For an odd integer $n=2d-1$, let $\mathcal{B}(n, d)$ be the subgraph of the hypercube $Q_n$ induced by the two largest layers. In this paper, we describe the typical structure of independent sets in $\mathcal{B}(n, d)$ and give precise asymptotics on the number of them. The proofs use Sapozhenko's graph container method and a recently developed method of Jenssen and Perkins, which combines Sapozhenko's graph container lemma with the cluster expansion for polymer models from statistical physics.
We prove a "supersaturation-type" extension of both Sperner's Theorem (1928) and its generalization by Erdos (1945) to k-chains. Our result implies that a largest family whose size is x more than the size of a largest k-chain free family and that contains the minimum number of k-chains is the family formed by taking the middle (k-1) rows of the Boolean lattice and x elements from the k-th middle row. We prove our result using the symmetric chain decomposition method of de Bruijn, van Ebbenhorst Tengbergen, and Kruyswijk (1951).
We prove upper and lower bounds on the local dimension of any pair of layers of the Boolean lattice, and show that the local dimension of the first and middle layers of the $n$-dimensional Boolean lattice is asymptotically $\frac{n}{\log_2 n}$ as $n\to\infty$. Previously, all that was known was a lower bound of $Ω(n/\log n)$ and an upper bound of $n$. Improving a result of Kim, Martin, Masařík, Shull, Smith, Uzzell, and Wang, we also prove that that the maximum local dimension of an $n$-element poset is at least $\left(\frac{1}{4}-o(1)\right)\frac{n}{\log_2 n}$.
The vectorial nonlinearity of a vector valued function is its distance from the set of affine functions. In 2017, Liu, Mesnager and Chen conjectured a general upper bound for the vectorial linearity. Recently, Carlet proved a lower bound in terms of the differential uniformity. In this paper, we improve Carlet's lower bound. Our method is elementary, it relies on the fact that the level sets of an APN functions are Sidon sets. We give a survey on Sidon sets in elementary abelian 2-groups. We study the completeness problem of Sidon sets obtained from hyperbolas and ellipses of the finite affine…
The finite-degree Zariski (Z-) closure is a classical algebraic object, that has found a key place in several applications of the polynomial method in combinatorics. In this work, we characterize the finite-degree Z-closures of a subclass of symmetric sets (subsets that are invariant under permutations of coordinates) of the Boolean cube, in positive characteristic. Our results subsume multiple statements on finite-degree Z-closures that have found applications in extremal combinatorial problems, for instance, pertaining to set systems (Hegedűs, Stud. Sci. Math. Hung. 2010; Hegedűs, arXiv 2021…
Alon and Füredi (European J. Combin., 1993) proved that any family of hyperplanes that covers every point of the Boolean cube $\{0,1\}^n$ except one must contain at least $n$ hyperplanes. We obtain two extensions of this result, in characteristic zero, for hyperplane covers of symmetric sets of the Boolean cube (subsets that are closed under permutations of coordinates), as well as for `polynomial covers' of `weight-determined' sets of `strictly unimodal uniform' (SU$^2$) grids. As a main tool for solving our problems, we give a combinatorial characterization of (finite-degree) Zariski (Z-) cl…
We present a refinement of Ramsey numbers by considering graphs with a partial ordering on their vertices. This is a natural extension of the ordered Ramsey numbers. We formalize situations in which we can use arbitrary families of partially-ordered sets to form host graphs for Ramsey problems. We explore connections to well studied Turán-type problems in partially-ordered sets, particularly those in the Boolean lattice. We find a strong difference between Ramsey numbers on the Boolean lattice and ordered Ramsey numbers when the partial ordering on the graphs have large antichains.
We prove that the largest $Q_2$-free family of subsets of $[n]$ which contains sets of at most three different sizes has at most $(3 + 2\sqrt {3})N/3 + o(N) \approx 2.1547N + o(N)$ members, where $N = {n \choose {\lfloor n/2 \rfloor}}$. This improves an earlier bound of $2.207N + o(N)$ by Axenovich, Manske, and Martin.
Let $2^{[n]}$ denote the power set of $[n]:=\{1,2,..., n\}$. A collection $\B\subset 2^{[n]}$ forms a $d$-dimensional {\em Boolean algebra} if there exist pairwise disjoint sets $X_0, X_1,..., X_d \subseteq [n]$, all non-empty with perhaps the exception of $X_0$, so that $\B={X_0\cup \bigcup_{i\in I} X_i\colon I\subseteq [d]}$. Let $b(n,d)$ be the maximum cardinality of a family $\F\subset 2^X$ that does not contain a $d$-dimensional Boolean algebra. Gunderson, Rödl, and Sidorenko proved that $b(n,d) \leq c_d n^{-1/2^d} \cdot 2^n$ where $c_d= 10^d 2^{-2^{1-d}}d^{d-2^{-d}}$. In this paper, we u…
We propose a new latent Boolean feature model for complex networks that captures different types of node interactions and network communities. The model is based on a new concept in graph theory, termed the Boolean intersection representation of a graph, which generalizes the notion of an intersection representation. We mostly focus on one form of Boolean intersection, termed cointersection, and describe how to use this representation to deduce node feature sets and their communities. We derive several general bounds on the minimum number of features used in cointersection representations and …
We investigate Boolean degree 1 functions for several classical association schemes, including Johnson graphs, Grassmann graphs, graphs from polar spaces, and bilinear forms graphs, as well as some other domains such as multislices (Young subgroups of the symmetric group). In some settings, Boolean degree 1 functions are also known as \textit{completely regular strength 0 codes of covering radius 1}, \textit{Cameron--Liebler line classes}, and \textit{tight sets}. We classify all Boolean degree $1$ functions on the multislice. On the Grassmann scheme $J_q(n, k)$ we show that all Boolean degree…

We investigate the existence of Boolean degree $d$ functions on the Grassmann graph of $k$-spaces in the vector space $\mathbb{F}_q^n$. For $d=1$ several non-existence and classification results are known, and no non-trivial examples are known for $n \geq 5$. This paper focusses on providing a list of examples on the case $d=2$ in general dimension and in particular for $(n, k)=(6,3)$ and $(n,k) = (8, 4)$. We also discuss connections to the analysis of Boolean functions, regular sets/equitable bipartitions/perfect 2-colorings in graphs, $q$-analogs of designs, and permutation groups. In partic…
We derive a spectral interpretation of the pivot operation on a graph and generalise this operation to hypergraphs. We establish lower bounds on the number of flat spectra of a Boolean function, depending on internal structures, with respect to the {I,H}^n and {I,H,N}^n sets of transforms. We also construct a family of Boolean functions of degree higher than two with a large number of flat spectra with respect to {I,H}^n, and compute a lower bound on this number. The relationship between pivot orbits and equivalence classes of error-correcting codes is then highlighted. Finally, an enumeration…
In convex integer programming, various procedures have been developed to strengthen convex relaxations of sets of integer points. On the one hand, there exist several general-purpose methods that strengthen relaxations without specific knowledge of the set $ S $, such as popular linear programming or semi-definite programming hierarchies. On the other hand, various methods have been designed for obtaining strengthened relaxations for very specific sets that arise in combinatorial optimization. We propose a new efficient method that interpolates between these two approaches. Our procedure stren…
Proofs of sharp phase transition and noise sensitivity in percolation have been significantly simplified by the use of randomized algorithms, via the OSSS inequality (proved by O'Donnell, Saks, Schramm and Servedio (2005)) and the Schramm-Steif inequality for the Fourier-Walsh coefficients of functions defined on the Boolean hypercube. In this article, we prove intrinsic versions of the OSSS and Schramm-Steif inequalities for functionals of a general Poisson process, and apply these new estimates to deduce sufficient conditions - expressed in terms of randomized stopping sets - yielding sharp …
