We show that if a locally compact group $G$ is non-abelian then the amenability constant of its Fourier algebra is $\geq 3/2$, extending a result of Johnson (JLMS, 1994) who proved that this holds for finite non-abelian groups. Our lower bound, which is known to be best possible, improves on results by previous authors and answers a question raised by Runde (PAMS, 2006).
To do this we study a minorant for the amenability constant, related to the anti-diagonal in $G\times G$, which was implicitly used in Runde's work but hitherto not studied in depth. Our main novelty is an explicit formula for this minorant when $G$ is a countable virtually abelian group, in terms of the Plancherel measure for $G$. As further applications, we characterize those non-abelian groups where the minorant attains its minimal value, and present some examples to support the conjecture that the minorant always coincides with the amenability constant.
We consider amenability constants of the central Fourier algebra $ZA(G)$ of a finite group $G$. This is a dual object to $ZL^1(G)$ in the sense of hypergroup algebras, and as such shares similar amenability theory. We will provide several classes of groups where $AM(ZA(G)) = AM(ZL^1(G))$, and discuss $AM(ZA(G))$ when $G$ has two conjugacy class sizes. We also produce a new counterexample that shows that unlike $AM(ZL^1(G))$, $AM(ZA(G))$ does not respect quotient groups, however the class of groups that does has $\frac{7}{4}$ as the sharp amenability constant bound.
We introduce the class of Beurling-Fourier algebras on locally compact groups and show that they are non-commutative analogs of classical Beurling algebras. We obtain various results with regard to the operator amenability, operator weak amenability and Arens regularity of Beurling-Fourier algebras on compact groups and show that they behave very similarly to the classical Beurling algebras of discrete groups. We then apply our results to study explicitly the Beurling-Fourier algebras on SU(2), the 2 $\times$ 2 unitary group. We demonstrate that how Beurling-Fourier algebras are closely connec…
Let $G$ be a locally compact group, and let $B(G)$ denote its Fourier--Stieltjes algebra. We show that $B(G)$ is Connes-amenable if and only if $G$ is almost abelian.
Let $G$ be a locally compact group. We show that its Fourier algebra $A(G)$ is amenable if and only if $G$ has an abelian subgroup of finite index, and that its Fourier-Stieltjes algebra $B(G)$ is amenable if and only if $G$ has a compact, abelian subgroup of finite index. We then show that $A(G)$ is weakly amenable if the component of the identity of $G$ is abelian, and we prove some partial results towards the converse.
For a locally compact group $G$, let $A(G)$ denote its Fourier algebra and $\hat{G}$ its dual object, i.e. the collection of equivalence classes of unitary represenations of $G$. We show that the amenability constant of $A(G)$ is less than or equal to $\sup \{°(π) : π\in \hat{G} \}$ and that it is equal to one if and only if $G$ is abelian.
We give for a compact group G, a full characterisation of when its Fourier algebra A(G) is weakly amenable: when the connected component of the identity G_e is abelian. This condition is also equivalent to the hyper-Tauberian property for A(G), and to having the anti-diagonal D^v={(s,s^{-1}):s is in G} being a set of spectral synthesis for A(GXG). We show the relationship between amenability and weak amenability of A(G), and (operator) amenability and (operator) weak amenability of A_D(G), an algebra defined by the authors in arXiv:0705.4277. We close by extending our results to some classes o…
Let G be a locally compact group, and let A(G) and B(G) denote its Fourier and Fourier-Stieltjes algebras. These algebras are dual objects of the group and measure algebras, L^1(G) and M(G), in a sense which generalizes the Pontryagin duality theorem on abelian groups. We wish to consider the amenability properties of A(G) and B(G) and compare them to such properties for L^1(G) and M(G). For us, ``amenability properties'' refers to amenability, weak amenability, and biflatness, as well as some properties which are more suited to special settings, such as the hyper-Tauberian property for semisi…
We consider the Fourier-Stietljes algebra B(G) of a locally compact group G. We show that operator amenablility of B(G) implies that a certain semitolpological compactification of G admits only finitely many idempotents. In the case that G is connected, we show that operator amenability of B(G) entails that $G$ is compact.
Amenability of any of the algebras described in the title is known to force them to be finite-dimensional. The analogous problems for \emph{approximate} amenability have been open for some years now. In this article we give a complete solution for the first two classes, using a new criterion for showing that certain Banach algebras without bounded approximate identities cannot be approximately amenable. The method also provides a unified approach to existing non-approximate amenability results, and is applied to the study of certain commutative Segal algebras. Using different techniques, we pr…
The notion of operator amenability was introduced by Z.-J. Ruan in 1995. He showed that a locally compact group G is amenable if and only if its Fourier algebra A(G) is operator amenable. In this paper, we investigate the operator amenability of the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra B(G) and of the reduced Fourier-Stieltjes algebra B_r(G). The natural conjecture is that any of these algebras is operator amenable if and only if G is compact. We partially prove this conjecture with mere operator amenability replaced by operator C-amenability for some constant C < 5. In the process, we obtain a new decom…
We let the central Fourier algebra, ZA(G), be the subalgebra of functions u in the Fourier algebra A(G) of a compact group, for which u(xyx^{-1})=u(y) for all x,y in G. We show that this algebra admits bounded point derivations whenever G contains a non-abelian closed connected subgroup. Conversely when G is virtually abelian, then ZA(G) is amenable. Furthermore, for virtually abelian G, we establish which closed ideals admit bounded approximate identities. We also show that if ZA(G) is weakly amenable, even hyper-Tauberian, exactly when G admits no non-abelian connected subgroup. We also stud…
We give an example of a non-compact, locally compact group $G$ such that its Fourier-Stieltjes algebra $B(G)$ is operator amenable. Furthermore, we characterize those $G$ for which $A^*(G)$ - the spine of $B(G)$ as introduced by M. Ilie and the second named author - is operator amenable and show that $A^*(G)$ is operator weakly amenable for each $G$.
Using techniques of non-abelian harmonic analysis, we construct an explicit, non-zero cyclic derivation on the Fourier algebra of the real $ax+b$ group. In particular this provides the first proof that this algebra is not weakly amenable. Using the structure theory of Lie groups, we deduce that the Fourier algebras of connected, semisimple Lie groups also support non-zero, cyclic derivations and are likewise not weakly amenable. Our results complement earlier work of Johnson (JLMS, 1994), Plymen (unpublished note) and Forrest--Samei--Spronk (IUMJ 2009). As an additional illustration of our tec…
We study the existence of multiplier (completely) bounded approximate identities for the Fourier algebras of some classes of hypergroups. In particular we show that, a large class of commutative hypergroups are weakly amenable with the Cowling-Haagerup constant 1. As a corollary, we answer an open question of Eymard on Jacobi hypergroups. We also characterize the existence of bounded approximate identities for the hypergroup Fourier algebras of ultraspherical hypergroups.
This paper concerns the study of regular Fourier hypergroups through multipliers of their associated Fourier algebras. We establish hypergroup analogues of well-known characterizations of group amenability, introduce a notion of weak amenability for hypergroups, and show that every discrete commutative hypergroup is weakly amenable with constant 1. Using similar techniques, we provide a sufficient condition for amenability of hypergroup Fourier algebras, which, as an immediate application, answers one direction of a conjecture of Azimifard--Samei--Spronk [J. Funct. Anal. 256(5) 1544-1564, 2009…
We investigate generalized amenability and biflatness properties of various (operator) Segal algebras in both the group algebra, L1(G), and the Fourier algebra, A(G), of a locally compact group, G.
We show that for a connected Lie group $G$, its Fourier algebra $A(G)$ is weakly amenable only if $G$ is abelian. Our main new idea is to show that weak amenability of $A(G)$ implies that the anti-diagonal, $\checkΔ_G=\{(g,g^{-1}):g\in G\}$, is a set of local synthesis for $A(G\times G)$. We then show that this cannot happen if $G$ is non-abelian. We conclude for a locally compact group $G$, that $A(G)$ can be weakly amenable only if it contains no closed connected non-abelian Lie subgroups. In particular, for a Lie group $G$, $A(G)$ is weakly amenable if and only if its connected component of…
Let ${\mathcal L} A(H)$ be the Lebesgue-Fourier space of a hypergroup $H$ considered as a Banach space on $H$. In addition ${\mathcal L}A(H)$ is a Banach algebra with the multiplication inherited from $L^1(H)$. Moreover If $H$ is a regular Fourier hypergroup, ${\mathcal L}A(H)$ is a Banach algebra with pointwise multiplication. We study the amenability and character amenability of these two Banach algebras.
Let $G$ be a locally compact group, and let $A_\cb(G)$ denote the closure of $A(G)$, the Fourier algebra of $G$, in the space of completely bounded multipliers of $A(G)$. If $G$ is a weakly amenable, discrete group such that $\cstar(G)$ is residually finite-dimensional, we show that $A_\cb(G)$ is operator amenable. In particular, $A_\cb(F_2)$ is operator amenable even though $F_2$, the free group in two generators, is not an amenable group. Moreover, we show that, if $G$ is a discrete group such that $A_\cb(G)$ is operator amenable, a closed ideal of $A(G)$ is weakly completely complemented in…
In this note we study two related questions. (1) For a compact group G, what are the ranges of the convolution maps on A(GXG) given for u,v in A(G) by $u X v |-> u*v' ($v'(s)=v(s^{-1})$) and $u X v |-> u*v$? (2) For a locally compact group G and a compact subgroup K, what are the amenability properties of the Fourier algebra of the coset space A(G/K)? The algebra A(G/K) was defined and studied by the first named author. In answering the first question, we obtain for compact groups which do not admit an abelian subgroup of finite index, some new subalgebras of A(G). Using those algebras we can …
Different notions of amenability on hypergroups and their relations are studied. Developing Leptin's theorem for discrete hypergroups, we characterize the existence of a bounded approximate identity for hypergroup Fourier algebras. We study the Leptin condition for discrete hypergroups derived from the representation theory of some classes of compact groups. Studying amenability of the hypergroup algebras for discrete commutative hypergroups, we obtain some results on amenability properties of some central Banach algebras on compact and discrete groups.
In this paper we first show that for a locally compact amenable group $G$, every proper abstract Segal algebra of the Fourier algebra on $G$ is not approximately amenable; consequently, every proper Segal algebra on a locally compact abelian group is not approximately amenable. Then using the hypergroup generated by the dual of a compact group, it is shown that all proper Segal algebras of a class of compact groups including the $2\times 2$ special unitary group, SU(2), are not approximately amenable.
A special case of a conjecture raised by Forrest and Runde (Math. Zeit., 2005) asserts that the Fourier algebra of every non-abelian connected Lie group fails to be weakly amenable; this was aleady known to hold in the non-abelian compact cases, by earlier work of Johnson (JLMS, 1994) and Plymen (unpublished note). In recent work (JFA, 2014) the present authors verified this conjecture for the real ax+b group and hence, by structure theory, for any semisimple Lie group. In this paper we verify the conjecture for all 1-connected, non-abelian nilpotent Lie groups, by reducing the problem to the …
Let $G$ be a compact group. For $1\leq p\leq\infty$ we introduce a class of Banach function algebras $\mathrm{A}^p(G)$ on $G$ which are the Fourier algebras in the case $p=1$, and for $p=2$ are certain algebras discovered in \cite{forrestss1}. In the case $p\not=2$ we find that $\mathrm{A}^p(G)\cong \mathrm{A}^p(H)$ if and only if $G$ and $H$ are isomorphic compact groups. These algebras admit natural operator space structures, and also weighted versions, which we call $p$-Beurling-Fourier algebras. We study various amenability and operator amenability properties, Arens regularity and represen…
Motivated by a result of Ky Fan in 1965, we establish a characterization of a left amenable F-algebra (which includes the group algebra and the Fourier algebra of a locally compact group and quantum group algebras, or more generally the predual algebra of a Hopf von Neumann algebra) in terms of a finite dimensional invariant subspace property. This is done by first revealing a fixed point property for the semigroup of norm one positive linear func- tionals in the algebra. Our result answers an open question posted in Tokyo in 1993 by the first author (see [25, Problem 5]). We also show that th…
We continue the investigation of notions of approximate amenability that were introduced in work of the second and third authors. It is shown that every boundedly approximately contractible Banach algebra has a bounded approximate identity. Among our other results, it is shown that the Fourier algebra of the free group on two generators is not approximately amenable. Further examples are obtained of ${\ell}^1$-semigroup algebras which are approximately amenable but not amenable; using these, we show that bounded approximate amenability need not imply sequential approximate amenability. Results…
Building on our previous work, we study the non-relative homology of quantum group convolution algebras. Our main result establishes the equivalence of amenability of a locally compact quantum group $\mathbb{G}$ and 1-injectivity of $L^{\infty}(\widehat{\mathbb{G}})$ as an operator $L^1(\widehat{\mathbb{G}})$-module. In particular, a locally compact group $G$ is amenable if and only if its group von Neumann algebra $VN(G)$ is 1-injective as an operator module over the Fourier algebra $A(G)$. As an application, we provide a decomposability result for completely bounded $L^1(\widehat{\mathbb{G}}…
Rajchman measures of locally compact Abelian groups are studied for almost a century now, and they play an important role in the study of trigonometric series. Eymard's influential work allowed generalizing these measures to the case of \emph{non-Abelian} locally compact groups $G$. The Rajchman algebra of $G$, which we denote by $B_0(G)$, is the set of all elements of the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra that vanish at infinity. In the present article, we characterize the locally compact groups that have amenable Rajchman algebras. We show that $B_0(G)$ is amenable if and only if $G$ is compact and …
We continue our study of the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra associated to a twisted (unital, discrete) C*-dynamical system and discuss how the various notions of equivalence of such systems are reflected at the algebra-level. As an application, we show that the amenability of a system, as defined in our previous work, is preserved under Morita equivalence.
A locally compact group $G$ is said to be weakly amenable if the Fourier algebra $A(G)$ admits completely bounded approximative units. Consider the family of groups $G_n=SL(2,\Bbb R)\ltimes H_n$ where $n\ge 2$, $H_n$ is the $2n+1$ dimensional Heisenberg group and $SL(2,\Bbb R)$ acts via the irreducible representation of dimension $2n$ fixing the center of $H_n$. We show that these groups fail to be weakly amenable. Following an idea of Haagerup for the case $n=1$ one can reduce matters to the problem of obtaining nontrivial uniform bounds for a family of singular oscillatory integral operators…
In this paper we will study the homological properties of various natural modules associated to the Fourier algebra of a locally compact group. In particular, we will focus on the question of identifying when such modules will be projective in the category of operator spaces. We will show that projectivity often implies that the underlying group is discrete and give evidence to show that amenability also plays an important role.
For a locally compact group $G$, the first-named author considered the closed subspace $a_0(G)$ which is generated by the pure positive definite functions. In many cases $a_0(G)$ is itself an algebra. We illustrate using Heisenburg groups and the $2\times 2$ real special linear group, that this is not the case in general. We examine the structures of the algebras thereby created and examine properties related to amenability.
We study various operator homological properties of the Fourier algebra $A(G)$ of a locally compact group $G$. Establishing the converse of two results of Ruan and Xu, we show that $A(G)$ is relatively operator 1-projective if and only if $G$ is IN, and that $A(G)$ is relatively operator 1-flat if and only if $G$ is inner amenable. We also exhibit the first known class of groups for which $A(G)$ is not relatively operator $C$-flat for any $C\geq1$. As applications of our techniques, we establish a hereditary property of inner amenability, answer an open question of Lau and Paterson, and answer…
Building on recent progress in constructing derivations on Fourier algebras, we provide the first examples of locally compact groups whose Fourier algebras support non-zero, alternating 2-cocycles; this is the first step in a larger project. Although such 2-cocycles can never be completely bounded, the operator space structure on the Fourier algebra plays a crucial role in our construction, as does the opposite operator space structure. Our construction has two main technical ingredients: we observe that certain estimates from [H. H. Lee, J. Ludwig, E. Samei, N. Spronk, Weak amenability of Fou…
In this paper we will study the projetivity of various natural modules associated to operator Segal algebras of the Fourier algebra of a locally compact group. In particular, we will focus on the question of identifying when such modules will be projective in the category of operator spaces. Projectivity often implies that the underlying group is discrete or even finite. We will also look at the projectivity for modules of $A_{cb}(G)$, the closure of $A(G)$ in the space of its completely bounded mutipliers. Here we give an evidence to show that weak amenability of $G$ plays an important role.
This paper is devoted to the study of pointwise convergence of Fourier series for group von Neumann algebras and quantum groups. It is well-known that a number of approximation properties of groups can be interpreted as summation methods and mean convergence of the associated noncommutative Fourier series. Based on this framework, this paper studies the refined counterpart of pointwise convergence of these Fourier series. As a key ingredient, we develop a noncommutative bootstrap method and establish a general criterion of maximal inequalities for approximate identities of noncommutative Fouri…
