This is an expository note on non-amenabilty of the Banach algebra B(\ell_p) for p=1,2. These were proved respectively by Connes (p=2) and Read (p=1) via very different methods. We give a single proof which reproves both.
We show that for a Banach algebra $A$ with a bounded approximate identity, the amenability of the projective tensor product of A with A, the amenability of the projective tensor product of A with A^{op}and the amenability of A are equivalent. Also if A is a closed ideal in a commutative Banach algebra B, then the weak amenability of the projective tensor product of A and B implies the weak amenability of A.
Amenability and pseudo-amenability of $ \ell^{1}(S,ω) $ is characterized, where $S$ is a left (right) zero semigroup or it is a rectangular band semigroup. The equivalence conditions to amenability of $\ell^{1}(S,ω)$ are provided, where $ S $ is a band semigroup. For a locally compact group $G$, pseudo-amenability of $ \ell^{1}(G,ω) $ is also discussed.
We shall develop two notions of pointwise amenability, namely pointwise Connes amenability and pointwise $w^*$-approximate Connes amenability, for dual Banach algebras which take the $w^*$-topology into account. We shall study these concepts for the Banach sequence algebras $\ell^1(ω)$ and the weighted semigroup algebras $ \ell^{1}(\mathbb{N}_{\wedge},ω)$. For a weight $ω$ on a discrete semigroup $S$, we shall investigate pointwise amenability/Connes amenability of $\ell^1(S,ω)$ in terms of diagonals.
In the present paper, the concepts of module (uniform) approximate amenability and contractibility of Banach algebras that are modules over another Banach algebra, are introduced. The general theory is developed and some hereditary properties are given. In analogy with the Banach algebraic approximate amenability, it is shown that module approximate amenability and contractibility are the same properties. It is also shown that module uniform approximate (contractibility) amenability and module (contractibility, respectively) amenability for commutative Banach modules are equivalent. Applying t…
In this paper we introduce a new notion of strong pseudo-amenability for Banach algebras. We study strong pseudo-amenability of some Matrix algebras. Using this tool, we characterize strong pseudo-amenability of $\ell^{1}(S)$, provided that $S$ is a uniformly locally finite semigroup. As an application we show that for a Brandt semigroup $S=M^{0}(G,I)$, $\ell^{1}(S)$ is strong pseudo-amenable if and only if $G$ is amenable and $I$ is finite. We give some examples to show the differences of strong pseudo-amenability and other classical notions of amenability.
We extend the concept of amenability of a Banach algebra $A$ to the case that there is an extra $\mathfrak A$-module structure on $A$, and show that when $S$ is an inverse semigroup with subsemigroup $E$ of idempotents, then $A=\ell^1(S)$ as a Banach module over $\mathfrak A=\ell^1(E)$ is module amenable iff $S$ is amenable. When $S$ is a discrete group, $\ell^1(E)=\mathbb C$ and this is just the celebrated Johnson's theorem.
In this short note we introduce a notion called "quantum injectivity" of locally compact quantum groups, and prove that it is equivalent to amenability of the dual. Particularly, this provides a new characterization of amenability of locally compact groups.
The notions of module pseudo-amenable and module pseudo-contractible Banach algebras are introduced. For a Banach algebra with bounded approximate identity, module pseudo-amenability and module approximate amenability are the same properties. It is given a complete characterization of module pseudo-amenability for a Banach algebra. For every inverse semigroup $S$ with subsemigroup $E$ of idempotents, necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained for the $\ell^1(S)$ and its second dual to be $\ell^1(E)$-module pseudo-amenable.
Let $\mathcal A$, $\mathcal B$ be Banach $\mathfrak A$-modules with compatible actions and $\mathcal M$ be a left Banach $\mathcal A$-$\mathfrak A$-module and a right Banach $\mathcal B$-$\mathfrak A$-module. In the current paper, we study module amenability, $n$-weak module amenability and module Arens regularity of the triangular Banach algebra $\mathcal T=[ {cc} \mathcal A & \mathcal M & \mathcal B ]$ (as an $\mathfrak T:=\Big{[ {cc} α& & α ] | α\in\mathfrak A\Big}$-module). We employ these results to prove that for an inverse semigroup $S$ with subsemigroup $E$ of idempotents, the triangul…
Let $S$ be an inverse semigroup with an upward directed set of idempotents $E$. In this paper we define the module topological center of second dual of a Banach algebra which is a Banach module over another Banach algebra with compatible actions, and find it for $ \ell ^{1}(S)^{**}$ (as an $\ell^{1}(E)$-module). We also prove that $ \ell ^{1}(S)^{**}$ is $\ell^{1}(E)$-module amenable if and only if an appropriate group homomorphic image of $S$ is finite.
Let $S$ be an inverse semigroup with the set of idempotents $E$. In this paper we define the module super-amenability of a Banach algebra which is a Banach module over another Banach algebra with compatible actions, and show that when $E$ is upward directed and acts on $S$ trivially from left and by multiplication from right, the semigroup algebra $ \ell ^{1}(S)$ is $\ell^{1}(E)$-module super-amenable if and only if an appropriate group homomorphic image of $S$ is finite.
In this note, we prove that a semigroup $S$ is left amenable if and only if every two nonzero elements of $\ell^1_+(S)$ have a common nonzero right multiple, where $\ell^1_+(S)$ is the positive part of the Banach algebra $\ell^1(S)$, or equivalently the semiring of finite measures on $S$. This characterization of amenability is new even for groups.
It is shown that for a locally compact group $G$, if $L^{1}(G)^{**}$ is approximately weakly amenable, then $M(G)$ is approximately weakly amenable. Then, new notions of approximate weak amenability and approximate cyclic amenability for Banach algebras are introduced. Bounded $ω^{*}$-approximately weakly [cyclic] amenable $\ell^{1}$-Munn algebras are characterized.
Let $S$ be an inverse semigroup with the set of idempotents $E$. We prove that the semigroup algebra $\ell^{1}(S)$ is always $2n$-weakly module amenable as an $\ell^{1}(E)$-module, for any $n\in \mathbb{N}$, where $E$ acts on $S$ trivially from the left and by multiplication from the right.
In this paper, we study the hereditary properties of module $(ϕ,φ)$-amenability on Banach algebras. We also define the concept of module character contractibility for Banach algebras and obtain characterizations of module character contractible Banach algebras in terms of the existence of module $(ϕ,φ)$-diagonals. We introduce module approximately character amenable Banach algebras. Finally, for every inverse semigroup $S$ with subsemigroup $E$ of idempotents, we find necessary and sufficient conditions for the $\ell^1(S)$ and its second dual to be module approximate character amenable (as a $…
This paper examines Shavgulidze's postings to the ArXiv and publications which concern his argument that Thompson's group F is amenable. In particular I list specific places where there are errors in each of the postings and publications and give a public clarification of some of the speculation around these papers.
For a Banach algebra $ \mathcal{A} $, we introduce various approximate virtual diagonals such as approximate WAP-virtual diagonal and approximate virtual diagonal. For the enveloping dual Banach algebra $ F(\mathcal{A}) $ of $ \mathcal{A} $, we show that $ F(\mathcal{A}) $ is approximately Connes-amenable if and only if $ \mathcal{A} $ has an approximate WAP-virtual diagonal. Further, for a discrete group $ G $, we show that if the group algebra $ \ell^1(G) $ has an approximate WAP-virtual diagonal, then it has an approximate virtual diagonal.
In this paper, we introduce the new notion of strong pseudo-Connes amenability for dual Banach algebras. We study the relation between this new notion to the various notions of Connes amenability. Also we show that for every non-empty set $I$, $M_I(\mathbb{C})$ is strong pseudo-Connes amenable if and only if $I$ is finite. We provide some examples of certain dual Banach algebras and we study its strong pseudo-Connes amenability. In the last section, we investigate the property ultra central approximate identity for a Banach algebra $\mathcal{A}$ and its second dual $\mathcal{A}^{**}$. Also we …
In 1972, the late B. E. Johnson introduced the notion of an amenable Banach algebra and asked whether the Banach algebra $B(E)$ of all bounded linear operators on a Banach space $E$ could ever be amenable if $\dim E = \infty$. Somewhat surprisingly, this question was answered positively only very recently as a by-product of the Argyros--Haydon result that solves the "scalar plus compact problem": there is an infinite-dimensional Banach space $E$, the dual of which is $\ell^1$, such that $B(E) = K(E)+ \mathbb{C} \id_E$. Still, $B(\ell^2)$ is not amenable, and in the past decade, $ B(\ell^p)$ wa…
In this paper, we countinue our work in \cite{11}. We show that $L^{1}(G,w)$ is $ϕ_{0}$-biprojective if and only if $G$ is compact, where $ϕ_{0}$ is the augmentation character. We introduce the notions of character Johnson amenability and character Johnson contractibility for Banach algebras. We show that $\ell^{1}(S)$ is pseudo-amenable if and only if $\ell^{1}(S)$ is character Johnson-amenable, provided that $S$ is a uniformly locally finite band semigroup. We give some conditions whether $ϕ$-biprojectivity ($ϕ$-biflatness) of $\ell^{1}(S)$ implies the finiteness (amenability) of $S$, respec…
We continue the investigation of notions of approximate amenability that were introduced in work of the second and third authors. It is shown that every boundedly approximately contractible Banach algebra has a bounded approximate identity. Among our other results, it is shown that the Fourier algebra of the free group on two generators is not approximately amenable. Further examples are obtained of ${\ell}^1$-semigroup algebras which are approximately amenable but not amenable; using these, we show that bounded approximate amenability need not imply sequential approximate amenability. Results…
Let $A$ and $X$ be Banach algebras and let $X$ be an algebraic Banach $A-$module. Then the $\ell^1-$direct sum $A\times X$ equipped with the multiplication $$(a,x)(b,y)=(ab, ay+xb+xy)\quad (a,b\in A, x,y\in X)$$ is a Banach algebra, denoted by $A\bowtie X$, which will be called "\textit{a generalized module extension Banach algebra}". Module extension algebras, Lau product and also the direct sum of Banach algebras are the main examples satisfying this framework. We characterize the structure of $n-$dual valued ($n\in\mathbb N)$) derivations on $A\bowtie X$ from which we investigate the $n-$we…
In this note, we study the Arens regularity of projective tensor product $A\hat{\otimes}B$ whenever $A$ and $B$ are Arens regular. We establish some new conditions for showing that the Banach algebras $A$ and $B$ are Arens regular if and only if $A\hat{\otimes}B$ is Arens regular. We also introduce some new concepts as left-weak$^*$-weak convergence property [$Lw^*wc-$property] and right-weak$^*$-weak convergence property [$Rw^*wc-$property] and for Banach algebra $A$, suppose that $A^*$ and $A^{**}$, respectively, have $Rw^*wc-$property and $Lw^*wc-$property. Then if $A^{**}$ is weakly amenab…
Let $B$ be a Banach $A-bimodule$. We introduce the weak topological centers of left module action and we show it by $\tilde{Z}^\ell_{B^{**}}(A^{**})$. For a compact group, we show that $L^1(G)=\tilde{Z}_{M(G)^{**}}^\ell(L^1(G)^{**})$ and on the other hand we have $\tilde{Z}_1^\ell{(c_0^{**})}\neq c_0^{**}$. Thus the weak topological centers are different with topological centers of left or right module actions. In this manuscript, we investigate the relationships between two concepts with some conclusions in Banach algebras. We also have some application of this new concept and topological cen…
Using techniques of non-abelian harmonic analysis, we construct an explicit, non-zero cyclic derivation on the Fourier algebra of the real $ax+b$ group. In particular this provides the first proof that this algebra is not weakly amenable. Using the structure theory of Lie groups, we deduce that the Fourier algebras of connected, semisimple Lie groups also support non-zero, cyclic derivations and are likewise not weakly amenable. Our results complement earlier work of Johnson (JLMS, 1994), Plymen (unpublished note) and Forrest--Samei--Spronk (IUMJ 2009). As an additional illustration of our tec…
Let $E$ be a Banach space, and $\mathcal B(E)$ the algebra of all bounded linear operators on $E$. The question of amenability of $\mathcal B(E)$ goes back to Johnson's seminal memoir \cite{johnson} from 1972. We present the first general criteria applying to very wide classes of Banach spaces, given in terms of the Banach space geometry of $E$, which imply that $\mathcal B(E)$ is non-amenable. We cover all spaces for which this is known so far (with the exception of one particular example), with much shorter proofs, such as $\ell_p$ for $p \in [1, \infty]$ and $c_0$, but also many new spaces:…
Non-amenability of ${\mathcal B}(E)$ has been surprisingly difficult to prove for the classical Banach spaces, but is now known for $E= \ell_p$ and $E=L_p$ for all $1\leq p<\infty$. However, the arguments are rather indirect: the proof for $L_1$ goes via non-amenability of $\ell^\infty({\mathcal K}(\ell_1))$ and a transference principle developed by Daws and Runde (Studia Math., 2010). In this note, we provide a short proof that ${\mathcal B}(L_1)$ and some of its subalgebras are non-amenable, which completely bypasses all of this machinery. Our approach is based on classical properties of the…
We calculate the exact amenability constant of the centre of $\ell^1(G)$ when $G$ is one of the following classes of finite group: dihedral; extraspecial; or Frobenius with abelian complement and kernel. This is done using a formula which applies to all finite groups with two character degrees. In passing, we answer in the negative a question raised in work of the third author with Azimifard and Spronk (J. Funct. Anal. 2009).
In this paper, we investigate the notion of approximate biprojectivity for semigroup algebras and for some Banach algebras related to semigroup algebras. We show that $\ell^{1}(S)$ is approximately biprojective if and only if $\ell^{1}(S)$ is biprojective, provided that $S$ is a uniformly locally finite inverse semigroup. Also for a Clifford semigroup $S$, we show that approximate biprojectivity $\ell^{1}(S)^{**}$ gives pseudo amenability of $\ell^{1}(S)$. We give a class of Banach algebras related to semigroup algebras which is not approximately biprojective.
This note describes the first example of a group that is amenable, but cannot be obtained by subgroups, quotients, extensions and direct limits from the class of groups locally of subexponential growth. It has a balanced presentation \[Δ= < b,t|[b,t^2]b^{-1},[[[b,t^{-1}],b],b]>.\] I show that it acts transitively on a 3-regular tree, and that $Γ=< b,b^{t^{-1}}$ stabilizes a vertex and acts by restriction on a binary rooted tree. $Γ$ is a "fractal group", generated by a 3-state automaton, and is a discrete analogue of the monodromy action of iterates of f(z)=z^2-1 on associated coverings of the…
In this note we study two related questions. (1) For a compact group G, what are the ranges of the convolution maps on A(GXG) given for u,v in A(G) by $u X v |-> u*v' ($v'(s)=v(s^{-1})$) and $u X v |-> u*v$? (2) For a locally compact group G and a compact subgroup K, what are the amenability properties of the Fourier algebra of the coset space A(G/K)? The algebra A(G/K) was defined and studied by the first named author. In answering the first question, we obtain for compact groups which do not admit an abelian subgroup of finite index, some new subalgebras of A(G). Using those algebras we can …
We prove that a discrete group $G$ is amenable iff it is strongly unitarizable in the following sense: every unitarizable representation $π$ on $G$ can be unitarized by an invertible chosen in the von Neumann algebra generated by the range of $π$. Analogously a $C^*$-algebra $A$ is nuclear iff any bounded homomorphism $u: A\to B(H)$ is strongly similar to a $*$-homomorphism in the sense that there is an invertible operator $ξ$ in the von Neumann algebra generated by the range of $u$ such that $a\to ξu(a) ξ^{-1}$ is a $*$-homomorphism. An analogous characterization holds in terms of derivations…
A special case of a conjecture raised by Forrest and Runde (Math. Zeit., 2005) asserts that the Fourier algebra of every non-abelian connected Lie group fails to be weakly amenable; this was aleady known to hold in the non-abelian compact cases, by earlier work of Johnson (JLMS, 1994) and Plymen (unpublished note). In recent work (JFA, 2014) the present authors verified this conjecture for the real ax+b group and hence, by structure theory, for any semisimple Lie group. In this paper we verify the conjecture for all 1-connected, non-abelian nilpotent Lie groups, by reducing the problem to the …

Let $G$ be a restricted direct product of finite groups $\{G_i \}_{i\in I}$, and let $\Zl^1(G)$ denote the centre of its group algebra. We show that $\Zl^1(G)$ is amenable if and only if $G_i$ is abelian for all but finitely many $i$, and characterize the maximal ideals of $\Zl^1(G)$ which have bounded approximate identities. We also study when an algebra character of $\Zl^1(G)$ belongs to $c_0$ or $\ell^p$ and provide a variety of examples.
We prove that for every group $G$ and any two sets $I,J$, the Brandt semigroup algebras $\ell(B(I,G))$ and $\ell(B(J,G))$ are Morita equivalent with respect to the Morita theory of self-induced Banach algebras introduced by Gronbaek. As applications, we show that if $G$ is an amenable group, then for a wide class of Banach $\ell(B(I,G))$-bimodules $E$, and every $n>0$, the bounded Hochschild cohomology groups $H^n(\ell(B(I,G)),E^*)$ are trivial, and also, the notion of approximate amenability is not Morita invariant.
We show that, if $E$ is a Banach space with a basis satisfying a certain condition, then the Banach algebra $\ell^\infty({\cal K}(\ell^2 \oplus E))$ is not amenable; in particular, this is true for $E = \ell^p$ with $p \in (1,\infty)$. As a consequence, $\ell^\infty({\cal K}(E))$ is not amenable for any infinite-dimensional ${\cal L}^p$-space. This, in turn, entails the non-amenability of ${\cal B}(\ell^p(E))$ for any ${\cal L}^p$-space $E$, so that, in particular, ${\cal B}(\ell^p)$ and ${\cal B}(L^p[0,1])$ are not amenable.
The relation between different notions measuring proximity to $\ell_1$ and distortability of a Banach space is studied. The main result states that a Banach space, whose all subspaces have Bourgain $\ell_1$ index greater than $ω^α$, $α<ω_1$, contains either an arbitrary distortable subspace or an $\ell_1^α$-asymptotic subspace.
The main purpose of this paper is to study some geometric and topological properties on $ c_0$ sum of the finite dimensional Banach lattice $\ell_2^n$, its dual and its bidual. Among other results, we show that the Banach lattices $c_0(\ell_2^n)$ has the strong Gelfand-Philips property, but does not have the positive Grothendieck property. We also prove that the closed unit ball of $l_{\infty}(\ell_2^n)$ is an almost limited set.
TO BE PUBLISHED BY ISRAEL JOURNAL OF MATHEMATICS. We study the mean $\sum_{x\in\mathcal{X}} \bigl|\sum_{p\le N}{}u_p e(xp)\bigr|^{\ell}$ when $\ell$ covers the full range $[2,\infty)$ and $\mathcal{X}\subset\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}$ is a {well-spaced} set, providing a smooth transition from the case $\ell=2$ to the case $\ell>2$ and improving on the results of J.~Bourgain and of B.~Green and T.~Tao. A uniform Hardy-Littlewood property for the set of primes is established as well as a sharp upper bound for $\sum_{x\in\mathcal{X}} \bigl|\sum_{p\le N}{}u_p e(xp)\bigr|^{\ell}$ when $\mathcal{X}$ is s…
It is well-known that every weakly convergent sequence in $\ell_1$ is convergent in the norm topology (Schur's lemma). Phillips' lemma asserts even more strongly that if a sequence $(μ_n)_{n\in\mathbb N}$ in $\ell_\infty'$ converges pointwise on $\{0,1\}^\mathbb N$ to $0$, then its $\ell_1$-projection converges in norm to $0$. In this note we show how the second category version of Schur's lemma, for which a short proof is included, can be used to replace in Phillips' lemma $\{0,1\}^\mathbb N$ by any of its subsets which contains all finite sets and having some kind of interpolation property f…
