We introduce the notion of Johnson pseudo-Connes amenability for dual Banach algebras. We study the relation between this new notion with the various notions of Connes amenability like Connes amenability, approximate Connes amenability and pseudo Connes amenability. We also investigate some hereditary properties of this new notion. We prove that for a locally compact group $G$, $M(G)$ is Johnson pseudo-Connes amenable if and only if $G$ is amenable. Also we show that for every non-empty set $I$, $\mathbb{M}_I(\mathbb{C})$ under this new notion is forced to have a finite index. Finally, we provide some examples of certain dual Banach algebras and we study their Johnson pseudo-Connes amenability.
Given Banach algebras $ A $ and $ B $ with $ θ\inΔ(B) $. We shall study the Johnson pseudo-contractibility and pseudo-amenability of $ θ$-Lau product $ A\times_θ B $. We show that if $ A\times_θ B $ is Johnson pseudo-contractible, then $ A $ is Johnson pseudo-contractible and has a bounded approximate identity and $ B $ is Johnson pseudo-contractible. In some particular cases complete characterization of Johnson pseudo-contractibility of $ A\times_θ B $ are given. Also, we show that pseudo-amenability of $ A\times_θ B $ implies approximate amenability of $ A $ and pseudo-amenability of $ B $.
Let A be a Banach algebra and I be a closed ideal of A. We say that A is amenable relative to I, if A/I is an amenable Banach algebra. We study the relative amenability of Banach algebras and investigate the relative amenability of triangular Banach algebras and Banach algebras associated to locally compact groups. We generalize some of the previous known results by applying the concept of relative amenability of Banach algebras, especially, we present a generalization of Johnson's theorem in the concept of relative amenability.
In this paper, we countinue our work in \cite{11}. We show that $L^{1}(G,w)$ is $ϕ_{0}$-biprojective if and only if $G$ is compact, where $ϕ_{0}$ is the augmentation character. We introduce the notions of character Johnson amenability and character Johnson contractibility for Banach algebras. We show that $\ell^{1}(S)$ is pseudo-amenable if and only if $\ell^{1}(S)$ is character Johnson-amenable, provided that $S$ is a uniformly locally finite band semigroup. We give some conditions whether $ϕ$-biprojectivity ($ϕ$-biflatness) of $\ell^{1}(S)$ implies the finiteness (amenability) of $S$, respec…
We extend the concept of amenability of a Banach algebra $A$ to the case that there is an extra $\mathfrak A$-module structure on $A$, and show that when $S$ is an inverse semigroup with subsemigroup $E$ of idempotents, then $A=\ell^1(S)$ as a Banach module over $\mathfrak A=\ell^1(E)$ is module amenable iff $S$ is amenable. When $S$ is a discrete group, $\ell^1(E)=\mathbb C$ and this is just the celebrated Johnson's theorem.
We introduce a notion of a topologically flat locally convex module, which extends the notion of a flat Banach module and which is well adapted to the nonmetrizable setting (and especially to the setting of DF-modules). By using this notion, we introduce topologically amenable locally convex algebras and we show that a complete barrelled DF-algebra is topologically amenable if and only if it is Johnson amenable, extending thereby Helemskii-Sheinberg's criterion for Banach algebras. As an application, we completely characterize topologically amenable Köthe co-echelon algebras.
Let $E$ be a Banach space, and $\mathcal B(E)$ the algebra of all bounded linear operators on $E$. The question of amenability of $\mathcal B(E)$ goes back to Johnson's seminal memoir \cite{johnson} from 1972. We present the first general criteria applying to very wide classes of Banach spaces, given in terms of the Banach space geometry of $E$, which imply that $\mathcal B(E)$ is non-amenable. We cover all spaces for which this is known so far (with the exception of one particular example), with much shorter proofs, such as $\ell_p$ for $p \in [1, \infty]$ and $c_0$, but also many new spaces:…
We show that the tensor product of approximately amenable algebras need not be approximately amenable, and investigate conditions under which $A$ and $B$ being approximately amenable implies, or is implied by, $A\hat{\otimes}B$ or $A^{\#}\hat{\otimes} B^{\#}$ being approximately amenable. Our methods also enable us to prove that if $A\hat{\otimes}B$ is amenable, then so are $A$ and $B$, a result proved by Barry Johnson in 1996 under an additional assumption.
In this paper, we introduce a new notion of amenability, $σ-$Connes ideal, say, for a large class of dual Banach algebras. We extend the concept of ideal Connes amenability and study their properties. Let $σ$ be a $weak^{*}$-continuous endomorphism on a dual Banach algebra $\mathcal{A}$ with dense range. Then the concept of ideal Connes-amenability and $σ-$ ideally Connes amenability are the same. We gave some general results and hereditary properties with some examples for this new notion of amenability.
Using techniques of non-abelian harmonic analysis, we construct an explicit, non-zero cyclic derivation on the Fourier algebra of the real $ax+b$ group. In particular this provides the first proof that this algebra is not weakly amenable. Using the structure theory of Lie groups, we deduce that the Fourier algebras of connected, semisimple Lie groups also support non-zero, cyclic derivations and are likewise not weakly amenable. Our results complement earlier work of Johnson (JLMS, 1994), Plymen (unpublished note) and Forrest--Samei--Spronk (IUMJ 2009). As an additional illustration of our tec…
We introduce the notions of approximate Connes-amenability and approximate strong Connes-amenability for dual Banach algebras. Then we characterize these two types of algebras in terms of approximate normal virtual diagonals and approximate $σWC-$virtual diagonals. We investigate these properties for von Neumann algebras and measure algebras of locally compact groups. In particular we show that a von Neumann algebra is approximately Connes-amenable if and only if it has an approximate normal virtual diagonal. This is the ``approximate'' analog of the main result of Effros in [E. G. Effros, Ame…
We shall develop two notions of pointwise amenability, namely pointwise Connes amenability and pointwise $w^*$-approximate Connes amenability, for dual Banach algebras which take the $w^*$-topology into account. We shall study these concepts for the Banach sequence algebras $\ell^1(ω)$ and the weighted semigroup algebras $ \ell^{1}(\mathbb{N}_{\wedge},ω)$. For a weight $ω$ on a discrete semigroup $S$, we shall investigate pointwise amenability/Connes amenability of $\ell^1(S,ω)$ in terms of diagonals.
It is shown that various definitions of $φ$-Connes amenability as introduced independently in \cite{Gh-Ja, mah, Sh-Am}, are just rediscovering existing notions and presenting them in different ways. It is also proved that even $φ$-contractibility as defined in \cite{Sangani}, is equivalent to an older and simpler concept.
Associated with two Banach algebras $\mathcal A$ and $\mathcal B$ and a norm decreasing homomorphism $T:{\mathcal B}\rightarrow{\mathcal A}$, there is a certain Banach algebra product ${\mathcal A}\times_T {\mathcal B}$, which is a splitting extension of $\mathcal B$ by $\mathcal A$. We investigate some notions of amenability such as approximate weak amenability, approximate cyclic amenability, ideal amenability, approximate Connes-amenability, Pseudo-Connes amenability, $w^*$-approximate Connes-amenability, essential amenability, essential $ϕ$-amenability and essential character amenability. …
Let $G$ be a locally compact group, and let $B(G)$ denote its Fourier--Stieltjes algebra. We show that $B(G)$ is Connes-amenable if and only if $G$ is almost abelian.
In this paper we study the Connes amenability of the second dual of Arens regular Banach algebras. Of course we provide a partial answer to the question posed by Volker Runde. Also we fined the necessary and sufficient conditions for the second dual of an Arens regular module extension Banach algebra to be Connes amenable when the module is reflexive.

We shall develop a notion of amenability for dual Banach algebras, namely weak Connes amenability, which will play the role that weak amenability does for usual Banach algebras
In this paper, we introduce the new notion of strong pseudo-Connes amenability for dual Banach algebras. We study the relation between this new notion to the various notions of Connes amenability. Also we show that for every non-empty set $I$, $M_I(\mathbb{C})$ is strong pseudo-Connes amenable if and only if $I$ is finite. We provide some examples of certain dual Banach algebras and we study its strong pseudo-Connes amenability. In the last section, we investigate the property ultra central approximate identity for a Banach algebra $\mathcal{A}$ and its second dual $\mathcal{A}^{**}$. Also we …
In this paper, we study the notion of Connes amenability for a class of $I\times{I}$-upper triangular matrix algebra $UP(I,\mathcal{A})$, where $\mathcal{A}$ is a dual Banach algebra with a non-zero $wk^\ast$-continuous character and $I$ is a totally ordered set. For this purpose, we characterize the $ϕ$-Connes amenability of a dual Banach algebra $\mathcal{A}$ through the existence of a specified net in $\mathcal{A}\hat{\otimes}\mathcal{A}$, where $ϕ$ is a non-zero $wk^\ast$-continuous character. Using this, we show that $UP(I,\mathcal{A})$ is Connes amenable if and only if $I$ is singleton a…
In this paper, we introduce a notion of approximate Connes-biprojectivity for dual Banach algebras. We study the relation between approximate Connes-biprojectivity, Johnson pseudo-Connes amenability and $φ$-Connes amenability. We propose a criterion to show that some certain dual triangular Banach algebras are not approximately Connes-biprojective. Next we show that for a locally compact group $G$, the Banach algebra $M(G)$ is approximately Connes-biprojective if and only if $G$ is amenable. Finally for an infinite commutative compact group $G$ we show that the Banach algebra $L^2(G)$ with con…
For a Banach algebra $ \mathcal{A} $, we introduce various approximate virtual diagonals such as approximate WAP-virtual diagonal and approximate virtual diagonal. For the enveloping dual Banach algebra $ F(\mathcal{A}) $ of $ \mathcal{A} $, we show that $ F(\mathcal{A}) $ is approximately Connes-amenable if and only if $ \mathcal{A} $ has an approximate WAP-virtual diagonal. Further, for a discrete group $ G $, we show that if the group algebra $ \ell^1(G) $ has an approximate WAP-virtual diagonal, then it has an approximate virtual diagonal.
The aim of this work is to generalize Johnson's techniques in order to apply them to establish a bijective correspondence between $S$-derivations and continuous derivations on $M_a(S,ω),$ where $S$ is a locally compact foundation semigroup with identity $e$, and $ω$ is a weight function on $S$, and apply it to find a necessary condition for amenability of weighted group algebras.
In 1972, the late B. E. Johnson introduced the notion of an amenable Banach algebra and asked whether the Banach algebra $B(E)$ of all bounded linear operators on a Banach space $E$ could ever be amenable if $\dim E = \infty$. Somewhat surprisingly, this question was answered positively only very recently as a by-product of the Argyros--Haydon result that solves the "scalar plus compact problem": there is an infinite-dimensional Banach space $E$, the dual of which is $\ell^1$, such that $B(E) = K(E)+ \mathbb{C} \id_E$. Still, $B(\ell^2)$ is not amenable, and in the past decade, $ B(\ell^p)$ wa…
Let $L^1_\om(G)$ be a Beurling algebra on a locally compact abelian group $G$. We look for general conditions on the weight which allows the vanishing of continuous derivations of $L^1_\om(G)$. This leads us to introducing vector-valued Beurling algebras and considering the translation of operators on them. This is then used to connect the augmentation ideal to the behavior of derivation space. We apply these results to give examples of various classes of Beurling algebras which are weakly amenable, 2-weakly amenable or fail to be even 2-weakly amenable.
This is an expository note on non-amenabilty of the Banach algebra B(\ell_p) for p=1,2. These were proved respectively by Connes (p=2) and Read (p=1) via very different methods. We give a single proof which reproves both.
In this paper, we study weak amenability of Beurling algebras. To this end, we introduce the notion inner quasi-additive functions and prove that for a locally compact group $G$, the Banach algebra $L^1(G, ω)$ is weakly amenable if and only if every non-inner quasi-additive function in $L^\infty(G, 1/ω)$ is unbounded. This provides an answer to the question concerning weak amenability of $L^1(G, ω)$ and improve some known results in connection with it.
A special case of a conjecture raised by Forrest and Runde (Math. Zeit., 2005) asserts that the Fourier algebra of every non-abelian connected Lie group fails to be weakly amenable; this was aleady known to hold in the non-abelian compact cases, by earlier work of Johnson (JLMS, 1994) and Plymen (unpublished note). In recent work (JFA, 2014) the present authors verified this conjecture for the real ax+b group and hence, by structure theory, for any semisimple Lie group. In this paper we verify the conjecture for all 1-connected, non-abelian nilpotent Lie groups, by reducing the problem to the …
If $D:A \to X$ is a derivation from a Banach algebra to a contractive, Banach $A$-bimodule, then one can equip $X^{**}$ with an $A^{**}$-bimodule structure, such that the second transpose $D^{**}: A^{**} \to X^{**}$ is again a derivation. We prove an analogous extension result, where $A^{**}$ is replaced by $\F(A)$, the \emph{enveloping dual Banach algebra} of $A$, and $X^{**}$ by an appropriate kind of universal, enveloping, normal dual bimodule of $X$. Using this, we obtain some new characterizations of Connes-amenability of $\F(A)$. In particular we show that $\F(A)$ is Connes-amenable if a…
Let G be a locally compact group, and ZL1(G) be the centre of its group algebra. We show that when $G$ is compact ZL1(G) is not amenable when G is either nonabelian and connected, or is a product of infinitely many finite nonabelian groups. We also, study, for some non-compact groups G, some conditions which imply amenability and hyper-Tauberian property, for ZL1(G).
We give for a compact group G, a full characterisation of when its Fourier algebra A(G) is weakly amenable: when the connected component of the identity G_e is abelian. This condition is also equivalent to the hyper-Tauberian property for A(G), and to having the anti-diagonal D^v={(s,s^{-1}):s is in G} being a set of spectral synthesis for A(GXG). We show the relationship between amenability and weak amenability of A(G), and (operator) amenability and (operator) weak amenability of A_D(G), an algebra defined by the authors in arXiv:0705.4277. We close by extending our results to some classes o…
We let the central Fourier algebra, ZA(G), be the subalgebra of functions u in the Fourier algebra A(G) of a compact group, for which u(xyx^{-1})=u(y) for all x,y in G. We show that this algebra admits bounded point derivations whenever G contains a non-abelian closed connected subgroup. Conversely when G is virtually abelian, then ZA(G) is amenable. Furthermore, for virtually abelian G, we establish which closed ideals admit bounded approximate identities. We also show that if ZA(G) is weakly amenable, even hyper-Tauberian, exactly when G admits no non-abelian connected subgroup. We also stud…
We prove that the following are equivalent for a locally compact group $G$: (i) $G$ is amenable; (ii) $M(G)$ is Connes-amenable; (iii) $M(G)$ has a normal, virtual diagonal.
Let $A$ be a dual Banach algebra with predual $A_\ast$ and consider the following assertions: (A) $A$ is Connes-amenable; (B) $A$ has a normal, virtual diagonal; (C) $A_\ast$ is an injective $A$-bimodule. For general $A$, all that is known is that (B) implies (A) whereas, for von Neumann algebras, (A), (B), and (C) are equivalent. We show that (C) always implies (B) whereas the converse is false for $A = M(G)$ where $G$ is an infinite, locally compact group. Furthermore, we present partial solutions towards a characterization of (A) and (B) for $B(G)$ in terms of $G$: For amenable, discrete $G…
We introduce the class of Beurling-Fourier algebras on locally compact groups and show that they are non-commutative analogs of classical Beurling algebras. We obtain various results with regard to the operator amenability, operator weak amenability and Arens regularity of Beurling-Fourier algebras on compact groups and show that they behave very similarly to the classical Beurling algebras of discrete groups. We then apply our results to study explicitly the Beurling-Fourier algebras on SU(2), the 2 $\times$ 2 unitary group. We demonstrate that how Beurling-Fourier algebras are closely connec…
We define a Banach algebra A to be dual if $A = (A_\ast)^\ast$ for a closed submodule $A_\ast$ of $A^\ast$. The class of dual Banach algebras includes all $W^\ast$-algebras, but also all algebras M(G) for locally compact groups G, all algebras L(E) for reflexive Banach spaces E, as well as all biduals of Arens regular Banach algebras. The general impression is that amenable, dual Banach algebras are rather the exception than the rule. We confirm this impression. We first show that under certain conditions an amenable dual Banach algebra is already super-amenable and thus finite-dimensional. We…
We investigate the notion of Connes-amenability for dual Banach algebras, as introduced by Runde, for bidual algebras and weighted semigroup algebras. We provide some simplifications to the notion of a $σWC$-virtual diagonal, as introduced by Runde, especially in the case of the bidual of an Arens regular Banach algebra. We apply these results to discrete, weighted, weakly cancellative semigroup algebras, showing that these behave in the same way as C$^*$-algebras with regards Connes-amenability of the bidual algebra. We also show that for each one of these cancellative semigroup algebras $l^1…
The notion of operator amenability was introduced by Z.-J. Ruan in 1995. He showed that a locally compact group G is amenable if and only if its Fourier algebra A(G) is operator amenable. In this paper, we investigate the operator amenability of the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra B(G) and of the reduced Fourier-Stieltjes algebra B_r(G). The natural conjecture is that any of these algebras is operator amenable if and only if G is compact. We partially prove this conjecture with mere operator amenability replaced by operator C-amenability for some constant C < 5. In the process, we obtain a new decom…
In this paper, we introduce a new notion of biprojectivity, called $WAP$-biprojectivity for $F(\mathcal{A})$, the enveloping dual Banach algebra associated to a Banach algebra $\mathcal{A}$. We find some relations between Connes biprojectivity, Connes amenability and this new notion. We show that, for a given dual Banach algebra $\mathcal{A}$, if $F(\mathcal{A})$ is Connes amenable, then $\mathcal{A}$ is Connes amenable. For an infinite commutative compact group $G$, we show that the convolution Banach algebra $F(L^2(G))$ is not $WAP$-biprojective. Finally, we provide some examples of the enve…
We consider the Fourier-Stietljes algebra B(G) of a locally compact group G. We show that operator amenablility of B(G) implies that a certain semitolpological compactification of G admits only finitely many idempotents. In the case that G is connected, we show that operator amenability of B(G) entails that $G$ is compact.
We give a survey of the known connections between regularity conditions and amenability conditions in the setting of uniform algebras. For a uniform algebra $A$ we consider the set, $A_{lc}$, of functions in $A$ which are locally constant on a (varying) dense open subset of the character space of $A$. We show that, for a separable uniform algebra $A$, if $A$ has bounded relative units at every point of a dense subset of the character space of $A$, then $A_{lc}$ is dense in $A$. We construct a separable, essential, regular uniform algebra $A$ on its character space $X$ such that every point of …
We show that for a connected Lie group $G$, its Fourier algebra $A(G)$ is weakly amenable only if $G$ is abelian. Our main new idea is to show that weak amenability of $A(G)$ implies that the anti-diagonal, $\checkΔ_G=\{(g,g^{-1}):g\in G\}$, is a set of local synthesis for $A(G\times G)$. We then show that this cannot happen if $G$ is non-abelian. We conclude for a locally compact group $G$, that $A(G)$ can be weakly amenable only if it contains no closed connected non-abelian Lie subgroups. In particular, for a Lie group $G$, $A(G)$ is weakly amenable if and only if its connected component of…
Let $X$ be a left introverted subspace of dual of a Banach algebra. We study $Z_t(X^*),$ the topological center of Banach algebra $X^*$. We fined the topological center of $(X\cA)^*$, when $\cA$ has a bounded right approximate identity and $\cA\subseteq X^*.$ So we introduce a new notation of amenability for a dual Banach algebra $\cal A$. A dual Banach algebra $\cal A$ is weakly Connes-amenable if the first $weak^*-$continuous cohomology group of $\cal A$ with coefficients in $\cal A$ is zero; i.e., $H^1_{w^*}(\cal A, \cal A)=\{o\}$. We study the weak Connes-amenability of some dual Banach al…
In his study of amenable unitary representations, M. E. B. Bekka asked if there is an analogue for such representations of the remarkable fixed-point property for amenable groups. In this paper, we prove such a fixed-point theorem in the more general context of a $G$-amenable von Neumann algebra $M$, where $G$ is a locally compact group acting on $M$. The Følner conditions of Connes and Bekka are extended to the case where $M$ is semifinite and admits a faithful, semifinite, normal trace which is invariant under the action of $G$.
In this paper, we introduce a new notion of biprojectivity, called Connes-biprojective, for dual Banach algebras. We study the relation between this new notion to Connes-amenability and we show that, for a given dual Banach algebra $ \mathcal{A} $, it is Connes-amenable if and only if $ \mathcal{A} $ is Connes-biprojective and has a bounded approximate identity. Also, for an Arens regular Banach algebra $ \mathcal{A} $, we show that if $ \mathcal{A} $ is biprojective, then the dual Banach algebra $ \mathcal{A} ^{**} $ is Connes-biprojective.
In this note we study two related questions. (1) For a compact group G, what are the ranges of the convolution maps on A(GXG) given for u,v in A(G) by $u X v |-> u*v' ($v'(s)=v(s^{-1})$) and $u X v |-> u*v$? (2) For a locally compact group G and a compact subgroup K, what are the amenability properties of the Fourier algebra of the coset space A(G/K)? The algebra A(G/K) was defined and studied by the first named author. In answering the first question, we obtain for compact groups which do not admit an abelian subgroup of finite index, some new subalgebras of A(G). Using those algebras we can …
The purpose of this article is to connect the notion of the amenability of a discrete group with a new form of structural Ramsey theory. The Ramsey theoretic reformulation of amenability constitutes a considerable weakening of the Folner criterion. As a by-product, it will be shown that in any non amenable group G, there is a subset E of G such that no finitely additive probability measure on G measures all translates of E equally.
We define the notion of self-tracial stability for tracial von Neumann algebras and show that a tracial von Neumann algebra satisfying the Connes Embedding Problem is self-tracially stable if and only if it is amenable. We then generalize a result of Jung by showing that a separable tracial von Neumann algebra that satisfies the Connes Embedding Problem is amenable if and only if any two embeddings into $R^\mathcal{U}$ are ucp-conjugate. Moreover we show that for a II$_1$ factor $N$ satisfying CEP, the space $\mathbb{H}$om$(N, \prod_{k\to \mathcal{U}}M_k)$ of unitary equivalence classes of emb…
In this paper we define the module extension dual Banach algebras and we use this Banach algebras to finding the relationship between $weak^*-$continuous homomorphisms of dual Banach algebras and Connes-amenability. So we study the $weak^*-$continuous derivations on module extension dual Banach algebras.
Let $G$ be a compact group. For $1\leq p\leq\infty$ we introduce a class of Banach function algebras $\mathrm{A}^p(G)$ on $G$ which are the Fourier algebras in the case $p=1$, and for $p=2$ are certain algebras discovered in \cite{forrestss1}. In the case $p\not=2$ we find that $\mathrm{A}^p(G)\cong \mathrm{A}^p(H)$ if and only if $G$ and $H$ are isomorphic compact groups. These algebras admit natural operator space structures, and also weighted versions, which we call $p$-Beurling-Fourier algebras. We study various amenability and operator amenability properties, Arens regularity and represen…
Let $B$ be a Banach $A-bimodule$ and let $n\geq 0$. We investigate the relationships between some cohomological groups of $A$, that is, if the topological center of the left module action $π_\ell:A\times B\rightarrow B$ of $A^{(2n)}$ on $B^{(2n)}$ is $B^{(2n)}$ and $H^1(A^{(2n+2)},B^{(2n+2)})=0$, then we have $H^1(A,B^{(2n)})=0$, and we find the relationships between cohomological groups such as $H^1(A,B^{(n+2)})$ and $H^1(A,B^{(n)})$, spacial $H^1(A,B^*)$ and $H^1(A,B^{(2n+1)})$. We obtain some results in Connes-amenability of Banach algebras, and so for every compact group $G$, we conclude t…
Johnson and Schechtman (2009) characterized superreflexivity in terms of finite diamond graphs. The present author characterized the Radon-Nikodým property (RNP) for dual spaces in terms of the infinite diamond. This paper is devoted to further study of relations between metric characterizations of superreflexivity and the RNP for dual spaces. The main result is that finite subsets of any set $M$ whose embeddability characterizes the RNP for dual spaces, characterize superreflexivity. It is also observed that the converse statement does not hold, and that $M=\ell_2$ is a counterexample.
We study representations of Banach algebras on reflexive Banach spaces. Algebras which admit such representations which are bounded below seem to be a good generalisation of Arens regular Banach algebras; this class includes dual Banach algebras as defined by Runde, but also all group algebras, and all discrete (weakly cancellative) semigroup algebras. Such algebras also behave in a similar way to C$^*$- and W$^*$-algebras; we show that interpolation space techniques can be used in the place of GNS type arguments. We define a notion of injectivity for dual Banach algebras, and show that this i…
