Investigating the pressure dependence of the superconducting (SC) transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ is crucial for understanding the SC mechanism. Herein, we report on the pressure dependence of $T_{\rm c}$ in the nonmagnetic topological line-nodal material CaSb$_2$, based on measurements of electric resistance and alternating current magnetic susceptibility. $T_{\rm c}$ initially increases with increasing pressure and peaks at $\sim$ 3.1~GPa. With a further increase in pressure, $T_{\rm c}$ decreases and finally becomes undetectable at 5.9~GPa. Because no signs of phase transition or Lifshitz transition are observed in the normal state, the peculiar peak structure of $T_{\rm c}$ suggests that CaSb$_2$ has an unconventional SC character.
We found superconductivity in CaSb$_2$ with the transition temperature of 1.7 K by means of electrical-resistivity, magnetic-susceptibility, and specific-heat measurements. This material crystallizes in a nonsymmorphic structure and is predicted to have multiple Dirac nodal lines in the bulk electronic band structure protected by symmetry even in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. We discuss a possible topological superconductivity for the quasi-2-dimensional band originating mainly from one of the antimony sites.
CaSb2 is a topological nodal-line semimetal that becomes superconducting below 1.6 K, providing an ideal platform to investigate the interplay between topologically nontrivial electronic bands and superconductivity. In this work, we investigated the superconducting order parameter of CaSb2 by measuring its magnetic penetration depth change Δλ(T) down to 0.07 K, using a tunneling diode oscillator (TDO) based technique. Well inside the superconducting state, Δλ(T) shows an exponential activated behavior, and provides direct evidence for a nodeless superconducting gap. By analyzing the temperatur…
We performed 121/123Sb-nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements on the superconducting (SC) line-nodal material CaSb2 in order to investigate electronic properties in the normal and SC states from a microscopic point of view. In the normal state, the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 for the Sb(1) site, which is responsible for the line-nodal parts, is approximately proportional to temperature, indicating the conventional Fermi liquid state. From comparison with band structure calculations, it is considered that the NQR properties related to the line-nodal character are hidden b…
We report on the Fermi surfaces and superconducting parameters of CaSb$_2$ single crystals (superconducting below $T_{\text{c}}\sim 1.8~\text{K}$) grown by the self-flux method. The frequency of de-Haas-van-Alphen and Shubnikov-de-Haas oscillations evidences a quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) Fermi surface, consistent with one of the Fermi surfaces forming Dirac lines predicted by first-principles calculations. Measurements in the superconducting state reveal that CaSb$_2$ is close to a type-I superconductor with the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) parameter of around unity. The temperature dependence of…
Bulk superconductivity in a topological semimetal is a first step towards realizing topological superconductors, which can host Majorana fermions allowing us to achieve quantum computing. Here, we report superconductivity and compensation of electrons and holes in single crystals of the nodal-line semimetal CaSb$_2$. We characterize the superconducting state and find that Cooper pairs have moderate-weak coupling, and the superconducting transition in specific heat down to 0.22 K deviates from that of a BCS superconductor. The non-saturating magnetoresistance and electron-hole compensation at l…
We performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with micro-focused beam on a topological line-nodal compound CaSb2 which undergoes a superconducting transition at the onset Tc~1.8 K, to clarify the Fermi-surface topology relevant to the occurrence of superconductivity. We found that a three-dimensional hole pocket at the G point is commonly seen for two types of single-crystalline samples fabricated by different growth conditions. On the other hand, the carrier-doping level estimated from the position of the chemical potential was found to be sensitive to the sample fabrication conditio…
Pressure evolution of the normal- and superconducting-state properties of the line-nodal material CaSb$_2$ revealed by $^{123}$Sb nuclear quadrupole resonance
Recently, a family of nonmagnetic kagome metals \textit{A}$\mathrm{V_3Sb_5}$ (\textit{A}=K, Rb, and Cs) has attracted significant attention for realizing the intertwining of quantum order and nontrivial topology. However, these compounds have been identified to host complex band structures. Therefore, it is desirable to design and synthesize novel kagome materials with a simple band topology and good transport properties. In this study, using first-principles calculations, we present the electronic properties and the intrinsic spin Hall effect of V$_6$Sb$_4$, the latest experimentally synthesi…
Superconducting and topological states are two quantum phenomena attracting much interest. Their coexistence may lead to topological superconductivity sought-after for Majorana-based quantum computing. However, there is no causal relationship between the two, since superconductivity is a many-body effect due to electron-electron interaction while topology is a single-particle manifestation of electron band structure. Here, we demonstrate a novel form of Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) pairing, induced by topological Weyl nodal lines in Ising Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (IBCS) superconduc…
Basic experimental facts related to ARPES, tunnelling, optics ad neutron scattering measurements are discussed. They give evidence for the relevance of the electron-phonon interaction (EPI) in pairing mechanism of HTSC cuprates. A controllable theory for strong correlations and their effects on EPI is discussed which is based on the 1/N expansion method in the t-J model. Strong correlations renormalize EPI and other charge-fluctuation properties (by including nonmagnetic impurity scattering) and the forward scattering peak (FSP) appears in the effective interactions. Pronounced FSP in EPI of H…
Kagome lattice composed of transition-metal ions provides a great opportunity to explore the intertwining between geometry, electronic orders and band topology. The discovery of multiple competing orders that connect intimately with the underlying topological band structure in nonmagnetic kagome metals $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ ($A$ = K, Rb, Cs) further pushes this topic to the quantum frontier. Here we report the discovery and characterization of a new class of vanadium-based compounds with kagome bilayers, namely $A$V$_6$Sb$_6$ ($A$ = K, Rb, Cs) and V$_6$Sb$_4$, which, together with $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$, com…
The theory of symmetry indicators has enabled database searches for topological materials in normal conducting phases, which has led to several encyclopedic topological material databases. To date, such a database for topological superconductors is yet to be achieved because of the lack of information about pairing symmetries of realistic materials. In this work, sidestepping this issue, we tackle an alternative problem: the predictions of topological and nodal superconductivity in materials for each single-valued representation of point groups. Based on recently developed symmetry indicators …
Determining the exact pairing symmetry of the superconducting order parameter in candidate unconventional superconductors remains an important challenge. Recently a new method, based on phase sensitive quasiparticle interference measurements, was developed to identify gap sign changes in isotropic multiband systems. Here we extend this approach to the single-band and multiband nodal $d$-wave superconducting cases relevant, respectively, for the cuprates and likely for the infinite-layer nickelate superconductors. Combining analytical and numerical calculations, we show that the antisymmetrized…
A well-known result in unconventional superconductivity is the fragility of nodal superconductors against nonmagnetic impurities. Despite this common wisdom, Bi$_2$Se$_3$-based topological superconductors have recently displayed unusual robustness against disorder. Here we provide a theoretical framework which naturally explains what protects Cooper pairs from strong scattering in complex superconductors. Our analysis is based on the concept of superconducting fitness and generalizes the famous Anderson's theorem into superconductors having multiple internal degrees of freedom. For concretenes…
Determination of the symmetry property of superconducting gaps has been a central issue in studies to understand the mechanisms of unconventional superconductivity. Although it is often difficult to completely achieve the aforementioned goal, the existence of superconducting nodes, one of the few important experimental signatures of unconventional superconductivity, plays a vital role in exploring the possibility of unconventional superconductivity. The interplay between superconducting nodes and topology has been actively investigated, and intensive research in the past decade has revealed va…
In superconductors with unconventional pairing mechanisms, the energy gap in the excitation spectrum often has nodes, which allow quasiparticle excitations at low energies. In many cases, e.g. $d$-wave cuprate superconductors, the position and topology of nodes are imposed by the symmetry, and thus the presence of gapless excitations is protected against disorder. Here we report on the observation of distinct changes in the gap structure of iron-pnictide superconductors with increasing impurity scattering. By the successive introduction of nonmagnetic point defects into BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x…
To understand the rich electronic phase diagram in FeSe under pressure that vividly demonstrates the strong interplay between the nematicity, magnetism and superconductivity, we analyze the electronic states by including the higher-order many-body effects called the vertex correction (VC). We predict the pressure-induced emergence of xy-orbital hole-pocket based on the first-principles analysis. Due to this pressure-induced Lifshitz transition, the spin fluctuations on the xy orbital are enhanced, whereas those on xz,yz orbitals are gradually reduced. For this reason, nonmagnetic orbital order…
