In this paper, we consider an analog of the well-studied extremal problem for triangle-free subgraphs of graphs for uniform hypergraphs. A loose triangle is a hypergraph $T$ consisting of three edges $e,f$ and $g$ such that $|e \cap f| = |f \cap g| = |g \cap e| = 1$ and $e \cap f \cap g = \emptyset$. We prove that if $H$ is an $n$-vertex $r$-uniform hypergraph with maximum degree $\triangle$, then as $\triangle \rightarrow \infty$, the number of edges in a densest $T$-free subhypergraph of $H$ is at least \[ \frac{e(H)}{\triangle^{\frac{r-2}{r-1} + o(1)}}.\] For $r = 3$, this is tight up to the $o(1)$ term in the exponent. We also show that if $H$ is a random $n$-vertex triple system with edge-probability $p$ such that $pn^3\rightarrow\infty$ as $n\rightarrow\infty$, then with high probability as $n \rightarrow \infty$, the number of edges in a densest $T$-free subhypergraph is \[ \min\Bigl\{(1-o(1))p{n\choose3},p^{\frac{1}{3}}n^{2-o(1)}\Bigr\}.\] We use the method of containers together with probabilistic methods and a connection to the extremal problem for arithmetic progressions of length three due to Ruzsa and Szemerédi.
Let $G$ be an $r$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices such that all but at most $\varepsilon \binom{n}{\ell}$ $\ell$-subsets of vertices have degree at least $p \binom{n-\ell}{r-\ell}$. We show that $G$ contains a large subgraph with high minimum $\ell$-degree.
We prove that for every integer $r\geq 2$, an $n$-vertex $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ containing no $r$-regular subgraphs has at most $(1+o(1)){{n-1}\choose{k-1}}$ edges if $k\geq r+1$ and $n$ is sufficiently large. Moreover, if $r\in\{3,4\}$, $r\mid k$ and $k,n$ are both sufficiently large, then the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $k$-uniform hypergraph containing no $r$-regular subgraphs is exactly ${{n-1} \choose {k-1}}$, with equality only if all edges contain a specific vertex $v$. We also ask some related questions.
We introduce a new approach and prove that the maximum number of triangles in a $C_5$-free graph on $n$ vertices is at most $$(1 + o(1)) \frac{1}{3 \sqrt 2} n^{3/2}.$$ We also show a connection to $r$-uniform hypergraphs without (Berge) cycles of length less than six, and estimate their maximum possible size.
Let $k\ge 3$ be an odd integer and let $n$ be a sufficiently large integer. We prove that the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $k$-uniform hypergraph containing no $2$-regular subgraphs is $\binom{n-1}{k-1} + \lfloor\frac{n-1}{k} \rfloor$, and the equality holds if and only if $H$ is a full $k$-star with center $v$ together with a maximal matching omitting $v$. This verifies a conjecture of Mubayi and Verstraëte.
Motzkin and Straus established a remarkable connection between the maximum clique and the Lagrangian of a graph in 1965. This connection and its extensions were successfully employed in optimization to provide heuristics for the maximum clique number in graphs. It is useful in practice if similar results hold for hypergraphs. In this paper, we provide upper bounds on the Lagrangian of a hypergraph containing dense subgraphs when the number of edges of the hypergraph is in certain ranges. These results support a pair of conjectures introduced by Y. Peng and C. Zhao (2012) and extend a result of…
We prove that the maximum number of edges in a 3-uniform linear hypergraph on $n$ vertices containing no 2-regular subhypergraph is $n^{1+o(1)}$. This resolves a conjecture of Dellamonica, Haxell, Luczak, Mubayi, Nagle, Person, Rödl, Schacht and Verstraëte. We use this result to show that the maximum number of edges in a $3$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices containing no immersion of a closed surface is $n^{2+o(1)}$. Furthermore, we present results on the maximum number of edges in $k$-uniform linear hypergraphs containing no $r$-regular subhypergraph.
A triangle in a hypergraph is a collection of distinct vertices u,v,w and distinct edges e,f,g with u,v \in e, v,w \in f, w,u \in g, and \{u,v,w\} \cap e \cap f \cap g=\emptyset. The i-degree of a vertex in a hypergraph is the number of edges of size i containing it. We prove that every triangle-free hypergraph of rank three (edges have size two or three) with maximum 3-degree Δ_3 and maximum 2-degree Δ_2 has list chromatic number at most c max{Δ_2/ log{Δ_2}}, (Δ_3 / log{Δ_3})^(1/2)} for some absolute positive constant c. This generalizes a result of Johansson and a result of Frieze and the se…
Compared to the classical binomial random (hyper)graph model, the study of random regular hypergraphs is made more challenging due to correlations between the occurrence of different edges. We develop an edge-switching technique for hypergraphs which allows us to show that these correlations are limited for a large range of densities. This extends some previous results of Kim, Sudakov and Vu for graphs. From our results we deduce several corollaries on subgraph counts in random $d$-regular hypergraphs. We also prove a conjecture of Dudek, Frieze, Ruciński and Šileikis on the threshold for the …
We improve the estimates of the subgraph probabilities in a random regular graph. Using the improved results, we further improve the limiting distribution of the number of triangles in random regular graphs.
The independence number $α(H)$ of a hypergraph $H$ is the maximum cardinality of a set of vertices of $H$ that does not contain an edge of $H$. Generalizing Shearer's classical lower bound on the independence number of triangle-free graphs (J. Comb. Theory, Ser. B 53 (1991) 300-307), and considerably improving recent results of Li and Zang (SIAM J. Discrete Math. 20 (2006) 96-104) and Chishti et al. (Acta Univ. Sapientiae, Informatica 6 (2014) 132-158), we show that $$α(H)\geq \sum_{u\in V(H)}f_r(d_H(u))$$ for an $r$-uniform linear triangle-free hypergraph $H$ with $r\geq 2$, where \begin{eqna…
We prove a decomposition theorem for the class of triangle-free graphs that do not contain a subdivision of the complete graph on four vertices as an induced subgraph. We prove that every graph of girth at least~5 in this class is 3-colorable.
A hypergraph $\mathcal{F}$ is non-trivial intersecting if every two edges in it have a nonempty intersection but no vertex is contained in all edges of $\mathcal{F}$. Mubayi and Verstraëte showed that for every $k \ge d+1 \ge 3$ and $n \ge (d+1)n/d$ every $k$-graph $\mathcal{H}$ on $n$ vertices without a non-trivial intersecting subgraph of size $d+1$ contains at most $\binom{n-1}{k-1}$ edges. They conjectured that the same conclusion holds for all $d \ge k \ge 4$ and sufficiently large $n$. We confirm their conjecture by proving a stronger statement. They also conjectured that for $m \ge 4$ a…
Consider the triangle-free graph process, which starts from the empty graph on $n$ vertices and a random ordering of the possible ${n \choose 2}$ edges; the edges are added in this ordering provided the graph remains triangle free. We will show that there exists a constant $c$ such that no copy of any fixed finite triangle-free graph on $k$ vertices with at least $ck$ edges asymptotically almost surely appears in the triangle-free graph process.
A graph $G$ is $(a,b)$-choosable if for any color list of size $a$ associated with each vertex, one can choose a subset of $b$ colors such that adjacent vertices are colored with disjoint color sets. This paper proves that for any integer $m\ge 1$, every finite triangle-free induced subgraph of the triangular lattice is $(5m,2m)$-choosable.
A hypergraph is "$d$-degenerate" if every subhypergraph has a vertex of degree at most $d$. A greedy algorithm colours every such hypergraph with at most $d+1$ colours. We show that this bound is tight, by constructing an $r$-uniform $d$-degenerate hypergraph with chromatic number $d+1$ for all $r\geq2$ and $d\geq1$. Moreover, the hypergraph is triangle-free, where a "triangle" in an $r$-uniform hypergraph consists of three edges whose union is a set of $r+1$ vertices.
Almost $50$ years ago Erdős and Purdy asked the following question: Given $n$ points in the plane, how many triangles can be approximate congruent to equilateral triangles? They pointed out that by dividing the points evenly into three small clusters built around the three vertices of a fixed equilateral triangle, one gets at least $\left\lfloor \frac{n}{3} \right\rfloor \cdot \left\lfloor \frac{n+1}{3} \right\rfloor \cdot \left\lfloor \frac{n+2}{3} \right\rfloor$ such approximate copies. In this paper we provide a matching upper bound and thereby answer their question. More generally, for eve…
Recently there has been much interest in studying random graph analogues of well known classical results in extremal graph theory. Here we follow this trend and investigate the structure of triangle-free subgraphs of $G(n,p)$ with high minimum degree. We prove that asymptotically almost surely each triangle-free spanning subgraph of $G(n,p)$ with minimum degree at least $\big(\frac{2}{5} + o(1)\big)pn$ is $\mathcal O(p^{-1}n)$-close to bipartite, and each spanning triangle-free subgraph of $G(n,p)$ with minimum degree at least $(\frac{1}{3}+\varepsilon)pn$ is $\mathcal O(p^{-1}n)$-close to $r$…
The problem of finding dense induced bipartite subgraphs in $H$-free graphs has a long history, and was posed 30 years ago by Erdős, Faudree, Pach and Spencer. In this paper, we obtain several results in this direction. First we prove that any $K_t$-free graph with minimum degree at least $d$ contains an induced bipartite subgraph of minimum degree at least $c_t \log d/\log \log d$, confirming (asymptotically) several conjectures by Esperet, Kang and Thomassé. Complementing this result, we further obtain optimal bounds for this problem in the case of dense triangle-free graphs, and we also ans…
Given a finite projective plane $Π$ and a polarity $θ$ of $Π$, the corresponding polarity graph is the graph whose vertices are the points of $Π$. Two distinct vertices $p$ and $p'$ are adjacent if $p$ is incident to $θ(p')$. Polarity graphs have been used in a variety of extremal problems, perhaps the most well-known being the Turán number of the cycle of length four. We investigate the problem of finding the maximum number of vertices in an induced triangle-free subgraph of a polarity graph. Mubayi and Williford showed that when $Π$ is the projective geometry $PG(2,q)$ and $θ$ is the orthogo…
In 2007 Matamala proved that if $G$ is a simple graph with maximum degree $Δ\geq 3$ not containing $K_{Δ+1}$ as a subgraph and $s, t$ are positive integers such that $s+t \geq Δ$, then the vertex set of $G$ admits a partition $(S,T)$ such that $G[S]$ is a maximum order $(s-1)$-degenerate subgraph of $G$ and $G[T]$ is a $(t-1)$-degenerate subgraph of $G$. This result extended earlier results obtained by Borodin, by Bollobás and Manvel, by Catlin, by Gerencsér and by Catlin and Lai. In this paper we prove a hypergraph version of this result and extend it to variable degeneracy and to partitions …
A hypergraph is called an r by r grid if it is isomorphic to a pattern of r horizontal and r vertical lines. Three sets form a triangle if they pairwise intersect in three distinct singletons. A hypergraph is linear if every pair of edges meet in at most one vertex. In this paper we construct large linear r-hypergraphs which contain no grids. Moreover, a similar construction gives large linear r-hypergraphs which contain neither grids nor triangles. For r at least 4 our constructions are almost optimal. These investigations are also motivated by coding theory: we get new bounds for optimal sup…
The coprime hypergraph of integers on $n$ vertices $CHI_k(n)$ is defined via vertex set $\{1,2,\dots,n\}$ and hyperedge set $\{\{v_1,v_2,\dots,v_{k+1}\}\subseteq\{1,2,\dots,n\}:\gcd(v_1,v_2,\dots,v_{k+1})=1\}$. In this article we present ideas on how to construct maximal subgraphs in $CHI_k(n)$. This continues the author's earlier work, which dealt with bounds on the size and structural properties of these subgraphs. We succeed in the cases $k\in\{1,2,3\}$ and give promising ideas for $k\geq 4$.
We prove that for every $n$, there is a graph $G$ with $χ(G) \geq n$ and $ω(G) \leq 3$ such that every induced subgraph $H$ of $G$ with $ω(H) \leq 2$ satisfies $χ(H) \leq 4$. This disproves a well-known conjecture. Our construction is a digraph with bounded clique number, large dichromatic number, and no induced directed cycles of odd length at least 5.
Let $\perp$ be a unitary polarity of a finite projective plane $π$ of order $q^2$. The unitary polarity graph is the graph with vertex set the points of $π$ where two vertices $x$ and $y$ are adjacent if $x \in y^\perp$. We show that a triangle-free induced subgraph of the unitary polarity graph of an arbitrary projective plane has at most $(q^4+q)/2$ vertices. When $π$ is the Desarguesian projective plane $\mathrm{PG}(2,q^2)$ and $q$ is even, we show that the upper bound is asymptotically sharp, by providing an example on $q^4/2$ vertices. Finally, the case when $π$ is the Figueroa plane is d…

Given a family of hypergraphs $\mathcal H$, let $f(m,\mathcal H)$ denote the largest size of an $\mathcal H$-free subgraph that one is guaranteed to find in every hypergraph with $m$ edges. This function was first introduced by Erdős and Komlós in 1969 in the context of union-free families, and various other special cases have been extensively studied since then. In an attempt to develop a general theory for these questions, we consider the following basic issue: which sequences of hypergraph families $\{\mathcal H_m\}$ have bounded $f(m,\mathcal H_m)$ as $m\to\infty$? A variety of bounds for …
Given two $k$-uniform hypergraphs $F$ and $G$, we say that $G$ has an $F$-covering if every vertex in $G$ is contained in a copy of $F$. For $1\le i \le k-1$, let $c_i(n,F)$ be the least integer such that every $n$-vertex $k$-uniform hypergraph $G$ with $δ_i(G)> c_i(n,F)$ has an $F$-covering. The covering problem has been systematically studied by Falgas-Ravry and Zhao [Codegree thresholds for covering 3-uniform hypergraphs, SIAM J. Discrete Math., 2016]. Last year, Falgas-Ravry, Markström, and Zhao [Triangle-degrees in graphs and tetrahedron coverings in 3-graphs, Combinatorics, Probability a…
We consider the triangle-free process: given an integer n, start by taking a uniformly random ordering of the edges of the complete n-vertex graph K_n. Then, traverse the ordered edges and add each traversed edge to an (initially empty) evolving graph - unless its addition creates a triangle. We study the evolving graph at around the time where Θ(n^{3/2 + ε}) edges have been traversed for any fixed ε\in (0,10^{-10}). At that time and for any fixed triangle-free graph F, we give an asymptotically tight estimation of the expected number of copies of F in the evolving graph. For F that is balance…
We describe a general approach of determining the distribution of spanning subgraphs in the random graph $\G(n,p)$. In particular, we determine the distribution of spanning subgraphs of certain given degree sequences, which is a generalisation of the $d$-factors, of spanning triangle-free subgraphs, of (directed) Hamilton cycles and of spanning subgraphs that are isomorphic to a collection of vertex disjoint (directed) triangles.
In a recent paper, Oliver Riordan shows that for $r \ge 4$ and $p$ up to and slightly larger than the threshold for a $K_r$-factor, the hypergraph formed by the copies of $K_r$ in $G(n,p)$ contains a copy of the binomial random hypergraph $H=H_r(n,π)$ with $π\sim p^{r \choose 2}$. For $r=3$, he gives a slightly weaker result where the density in the random hypergraph is reduced by a constant factor. Recently, Jeff Kahn announced an asymptotically sharp bound for the threshold in Shamir's hypergraph matching problem for all $r \ge 3$. With Riordan's result, this immediately implies an asymptoti…
Given a graph $G$, a Berge copy of $G$ is a hypergraph obtained by enlarging the edges arbitrarily. Gy\H ori in 2006 showed that for $r=3$ or $r=4$, an $r$-uniform $n$-vertex Berge triangle-free hypergraph has at most $\lfloor n^2/8(r-2)\rfloor$ hyperedges if $n$ is large enough, and this bound is sharp. The book graph $B_t$ consists of $t$ triangles sharing an edge. Very recently, Ghosh, Győri, Nagy-György, Paulos, Xiao and Zamora showed that a 3-uniform $n$-vertex Berge $B_t$-free hypergraph has at most $n^2/8+o(n^2)$ hyperedges if $n$ is large enough. They conjectured that this bound can be…
Let $α_{1} (G)$ denote the maximum size of an edge set that contains at most one edge from each triangle of $G$. Let $τ_{B} (G)$ denote the minimum size of an edge set whose deletion makes $G$ bipartite. It was conjectured by Lehel and independently by Puleo that $α_{1} (G) + τ_{B} (G) \le n^2/4$ for every $n$-vertex graph $G$. Puleo showed that $α_{1} (G) + τ_{B} (G) \le 5n^2/16$ for every $n$-vertex graph $G$. In this note, we improve the bound by showing that $α_{1} (G) + τ_{B} (G) \le 4403n^2/15000$ for every $n$-vertex graph $G$.
A result due to Gyárfás, Hubenko, and Solymosi (answering a question of Erdös) states that if a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices does not contain $K_{2,2}$ as an induced subgraph yet has at least $c\binom{n}{2}$ edges, then $G$ has a complete subgraph on at least $\frac{c^2}{10}n$ vertices. In this paper we suggest a "higher-dimensional" analogue of the notion of an induced $K_{2,2}$ which allows us to generalize their result to $k$-uniform hypergraphs. Our result also has an interesting consequence in discrete geometry. In particular, it implies that the fractional Helly theorem can be derived as a …
Fox--Grinshpun--Pach showed that every $3$-coloring of the complete graph on $n$ vertices without a rainbow triangle contains a clique of size $Ω\left(n^{1/3}\log^2 n\right)$ which uses at most two colors, and this bound is tight up to the constant factor. We show that if instead of looking for large cliques one only tries to find subgraphs of large chromatic number, one can do much better. We show that every such coloring contains a $2$-colored subgraph with chromatic number at least $n^{2/3}$, and this is best possible. We further show that for fixed positive integers $s,r$ with $s\leq r$, e…
A classical result in extremal graph theory is Mantel's Theorem, which states that every maximum triangle-free subgraph of $K_n$ is bipartite. A sparse version of Mantel's Theorem is that, for sufficiently large $p$, every maximum triangle-free subgraph of $G(n,p)$ is w.h.p. bipartite. Recently, DeMarco and Kahn proved this for $p > K \sqrt{\log n/n}$ for some constant $K$, and apart from the value of the constant this bound is best possible. We study an extremal problem of this type in random hypergraphs. Denote by $F_5$, which sometimes called as the generalized triangle, the 3-uniform hyper…
Given a family of $k$-hypergraphs $\mathcal{F}$, $ex(n,\mathcal{F})$ is the maximum number of edges a $k$-hypergraph can have, knowing that said hypergraph has $n$ vertices but contains no copy of any hypergraph from $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph. We prove that for every rational $r$ between $0$ and $k-1$, there exists some finite family $\mathcal{F}$ of $k$-hypergraphs for which $ex(n,\mathcal{F})=Θ(n^{k-r})$.
Gallai's colouring theorem states that if the edges of a complete graph are 3-coloured, with each colour class forming a connected (spanning) subgraph, then there is a triangle that has all 3 colours. What happens for more colours: if we $k$-colour the edges of the complete graph, with each colour class connected, how many of the $\binom{k}{3}$ triples of colours must appear as triangles? In this note we show that the `obvious' conjecture, namely that there are always at least $\binom{k-1}{2}$ triples, is not correct. We determine the minimum asymptotically. This answers a question of Johnson.…
A graph is $k$-degenerate if every subgraph has minimum degree at most $k$. We provide lower bounds on the size of a maximum induced 2-degenerate subgraph in a triangle-free planar graph. We denote the size of a maximum induced 2-degenerate subgraph of a graph $G$ by $α_2(G)$. We prove that if $G$ is a connected triangle-free planar graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges, then $α_2(G) \geq \frac{6n - m - 1}{5}$. By Euler's Formula, this implies $α_2(G) \geq \frac{4}{5}n$. We also prove that if $G$ is a triangle-free planar graph on $n$ vertices with at most $n_3$ vertices of degree at most thre…
For a subgraph $G$ of the blow-up of a graph $F$, we let $δ^*(G)$ be the smallest minimum degree over all of the bipartite subgraphs of $G$ induced by pairs of parts that correspond to edges of $F$. In [Triangle-factors in a balanced blown-up triangle. Discrete Mathematics, 2000], Johansson proved that if $G$ is a spanning subgraph of the blow-up of $C_3$ with parts of size $n$ and $δ^*(G) \ge \frac{2}{3}n + \sqrt{n}$, then $G$ contains $n$ vertex-disjoint triangles, and presented the following conjecture of Häggkvist: If $G$ is a spanning subgraph of the blow-up of $C_k$ with parts of size $n…
The triangle graph of a graph $G$, denoted by ${\cal T}(G)$, is the graph whose vertices represent the triangles ($K_3$ subgraphs) of $G$, and two vertices of ${\cal T}(G)$ are adjacent if and only if the corresponding triangles share an edge. In this paper, we characterize graphs whose triangle graph is a cycle and then extend the result to obtain a characterization of $C_n$-free triangle graphs. As a consequence, we give a forbidden subgraph characterization of graphs $G$ for which ${\cal T}(G)$ is a tree, a chordal graph, or a perfect graph. For the class of graphs whose triangle graph is p…
