The notion of operator amenability was introduced by Z.-J. Ruan in 1995. He showed that a locally compact group G is amenable if and only if its Fourier algebra A(G) is operator amenable. In this paper, we investigate the operator amenability of the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra B(G) and of the reduced Fourier-Stieltjes algebra B_r(G). The natural conjecture is that any of these algebras is operator amenable if and only if G is compact. We partially prove this conjecture with mere operator amenability replaced by operator C-amenability for some constant C < 5. In the process, we obtain a new decomposition of B(G), which can be interpreted as the non-commutative counterpart of the decomposition of M(G) into the discrete and the continuous measures. We further introduce a variant of operator amenability - called operator Connes-amenability - which also takes the dual space structure on B(G) and B_r(G) into account. We show that B_r(G) is operator Connes-amenable if and only if G is amenable. Surprisingly, B(F_2) is operator Connes-amenable although F_2, the free group in two generators, fails to be amenable.
We consider the Fourier-Stietljes algebra B(G) of a locally compact group G. We show that operator amenablility of B(G) implies that a certain semitolpological compactification of G admits only finitely many idempotents. In the case that G is connected, we show that operator amenability of B(G) entails that $G$ is compact.
We give an example of a non-compact, locally compact group $G$ such that its Fourier-Stieltjes algebra $B(G)$ is operator amenable. Furthermore, we characterize those $G$ for which $A^*(G)$ - the spine of $B(G)$ as introduced by M. Ilie and the second named author - is operator amenable and show that $A^*(G)$ is operator weakly amenable for each $G$.
Let G be a locally compact group, and let A(G) and B(G) denote its Fourier and Fourier-Stieltjes algebras. These algebras are dual objects of the group and measure algebras, L^1(G) and M(G), in a sense which generalizes the Pontryagin duality theorem on abelian groups. We wish to consider the amenability properties of A(G) and B(G) and compare them to such properties for L^1(G) and M(G). For us, ``amenability properties'' refers to amenability, weak amenability, and biflatness, as well as some properties which are more suited to special settings, such as the hyper-Tauberian property for semisi…
Let $G$ be a locally compact group, and let $B(G)$ denote its Fourier--Stieltjes algebra. We show that $B(G)$ is Connes-amenable if and only if $G$ is almost abelian.
Let $G$ be a locally compact group. We show that its Fourier algebra $A(G)$ is amenable if and only if $G$ has an abelian subgroup of finite index, and that its Fourier-Stieltjes algebra $B(G)$ is amenable if and only if $G$ has a compact, abelian subgroup of finite index. We then show that $A(G)$ is weakly amenable if the component of the identity of $G$ is abelian, and we prove some partial results towards the converse.
We continue our study of the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra associated to a twisted (unital, discrete) C*-dynamical system and discuss how the various notions of equivalence of such systems are reflected at the algebra-level. As an application, we show that the amenability of a system, as defined in our previous work, is preserved under Morita equivalence.
Let $G$ be a locally compact group and $1\leq p<\infty$. A continuous unitary representation $π\!: G\to B(\mathcal{H})$ of $G$ is an $L^p$-representation if the matrix coefficient functions $s\mapsto \langle π(s)x,x\rangle$ lie in $L^p(G)$ for sufficiently many $x\in \mathcal{H}$. Brannan and Ruan defined the $L^p$-Fourier algebra $A_{L^p}(G)$ to be the set of matrix coefficient functions of $L^p$-representations. Similarly, the $L^p$-Fourier-Stieltjes algebra $B_{L^p}(G)$ is defined to be the weak*-closure of $A_{L^p}(G)$ in the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra $B(G)$. These are always ideals in the…
In analogy with the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra of a group, we associate to a unital discrete twisted C*-dynamical system a Banach algebra whose elements are coefficients of equivariants representations of the system. Building upon our previous work, we show that this Fourier-Stieltjes algebra embeds continuously in the Banach algebra of completely bounded multipliers of the (reduced or full) C*-crossed product of the system. We also introduce a notion of positive definiteness and prove a Gelfand-Raikov type theorem allowing us to describe the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra of a system in a more intr…
In this paper we start studying spectral properties of the Fourier-Stieltjes algebras, largely following Zafran's work on the algebra of measures on a locally compact group. We show that for a large class of discrete groups the Wiener-Pitt phenomenon occurs, i.e. the spectrum of an element of the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra is not captured by its range. We also investigate the notions of absolute continuity and mutual singularity in this setting; non-commutativity forces upon us two distinct versions of support of an element, indicating a crucial difference between this setup and the realm of Ab…
We study the closed algebra B_I(G) generated by the idempotents in the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra of a locally compact group G. We show that it is a regular Banach algebra with computable spectrum G^I, which we call the idempotent compactification of G. For any locally compact groups G and H, we show that B_I(G) is completely isometrically isomorphic to B_I(H) exactly when G/G_e= H/H_e, where G_e and H_e are the connected components of the identities. We compute some examples to illustrate out results.
The Fourier-Stieltjes and Fourier algebras B(G), A(G) for a general locally compact group G, first studied by P. Eymard, have played an important role in harmonic analysis and in the study of operator algebras generated by G. Recently, there has been interest in developing versions of these algebras for locally compact groupoids, justification being that, just as in the group case, the algebras should play a useful role in the study of groupoid operator algebras. Versions of these algebras for the locally compact groupoid case appear in three related theories: (1) a measured groupoid theory (J…
This paper concerns the study of regular Fourier hypergroups through multipliers of their associated Fourier algebras. We establish hypergroup analogues of well-known characterizations of group amenability, introduce a notion of weak amenability for hypergroups, and show that every discrete commutative hypergroup is weakly amenable with constant 1. Using similar techniques, we provide a sufficient condition for amenability of hypergroup Fourier algebras, which, as an immediate application, answers one direction of a conjecture of Azimifard--Samei--Spronk [J. Funct. Anal. 256(5) 1544-1564, 2009…
We show that for a connected Lie group $G$, its Fourier algebra $A(G)$ is weakly amenable only if $G$ is abelian. Our main new idea is to show that weak amenability of $A(G)$ implies that the anti-diagonal, $\checkΔ_G=\{(g,g^{-1}):g\in G\}$, is a set of local synthesis for $A(G\times G)$. We then show that this cannot happen if $G$ is non-abelian. We conclude for a locally compact group $G$, that $A(G)$ can be weakly amenable only if it contains no closed connected non-abelian Lie subgroups. In particular, for a Lie group $G$, $A(G)$ is weakly amenable if and only if its connected component of…
Every homomorphism $φ: B(G) \rightarrow B(H)$ between Fourier-Stieltjes algebras on locally compact groups $G$ and $H$ is determined by a continuous mapping $α: Y \rightarrow Δ(B(G))$, where $Y$ is a set in the open coset ring of $H$ and $Δ(B(G))$ is the Gelfand spectrum of $B(G)$ (a $*$-semigroup). We exhibit a large collection of maps $α$ for which $φ=j_α: B(G) \rightarrow B(H)$ is a completely positive/completely contractive/completely bounded homomorphism and establish converse statements in several instances. For example, we fully characterize all completely positive/completely contractiv…
We define the spine A*(G) of the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra B(G) of a locally compact group G. A*(G) is graded over a certain semi-lattice, that of non-quotient locally precompact topologies on G. We compute the spine's spectrum G*, which admits a semi-group structure. We discuss homomorphisms from A*(G) to B(H) where H is another locally compact group; and we show that A*(G) contains the image of every completely bounded homomorphism from the Fourier algebra A(H) of any amenable group H. We also show that A*(G) contains all of the idempotents in B(G). Finally, we compute examples for vector gr…
For a locally compact abelian group $G$, J. L. Taylor (1971) gave a complete characterization of invertible elements in the measure algebra $M(G)$. Using the Fourier-Stieltjes transform, this characterization can be carried out in the context of Fourier-Stieltjes algebras $B(G)$. We obtain this latter characterization for the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra $B(G)$ of certain classes of locally compact groups, in particular, many totally minimal groups and the $ax+b$-group.
In this paper we study the inversion problem in measure and Fourier-Stieltjes algebras from qualitative and quantitative point of view extending the results obtained by N. Nikolski.
Let $G$ be a locally compact group, and let $A_\cb(G)$ denote the closure of $A(G)$, the Fourier algebra of $G$, in the space of completely bounded multipliers of $A(G)$. If $G$ is a weakly amenable, discrete group such that $\cstar(G)$ is residually finite-dimensional, we show that $A_\cb(G)$ is operator amenable. In particular, $A_\cb(F_2)$ is operator amenable even though $F_2$, the free group in two generators, is not an amenable group. Moreover, we show that, if $G$ is a discrete group such that $A_\cb(G)$ is operator amenable, a closed ideal of $A(G)$ is weakly completely complemented in…
We introduce the class of Beurling-Fourier algebras on locally compact groups and show that they are non-commutative analogs of classical Beurling algebras. We obtain various results with regard to the operator amenability, operator weak amenability and Arens regularity of Beurling-Fourier algebras on compact groups and show that they behave very similarly to the classical Beurling algebras of discrete groups. We then apply our results to study explicitly the Beurling-Fourier algebras on SU(2), the 2 $\times$ 2 unitary group. We demonstrate that how Beurling-Fourier algebras are closely connec…
In this short note we first extend the validity of the spectral radius formula obtained in \cite{ag} to Fourier--Stieltjes algebras. The second part is devoted to showing that for the measure algebra on any locally compact non-discrete Abelian group there are no non-trivial constraints between three quantities: the norm, the spectral radius and the supremum of the Fourier--Stieltjes transform even if we restrict our attention to measures with all convolution powers singular with respect to Haar measure.
For a locally compact group $G$, let $A(G)$ denote its Fourier algebra and $\hat{G}$ its dual object, i.e. the collection of equivalence classes of unitary represenations of $G$. We show that the amenability constant of $A(G)$ is less than or equal to $\sup \{°(π) : π\in \hat{G} \}$ and that it is equal to one if and only if $G$ is abelian.
This work addresses an extension of Fourier-Stieltjes transform of a vector measure defined on compact groups to locally compact groups, by using a group representation induced by a representation of one of its compact subgroups.
We give for a compact group G, a full characterisation of when its Fourier algebra A(G) is weakly amenable: when the connected component of the identity G_e is abelian. This condition is also equivalent to the hyper-Tauberian property for A(G), and to having the anti-diagonal D^v={(s,s^{-1}):s is in G} being a set of spectral synthesis for A(GXG). We show the relationship between amenability and weak amenability of A(G), and (operator) amenability and (operator) weak amenability of A_D(G), an algebra defined by the authors in arXiv:0705.4277. We close by extending our results to some classes o…
In this paper, some known results will be generalized. Firstly, the idempotent theorem on the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra will be promoted and linked to the $p$-analog of such an algebra. Next, the $p$-analog of the $π$-Fourier space introduced by Arsac will be given, and by taking advantage of the theory of ultra filters, the connection between the dual space of the algebra of $p$-pseudofunctions and the $p$-analog of the $π$-Fourier space, will be fully investigated. As the main result, one of the significant and applicable functorial properties of the $p$-analog of the Fourier-Stieltjes algeb…
In this paper one of the possible $p$-operator space structures of the $p$-analog of the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra will be introduced, and to some extend will be studied. This special sort of operator structure will be given from the predual of this Fourier type algebra, that is the algebra of universal $p$-pseudofunctions. Furthermore, some applicable and expected results will be proven. Current paper can be considered as a new gate into the collection of problems around the $p$-analog of the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra, in the $p$-operator space structure point of view.
We construct examples of uncountable compact subsets of complex numbers with the property that any Borel measure on the circle group taking values of its Fourier coefficients from this set has natural spectrum. For measures with Fourier coefficients tending to 0 we construct tho open set with this property.
Amenability of any of the algebras described in the title is known to force them to be finite-dimensional. The analogous problems for \emph{approximate} amenability have been open for some years now. In this article we give a complete solution for the first two classes, using a new criterion for showing that certain Banach algebras without bounded approximate identities cannot be approximately amenable. The method also provides a unified approach to existing non-approximate amenability results, and is applied to the study of certain commutative Segal algebras. Using different techniques, we pr…
In this work we extend the Fourier-Stieltjes transform of a vector measure and a continuous function defined on compact groups to locally compact groups. To do so, we consider a representation L of a normal compact subgroup K of a locally compact group G, and we use a representation of G induced by that of L. Then, we define the Fourier-Stieltjes transform of a vector measure and that of a continuous function with compact support defined on G from the representation of G. Then, we extend the Shur orthogonality relation established for compact groups to locally compact groups by using the repre…
We consider amenability constants of the central Fourier algebra $ZA(G)$ of a finite group $G$. This is a dual object to $ZL^1(G)$ in the sense of hypergroup algebras, and as such shares similar amenability theory. We will provide several classes of groups where $AM(ZA(G)) = AM(ZL^1(G))$, and discuss $AM(ZA(G))$ when $G$ has two conjugacy class sizes. We also produce a new counterexample that shows that unlike $AM(ZL^1(G))$, $AM(ZA(G))$ does not respect quotient groups, however the class of groups that does has $\frac{7}{4}$ as the sharp amenability constant bound.
We let the central Fourier algebra, ZA(G), be the subalgebra of functions u in the Fourier algebra A(G) of a compact group, for which u(xyx^{-1})=u(y) for all x,y in G. We show that this algebra admits bounded point derivations whenever G contains a non-abelian closed connected subgroup. Conversely when G is virtually abelian, then ZA(G) is amenable. Furthermore, for virtually abelian G, we establish which closed ideals admit bounded approximate identities. We also show that if ZA(G) is weakly amenable, even hyper-Tauberian, exactly when G admits no non-abelian connected subgroup. We also stud…
Let $G$ be a compact group. For $1\leq p\leq\infty$ we introduce a class of Banach function algebras $\mathrm{A}^p(G)$ on $G$ which are the Fourier algebras in the case $p=1$, and for $p=2$ are certain algebras discovered in \cite{forrestss1}. In the case $p\not=2$ we find that $\mathrm{A}^p(G)\cong \mathrm{A}^p(H)$ if and only if $G$ and $H$ are isomorphic compact groups. These algebras admit natural operator space structures, and also weighted versions, which we call $p$-Beurling-Fourier algebras. We study various amenability and operator amenability properties, Arens regularity and represen…
In this paper, we follow two main goals. In the first attempt, we give some functorial properties of the $p$-analog of the Fourier-Stieltjes algebras in which we generalize some previously existed definitions and theorems in Arsac and Cowling's works, to utilize them to prove $p$-complete boundedness of some well-known maps on these algebras. In the second part, as an application of these generalizations, we prove $p$-completely boundedness of homomorphisms which are induced by continuous and proper piecewise affine maps that is a generalization of Ilie's work on Figà-Talamanca-Herz algebras.
Rajchman measures of locally compact Abelian groups are studied for almost a century now, and they play an important role in the study of trigonometric series. Eymard's influential work allowed generalizing these measures to the case of \emph{non-Abelian} locally compact groups $G$. The Rajchman algebra of $G$, which we denote by $B_0(G)$, is the set of all elements of the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra that vanish at infinity. In the present article, we characterize the locally compact groups that have amenable Rajchman algebras. We show that $B_0(G)$ is amenable if and only if $G$ is compact and …
Motivated by the beautiful work of M. A. Rieffel (1965) and of M. E. Walter (1974), we obtain characterisations of the Fourier algebra $A(G)$ of a locally compact group $G$ in terms of the class of $F$-algebras (i.e. a Banach algebra $A$ such that its dual $A'$ is a $W^*$-algebra whose identity is multiplicative on $A$). For example, we show that the Fourier algebras are precisely those commutative semisimple $F$-algebras that are Tauberian, contain a nonzero real element, and possess a dual semigroup that acts transitively on their spectrums. Our characterisations fall into three flavours, wh…
Using techniques of non-abelian harmonic analysis, we construct an explicit, non-zero cyclic derivation on the Fourier algebra of the real $ax+b$ group. In particular this provides the first proof that this algebra is not weakly amenable. Using the structure theory of Lie groups, we deduce that the Fourier algebras of connected, semisimple Lie groups also support non-zero, cyclic derivations and are likewise not weakly amenable. Our results complement earlier work of Johnson (JLMS, 1994), Plymen (unpublished note) and Forrest--Samei--Spronk (IUMJ 2009). As an additional illustration of our tec…
We study the existence of multiplier (completely) bounded approximate identities for the Fourier algebras of some classes of hypergroups. In particular we show that, a large class of commutative hypergroups are weakly amenable with the Cowling-Haagerup constant 1. As a corollary, we answer an open question of Eymard on Jacobi hypergroups. We also characterize the existence of bounded approximate identities for the hypergroup Fourier algebras of ultraspherical hypergroups.
We investigate generalized amenability and biflatness properties of various (operator) Segal algebras in both the group algebra, L1(G), and the Fourier algebra, A(G), of a locally compact group, G.
For locally compact groups G and H let A(G) denote the Fourier algebra of G and B(H) the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra of H. Any continuous piecewise affine map alpha:Y -> G (where Y is an element of the open coset ring of H) induces a completely bounded homomorphism Phi_alpha:A(G) -> B(H) by setting Phi_alpha u(.)=u(alpha(.)) on Y and Phi_alpha u=0 off of Y. We show that if G is amenable then any completely bounded homomorphism Phi:A(G) -> B(H) is of this form; and this theorem fails if G contains a discrete nonabelian free group. Our result generalises results of P.J. Cohen, B. Host and of the f…
Let ${\mathcal L} A(H)$ be the Lebesgue-Fourier space of a hypergroup $H$ considered as a Banach space on $H$. In addition ${\mathcal L}A(H)$ is a Banach algebra with the multiplication inherited from $L^1(H)$. Moreover If $H$ is a regular Fourier hypergroup, ${\mathcal L}A(H)$ is a Banach algebra with pointwise multiplication. We study the amenability and character amenability of these two Banach algebras.
Building on our previous work, we study the non-relative homology of quantum group convolution algebras. Our main result establishes the equivalence of amenability of a locally compact quantum group $\mathbb{G}$ and 1-injectivity of $L^{\infty}(\widehat{\mathbb{G}})$ as an operator $L^1(\widehat{\mathbb{G}})$-module. In particular, a locally compact group $G$ is amenable if and only if its group von Neumann algebra $VN(G)$ is 1-injective as an operator module over the Fourier algebra $A(G)$. As an application, we provide a decomposability result for completely bounded $L^1(\widehat{\mathbb{G}}…
By using structural and asymptotic properties of the Kontorovich-Lebedev transform associated with Minkowski's question mark function, we give an affirmative answer to the question posed by R. Salem (Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., 53 (3), (1943), p. 439) whether its Fourier-Stieltjes transform vanishes at infinity. This paper is substituted with a correct alternative and affirmative solution of Salem's problem and its generalization for derivatives of any order of the Fourier-Stieltjes transform of the Minkowski'i question mark function. The question is finally solved.
For a locally compact group $G$ and $p \in (1,\infty)$, we define $B_p(G)$ to be the space of all coefficient functions of isometric representations of $G$ on quotients of subspaces of $L_p$ spaces. For $p =2$, this is the usual Fourier--Stieltjes algebra. We show that $B_p(G)$ is a commutative Banach algebra that contractively (isometrically, if $G$ is amenable) contains the Figà-Talamanca--Herz algebra $A_p(G)$. If $2 \leq q \leq p$ or $p \leq q \leq 2$, we have a contractive inclusion $B_q(G) \subset B_p(G)$. We also show that $B_p(G)$ embeds contractively into the multiplier algebra of $A_…
In this note we study two related questions. (1) For a compact group G, what are the ranges of the convolution maps on A(GXG) given for u,v in A(G) by $u X v |-> u*v' ($v'(s)=v(s^{-1})$) and $u X v |-> u*v$? (2) For a locally compact group G and a compact subgroup K, what are the amenability properties of the Fourier algebra of the coset space A(G/K)? The algebra A(G/K) was defined and studied by the first named author. In answering the first question, we obtain for compact groups which do not admit an abelian subgroup of finite index, some new subalgebras of A(G). Using those algebras we can …
In this paper we will study the homological properties of various natural modules associated to the Fourier algebra of a locally compact group. In particular, we will focus on the question of identifying when such modules will be projective in the category of operator spaces. We will show that projectivity often implies that the underlying group is discrete and give evidence to show that amenability also plays an important role.
