We derive the Hasse principle and weak approximation for pencils of certain varieties in the spirit of work by Colliot-Thélène,Sansuc and Harpaz-Skorobogatov-Wittenberg. Our varieties are defined through polynomials in many variables and part of our work is devoted to establishing Schinzel's hypothesis for polynomials of this kind. This last part is achieved by using arguments behind Birch's well-known result regarding the Hasse principle for complete intersections with the notable difference that we prove our result in 50% fewer variables than in the classical Birch setting. We also study the problem of square-free values of an integer polynomial with 66.6% fewer variables than in the Birch setting.
The aim of this paper is to provide sufficient conditions for when a polynomial or rational function over a field K is prime using its order of vanishing at infinity and the resultant.
In this paper, we use the methods of Andrade, Rudnick and Soundarajan to prove a Theorem about Lower bounds of moments of quadratic Dirichlet L-functions associated to monic irreducible polynomials over function fields.
Given a pair of regular quadratic forms over $\mathbb{Q}$ which are in the same genus and a finite set of primes $P$, we show that there is an effective way to determine a rational equivalence between these two quadratic forms which are integral over every prime in $P$. This answers one of the principal questions posed by Conway and Sloane in their book {\em Sphere packings, lattices and groups}, Grundlehren der Mathematischen Wissenschaften [Fundamental Principles of Mathematical Sciences], Vol 290, Springer-Verlag, New York, 1999; page 402.

Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve, and $p$ a prime where $E$ has good reduction, and assume that $E$ admits a rational $p$-isogeny. In this paper, we study the anticyclotomic Iwasawa theory of $E$ over an imaginary quadratic field in which $p$ splits, which we relate to the anticyclotomic Iwasawa theory of characters following the method of Greenberg--Vatsal. As a result of our study, we obtain a proof, under mild hypotheses, of Perrin-Riou's Heegner point main conjecture, as well as a $p$-converse to the theorem of Gross--Zagier and Kolyvagin and the $p$-part of the Birch--Swinnerton-Dy…
In his work about Galois representations, Greenberg conjectured the existence, for any odd prime p and any positive integer t, of a multiquadratic p-rational number field of degree 2 t. In this article, we prove that there exists infinitely many primes p such that the triquadratic field Q(p(p + 2), p(p -- 2), i) is p-rational. To do this, we use an analytic result, proved apart in section \S4, providing us with infinitely many prime numbers p such that p + 2 et p -- 2 have ''big'' square factors. Therefore the related imaginary quadratic subfields Q(i $\sqrt$ p + 2), Q(i $\sqrt$ p -- 2) and Q(…
For each odd prime $p$, we prove the existence of infinitely many real quadratic fields which are $p$-rational. Explicit imaginary and real bi-quadratic $p$-rational fields are also given for each prime $p$. Using a recent method developed by Greenberg, we deduce the existence of Galois extensions of $\mathbf{Q}$ with Galois group isomorphic to an open subgroup of $GL_n(\mathbf{Z_p})$, for $n =4$ and $n =5$ and at least for all the primes $p <192.699.943$.
We consider the reduction of an elliptic curve defined over the rational numbers modulo primes in a given arithmetic progression and investigate how often the subgroup of rational points of this reduced curve is cyclic as a special case of Serre's Cyclicity Conjecture.
For K a cyclic cubic number field with odd class number containing a unit w such that Norm(w)=Norm(1-w)=-1, we prove that the density of rational primes p that satisfy the given spin relation is equal to 1/2. Furthermore, we prove that this density restricted to rational primes that are 1 mod 4 is 1/4 and this density restricted to rational primes that are -1 mod 4 is 3/4.
We use the method of quadratic Chabauty on the quotients $X_0^+(N)$ of modular curves $X_0(N)$ by their Fricke involutions to provably compute all the rational points of these curves for prime levels $N$ of genus four, five, and six. We find that the only such curves with exceptional rational points are of levels $137$ and $311$. In particular there are no exceptional rational points on those curves of genus five and six. More precisely, we determine the rational points on the curves $X_0^+(N)$ for $N=137,173,199,251,311,157,181,227,263,163,197,211,223,269,271,359$.
It is well known that the arithmetic nature of Mills' prime-representing constant is uncertain: we do not know if Mills' constant is a rational or irrational number. In the case of other prime-representing constants, irrationality can be proved, but it is not known whether these constants are algebraic or transcendental numbers. By using Liouville or Roth's theorems about approximation by rationals, we find a couple of prime-representing constants that can be proved to be transcendental numbers.
For each open subgroup $G$ of ${\rm GL}_2(\hat{\mathbb{Z}})$ containing $-I$ with full determinant, let $X_G/\mathbb{Q}$ denote the modular curve that loosely parametrizes elliptic curves whose Galois representation, which arises from the Galois action on its torsion points, has image contained in $G$. Up to conjugacy, we determine a complete list of the $248$ such groups $G$ of prime power level for which $X_G(\mathbb{Q})$ is infinite. For each $G$, we also construct explicit maps from each $X_G$ to the $j$-line. This list consists of $220$ modular curves of genus $0$ and $28$ modular curves …
Any ideal in a number field can be factored into a product of prime ideals. In this paper we study the prime ideal shortest vector problem (SVP) in the ring $ \Z[x]/(x^{2^n} + 1) $, a popular choice in the design of ideal lattice based cryptosystems. We show that a majority of rational primes lie under prime ideals admitting a polynomial time algorithm for SVP. Although the shortest vector problem of ideal lattices underpins the security of Ring-LWE cryptosystem, this work does not break Ring-LWE, since the security reduction is from the worst case ideal SVP to the average case Ring-LWE, and i…
In 2016, in the work related to Galois representations, Greenberg conjectured the existence of multi-quadratic $p$-rational number fields of degree $2^{t}$ for any odd prime number $p$ and any integer $t \geq 1$. Using the criteria provided by him to check $p$-rationality for abelian number fields, certain infinite families of quadratic, biquadratic and triquadratic $p$-rational fields have been shown to exist in recent years. In this article, for any integer $k \geq 1$, we build upon the existing work and prove the existence of infinitely many prime numbers $p$ for which the imaginary quadrat…
We consider the generalised Jacobian $J_{0}(N)_{\mathbf{m}}$ of the modular curve $X_{0}(N)$ of level $N$, with respect to the modulus $\mathbf{m}$ consisting of all cusps on the modular curve. When $N$ is odd, we determine the group structure of the rational torsion $J_{0}(N)_{\mathbf{m}}(\mathbb{Q})_{tor}$ up to $2$-primary and $l$-primary parts for any prime $l$ dividing $N$. Our results extend those of Wei--Yamazaki for squarefree levels and Yamazaki--Yang for prime-power levels.
For a cyclic Kummer extension $K$ of a rational function field $k$ is considered, via class field theory, the extended Hilbert class field $K_H^+$ of $K$ and the corresponding extended genus field $K_g^+$ of $K$ over $k$, along the lines of the definitions of R. Clement for such extensions of prime degree. We obtain $K_g^+$ explicitly. Also, we use cohomology to determine the number of ambiguous classes and obtain a reciprocity law for $K/k$. Finally, we present a necessary and sufficient condition for a prime of $K$ to decompose fully in $K_g^+$.
Let $b \geq 2$ be an integer and $S$ be a finite non-empty set of primes not containing divisors of $b$. For any non-dense set $A \subset [0,1)$ such that $A \cap \mathbb{Q}$ is invariant under $\times b$ operation, we prove the finiteness of rational numbers in $A$ whose denominators can only be divided by primes in $S$. A quantitative result on the largest prime divisors of the denominators of rational numbers in $A$ is also obtained.
We present a database of rational elliptic curves, up to Q-isomorphism, with good reduction outside {2,3,5,7,11,13}. We provide a heuristic involving the abc and BSD conjectures that the database is likely to be the complete set of such curves. Moreover, proving completeness likely needs only more computation time to conclude. We present data on the distribution of various quantities associated to curves in the set. We also discuss the connection to S-unit equations and the existence of rational elliptic curves with maximal conductor.
For a given elliptic curve $E$ defined over the rationals, we study the density of primes $p$ satisfying $\mathrm{gcd}(\#E(\mathbb{F}_p),p-1)=1$ and give a conjectural value for this density with strong heuristic evidence for most elliptic curves, in an appropriate sense.
Let $K$ be a global function field of characteristic $p$ and degree $D$ over $\mathbb F_{p}(t)$. We consider dynamical systems over the projective line $\mathbb P^1(K)$ defined by rational maps with at most one prime of bad reduction. The main result is an optimal bound for cycle lengths that only depends on $p$ and $D$. A bound for the cardinality of finite orbits is given as well. Our method is based on a careful analysis (for every prime of good reduction) of the $\mathfrak p$-adic distances between points belonging to the same finite orbit, in part motivated by previous work by Canci and P…
For an imaginary quadratic field $k$ of class number $>1$, we prove that there are only finitely many isomorphism classes of rational indefinite quaternion division algebras $B$ such that the associated Shimura curve $M^B$ has $k$-rational points. In other words, the main result asserts that there is a finite set $P(k)$ of prime numbers depending on $k$ such that: if there is a prime divisor of the discriminant of $B$ which is not in $P(k)$, then $M^B$ has no $k$-rational points. Moreover, we can take $P(k)$ to satisfy the following: There is an effectively computable constant $C(k)$ depending…
