A well-known result in unconventional superconductivity is the fragility of nodal superconductors against nonmagnetic impurities. Despite this common wisdom, Bi$_2$Se$_3$-based topological superconductors have recently displayed unusual robustness against disorder. Here we provide a theoretical framework which naturally explains what protects Cooper pairs from strong scattering in complex superconductors. Our analysis is based on the concept of superconducting fitness and generalizes the famous Anderson's theorem into superconductors having multiple internal degrees of freedom. For concreteness, we report on the extreme example of the Cu$_x$(PbSe)$_5$(Bi$_2$Se$_3$)$_6$ superconductor, where thermal conductivity measurements down to 50 mK not only give unambiguous evidence for the existence of nodes, but also reveal that the energy scale corresponding to the scattering rate is orders of magnitude larger than the superconducting energy gap. This provides a most spectacular case of the generalized Anderson's theorem protecting a nodal superconductor.
We study the model of a d-wave superconductor interacting with finite concentration of Anderson impurities at zero temperature. The interaction between impurity and conduction electrons is taken into account within the large-$N$ approximation. We discuss the obtained phase diagram and its dependence on the main energy scales.
We introduce a new $Φ$-derivable approach for the Anderson impurity model in a BCS superconductor. The regime of validity of this conserving theory extends well beyond that of the Hartree-Fock approximation. This is the first generalization of the U-perturbation theory to encompass a superconductor.
A Josephson junction consisting of an Anderson impurity weakly coupled with two-band and single-band superconductors exposes a time reversal breaking ground state when the coupling between the two bands exceeds a certain threshold. The critical regime occurs around local moment formation. This indicates a fundamental and distinct role of strong correlations: Driving a system into a time reversal breaking ground state. One of the observable consequences is that the impurity magnetization in this phase is reduced.
Anderson-Higgs mechanism of mass generation is a generic concept in high-energy and condensed matter physics. It shows up through the Meissner effect providing the expulsion of static and low-frequency magnetic fields from superconductors. However, it does not affect propagating electromagnetic waves with a spectrum gap determined by the plasma frequency, which is too large to be sensitive to the superconducting transition. Here we demonstrate the spectroscopic manifestation of the Anderson-Higgs mass, showing that it determines the spectrum gap of magnons in superconductor/ferromagnet/superco…
Heavy-fermion or Kondo lattice materials are considered to be typical strongly correlated systems, for which mean-field approximations have shown that the Coulomb interaction increases the effective mass and narrows the band gap. In this paper, to clarify interaction effects on the electronic excitation, the spectral function of the Kondo lattice and periodic Anderson models is studied around Kondo insulators in the strong-coupling regime, by using the non-Abelian dynamical density-matrix renormalization group method and perturbation theory. Upon doping a Kondo insulator, an electronic mode em…
We study the effects of static nonlocal Coulomb interactions in layered conventional superconductors and show that they generically suppress superconductivity and reduce the critical temperature. Although the nonlocal Coulomb interaction leads to a significant structure in the superconducting gap function, we find that most properties can be effectively described by means of an appropriately revised local Coulomb pseudopotential $\tildeμ_C^*$, which is larger than the commonly adopted retarded Tolmachev-Morel-Anderson pseudopotential $μ^*_C$. To understand this, we analyze the Bethe-Salpeter e…
We study the effect of disorder in a holographic superconductor by introducing a quasi-periodic chemical potential. When the condensation of the superconductor is sufficiently small compared with the strength of disorder, we find that there exists a discontinuous phase transition from superconducting state to normal state with increasing disorder strength. For relatively large condensation, we find that disorder suppress but not completely destroy superconductivity. This model may provide a holographic realization of Anderson Localization in two-dimensional superconductor.
We pointed out that the main claim of Ref.[1] that the presence of the orbital degree of freedom is essential to describe the correct impurity effects for Iron-based superconductors is incorrect and demonstrated the equivalent results of Tc suppression due to impurities by both the band basis model and the orbital basis model.
We explain that the study of impurity effect in iron pnictides are correctly calculated based on the T-matrix approximation, contrary to the Comment by Bang. The replacement T with T-I proposed by Bang breaks the perturbation theory and is therefore erroneous.
Based on the five-orbital model, we study the effect of local impurity in iron pnictides, and find that the interband impurity scattering is promoted by the d-orbital degree of freedom. This fact means that the fully-gapped sign-reversing s-wave state, which is predicted by spin fluctuation theories, is very fragile against impurities. In the BCS theory, only 1% impurities with intermediate strength induce huge pair-breaking, resulting in the large in-gap state and prominent reduction in Tc, contrary to the prediction based on simple orbital-less models. The present study provides a stringent …
A superconductor illuminated by an ac electric field with frequency $Ω$ is theoretically found to generate a collective precession of Anderson's pseudospins, and hence a coherent amplitude oscillation of the order parameter, with a doubled frequency $2Ω$ through a nonlinear light-matter coupling. We provide a fundamental theory, based on the mean-field formalism, to show that the induced pseudospin precession resonates with the Higgs amplitude mode of the superconductor at $2Ω=2Δ$ with $2Δ$ being the superconducting gap. The resonant precession is accompanied by a divergent enhancement of the …
Using a combination of analytic and numerical methods, we study the polarizability of a (non-interacting) Anderson insulator in one, two, and three dimensions and demonstrate that, in a wide range of parameters, it scales proportionally to the square of the localization length, contrary to earlier claims based on the effective-medium approximation. We further analyze the effect of electron-electron interactions on the dielectric constant in quasi-1D, quasi-2D and 3D materials with large localization length, including both Coulomb repulsion and phonon-mediated attraction. The phonon-mediated at…
According to the Anderson theorem, the critical temperature T_c of a disordered superconductor is determined by the average density of states and does not change at the localization threshold. This statement is valid under assumption of a self-averaging order parameter, which can be violated in the strong localization region. Stimulating by statements on the essential increase of T_c near the Anderson transition, we carried out the systematic investigation of possible violations of self-averaging. Strong deviations from the Anderson theorem are possible due to resonances at the quasi-discrete …
The Kondo effects of an Anderson impurity embedded into a d-wave superconductor is studied. Within the slave-boson mean-field approach, the derived Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations are solved via exact diagonalization. We show that a critical coupling strength, above which the Kondo effect takes place, exists regardless of whether the band particle-hole symmetry is present or not. The resonant quasiparticle peaks are found in the local density of states (LDOS) both directly at the impurity and around its neighbors, which is in sharp contrast to the case of nonmagnetic unitary impurities, where t…
We have studied the effects of strong impurity scattering on disordered superconductors beyond the low impurity concentration limit. By applying the full CPA to a superconductiong A-B binary alloy, we calculated the fluctuations of the local order parameters $Δ_{A}, Δ_{B}$ and charge densities, $n_{A}, n_{B}$ for weak and strong on site disorder. We find that for narrow band alloy s-wav e superconductors the conditions for Anderson's theorem are satisfied in general only for the case of particle-hole symmetry. In this case it is satisfied regardless whether we are in the weak or strong scatter…
To explain the high-temperature superconductivity of hole-doped copper-oxide high-temperature superconductors (HDCO-HTSCs), Anderson proposed a theory: (A) the pseudogap state is a resonating valence-bond (RVB) state below T* and (B) the RVB state translates itself into high-temperature superconducting state below Tc. In this paper we abandon Anderson theory B but still retain Anderson theory A and add three new hypotheses. Jointed three hypotheses with Anderson theory A, we construct an effective Hamiltonian of HDCO-HTSCs and explain why Tc-line is a dome in phase diagram and why HDCO-HTSCs h…
We present a self-consistent solution for a model of a d-wave superconductor with finite concen- tration of Anderson impurities at zero temperature using the slave boson method. We show how the phase diagram depends on the strength of interaction between impurity and extended states. For fixed impurity level energy $E_0$ in the Kondo limit there is one superconducting-normal state transition for all impurity concentrations $n$. When $E_0$ is close the Fermi energy there are three such transitions for impurity concentration exceeding certain minimum value $n(Γ_0,E_0)$. If hybridization $Γ_0$ is…
We investigate validity of Anderson's theorem (AT) for disordered s-wave superconductors in a negative U Hubbard model with random on-site energies, $ε_{i}$. The superconducting critical temperature, $T_{c}$, is calculated in the coherent potential approximation (CPA) as a function of impurity concentration, $c$, the random potentials for different band filling. In contradiction to Anderson's theorem, we found that $T_{c}$ is dramatically sensitive with respect to $c$ and $ε_{i}$. Our results shows that for low impurity concentrations and weak on-site energies, $ε_{i}$, the AT is valid, while …
We develop a microscopic and gauge-invariant theory for collective modes resulting from the phase of the superconducting order parameter in non-centrosymmetric superconductors. Considering various crystal symmetries we derive the corresponding gauge mode $ω_{\rm G}({\bf q})$ and find, in particular, new Leggett modes $ω_{\rm L}({\bf q})$ with characteristic properties that are unique to non-centrosymmetric superconductors. We calculate their mass and dispersion that reflect the underlying spin-orbit coupling and thus the balance between triplet and singlet superconductivity occurring simultane…
Using an extended Anderson/Kondo impurity model to describe the magnetic moments around an impurity doped in high-$T_{\text{c}}$ d-wave cuprates and in the framework of the slave-boson meanfield approach, we study numerically the impurity state in the vortex core by exact diagonalization of the well-established Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. The low-energy impurity state is found to be good agreement with scanning tunnelingmicroscopy observation. After pinning a vortex on the impurity site, we compare the unitary impurity model with the extended Anderson impurity model by examining the effect…
The low-frequency dynamical response of an Anderson insulator is dominated by so-called Mott resonances: hybridization of pairs of states close in energy, but separated spatially. We study the effect of interaction on Mott resonances in the model of spinful fermions (electrons) with local attraction. This model is known to exhibit a so-called pseudogap: a suppression of the low-energy single-particle excitations. Correspondingly, the low-energy dynamical response is also reduced. However this reduction has mostly quantitative character. In particular, the Mott formula for frequency-dependent c…
We study the magnetoresistance of two-dimensional bosonic Anderson insulators. We describe the change in spatial decay of localized excitations in response to a magnetic field, which is given by an interference sum over alternative tunnelling trajectories. The excitations become more localized with increasing field (in sharp contrast to generic fermionic excitations which get weakly delocalized): the localization length ξ(B) is found to change as ξ^{-1}(B)-ξ^{-1}(0)\sim B^{4/5}. The quantum interference problem maps onto the classical statistical mechanics of directed polymers in random media …
We study a disordered weakly-coupled superconductor around the Anderson transition by solving numerically the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations in a three dimensional lattice of size up to $20\times20\times20$ in the presence of a random potential. The spatial average of the order parameter is moderately enhanced as disorder approaches the transition but decreases sharply in the insulating region. The spatial distribution of the order parameter is sensitive to the disorder strength: for intermediate disorders below the transition, we already observe a highly asymmetric distribution with an …
We discuss the elementary vortex pinning in type-II superconductors in connection with the Anderson's theorem for nonmagnetic impurities. We address the following two issues. One is an enhancement of the vortex pinning energy in the unconventional superconductors. This enhancement comes from the pair-breaking effect of a nonmagnetic defect as the pinning center far away from the vortex core (i.e., the pair-breaking effect due to the non-applicability of the Anderson's theorem in the unconventional superconductors). The other is an effect of the chirality on the vortex pinning energy in a chira…
The Floquet topological superconducting state is a nonequilibrium time-periodic state hosting Majorana fermions. We study its transport properties by using the Kitaev model with time-periodic incommensurate potentials, which experiences phase transition from the Floquet topological superconducting phase to the Anderson localized phase with increasing driving strength. We study both the real time dynamics of the current and the non-analytic behavior of the tunneling conductance at the transition. Especially, we find that the tunneling conductance changes continuously at the transition, being a …
In this paper, a brief review of the history of topological insulators is given. After that, electronic transport experiments in topological insulator-superconductor hybrid structures, including experimental methods, physical properties and seemingly contradictory observations are discussed. Additionally, some new topological insulator hybrid structures are proposed.
Results on the superconductor to insulator transition in two-dimensional films are analyzed in terms of coupling of the system to a dissipative bath. Upon lowering the temperature the parameter that controls this coupling becomes relevant and a wide range of metallic phase is recovered.
Isolated Majorana fermion states can be produced at the boundary of a topological superconductor in a quasi-one-dimensional geometry. If such a superconductor is connected to a disordered quantum wire, the Majorana fermion is spread into the wire, subject to Anderson localization. We study this effect in the limit of a thick wire with broken time-reversal and spin-rotational symmetries. With the use of a supersymmetric nonlinear sigma model, we calculate the average local density of states in the wire as a function of energy and of the distance from the interface with the superconductor. Our r…
A one-dimensional boundary of a two-dimensional topological superconductor can host a number of topologically protected chiral modes. Combining two topological superconductors with different topological indices, it is possible to achieve a situation when only a given number of channels ($m$) are topologically protected, while others are not and therefore are subject to Anderson localization in the presence of disorder. We study transport properties of such quasi-one-dimensional quantum wires with broken time-reversal and spin-rotational symmetries (class D) and calculate the average conductanc…
