In this survey we describe a recently-developed technique for bounding the number (and controlling the typical structure) of finite objects with forbidden substructures. This technique exploits a subtle clustering phenomenon exhibited by the independent sets of uniform hypergraphs whose edges are sufficiently evenly distributed; more precisely, it provides a relatively small family of 'containers' for the independent sets, each of which contains few edges. We attempt to convey to the reader a general high-level overview of the method, focusing on a small number of illustrative applications in areas such as extremal graph theory, Ramsey theory, additive combinatorics, and discrete geometry, and avoiding technical details as much as possible.
We prove a new, efficient version of the hypergraph container theorems that is suited for hypergraphs with large uniformities. The main novelty is a refined approach to constructing containers that employs simple ideas from high-dimensional convex geometry. The existence of smaller families of containers for independent sets in such hypergraphs, which is guaranteed by the new theorem, allows us to improve upon the best currently known bounds for several problems in extremal graph theory, discrete geometry, and Ramsey theory.
A set of containers for a hypergraph G is a collection of vertex subsets, such that for every independent (or, indeed, merely sparse) set in G there is some subset in the collection which contains it. No set in the collection should be large and the collection itself should be relatively small. Containers with useful properties have been exhibited by Balogh, Morris and Samotij and by the authors, along with several applications. Our purpose here is to give a simpler algorithm than the one we used previously, which nevertheless yields containers with all the properties needed for our previous t…
We develop a notion of containment for independent sets in hypergraphs. For every $r$-uniform hypergraph $G$, we find a relatively small collection $C$ of vertex subsets, such that every independent set of $G$ is contained within a member of $C$, and no member of $C$ is large; the collection, which is in various respects optimal, reveals an underlying structure to the independent sets. The containers offer a straightforward and unified approach to many combinatorial questions concerned (usually implicitly) with independence. With regard to colouring, it follows that simple $r$-uniform hypergra…
Recently the breakthrough method of hypergraph containers, developed independently by Balogh, Morris, and Samotij as well as Saxton and Thomason, has been used to study sparse random analogs of a variety of classical problems from combinatorics and number theory. The previously known proofs of the containers theorem use the so-called scythe algorithm---an iterative procedure that runs through the vertices of the hypergraph. (Saxton and Thomason have also proposed an alternative, randomized construction in the case of simple hypergraphs.) Here we present the first known deterministic proof of t…
In breakthrough results, Saxton-Thomason and Balogh-Morris-Samotij developed powerful theories of hypergraph containers. In this paper, we explore some consequences of these theories. We use a simple container theorem of Saxton-Thomason and an entropy-based framework to deduce container and counting theorems for hereditary properties of k-colourings of very general objects, which include both vertex- and edge-colourings of general hypergraph sequences as special cases. In the case of sequences of complete graphs, we further derive characterisation and transference results for hereditary proper…
We present a general method to convert algorithms into faster algorithms for almost-regular input instances. Informally, an almost-regular input is an input in which the maximum degree is larger than the average degree by at most a constant factor. This family of inputs vastly generalizes several families of inputs for which we commonly have improved algorithms, including bounded-degree inputs and random inputs. It also generalizes families of inputs for which we don't usually have faster algorithms, including regular-inputs of arbitrarily high degree and very dense inputs. We apply our method…
Let $χ_l(G)$ denote the list chromatic number of the $r$-uniform hypergraph~$G$. Extending a result of Alon for graphs, Saxton and the second author used the method of containers to prove that, if $G$ is simple and $d$-regular, then $χ_l(G)\ge (1/(r-1)+o(1))\log_r d$. To see how close this inequality is to best possible, we examine $χ_l(G)$ when $G$ is a random $r$-partite hypergraph with $n$ vertices in each class. The value when $r=2$ was determined by Alon and Krivelevich, here we show that $χ_l(G)= (g(r,α)+o(1))\log_r d$ almost surely, where $d$ is the expected average degree of~$G$ and $α…
We use the hypergraph container theory of Balogh--Morris--Samotij and Saxton--Thomason to obtain general rectilinear approximations and volume estimates for sequences of bodies closed under certain families of projections. We give a number of applications of our results, including a multicolour generalisation of a theorem of Hatami, Janson and Szegedy on the entropy of graph limits. Finally, we raise a number of questions on geometric and analytic approaches to containers.
The $r$-uniform linear $k$-cycle $C^r_k$ is the $r$-uniform hypergraph on $k(r-1)$ vertices whose edges are sets of $r$ consecutive vertices in a cyclic ordering of the vertex set chosen in such a way that every pair of consecutive edges share exactly one vertex. Here, we prove a balanced supersaturation result for linear cycles which we then use in conjunction with the method of hypergraph containers to show that for any fixed pair of integers $r, k \ge 3$, the number of $C^r_k$-free $r$-uniform hypergraphs on $n$ vertices is $2^{Θ(n^{r-1})}$, thereby settling a conjecture due to Mubayi and W…
A hypergraph is a generalization of a graph where edges can connect any number of vertices. In this paper, we extend the study of locating-dominating sets to hypergraphs. Along with some basic results, sharp bounds for the location-domination number of hypergraphs in general and exact values with specified conditions are investigated. Moreover, locating-dominating sets in some specific hypergraphs are found.
Many important problems in combinatorics and other related areas can be phrased in the language of independent sets in hypergraphs. Recently Balogh, Morris and Samotij, and independently Saxton and Thomason developed very general container theorems for independent sets in hypergraphs; both of which have seen numerous applications to a wide range of problems. In this paper we use the container method to give relatively short and elementary proofs of a number of results concerning Ramsey (and Turán) properties of (hyper)graphs and the integers. In particular: (i) We generalise the random Ramsey …
A (simple) hypergraph is a family H of pairwise incomparable sets of a finite set. We say that a hypergraph H is a domination hypergraph if there is at least a graph G such that the collection of minimal dominating sets of G is equal to H. Given a hypergraph, we are interested in determining if it is a domination hypergraph and, if this is not the case, we want to find domination hypergraphs in some sense close to it, the domination completions. Here we will focus on the family of hypergraphs containing all the subsets with the same cardinality, the uniform hypergraphs of maximum size. Specifi…
The goal of this paper is to give a new, abstract approach to cover-decomposition and polychromatic colorings using hypergraphs on ordered vertex sets. We introduce an abstract version of a framework by Smorodinsky and Yuditsky, used for polychromatic coloring halfplanes, and apply it to so-called ABA-free hypergraphs, which are a generalization of interval graphs. Using our methods, we prove that (2k-1)-uniform ABA-free hypergraphs have a polychromatic k-coloring, a problem posed by the second author. We also prove the same for hypergraphs defined on a point set by pseudohalfplanes. These res…
We give a probabilistic construction of a $3$-uniform hypergraph on $N$ vertices with independence number $O(\log N / \log \log N)$ in which there are at most two edges among any four vertices. This bound is tight and solves a longstanding open problem of Erdős and Hajnal in Ramsey theory. We further extend this result to prove tight bounds on various other hypergraph Ramsey numbers.
Amongst $d$-regular $r$-uniform hypergraphs on $n$ vertices, which ones have the largest number of independent sets? While the analogous problem for graphs (originally raised by Granville) is now well-understood, it is not even clear what the correct general conjecture ought to be; our goal here is propose such a generalisation. Lending credence to our conjecture, we verify it within the class of `quasi-bipartite' hypergraphs (a generalisation of bipartite graphs that seems natural in this context) by adopting the entropic approach of Kahn.
In this paper, we consider a randomized greedy algorithm for independent sets in $r$-uniform $d$-regular hypergraphs $G$ on $n$ vertices with girth $g$. By analyzing the expected size of the independent sets generated by this algorithm, we show that $α(G)\geq (f(d,r)-ε(g,d,r))n$, where $ε(g,d,r)$ converges to $0$ as $g\rightarrow\infty$ for fixed $d$ and $r$, and $f(d,r)$ is determined by a differential equation. This extends earlier results of Gamarnik and Goldberg for graphs. We also prove that when applying this algorithm to uniform linear hypergraphs with bounded degree, the size of the in…
Zero forcing is an iterative coloring process on a graph that has been widely used in such different areas as the modelling of propagation phenomena in networks and the study of minimum rank problems in matrices and graphs. This paper deals with zero forcing on hypergraphs. (Representing a network by a hypergraph allows us to account for its community structure and for more general interactions between different subsets of nodes.) We consider two natural generalizations to hypergraphs of zero forcing on graphs (one of them already known) and, for each one of these generalizations we look into …
There has been interest recently in maximizing the number of independent sets in graphs. For example, the Kahn-Zhao theorem gives an upper bound on the number of independent sets in a $d$-regular graph. Similarly, it is a corollary of the Kruskal-Katona theorem that the lex graph has the maximum number of independent sets in a graph of fixed size and order. In this paper we solve two equivalent problems. The first is: what $3$-uniform hypergraph on a ground set of size $n$, having at least $t$ edges, has the most $2$-independent sets? Here a $2$--independent set is a subset of vertices contain…
The induced Ramsey number $r_{\mathrm{ind}}(F)$ of a $k$-uniform hypergraph $F$ is the smallest natural number $n$ for which there exists a $k$-uniform hypergraph $G$ on $n$ vertices such that every two-coloring of the edges of $G$ contains an induced monochromatic copy of $F$. We study this function, showing that $r_{\mathrm{ind}}(F)$ is bounded above by a reasonable power of $r(F)$. In particular, our result implies that $r_{\mathrm{ind}}(F) \leq 2^{2^{ct}}$ for any $3$-uniform hypergraph $F$ with $t$ vertices, mirroring the best known bound for the usual Ramsey number. The proof relies on a…
We study the problems of bounding the number weak and strong independent sets in $r$-uniform, $d$-regular, $n$-vertex linear hypergraphs with no cross-edges. In the case of weak independent sets, we provide an upper bound that is tight up to the first order term for all (fixed) $r\ge 3$, with $d$ and $n$ going to infinity. In the case of strong independent sets, for $r=3$, we provide an upper bound that is tight up to the second-order term, improving on a result of Ordentlich-Roth (2004). The tightness in the strong independent set case is established by an explicit construction of a $3$-unifo…
A central problem in extremal graph theory is to estimate, for a given graph $H$, the number of $H$-free graphs on a given set of $n$ vertices. In the case when $H$ is not bipartite, fairly precise estimates on this number are known. In particular, thirty years ago, Erdős, Frankl, and Rödl proved that there are $2^{(1+o(1))\text{ex}(n,H)}$ such graphs. In the bipartite case, however, nontrivial bounds have been proven only for relatively few special graphs $H$. We make a first attempt at addressing this enumeration problem for a general bipartite graph $H$. We show that an upper bound of $2^{O…
Let $Π_q$ be an arbitrary finite projective plane of order $q$. A subset $S$ of its points is called saturating if any point outside $S$ is collinear with a pair of points from $S$. Applying probabilistic tools we improve the upper bound on the smallest possible size of the saturating set to $\lceil\sqrt{3q\ln{q}}\rceil+ \lceil(\sqrt{q}+1)/2\rceil$. The same result is presented using an algorithmic approach as well, which points out the connection with the transversal number of uniform multiple intersecting hypergraphs.
In this paper, we consider an analog of the well-studied extremal problem for triangle-free subgraphs of graphs for uniform hypergraphs. A loose triangle is a hypergraph $T$ consisting of three edges $e,f$ and $g$ such that $|e \cap f| = |f \cap g| = |g \cap e| = 1$ and $e \cap f \cap g = \emptyset$. We prove that if $H$ is an $n$-vertex $r$-uniform hypergraph with maximum degree $\triangle$, then as $\triangle \rightarrow \infty$, the number of edges in a densest $T$-free subhypergraph of $H$ is at least \[ \frac{e(H)}{\triangle^{\frac{r-2}{r-1} + o(1)}}.\] For $r = 3$, this is tight up to th…
The well-known Erdős-Hajnal conjecture states that for any graph $F$, there exists $ε>0$ such that every $n$-vertex graph $G$ that contains no induced copy of $F$ has a homogeneous set of size at least $n^ε$. We consider a variant of the Erdős-Hajnal problem for hypergraphs where we forbid a family of hypergraphs described by their orders and sizes. For graphs, we observe that if we forbid induced subgraphs on $m$ vertices and $f$ edges for any positive $m$ and $0\leq f \leq \binom{m}{2}$, then we obtain large homogeneous sets. For triple systems, in the first nontrivial case $m=4$, for every …
There is interesting internal structure in the nullspaces of graph and hypergraph adjacency matrices, especially for trees, bipartite graphs, and related combinatorial classes. The zero loci of nullvectors, i.e., their zero coordinates' indices, encode information about matchings, coverings, and edges' influence on rank. This set system is the lattice of flats of a ``kernel matroid'', a subsystem of which are the ``stalled'' sets closed under skew zero forcing (SZF), a graph percolation/infection model known to have connections with rank and nullity. For a wide variety of graphs, the lattice o…
A well-known special case of a conjecture attributed to Ryser states that k-partite intersecting hypergraphs have transversals of at most k-1 vertices. An equivalent form was formulated by Gyárfás: if the edges of a complete graph K are colored with k colors then the vertex set of K can be covered by at most k-1 sets, each connected in some color. It turned out that the analogue of the conjecture for hypergraphs can be answered: Z. Király proved that in every k-coloring of the edges of the r-uniform complete hypergraph K^r (r >= 3), the vertex set of K^r can be covered by at most $\lceil k/r \…
For an odd integer $n=2d-1$, let $\mathcal{B}(n, d)$ be the subgraph of the hypercube $Q_n$ induced by the two largest layers. In this paper, we describe the typical structure of independent sets in $\mathcal{B}(n, d)$ and give precise asymptotics on the number of them. The proofs use Sapozhenko's graph container method and a recently developed method of Jenssen and Perkins, which combines Sapozhenko's graph container lemma with the cluster expansion for polymer models from statistical physics.
Kneser's 1955 conjecture -- proven by Lovász in 1978 -- asserts that in any partition of the $k$-subsets of $\{1, 2, \dots, n\}$ into $n-2k-3$ parts, one part contains two disjoint sets. Schrijver showed that one can restrict to significantly fewer $k$-sets and still observe the same intersection pattern. Alon, Frankl, and Lovász proved a different generalization of Kneser's conjecture for $r$ pairwise disjoint sets. Dolnikov generalized Lovász' result to arbitrary set systems, while Kříž did the same for the $r$-fold extension of Kneser's conjecture. Here we prove a common generalization of a…
In this paper we study hypergraphs definable in an algebraically closed field. Our goal is to show, in the spirit of the so-called transference principles in extremal combinatorics, that if a given algebraic hypergraph is "dense" in a certain sense, then a generic low-dimensional subset of its vertices induces a subhypergraph that is also "dense." (For technical reasons, we only consider low-dimensional subsets that are parameterized by rational functions.) Our proof approach is inspired by the hypergraph containers method, developed by Balogh, Morris, and Samotij and independently by Saxton a…

We provide new examples of the asymptotic counting for the number of subsets on groups of given size which are free of certain configurations. These examples include sets without solutions to equations in non-abelian groups, and linear configurations in abelian groups defined from group homomorphisms. The results are obtained by combining the methodology of hypergraph containers joint with arithmetic removal lemmas. As a consequence, random counterparts are presented as well.
By implementing algorithmic versions of Sapozhenko's graph container methods, we give new algorithms for approximating the number of independent sets in bipartite graphs. Our first algorithm applies to $d$-regular, bipartite graphs satisfying a weak expansion condition: when $d$ is constant, and the graph is a bipartite $Ω( \log^2 d/d)$-expander, we obtain an FPTAS for the number of independent sets. Previously such a result for $d>5$ was known only for graphs satisfying the much stronger expansion conditions of random bipartite graphs. The algorithm also applies to weighted independent sets: …
An oriented k-uniform hypergraph (a family of ordered k-sets) has the ordering property (or Property O) if for every linear order of the vertex set, there is some edge oriented consistently with the linear order. We find bounds on the minimum number of edges in a hypergraph with Property O.
The method of hypergraph containers, introduced recently by Balogh, Morris, and Samotij, and independently by Saxton and Thomason, has proved to be an extremely useful tool in the study of various monotone graph properties. In particular, a fairly straightforward application of this technique allows one to locate, for each non-bipartite graph $H$, the threshold at which the distribution of edges in a typical $H$-free graph with a given number of edges undergoes a transition from 'random-like' to 'structured'. On the other hand, for non-monotone hereditary graph properties the standard version …
In this paper we consider $j$-tuple-connected components in random $k$-uniform hypergraphs (the $j$-tuple-connectedness relation can be defined by letting two $j$-sets be connected if they lie in a common edge and consider the transitive closure; the case $j=1$ corresponds to the common notion of vertex-connectedness). We determine that the existence of a $j$-tuple-connected component containing $Θ(n^j)$ $j$-sets in random $k$-uniform hypergraphs undergoes a phase transition and show that the threshold occurs at edge probability $\tfrac{(k-j)!}{\binom{k}{j}-1}n^{j-k}$. Our proof extends the re…
