work is a geometric fulfillment of Fock's characterization of field theories as it appears in recent work by Cattaneo, Mnev and Reshetikhin [Ca14]. This framework leads to a true geometric understanding of conventional choices for boundary conditions. For example, the boundary con…
Connectivity properties of moment maps on based loop groups
We study the moment maps of a smooth projective toric variety. In particular, we characterize when the moment map coming from the quotient construction is equal to a weighted Fubini-Study moment map. This leads to an investigation into polytopes with strict linear precision, and in the process we use results from and find remarkable connections between Symplectic Geometry, Geometric Modeling, Algebraic Statistics, and Algebraic Geometry.
In this note, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the properness of moment maps for representations of quivers. We show that the moment map for the representations of a quiver is proper if and only if the quiver is acyclic, that is, it does not contain any oriented cycle.
We define an equivariant index of Spin$^c$-Dirac operators on possibly noncompact manifolds, acted on by compact, connected Lie groups. The main result in this paper is that the index decomposes into irreducible representations according to the quantisation commutes with reduction principle.
In this paper, we construct various examples of Lagrangian mean curvature flows in Calabi-Yau manifolds, using moment maps for actions of abelian Lie groups on them. The examples include Lagrangian self-shrinkers and translating solitons in the Euclidean spaces. Moreover, our method can be applied to construct examples of Lagrangian mean curvature flows in non-flat Calabi-Yau manifolds. In particular, we describe Lagrangian mean curvature flows in 4-dimensional Ricci-flat ALE spaces in detail and investigate their singularities.
These notes grew out of an expose on M. Gromov's paper "Convex sets and Kähler manifolds'' ("Advances in Differential Geometry and Topology,'' World Scientific, 1990) at the DMV-Seminar on "Combinatorical Convex Geometry and Toric Varieties'' in Blaubeuren in April `93. Gromov's paper deals with a proof of Alexandrov--Fenchel type inequalities and the Brunn--Minkowski inequality for finite dimensional compact convex sets and their variants for compact Kähler manifolds. The emphasis of these notes lies on basic details and the techniques from various mathematical areas involved in Gromov's argu…
In the present paper, we introduce the notion of pseudo-heaviness of closed subsets of closed symplectic manifolds and prove the existence of pseudo-heavy fibers of moment maps. In particular, we generalize Entov and Polterovich's theorem, which ensures the existence of non-displaceable fibers, and provide a partial answer to a problem posed by them, which asks the existence of heavy fibers. Moreover, we apply our results to prove that some generalized coupled angular momenta have more than two non-displaceable fibers.
The celebrated result by Biane-Bougerol-O'Connell relates Duistermaat-Heckman (DH) measures for coadjoint orbits of a compact Lie group $G$ with the multi-dimensional Pitman transform of the Wiener process on its Cartan subalgebra. The DH theory admits several non-trivial generalizations. In this paper, we consider the case of $G=SU(2)$, and we give an interpretation of DH measures for $SU(2) \cong S^3$ valued moment maps in terms of an interesting stochastic process on the unit disc, and an interpretation of the DH measures for Poisson $\mathbb{H}^3$ valued moment maps (in the sense of Lu) in…
