Inoue constructed the first examples of smooth minimal complex surfaces of general type with $p_g=0$ and $K^2=7$.These surfaces are finite Galois covers of the $4$-nodal cubic surface with the Galois group, the Klein group $\mathbb{Z}_2\times \mathbb{Z}_2$. For such a surface $S$, the bicanonical map of $S$ has degree $2$ and it is composed with exactly one involution in the Galois group. The divisorial part of the fixed locus of this involution consists of two irreducible components:one is a genus $3$ curve with self-intersection number $0$ and the other is a genus $2$ curve with self-intersection number $-1$.
Conversely, assume that $S$ is a smooth minimal complex surface of general type with $p_g=0$, $K^2=7$ and having an involution $σ$. We show that, if the divisorial part of the fixed locus of $σ$ consists of two irreducible components $R_1$ and $R_2$,with $g(R_1)=3, R_1^2=0, g(R_2)=2$ and $R_2^2=-1$, then the Klein group $\mathbb{Z}_2\times \mathbb{Z}_2$ acts faithfully on $S$ and $S$ is indeed an Inoue surface.
The aim of this article is to prove Bloch's conjecture (asserting that the group of rational equivalence classes of zero cycles of degree zero is trivial) for Inoue surfaces with p_g=0 and K^2 = 7. These surfaces can also be described as bidouble covers of the four nodal cubic, which allows to use the method of "enough automorphisms" introduced by Inose-Mizukami (in a simplified version).
We show that a family of minimal surfaces of general type with p_g = 0, K^2=7, constructed by Inoue in 1994, is indeed a connected component of the moduli space: indeed that any surface which is homotopically equivalent to an Inoue surface belongs to the Inoue family. The ideas used in order to show this result motivate us to give a new definition of varieties, which we propose to call Inoue-type manifolds: these are obtained as quotients \hat{X} / G, where \hat{X} is an ample divisor in a K(Γ, 1) projective manifold Z, and G is a finite group acting freely on \hat{X} . For these type of manif…
We show that any hyperbolic Inoue surface (or Inoue-Hirzebruch surface of even type) admits anti-self-dual bihermitian structures. The same result also holds for any of its small deformations as far as its anti-canonical system is non-empty. Similar results are obtained for parabolic Inoue surfaces. Our method also yields anti-self-dual hermitian metrics on any half Inoue surface. We use the twistor method of Donaldson-Friedman for the proof.
Let $S$ be a smooth minimal complex surface of general type with $p_g=0$ and $K^2=7$. We prove that any involution on $S$ is in the center of the automorphism group of $S$. As an application, we show that the automorphism group of an Inoue surface with $K^2=7$ is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}_2^2$ or $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_4$. We construct a $2$-dimensional family of Inoue surfaces with automorphism groups isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_4$.
We determine explicitly the structure of the automorphism group of a parabolic Inoue surface. We also describe the quotients of the surface by typical cyclic subgroups of the automorphism group.
We give a characterization of Inoue surfaces in terms of automorphic pluriharmonic functions on a cyclic covering. Together with results of Chiose and Toma, this completes the classification of compact complex surfaces of Kaehler rank one.
We prove that the natural $(\operatorname{Aff} _2(\mathbf{C}),\mathbf{C}^2)$-structure on an Inoue surface is the unique $(\operatorname{Bir}(\mathbb{P}^2),\mathbb{P}^2(\mathbf{C}))$-structure, generalizing a result of Bruno Klingler which asserts that the natural $(\operatorname{Aff}_2(\mathbf{C}),\mathbf{C}^2)$-structure is the unique $(\operatorname{PGL} _3(\mathbf{C}),\mathbb{P}^2(\mathbf{C}))$-structure.
The aim of this article is to classify the pairs (S, G), where S is a smooth minimal surface of general type with p_g=0 and K^2=7, G is a subgroup of the automorphism group of S and G is isomorphic to the group $\mathbb{Z}_2^2$. The Inoue surfaces with K^2=7, which are finite Galois $\mathbb{Z}_2^2$-covers of the 4-nodal cubic surface, are the first examples of such pairs. More recently, the author constructed a new family of such pairs. They are finite Galois $\mathbb{Z}_2^2$-covers of certain 6-nodal Del Pezzo surfaces of degree one. We prove that the base of the Kuranishi family of deformat…
The Inoue surfaces are certain non-Kaehler complex surfaces that have the structure of a $T^3$ bundle over the circle. We study the Inoue surfaces $S_M$ with the Tricerri metric and the canonical spin$^c$ structure, and the corresponding chiral Dirac operators twisted by a flat $\mathbb C^*$--connection. The twisting connection is determined by $z \in \mathbb C^*$, and the points for which the twisted Dirac operators $\mathcal D^{\pm}_z$ are not invertible are called spectral points. We show that there are no spectral points inside the annulus $α^{-1/4} < |z| < α^{1/4}$, where $α>1$ is the onl…
Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds are complex non-Kähler manifolds constructed by Oeljeklaus and Toma from certain number fields. These manifolds generalize Inoue surfaces of type $S_m$. In this work it is shown that Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds could not contain any compact complex submanifolds of dimension 2 (surfaces) except Inoue surfaces.
We give a new proof of a theorem of Bogomolov, that the only $VII_0$ surfaces with $b_2 = 0$ are those constructed by Hopf and Inoue. The proof follows the strategy of the original one, but it is of purely group-theoretic nature.
We construct models of involution surface bundles over algebraic surfaces, degenerating over normal crossing divisors, and with controlled singularities of the total space.
In this note we are going to consider a smooth projective surface equipped with an involution and study the action of the involution at the level of Chow group of zero cycles.
We study the maps induced on cohomology by a Nikulin (i.e. a symplectic) involution on a K3 surface. We parametrize the eleven dimensional irreducible components of the moduli space of algebraic K3 surfaces with a Nikulin involution and we give examples of the general K3 surface in various components. We conclude with some remarks on Morrison-Nikulin involutions, these are Nikulin involutions which interchange two copies of E_8(-1) in the Neron Severi group.
In this note we are going to consider a smooth projective surface equipped with an involution and study the action of the involution at the level of Chow group of zero cycles.
This paper is about a generalization of famous Inoue's surfaces. Let $M$ be a matrix in $SL(2n+1,\mathbb{Z})$ having only one real eigenvalue which is simple. We associate to $M$ a complex manifold $T_M$ of complex dimension $n+1$. This manifold fibers over $S^1$ with the fiber $\mathbb{T}^{2n+1}$ and monodromy $M^\top$. Our construction is elementary and does not use algebraic number theory. We show that some of the Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds are biholomorphic to the manifolds of type $T_M$. We prove that if $M$ is not diagonalizable, then $T_M$ does not admit a Kähler structure and is not hom…
Symplectic involutions of a K3 surface are those involutions which leave the holomorphic 2-form invariant. We show, as predicted by Bloch's conjecture, that they act trivially on the CH_0 group of the K3 surface. This was recently proved by Huybrechts and Kemeny for one of the three types of symplectic involutions.
In this short note we prove that the Bloch's conjecture holds for a surface of general type of numerical Godeaux type or some class of numerical Campedelli type, with geometric genus zero equipped with an involution, when the quotient of the surface by the involution is a rational surface.
An involution on a surface induces involutions on the cohomology, the Chow group and the Brauer group of the surface. We give a detailed study of those actions. We show that the odd part of these groups can be used to describe the geometry of cubic fourfolds and conic bundles over $\mathbb{P}^3$.
This is the first in a series of articles on the moduli spaces of Burniat surfaces. We prove that Burniat surfaces are Inoue surfaces and we calculate their fundamental groups. As a main result of this paper we prove that every smooth projective surface which is homotopically equivalent to a primary Burniat surface (i.e., a Burniat surface with K^2 = 6) is indeed a primary Burniat surface.
Quaternionic Shimura surfaces are quotient of the bidisc by an irreducible cocompact arithmetic group. In the present paper we are interested in (smooth) quaternionic Shimura surfaces admitting an automorphism with one dimensional fixed locus; such automorphisms are involutions. We propose a new construction of surfaces of general type with $q=p_{g}=0$ as quotients of quaternionic Shimura surfaces by such involutions. These quotients have finite fundamental group.
We present the classification of involutions on Enriques surfaces. We classify those into 18 types with the help of the lattice theory due to Nikulin. We also give all examples of the classification.
Numerical Campedelli surfaces are minimal surfaces of general type with p_g=0 (and so q=0) and K^2=2. Although they have been studied by several authors, their complete classification is not known. In this paper we classify numerical Campedelli surfaces with an involution, i.e. an automorphism of order 2. First we show that an involution on a numerical Campedelli surface S has either four or six isolated fixed points, and the bicanonical map of S is composed with the involution if and only if the involution has six isolated fixed points. Then we study in detail each of the possible cases, desc…
In this paper we classify the elliptic fibrations on K3 surfaces which are the double cover of a blow up of $\mathbb{P}^2$ branched along rational curves and we give equations for many of these elliptic fibrations. Thus we obtain a classification of the van Geemen--Sarti involutions (which are symplectic involutions induced by a translation by a 2-torsion section on an elliptic fibration) on such a surface. Each van Geemen--Sarti involution induces a 2-isogeny between two K3 surfaces, which is described in this paper.
We show that there is a surjection from the Fourier-Mukai transformations on projective K3 surfaces with the Picard number $ρ(X)=1$ to so called to the group of Atkin-Lehner involutions. This was expected in Hosono-Lian-Oguiso-Yau's paper.
We classify Enriques involutions on a K3 surface, up to conjugation in the automorphism group, in terms of lattice theory. We enumerate such involutions on singular K3 surfaces with transcendental lattice of discriminant smaller than or equal to 36. For 11 of these K3 surfaces, we apply Borcherds method to compute the automorphism group of the Enriques surfaces covered by them. In particular, we investigate the structure of the two most algebraic Enriques surfaces.
In this short note we prove that an involution on certain examples of surfaces of general type with $p_g=0$, acts as identity on the Chow group of zero cycles of the relevant surface. In particular we consider examples of such surfaces when the quotient is an Enriques surface and show that the Bloch's conjecture holds for such surfaces.
In this paper we study on the involution on minimal surfaces of general type with $p_g=q=0$ and $K^2=7$. We focus on the classification of the birational models of the quotient surfaces and their branch divisors induced by an involution.
We give an explicit description of the Godeaux surfaces that admit an involution such that the quotient surface is birational to an Enriques surface; these surfaces give a 6-dimensional unirational irreducible subset of the moduli space of surfaces of general type. In addition, we describe the Enriques surfaces that are birational to the quotient of a Godeaux surface by an involution and we show that they give a 5-dimensional unirational irreducible subset of the moduli space of Enriques surfaces. Finally, by degenerating our description we obtain some examples of non-normal stable Godeaux sur…
Let $S$ be a smooth projective surface with $p_g=0$, let $ι$ be a regular involution acting on $S$, and let $W$ be the resolution of singularities of the quotient surface $S/ι$. In the paper we prove that Bloch's conjecture holds for the surface $S$ if and only if it holds for the surface $W$. This yields Bloch's conjecture for all surfaces $S$ whenever the same conjecture is true for the desingularized quotient $W$. In particular, Bloch's conjecture holds true for all numerical Godeaux surfaces with involutions, a "half" of Campedelli surfaces with involutions, the surface of Craighero and Ga…
In this paper some numerical restrictions for surfaces with an involution are obtained. These formulas are used to study surfaces of general type $S$ with $p_g=q=1$ having an involution $i$ such that $S/i$ is a non-ruled surface and such that the bicanonical map of $S$ is not composed with $i.$ A complete list of possibilities is given and several new examples are constructed, as bidouble covers of surfaces. In particular the first example of a minimal surface of general type with $p_g=q=1$ and $K^2=7$ having birational bicanonical map is obtained.
K3-surfaces with antisymplectic involution and compatible symplectic actions of finite groups are considered. In this situation actions of large finite groups of symplectic transformations are shown to arise via double covers of Del Pezzo surfaces. A complete classification of K3-surfaces with maximal symplectic symmetry is obtained.
We investigate the interplay between the moduli spaces of ample <2>-polarized IHS manifolds of type K3^[2] and of IHS manifolds of type K3^[2] with a nonsymplectic involution with invariant lattice of rank one. In particular we geometrically describe some new involutions of the Hilbert square of a K3 surface, whose existence was proven in a previous work of Boissiere, Cattaneo, Nieper-Wisskirchen and Sarti.
We study the pencils of minimal degree on the smooth curves lying on a K3 surface X which carries a fixed-point free involution. Generically, the gonality of these curves is totally governed by the genus 1 fibrations of X
We provide an algorithm for detecting the involutions leaving a surface defined by a polynomial parametrization invariant. As a consequence, the symmetry axes, symmetry planes and symmetry center of the surface, if any, can be determined directly from the parametrization, without computing or making use of the implicit representation. The algorithm is based on the fact, proven in the paper, that any involution of the surface comes from an involution of the parameter space (the real plane, in our case); therefore, by determining the latter, the former can be found. The algorithm has been implem…
The three pencils of K3 surfaces of minimal discriminant whose general element covers at least one Enriques surface are Kondō's pencils I and II, and the Apéry--Fermi pencil. We enumerate and investigate all Enriques surfaces covered by their general elements.
Let X be a Hyperkähler variety deformation equivalent to the Hilbert square on a K3 surface and let f be an involution preserving the symplectic form. We prove that the fixed locus of f consists of 28 isolated points and 1 K3 surface, moreover the anti-invariant lattice of the induced involution on H^2(X,Z) is isomorphic to E_8(-2). Finally we prove that any couple consisting of one such variety and a symplectic involution on it can be deformed into a couple consisting of the Hilbert square of a K3 surface and the involution induced by a Nikulin involution on the K3 surface.
In this paper we complete the classification of the elliptic fibrations on K3 surfaces which admit a non-symplectic involution acting trivially on the Néron--Severi group. We use the geometric method introduced by Oguiso and moreover we provide a geometric construction of the fibrations classified. If the non-symplectic involution fixes at least one curve of genus 1, we relate all the elliptic fibrations on the K3 surface with either elliptic fibrations or generalized conic bundles on rational elliptic surfaces. This description allows us to write the Weierstrass equations of the elliptic fibr…
In this paper, we classify the minimal surfaces of general type with $χ=5$, $K^{2}=9$ whose canonical map is composed with an involution. We obtain 6 families, whose dimensions in the moduli space are 28, 27, 33, 32, 31 and 32 respectively. Among them, the family of surfaces having a genus 2 fibration forms an irreducible component of $\mathfrak{M}_{χ=5, K^{2}=9}$.
In this paper we construct a family of complex analytic manifolds that generalize Inoue surfaces and Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds. To a matrix $M$ in $SL(N,\mathbb{Z})$ satisfying some mild conditions on its characteristic polynomial we associate a manifold $T(M,\mathbf{D})$ (depending on an auxiliary parameter $\mathbf{D}$). This manifold fibers over the $s$-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^s$, where $s$ is the number of real eigenvalues of $M$. The fiber is the $N$-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^{N}$, and the monodromy matrices are certain polynomials of the matrix $M$. The basic difference of our …
Let X be a K3 surface with an involution g which has non-empty fixed locus X^g and acts non-trivially on a non-zero holomorphic 2-form. We shall construct all such pairs (X, g) in a canonical way, from some better known double coverings of log del Pezzo surfaces of index at most 2 or rational elliptic surfaces, and construct the only family of each of the three extremal cases where X^g contains 10 (maximum possible) curves. We also classify rational log Enriques surfaces of index 2. Our approach is more geometrical rather than lattice-theoretical (see Nikulin's paper for the latter approach).
We study surfaces of general type $S$ with $p_g=0$ and $K^2=3$ having an involution $i$ such that the bicanonical map of $S$ is not composed with $i$. It is shown that, if $S/i$ is not rational, then $S/i$ is birational to an Enriques surface or it has Kodaira dimension $1$ and the possibilities for the ramification divisor of the covering map $S\rightarrow S/i$ are described. We also show that these two cases do occur, providing an example. In this example $S$ has a hyperelliptic fibration of genus $3$ and the bicanonical map of $S$ is of degree $2$ onto a rational surface.
Classification of real K3 surfaces X with a non-symplectic involution τis considered. For some exactly defined and one of the weakest possible type of degeneration (giving the very reach discriminant), we show that the connected component of their moduli is defined by the isomorphism class of the action of τand the anti-holomorphic involution ϕin the homology lattice. (There are very few similar cases known.) For their classification we apply invariants of integral lattice involutions with conditions which were developed by the first author in 1983. As a particular case, we describe connected …
In this paper we classify completely all regular minimal surfaces with K^2=8, p_g=4 whose canonical map is composed with an involution. We obtain six unirational families of respective dimensions 28,28,32,33,38,34. The last two are irreducible components of the moduli space of minimal surfaces with K^2=8, p_g=4. These families hit three different topological types.
A holomorphic torsion invariant of K3 surfaces with involution was introduced by the second-named author. In this paper, we completely determine its structure as an automorphic function on the moduli space of such K3 surfaces. On every component of the moduli space, it is expressed as the product of an explicit Borcherds lift and a classical Siegel modular form. We also introduce its twisted version. We prove its modularity and a certain uniqueness of the modular form corresponding to the twisted holomorphic torsion invariant. This is used to study an equivariant analogue of Borcherds' conject…
Let X be a holomorphic symplectic fourfold such that b_2=23 and i a symplectic involution of X . The fixed locus F of i is a smooth symplectic submanifold of X; we show that F contains at least 12 isolated points and 1 smooth surface. We conjecture that F is made of 28 isolated fixed points and 1 K3 surface and we provide evidences for the conjecture in some examples, as the Hilbert scheme of a K3 surface, the Fano variety of a cubic in P^5 and the double cover of an EPW sextic.
Let $S$ be an intermediate Kato surface, $D$ the divisor consisting of all rational curves of $S$, $\widetilde{S}$ the universal covering of $S$ and $\widetilde{D}$ the preimage of $D$ in $\widetilde{S}$. We prove two results about the surface $\widetilde{S}\setminus \widetilde{D}$: it is Stein (which was already known when $S$ is either a Enoki or a Inoue-Hirzebruch surface) and we give a necessary and sufficient condition so that its holomorphic tangent bundle is holomorphically trivialisable. ----- Soient $S$ une surface de Kato intermédiaire, $D$ le diviseur formé des courbes rationnelles …
