By using first-principles electronic structure calculations, we predict that the extreme magnetoresistance (XMR) material LaSb takes a topological phase transition without breaking any symmetry under a hydrostatic pressure applied between 3 and 4 GPa, meanwhile the electron-hole compensation remains in its electronic band structure. Thus LaSb provides an ideal platform for studying the individual role of topological property playing in the XMR phenomenon, in addition to the electron-hole compensation. This has general implication to the relationship of XMR effect and topological property in topological materials.
We perform \textit{ab initio} investigations of the bulk and surface band structures of LaSb and LaBi and resolve the existing disagreements about the topological property of LaSb, considering LaBi as a reference. We examine the bulk band structure for band inversion, along with the stability of surface Dirac cones (if any) to time-reversal-preserving perturbations, as a strong diagnostic test for determining the topological character of LaSb, LaBi and LaSb-LaBi multilayer. A detailed \textit{ab initio} investigation of a multilayer consisting of alternating unit cells of LaSb and LaBi shows t…
Unconventional fermions in the immensely studied topological semimetals are the source for rich exotic topological properties. Here, using symmetry analysis and first-principles calculations, we propose the coexistence of multiple topological nodal structure in LaSb2, including topological nodal surfaces, nodal lines and in particular eightfold degenerate nodal points, which have been scarcely observed in a single material. Further, utilizing high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in combination with Shubnikov-de Haas quantum oscillations measurements, we confirm the existen…
The nodal line semimetals have attracted much attention due to their unique topological electronic structure and exotic physical properties. A genuine nodal line semimetal is qualified by the presence of Dirac nodes along a line in the momentum space that are protected against the spin-orbit coupling. In addition, it requires that the Dirac points lie close to the Fermi level allowing to dictate the macroscopic physical properties. Although the material realization of nodal line semimetals have been theoretically predicted in numerous compounds, only a few of them have been experimentally veri…
We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) of LaSb and CeSb, a candidate of topological insulator. Using soft-x-ray photons, we have accurately determined the three-dimensional bulk band structure and revealed that the band inversion at the Brillouin-zone corner - a prerequisite for realizing topological-insulator phase - is absent in both LaSb and CeSb. Moreover, unlike the ARPES data obtained with soft-x-ray photons, those with vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photons were found to suffer significant $k_z$ broadening. These results suggest that LaSb and CeSb are topologicall…
By the first-principles electronic structure calculations, we have systematically studied the electronic structures of recently discovered extremely large magnetoresistance (XMR) materials LaSb and LaBi. We find that both LaSb and LaBi are semimetals with the electron and hole carriers in perfect balance. The calculated carrier densities in the order of $10^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$ are in good agreement with the experimental values, implying long mean free time of carriers and thus high carrier mobilities. With a semiclassical two-band model, the perfect charge compensation and high carrier mobilities …
The family of binary Lanthanum monopnictides, LaBi and LaSb, have attracted a great deal of attention as they display an unusual extreme magnetoresistance (XMR) that is not well understood. Two classes of explanations have been raised for this: the presence of non-trivial topology, and the compensation between electron and hole densities. Here, by synthesizing a new member of the family, LaAs, and performing transport measurements, Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES), and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, we show that (a) LaAs retains all qualitative features characte…
The recent discovery of extreme magnetoresistance in LaSb introduced lanthanum monopnictides as a new platform to study topological semimetals (TSMs). In this work we report the discovery of extreme magnetoresistance in LaBi, confirming lanthanum monopnictides as a promising family of TSMs. These binary compounds with the simple rock-salt structure are ideal model systems to search for the origin of extreme magnetoresistance. Through a comparative study of magnetotransport effects in LaBi and LaSb, we construct a triangular temperature-field phase diagram that illustrates how a magnetic field …
We report investigations on the magnetotransport in LaSb, which exhibits extremely large magnetoresistance (XMR). Foremost, we demonstrate that the resistivity plateau can be explained without invoking topological protection. We then determine the Fermi surface from Shubnikov - de Haas (SdH) quantum oscillation measurements and find good agreement with the bulk Fermi pockets derived from first principle calculations. Using a semiclassical theory and the experimentally determined Fermi pocket anisotropies, we quantitatively describe the orbital magnetoresistance, including its angle dependence.…
Extremely high magnetoresistance (XMR) in the lanthanum monopnictides La$X$ ($X$ = Sb, Bi) has recently attracted interest in these compounds as candidate topological materials. However, their perfect electron-hole compensation provides an alternative explanation, so the possible role of topological surface states requires verification through direct observation. Our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data reveal multiple Dirac-like surface states near the Fermi level in both materials. Intriguingly, we have observed circular dichroism in both surface and near-surface bulk bands…
The combination of magneto-transport and topological properties has brought great attention to rare-earth mono-pnictides semimetals. For some of them, like LaSb, it is unclear whether they show non-trivial topology or not based on density functional theory calculations and angular resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements. Here, we use hybrid density functional theory to demonstrate that LaSb is in fact a trivial topological semimetal, in agreement with experiments, but on the verge of a transition to a topological phase. We show that under compressive epitaxial strain, the La $d$ band …
By combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and quantum oscillation measurements, we performed a comprehensive investigation on the electronic structure of LaSb, which exhibits near-quadratic extremely large magnetoresistance (XMR) without any sign of saturation at magnetic fields as high as 40 T. We clearly resolve one spherical and one intersecting-ellipsoidal hole Fermi surfaces (FSs) at the Brillouin zone (BZ) center $Γ$ and one ellipsoidal electron FS at the BZ boundary $X$. The hole and electron carriers calculated from the enclosed FS volumes are perfectly compensated, and th…
LaBi is a three-dimensional rocksalt-type material with a surprisingly quasi-two-dimensional electronic structure. It exhibits excellent electronic properties such as the existence of nontrivial Dirac cones, extremely large magnetoresistance, and high charge-carrier mobility. The cigar-shaped electron valleys make the charge transport highly anisotropic when the magnetic field is varied from one crystallographic axis to another. We show that the electrons can be polarized effectively in these electron valleys under a rotating magnetic field. We achieved a polarization of 60% at 2 K despite the…
By employing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy combined with first-principles calculations, we performed a systematic investigation on the electronic structure of LaBi, which exhibits extremely large magnetoresistance (XMR), and is theoretically predicted to possess band anticrossing with nontrivial topological properties. Here, the observations of the Fermi-surface topology and band dispersions are similar to previous studies on LaSb [Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 127204 (2016)], a topologically trivial XMR semimetal, except the existence of a band inversion along the $Γ$-$X$ direction, with …
While pyrite-type PtBi2 with face-centered cubic structure has been predicted to be a three-dimensional (3D) Dirac semimetal, experimental study on its physical properties remains absent. Here we report the angular-dependent magnetoresistance (MR) measurements of PtBi2 single-crystal under high magnetic fields. We observed extreme large unsaturated magnetoresistance (XMR) up to 11.2 million percent at T = 1.8 K in a magnetic field of 33 T, which surpasses the previously reported Dirac materials, such as WTe2, LaSb and NbP. The crystals exhibit an ultrahigh mobility and significant Shubnikov-de…
In this article, we report emergence of topological phase in XMR material TmSb under hydrostatic pressure using first principles calculations. We find that TmSb, a topologically trivial semimetal, undergoes a topological phase transition with band inversion at X point without breaking any symmetry under a hydrostatic pressure of 12 GPa. At 15 GPa, it again becomes topologically trivial with band inversion at $Γ$ as well as X point. We find that the pressures corresponding to the topological phase transitions are far below the pressure corresponding to structural phase transition at 25.5 GPa. T…
Recent progress in understanding the electronic band topology and emergent topological properties encourage us to reconsider the band structure of well-known materials including elemental substances. Controlling such a band topology by external field is of particular interest from both fundamental and technological view point. Here we report the pressure-induced topological phase transition from a semiconductor to a Weyl semimetal in elemental tellurium probed by transport measurements. Pressure variation of the periods of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations, as well as oscillations phases, shows a…
Topological semimetals generally contain heavy elements. Using density-functional theoretic calculations, we predict that three dense lithium polymorphs in the pressure range 200--360 GPa display nontrivial semimetallic electronic structure. Specifically, these high-pressure phases exhibit Fermi pockets which are degenerate over a loop in $\boldsymbol{k}$-space, around which an encircling $\bm k$-space path is threaded by $\pm π$ Berry phase. Accordingly, these dense lithium phases are topological nodal loop semimetals involving a single light element.
We performed X-ray diffraction and electrical resistivity measurement up to pressures of 5 GPa and the first-principles calculations utilizing experimental structural parameters to investigate the pressure-induced topological phase transition in BiTeBr having a noncentrosymmetric layered structure (space group P3m1). The P3m1 structure remains stable up to pressures of 5 GPa; the ratio of lattice constants, c/a, has a minimum at pressures of 2.5 - 3 GPa. In the same range, the temperature dependence of resistivity changes from metallic to semiconducting at 3 GPa and has a plateau region betwee…
The application of pressure has been demonstrated to induce intriguing phase transitions in topological nodal-line semimetals. In this work we analyze how uniaxial pressure affects the topological character of BaSn2 , a Dirac nodal-line semimetal in the absence of spin-orbit coupling. Using calculations based on the density functional theory and a model tight-binding Hamiltonian, we find the emergence of a second nodal line for pressures higher than 4 GPa. We examine the topological features of both phases demonstrating that a nontrivial character is present in both of them. Thus, providing ev…
Rare-earth monopnictides are predicted to be nontrivial semimetal candidates and show pressure-induced superconductivity. Here, we grow LuBi single crystal and study the magnetization, transport behaviors and electronic band structures to reveal its topological semimetal feature and superconductivity under pressure. At 0 GPa, the quantum oscillations indicate that there are several topologically nontrivial carrier pockets around the Fermi level, among which the hole ones are isotropic in shape, while the electron ones are anisotropic and responsible for the angular magnetoresistance. Upon comp…
The co-occurrence of phase transitions with local and global order parameters, such as the entangled magnetization and topological invariant, is attractive but has been seldom realized experimentally. Here, by using high-pressure in-situ X-ray diffraction, high-pressure electric transport measurements and high-pressure first-principles calculations, we report a magneto-topological phase transition, i.e., the phenomenon of magnetic materials undergoing different magnetic and topological phases during the process of pressure loading, in a recently discovered magnetic Weyl semimetal Co3Sn2S2. By …
Topological quantum phase transitions (TQPTs) in a material induced by external perturbations are often characterized by band touching points in the Brillouin zone. The low-energy excitations near the degenerate band touching points host different types of fermions while preserving the topological protection of surface states. An interplay of different tunable topological phases offers an insight into the evolution of the topological character. In this paper, we study the occurrence of TQPTs as a function of hydrostatic pressure in CdGeSb$_2$ and CdSnSb$_2$ chalcopyrites, using the first-princ…
Lithium, a prototypical simple metal under ambient conditions, has a surprisingly rich phase diagram under pressure, taking up several structures with reduced symmetry, low coordination numbers, and even semiconducting character with increasing density. Using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that some predicted high-pressure phases of elemental Li also host topological electronic structures. Beginning at 80 GPa and coincident with a transition to the Pbca phase, we find Li to be a Dirac nodal line semimetal. We further calculate that Li retains linearly-dispersive energy bands in …
In this article, we study non-trivial topological phase and electron-hole compensation in extremely large magnetoresistance (XMR) material YSb under hydrostatic pressure using first-principles calculations. YSb is topologically trivial at ambient pressure, but undergoes a reentrant topological phase transition under hydrostatic pressure. The reentrant behavior of topological quantum phase is then studied as a function of charge density ratio under pressure. From the detailed investigation of Fermi surfaces, it is found that electron to hole densities ratio increases with pressure, however a no…
In recent years, a low pressure transition around P $\sim$ 3 GPa exhibited by the A$_2$B$_3$-type 3D topological insulators is attributed to an electronic topological transition (ETT) for which there is no direct evidence either from theory or experiments. We address this phase transition and other transitions at higher pressure in bismuth selenide (Bi$_2$Se$_3$) using Raman spectroscopy at pressure upto 26.2 GPa. We see clear Raman signatures of an isostructural phase transition at P $\sim$ 2.4 GPa followed by structural transitions at $\sim$ 10 GPa and 16 GPa. First-principles calculations r…
Perovskite structure is one of the five symmetry families suitable for exhibiting topological insulator phase. However, none of the halides and oxides stabilizing in this structure exhibit the same. Through density functional calculations on cubic perovskites (CsSnX$_3$ ; X = Cl, Br, and I), we predict a band insulator -- Dirac semimetal -- topological insulator phase transition with uniform compression. With the aid of a Slater-Koster tight binding Hamiltonian, we show that, apart from the valence electron count, the band topology of these perovksites is determined by five parameters involvin…
Bi$_2$Se$_3$, a layered three dimensional (3D) material, exhibits topological insulating properties due to presence of surface states and a band gap of 0.3 eV in the bulk. We study the effect hydrostatic pressure $P$ and doping with rare earth elements on the topological aspect of this material in bulk from a first principles perspective. Our study shows that under a moderate pressure of P$>$7.9 GPa, the bulk electronic properties show a transition from an insulating to a Weyl semi-metal state due to band inversion. This electronic topological transition may be correlated to a structural chang…
Two pressure-induced phase transitions have been theoretically studied in the layered iron phosphorus triselenide (FePSe3). Topological analysis of chemical bonding in FePSe3 has been performed based on the results of first-principles calculations within the periodic linear combination of atomic orbitals (LCAO) method with hybrid Hartree-Fock-DFT B3LYP functional. The first transition at about 6 GPa is accompanied by the symmetry change from R-3 to C2/m, whereas the semiconductor-to-metal transition (SMT) occurs at about 13 GPa leading to the symmetry change from C2/m to P-31m. We found that t…
It has recently been established that two-dimensional massless graphene-like systems and three-dimensional line-node topological semimetals comprise a special class of centrosymmetric materials where edge/surface states of topological nature inevitably appear in some k-regions. We show that the phases of solid hydrogen produced at megabar pressures can be line-node topological semimetals. In such phases, the material exhibits topological surface states and therefore can be a poor bulk metal but good surface conductor. The results may help to explain discrepant high-pressure experimental data r…
We report a series of high-pressure electrical transport, magnetic susceptibility, and x-ray diffraction measurements on single crystals of the weak topological insulator Bi2TeI and the topological metal Bi3TeI. Room temperature x-ray diffraction measurements show that both materials go through a series of pressure-induced structural transitions and eventually adopt a disordered bcc alloy structure at high pressure. A re-analysis of the published data on BiTeI indicates that this material also adopts a disordered bcc structure at high pressure, in contrast to the previously suggested P4/nmm st…
Recently, natural van der Waals heterostructures of (MnBi2Te4)m(Bi2Te3)n have been theoretically predicted and experimentally shown to host tunable magnetic properties and topologically nontrivial surface states. In this work, we systematically investigate both the structural and electronic responses of MnBi2Te4 and MnBi4Te7 to external pressure. In addition to the suppression of antiferromagnetic order, MnBi2Te4 is found to undergo a metal-semiconductor-metal transition upon compression. The resistivity of MnBi4Te7 changes dramatically under high pressure and a non-monotonic evolution of \r{h…
The coexistence of superconductivity and topology holds the potential to realize exotic quantum states of matter. Here we report that superconductivity induced by high pressure in three thallium-based materials, covering the phase transition from a normal insulator (TlBiS2) to a topological insulator (TlBiSe2) through a Dirac semimetal (TlBiSeS). By increasing the pressure up to 60 GPa, we observe superconductivity phase diagrams with maximal Tc values at 6.0-8.1 K. Our density-functional theory calculations reveal topological surface states in superconductivity phases for all three compounds.…
We investigated the superconducting properties of the topological superconductor $α$--PdBi$_2$ at ambient and external pressures up to 1.77~GPa using muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) experiments. The ambient pressure measurements evince a fully gapped $s$-wave superconducting state in the bulk of the specimen. AC magnetic susceptibility and $μ$SR measurements manifest a continuous suppression of $T_{\rm c}$ with increasing pressure. In parallel, we observed a significant decrease of superfluid density by $\sim$20\% upon application of external pressure. Remarkably, the superfluid density follows lin…
Recently, the natural heterostructure of (PbSe)5(Bi2Se3)6 has been theoretically predicted and experimentally confirmed as a topological insulator. In this work, we induce superconductivity in (PbSe)5(Bi2Se3)6 by implementing high pressure. As increasing pressure up to 10 GPa, superconductivity with Tc ~ 4.6 K suddenly appears, followed by an abrupt decrease. Remarkably, upon further compression above 30 GPa, a new superconducting state arises, where pressure raises the Tc to an unsaturated 6.0 K within the limit of our research. Combining XRD and Raman spectroscopies, we suggest that the emer…
We study the electronic and topological properties of fully relaxed twisted bilayer (TBG) and double bilayer (TDBG) graphene under perpendicular pressure. An approach has been proposed to obtain the equilibrium in-plane structural deformation and out-of-plane corrugation in moiré superlattices under pressure. We find that the in-plane relaxation becomes much stronger under higher pressure, while the corrugation height in each layer is maintained. The comparison between band structures of relaxed and rigid structures demonstrates that not only the gaps on the electron and hole sides ($Δ_e$ and …
Investigating the pressure dependence of the superconducting (SC) transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ is crucial for understanding the SC mechanism. Herein, we report on the pressure dependence of $T_{\rm c}$ in the nonmagnetic topological line-nodal material CaSb$_2$, based on measurements of electric resistance and alternating current magnetic susceptibility. $T_{\rm c}$ initially increases with increasing pressure and peaks at $\sim$ 3.1~GPa. With a further increase in pressure, $T_{\rm c}$ decreases and finally becomes undetectable at 5.9~GPa. Because no signs of phase transition or Lifshit…
The discovery of time-reversal-invariant topological states has drawn great attention in recent decades. However, despite the potential of displaying a variety of exotic physics, the study of magnetic topological phases lags behind due to underlying added complexity of magnetism. In this work, we predict the interplay of magnetism and topology in the non-centrosymmetric ternary manganese compound MnIn$_2$Te$_4$, using first-principles calculations. At ambient pressure, the ground state of the system is an antiferromagnetic insulator. With the application of small hydrostatic pressure ($\sim$0.…
