A Josephson junction consisting of an Anderson impurity weakly coupled with two-band and single-band superconductors exposes a time reversal breaking ground state when the coupling between the two bands exceeds a certain threshold. The critical regime occurs around local moment formation.
This indicates a fundamental and distinct role of strong correlations: Driving a system into a time reversal breaking ground state. One of the observable consequences is that the impurity magnetization in this phase is reduced.
A theory is developed to study shot noise in superconducting (SAS) and hybrid (SAN) junctions with singly occupied Anderson impurity (A) as a weak link. The zero-frequency DC component of the shot noise spectral density is calculated at zero temperature as a function of the bias at different Coulomb repulsion strengths U, and show a remarkable structure resulting from combination of electron-electron interaction and Andreev reflections.
Using an extended Anderson/Kondo impurity model to describe the magnetic moments around an impurity doped in high-$T_{\text{c}}$ d-wave cuprates and in the framework of the slave-boson meanfield approach, we study numerically the impurity state in the vortex core by exact diagonalization of the well-established Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. The low-energy impurity state is found to be good agreement with scanning tunnelingmicroscopy observation. After pinning a vortex on the impurity site, we compare the unitary impurity model with the extended Anderson impurity model by examining the effect…
We investigate the Josephson current J(ϕ) through a quantum dot embedded between two superconductors showing a phase difference ϕ. The system is modeled as a single Anderson impurity coupled to BCS leads, and the functional and the numerical renormalization group frameworks are employed to treat the local Coulomb interaction U. We reestablish the picture of a quantum phase transition occurring if the ratio between the Kondo temperature T_K and the superconducting energy gap Δor, at appropriate T_K/Δ, the phase difference ϕor the impurity energy is varied. We present accurate zero- as well as f…
The aspect of the quasiparticle interaction of a local Fermi liquid, the impurity version of f$^2$-based heavy fermions, is studied by the Wilson numerical renormalization group method. In particular, the case of the f$^2$-singlet crystalline-electric-field ground state is investigated assuming the case of UPt$_3$ with the hexagonal symmetry. It is found that the interorbital interaction becomes larger than the intraorbital one in contrast to the case of the bare Coulomb interaction for the parameters relevant to UPt$_3$. This result offers us a basis to construct a microscopic theory of the s…
We analyze a perturbation of the boundary Sine-Gordon model where two boundary terms of different periodicities and scaling dimensions are coupled to a Kondo-like spin degree of freedom. We show that, by pertinently engineering the coupling with the spin degree of freedom, a competition between the two boundary interactions may be induced, and that this gives rise to nonpertubative phenomena, such as the emergence of novel quantum phases: indeed, we demonstrate that the strongly coupled fixed point may become unstable as a result of the "deconfinement" of a new set of phase-slip operators -the…
We investigate the Josephson transport through a thin semiconductor barrier containing impurity centers with the on-site Hubbard interaction $u$ of an arbitrary sign and strength. We find that in the case of the repulsive interaction the Josephson current changes sign with the temperature increase if the energy of the impurity level $ε$ (measured from the Fermi energy of superconductors) falls in the interval $(-u,0)$. We predict strong temporal fluctuations of the current if only a few centers present within the junction. In the case of the attractive impurity potential ($u<0$) and at low tem…
We propose Josephson junction with a high-spin magnetic impurity sandwiched between two superconductors. This system shows a $π$ junction behavior as a function of the spin magnetic moment state of the impurity, the interface transparency, exchange coupling and electron-electron interactions in the system. The system is theoretically analyzed for possible reason behind the $π$ shift. The crucial role of spin flip scattering is highlighted. Possible applications in quantum computation of our proposed tunable high spin magnetic impurity $π$ junction is underscored.
The Kondo effects of an Anderson impurity embedded into a d-wave superconductor is studied. Within the slave-boson mean-field approach, the derived Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations are solved via exact diagonalization. We show that a critical coupling strength, above which the Kondo effect takes place, exists regardless of whether the band particle-hole symmetry is present or not. The resonant quasiparticle peaks are found in the local density of states (LDOS) both directly at the impurity and around its neighbors, which is in sharp contrast to the case of nonmagnetic unitary impurities, where t…
The ordering trend of magnetic impurities at low temperature results in the frustration of the pair-breaking effect and induces a ``recovery'' of superconducting properties. We show that this effect manifests itself in the deviation of the Josephson current amplitude from the values obtained within the Ambegaokar-Baratoff and the Abrikosov-Gor'kov models. We consider both weak and strong-coupling cases. The theory is applied to describe the experimental data obtained for the low-$T_c$ superconductor SmRh$_4$B$_4$. We further predict a ``recovery'' effect of the Josephson current in high-temper…
Using a generalization of the non-crossing approximation which incorporates Andreev reflection, we study the properties of an infinite-U Anderson impurity coupled to two superconducting leads. In the regime where $Δ$ and $T_K$ are comparable, we find that the position of the sub-gap resonance in the impurity spectral function develops a strong anomalous phase dependence-- its energy is a minimum when the phase difference between the superconductors is equal to $π$. Calculating the Josephson current through the impurity, we find that $π$-junction behaviour is lost as the position of the bound-s…
We present a self-consistent solution for a model of a d-wave superconductor with finite concen- tration of Anderson impurities at zero temperature using the slave boson method. We show how the phase diagram depends on the strength of interaction between impurity and extended states. For fixed impurity level energy $E_0$ in the Kondo limit there is one superconducting-normal state transition for all impurity concentrations $n$. When $E_0$ is close the Fermi energy there are three such transitions for impurity concentration exceeding certain minimum value $n(Γ_0,E_0)$. If hybridization $Γ_0$ is…
Current-phase relation in a Josephson junction formed by putting two s-wave superconductors on the same edge of a two dimensional topological insulator is investigated. We consider the case that the junction length is finite and magnetic impurity exists. The similarity and difference with conventional Josephson junction is discussed. The current is calculated in the semiconductor picture. Both the $2π$- and $4π$-period current-phase relations ($I_{2π}(ϕ), I_{4π}(ϕ)$) are studied. There is a sharp jump at $ϕ=π$ and $ϕ=2π$ for $I_{2π}$ and $I_{4π}$ respectively in the clean junction. For $I_{2π}…
Quantum fluctuations in an anharmonic superconducting circuit enable frequency conversion of individual incoming photons. This effect, linear in the photon beam intensity, leads to ramifications for the standard input-output circuit theory. We consider an extreme case of anharmonicity in which photons scatter off a small set of weak links within a Josephson junction array. We show that this quantum impurity displays Kondo physics and evaluate the elastic and inelastic photon scattering cross sections. These cross sections reveal many-body properties of the Kondo problem that are hard to access…
We investigate the Josephson coupling between two superconductors mediated through an infinite U Anderson impurity, adapting a variational wavefunction approach which has proved successful for the Kondo model. Unlike the Kondo problem, however, a crossing of singlet and doublet state energies may be produced by varying the ratio of Kondo energy to superconducting gap, in agreement with recent work of Clerk and Ambegaokar. We construct the phase diagram for the junction and discuss properties of different phases. In addition, we find the singlet and doublet state energies within a slave boson m…
Interaction of the fluxon with the finite size dipole impurity in the long Josephson junction is investigated. The impurity has polarity and will be referred to as a {\it dipole} impurity because it also has a direction and, consequently, changes its sign under the space inversion transform $x \to -x$. Such a model is used to describe the inductively coupled to the Josephson transmission line qubit and the misaligned Abrikosov vortex that penetrates into the long Josephson junction. We derive the approximate equations of motion for the fluxon center of mass and its velocity. With the help of t…
The Josephson-Anderson relation, valid for the incompressible Navier-Stokes solutions which describe flow around a solid body, instantaneously equates the power dissipated by drag to the flux of vorticity across the flow lines of the potential Euler solution considered by d'Alembert. Its derivation involves a decomposition of the velocity field into this background potential-flow field and a solenoidal field corresponding to the rotational wake behind the body, with the flux term describing transfer from the interaction energy between the two fields and into kinetic energy of the rotational fl…
