We define the weak-normalization and the seminormalization of a real algebraic variety relative to its central locus. The study is related to the properties of the rings of continuous rational functions and hereditarily rational functions on real algebraic varieties. We provide in particular several characterizations (algebraic or geometric) of these varieties, and provide a full description of centrally seminormal curves.
The Folium of Descartes in $\mathbb{K}\times\mathbb{K}$ carries group laws, defined entirely in terms of algebraic operations over the field $\mathbb{K}$. The problems discussed in this paper include: normalization of Descartes Folium, group laws and morphisms, exotic structures, exotic structures, second exotic structure, some topologies on Descartes Folium, differential structure on Descartes Folium, first isomorphism of algebraic Lie groups over $\mathbb{K}$, second isomorphism of algebraic Lie groups over $\mathbb{K}$, derived structures of algebraic Lie groups, a differential/complex anal…
We investigate conditions for "simultaneous normalizability" of a family of reduced schemes, i.e., the normalization of the total space normalizes, fiber by fiber, each member of the family. The main result (under more general conditions) is that a flat family of reduced equidimensional projective complex varieties X_y with parameter y ranging over a normal space--algebraic or analytic--admits a simultaneous normalization if and only if the Hilbert polynomial of the integral closure of the structure sheaf O_{X_y} is locally independent of y. When the X_y are curves projectivity is not needed, …
If $X$ is Frobenius split, then so is its normalization and we explore conditions which imply the converse. To do this, we recall that given an $\mathcal{O}_X$-linear map $ϕ: F_* \mathcal{O}_X \to \mathcal{O}_X$, it always extends to a map $\barϕ$ on the normalization of $X$. In this paper, we study when the surjectivity of $\barϕ$ implies the surjectivity of $ϕ$. While this doesn't occur generally, we show it always happens if certain tameness conditions are satisfied for the normalization map. Our result has geometric consequences including a connection between $F$-pure singularities and sem…
Let G be a simply connected semisimple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic 0 and let V be a rational simple G-module of finite dimension. If G/H \subset P(V) is a spherical orbit and if X is its closure, then we describe the orbits of X and those of its normalization. If moreover the wonderful completion of G/H is strict, then we give necessary and sufficient combinatorial conditions so that the normalization morphism is a homeomorphism. Such conditions are trivially fulfilled if G is simply laced or if H is a symmetric subgroup.
The seminormalization of an algebraic variety $X$ is the biggest variety linked to $X$ by a finite, birational and bijective morphism. In this paper we introduce a variant of the seminormalization, suited for real algebraic varieties, called the R-seminormalization. This object have a universal property of the same kind of the one of the seminormalization but related to the real closed points of the variety. In a previous paper, the author studied the seminormalization of complex algebraic varieties using rational functions that extend continuously to the closed points for the Euclidean topolo…
The tropical semifield, i.e., the real numbers enhanced by the operations of addition and maximum, serves as a base of tropical mathematics. Addition is an abelian group operation, whereas the maximum defines an idempotent semigroup structure. We address the question of the geometry of idempotent semigroups, in particular, tropical algebraic sets carrying the structure of a commutative idempotent semigroup. We show that commutative idempotent semigroups are contractible, that systems of tropical polynomials, formed from univariate monomials, define subsemigroups with respect to coordinate-wise…
We consider a semi-algebraic function defined on a closed semi-algebraic set X. We give formulas relating the topology of X to the indices of the critical points of the function and to the topological behavior of the function at infinity. We give applications when X is R^n and when the function is linear.
We show that the weight 0 part of the first cohomology of a complex algebraic variety $X$ is a topological invariant, and give an explicit description of its dimension using a topological construction of the normalization of $X$, where $X$ can be reducible, but must be equidimensional. The first assertion is known in the $X$ compact case by A. Weber, where intersection cohomology is used. Note that the weight 1 or 2 part of the first cohomology is not a topological (or even analytic) invariant in the non-compact case by Serre's example.
We define a category of motives for semi-algebraic spaces and show that it is trivial. This implies that there is no good extension of algebraic de Rham cohomology to semi-algebraic spaces compatible with the period isomorphism.
Given a closed semi-algebraic set $X \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ and a continuous semi-algebraic mapping $G \colon X \to \mathbb{R}^m,$ it will be shown that there exists an open dense semi-algebraic subset $\mathscr{U}$ of $L(\mathbb{R}^n, \mathbb{R}^m),$ the space of all linear mappings from $\mathbb{R}^n$ to $\mathbb{R}^m,$ such that for all $F \in \mathscr{U},$ the image $(F + G)(X)$ is a closed (semi-algebraic) set in $\mathbb{R}^m.$ To do this, we study the tangent cone at infinity $C_\infty X$ and the set $E_\infty X \subset C_\infty X$ of (unit) exceptional directions at infinity of $X.$ Spe…
Let X be an affine real algebraic set . We investigate on the theory of algebraically constructible functions on X and the description of the semi-algebraic subsets of X when we replace the polynomial functions on X by some rational continuous functions on X.
We study families of faces for convex semi-algebraic sets via the normal cycle which is a semi-algebraic set similar to the conormal variety in projective duality theory. We propose a convex algebraic notion of a "patch" -- a term recently coined by Ciripoi, Kaihnsa, Löhne, and Sturmfels as a tool for approximating the convex hull of a semi-algebraic set. We discuss geometric consequences, both for the semi-algebraic and convex geometry of the families of faces, as well as variations of our definition and their consequences.
We prove a moving lemma which implies the contravariance of Bloch-Esnault's additive higher Chow group in smooth affine varieties and Binda-Saito's higher Chow group (taken in the Nisnevich topology) in smooth varieties equipped with effective Cartier divisors. The new ingredients in the moving method are parallel translation {\em with modulus} in the affine space that involves a new integer parameter, and Noether's normalization lemma over a Dedekind base.
We study the algebraic boundary of a convex semi-algebraic set via duality in convex and algebraic geometry. We generalize the correspondence of facets of a polytope to the vertices of the dual polytope to general semi-algebraic convex bodies. In the general setup, exceptional families of extreme points might exist and we characterize them semi-algebraically. We also give an algorithm to compute a complete list of exceptional families, given the algebraic boundary of the dual convex set.
We develop the theory of central ideals on commutative rings. We introduce and study the central seminormalization of a ring in another one. This seminormalization is related to the theory of regulous functions on real algebraic varieties. We provide a construction of the central seminormalization by a decomposition theorem in elementary central gluings. The existence of a central seminormalization is established in the affine case and for real schemes.
In this review we discuss what is known about semiorthogonal decompositions of derived categories of algebraic varieties. We review existing constructions, especially the homological projective duality approach, and discuss some related issues such as categorical resolutions of singularities.
In this work we study some algebraic and topological properties of the ring ${\mathcal O}(X^ν)$ of global analytic functions of the normalization $(X^ν,{\mathcal O}_{X^ν})$ of a reduced complex analytic space $(X,{\mathcal O}_X)$. If $(X,{\mathcal O}_X)$ is a Stein space, we characterize ${\mathcal O}(X^ν)$ in terms of the (topological) completion of the integral closure $\overline{{\mathcal O}(X)}^ν$ of the ring ${\mathcal O}(X)$ of global holomorphic functions on $X$ (inside its total ring of fractions) with respect to the usual Fréchet topology of $\overline{{\mathcal O}(X)}^ν$. This shows …
Real algebraic geometry is the study of semi-algebraic sets, subsets of $\R^k$ defined by Boolean combinations of polynomial equalities and inequalities. The focus of this thesis is to study quantitative results in real algebraic geometry, primarily upper bounds on the topological complexity of semi-algebraic sets as measured, for example, by their Betti numbers. Another quantitative measure of topological complexity which we study is the number of homotopy types of semi-algebraic sets of bounded description complexity. The description complexity of a semi-algebraic set depends on the context,…
This paper concerns an analytical stratification question of real algebraic and semi-algebraic sets. For Whitney's stratification in 1957, it partitions a real algebraic set into partial algebraic manifolds\cite{W}. In 1975 Hironaka reproved that a real algebraic set is triangulable and also generalized it to semi-algebraic sets, following the idea of Lojasiewicz's triangulation of semi-analytic sets in 1964. Following their examples and wondering how geometry looks like locally. this paper tries to come up with a stratification, in particular a cell decomposition, such that it satisfies the f…
We show that in a certain subfamily of the Kuranishi family of any half Inoue surface the algebraic dimensions of the fibers jump downwards at special points of the parameter space showing that the upper semi-continuity of algebraic dimensions in any sense does not hold in general for families of compact non-Kaehler manifolds. In the Kaehler case, the upper semi-continuity always holds true in a certain weak sense.
Given any arbitrary semi-algebraic set $X$, any two points in $X$ may be joined by a piecewise $C^2$ path $γ$ of shortest length. Suppose $\mathcal{A}$ is a semi-algebraic stratification of $X$ such that each component of $γ\cap \mathcal{A}$ is either a singleton or a real analytic geodesic segment in $\mathcal{A}$, the question is whether $γ\cap \mathcal{A}$ has at most finitely many such components. This paper gives a semi-algebraic stratification, in particular a cell decomposition, of a real semi-algebraic set in the plane whose open cells have this finiteness property. This provides insig…
Using only basic topological properties of real algebraic sets and regular morphisms we show that any injective regular self-mapping of a real algebraic set is surjective. Then we show that injective morphisms between germs of real algebraic sets define a partial order on the equivalence classes of these germs divided by continuous semi-algebraic homeomorphisms. We use this observation to deduce that any injective regular self-mapping of a real algebraic set is a homeomorphism. We show also a similar local property. All our results can be extended to arc-symmetric semi-algebraic sets and injec…
Let $\mathrm{R}$ be a real closed field and $\mathrm{C}$ the algebraic closure of $\mathrm{R}$. We give an algorithm for computing a semi-algebraic basis for the first homology group, $\mathrm{H}_1(S,\mathbb{F})$, with coefficients in a field $\mathbb{F}$, of any given semi-algebraic set $S \subset \mathrm{R}^k$ defined by a closed formula. The complexity of the algorithm is bounded singly exponentially. It is not known how to compute such a basis for the higher homology groups with singly exponential complexity. As an intermediate step in our algorithm we construct a semi-algebraic subset $Γ$…
We deal with equations over free semilattice of infinite rank and prove that any infinite consistent system of equations is equivalent to its finite subsystem. Moreover, we describe irreducible algebraic sets and solve some algorithmic problems.
Given a polynomial $f$ and a semi-algebraic set $S$, we provide a symbolic algorithm to find the equations and inequalities defining a semi-algebraic set $Q$ which is identical to the closure of the image of $S$ under $f$, i.e., \begin{equation} Q=\overline{f(S)}\,. \end{equation} Consequently, every polynomial optimization problem whose optimum value is finite has an equivalent form with attained optimum value, i.e., \begin{equation} \min \limits_{t\in Q} t =\inf\limits_{x\in S} f(x) \end{equation} whenever the right-hand side is finite. Given $d$ as the upper bound on the degrees of $f$ and …
Using some relative codimension 1 cycle-space method, we give, following the ideas of D. Popovici [P.13], semicontinuity results for the algebraic dimension in a family a compact complex manifolds parametrized by a disc.
This paper is about the logarithmic limit sets of real semi-algebraic sets, and, more generally, about the logarithmic limit sets of sets definable in an o-minimal, polynomially bounded structure. We prove that most of the properties of the logarithmic limit sets of complex algebraic sets hold in the real case. This include the polyhedral structure and the relation with the theory of non-archimedean fields, tropical geometry and Maslov dequantization.
In this paper we describe a singly exponential algorithm for computing the first Betti number of a given semi-algebraic set. Singly exponential algorithms for computing the zero-th Betti number, and the Euler-Poincaré characteristic, were known before. No singly exponential algorithm was known for computing any of the individual Betti numbers other than the zero-th one. We also give algorithms for obtaining semi-algebraic descriptions of the semi-algebraically connected components of any given real algebraic or semi-algebraic set in single-exponential time improving on previous results.
We complete the details of a theory outlined by Kontsevich and Soibelman that associates to a semi-algebraic set a certain graded commutative differential algebra of "semi-algebraic differential forms" in a functorial way. This algebra encodes the real homotopy type of the semi-algebraic set in the spirit of the DeRham algebra of differential forms on a smooth manifold. Its development is needed for Kontsevich's proof of the formality of the little cubes operad.
We prove that the wreath product $C=A wr B$ of a semigroup $A$ with zero and an infinite cyclic semigroup $B$ is $q_ω$-compact (logically Noetherian). Our result partially solves the Plotkin`s problem about wreath products
Cryo-electron microscopy is a technique in structural biology for discovering/determining the 3D structure of small molecules. A key step in this process is detecting common lines of intersection between unknown embedded image planes. We intrinsically characterize such common lines in terms of the unembedded geometric data detected in experiments. We show these common lines form a semi-algebraic set, i.e., they are defined by polynomial equalities and inequalities. These polynomials are low degree and, using techniques from spherical geometry, we explicitly derive them in this paper.
We prove Manin's conjecture concerning the distribution of rational points of bounded height, and its refinement by Peyre, for wonderful compactifications of semi-simple algebraic groups over number fields. The proof proceeds via the study of the associated height zeta function and its spectral expansion.
Let $\langle K,ν\rangle$ be a real closed valued field, and let $S\subseteq K^n$ be an open semi-algebraic set. Using tools from model theory, we find an algebraic characterization of rational functions which admit, on $S$, only values in the valuation ring. We use this result to deduce a criterion for a rational function to be bounded on an open semi algebraic subset of some irreducible variety over a real closed field or over an ordered field which is dense in its real closure.
We classify semi-algebraic surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with isolated singularities up to bi-Lipschitz homeomorphisms with respect to the inner distance. In particular, we obtain complete classifications for the Nash surfaces and the complex algebraic curves. We also address the minimal surfaces with finite total curvature.
Developing an algorithm for computing the Betti numbers of semi-algebraic sets with singly exponential complexity has been a holy grail in algorithmic semi-algebraic geometry and only partial results are known. In this paper we consider the more general problem of computing the image under the homology functor of a semi-algebraic map $f:X \rightarrow Y$ between closed and bounded semi-algebraic sets. For every fixed $\ell \geq 0$ we give an algorithm with singly exponential complexity that computes bases of the homology groups $\mathrm{H}_i(X), \mathrm{H}_i(Y)$ (with rational coefficients) and…
It was already known that a p-adic, locally Lipschitz continuous semi-algebraic function is piecewise Lipschitz continuous, where the pieces can be taken semi-algebraic. We prove that if the function has locally Lipschitz constant 1, then it is also piecewise Lipschitz continuous with the same Lipschitz constant 1. We do this by proving the following fine preparation results for p-adic semi-algebraic functions in one variable. Any such function can be well approximated by a monomial with fractional exponent such that moreover the derivative of the monomial is an approximation of the derivative…
In this short Note we show that the direct image sheaf R 1 $π$ * (O X) associated to an analytic family of compact complex manifolds $π$ : X $\rightarrow$ S parametrized by a reduced complex space S is a locally free (coherent) sheaf of O S --modules. This result allows to improve a semi-continuity type result for the algebraic dimension of compact complex manifolds in an analytic family given in [B.15]. AMS Classification 2010. 32G05-32A20-32J10.
We describe an explicit semi-algebraic partition for the complement of a real hyperplane arrangement such that each piece is contractible and so that the pieces form a basis of Borel-Moore homology. We also give an explicit correspondence between the de Rham cohomology and the Borel-Moore homology.
In this paper we compute the order (or Feng-Rao) bound on the minimum distance of one-point algebraic geometry codes, when the Weierstrass semigroup at the point Q is an Arf semigroup. The results developed to that purpose also provide the dimension of the improved geometric Goppa codes related to those.
In this paper consisting of two parts, we study the integral of a logarithmic differential form on a compact semi-algebraic set in R^n or C^n. In Part I, we prove the convergence of the integral when the semi-algebraic set satisfies allowability (or admissibility), a condition on the dimension of the intersection of the set and the pole divisor of the differential form.
A criterion for a functor between derived categories of coherent sheaves to be full and faithful is given. A semiorthogonal decomposition for the derived category of coherent sheaves on the intersection of two even dimensional quadrics is obtained. The behaviour of derived categories with respect to birational transformations is investigated. A theorem about reconstruction of a variety from the derived category of coherent sheaves is proved.
Let $G$ be a semiabelian variety and $C$ a curve in $G$ that is not contained in a proper algebraic subgroup of $G$. In this situation, conjectures of Pink and Zilber imply that there are at most finitely many points contained in the so-called unlikely intersections of $C$ with subgroups of codimension at least $2$. In this note, we establish this assertion for general semiabelian varieties over $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$. This extends results of Maurin and Bombieri, Habegger, Masser, and Zannier in the toric case as well as Habegger and Pila in the abelian case.
We give a survey of algorithms for computing topological invariants of semi-algebraic sets with special emphasis on the more recent developments in designing algorithms for computing the Betti numbers of semi-algebraic sets. Aside from describing these results, we discuss briefly the background as well as the importance of these problems, and also describe the main tools from algorithmic semi-algebraic geometry, as well as algebraic topology, which make these advances possible. We end with a list of open problems.
In this paper we deal with a best approximation of a vector with respect to a closed semi-algebraic set $C$ in the space $\mathbb{R}^n$ endowed with a semi-algebraic norm $ν$. Under additional assumptions on $ν$ we prove semi-algebraicity of the set of points of unique approximation and other sets associated with the distance to $C$. For $C$ irreducible algebraic we study the critical point correspondence and introduce the $ν$- distance degree, generalizing the notion appearing in \cite{DHOST} for the Euclidean norm. We discuss separately the case of the $\ell^p$ norm ($p>1$).
In this thesis, we consider semi-algebraic sets over a real closed field $R$ defined by quadratic polynomials. Semi-algebraic sets of $R^k$ are defined as the smallest family of sets in $R^k$ that contains the algebraic sets as well as the sets defined by polynomial inequalities, and which is also closed under the boolean operations (complementation, finite unions and finite intersections). We prove new bounds on the Betti numbers as well as on the number of different stable homotopy types of certain fibers of semi-algebraic sets over a real closed field $R$ defined by quadratic polynomials, i…
We prove that the number of distinct homotopy types of limits of one-parameter semi-algebraic families of closed and bounded semi-algebraic sets is bounded singly exponentially in the additive complexity of any quantifier-free first order formula defining the family. As an important consequence, we derive that the number of distinct homotopy types of semi-algebraic subsets of $\mathbb{R}^k$ defined by a quantifier-free first order formula $Φ$, where the sum of the additive complexities of the polynomials appearing in $Φ$ is at most $a$, is bounded by $2^{(k+a)^{O(1)}}$. This proves a conjectur…
Let $\mathrm{R}$ be a real closed field. The problem of obtaining tight bounds on the Betti numbers of semi-algebraic subsets of $\mathrm{R}^k$ in terms of the number and degrees of the defining polynomials has been an important problem in real algebraic geometry with the first results due to Ole{\uı}nik and Petrovski{\uı}, Thom and Milnor. These bounds are all exponential in the number of variables $k$. Motivated by several applications in real algebraic geometry, as well as in theoretical computer science, where such bounds have found applications, we consider in this paper the problem of bo…
