Two pressure-induced phase transitions have been theoretically studied in the layered iron phosphorus triselenide (FePSe3). Topological analysis of chemical bonding in FePSe3 has been performed based on the results of first-principles calculations within the periodic linear combination of atomic orbitals (LCAO) method with hybrid Hartree-Fock-DFT B3LYP functional. The first transition at about 6 GPa is accompanied by the symmetry change from R-3 to C2/m, whereas the semiconductor-to-metal transition (SMT) occurs at about 13 GPa leading to the symmetry change from C2/m to P-31m. We found that the collapse of the band gap at about 13 GPa occurs due to changes in the electronic structure of FePSe3 induced by relative displacements of phosphorus or selenium atoms along the c-axis direction under pressure. The results of the topological analysis of the electron density and its Laplacian demonstrate that the pressure changes not only the interatomic distances but also the bond nature between the intralayer and interlayer phosphorus atoms. The interlayer P-P interactions are absent in two non-metallic FePSe3 phases while after SMT the intralayer P-P interactions weaken and the interlayer P-P interactions appear.
Layered materials span a very broad range of solids ranging from van der Waals materials to highly complex crystal structures such as clays. They are commonly believed to have highly anisotropic properties, which is essentially attributed to weak interlayer interactions. The layered Mg3Sb2 structure is currently being intensely scrutinized due to its outstanding thermoelectric properties. Based on quantitative chemical bonding analysis we unravel that Mg3Sb2 exhibits a nearly isotropic three-dimensional (3D) bonding network with the interlayer and intralayer bonds being surprisingly similar, a…
Recent studies have revealed that the interlayer interaction in two-dimensional (2D) layered materials is not simply of van der Waals character but could coexist with quasi-bonding character. Here we classify the interlayer quasi-bonding interactions into two main categories (I: homo-occupancy interaction, II: hetero-occupancy interaction) according to the occupancy of the involved energy bands near the Fermi level. Then we investigate the quasi-bonding-interaction-induced band structure evolution of several representative 2D materials based on density functional theory calculations. Further c…
The comparative study of structural, electronic properties, topology of the Fermi surface, and the features of chemical bonding in layered 1111-oxyarsenides LaRhAsO and LaIrAsO has been performed based on the results of ab initio modeling of their electronic structure. It was established that only weak sensitivity with respect both to electron and hole doping is expected for LaIrAsO being non-magnetic metal, however, the Rh-containing compound should be characterized with weak band magnetism, and the hole doping is expected to be able to move its ground state away from the boundary of magnetic…
Understanding the interplay between various design strategies (for instance, bonding heterogeneity and lone pair induced anharmonicity) to achieve ultralow lattice thermal conductivity ($κ_l$) is indispensable for discovering novel functional materials for thermal energy applications. In the present study, we investigate layered PbXF (X = Cl, Br, I), which offers bonding heterogeneity through the layered crystal structure, anharmonicity through the Pb$^{2+}$ $6s^2$ lone pair, and phonon softening through the mass difference between F and Pb/X. The weak inter-layer van der Waals bonding and the…
Although the precise microscopic knowledge of van der Waals interactions is crucial for understanding bonding in weakly bonded layered compounds, very little quantitative information on the strength of interlayer interaction in these materials is available, either from experiments or simulations. Here, using many-body perturbation and advanced density-functional theory techniques, we calculate the interlayer binding and exfoliation energies for a large number of layered compounds and show that, independent of the electronic structure of the material, the energies for most systems are around 20…
Crystal orbital overlap population based on all-electron ab initio simulation with numeric atom-centered orbitals and its application to chemical-bonding analysis in Li-intercalated layered materials
Explicit expressions, for efficient application in engineering practice, are derived for generalized displacements and stresses in simply supported multi-layered wide plates and beams subjected to steady-state thermal and mechanical loading. The expressions are general and apply to plates composed of an arbitrary number of layers, of arbitrary thickness and elastic/thermal properties, and where the interfaces between the layers may be imperfect and allow relative sliding. The closed-form solutions are obtained using a multiscale homogenized model which depends on only three displacement variab…
First-principle FLAPW-GGA band structure calculations are employed to obtain the structural, electronic properties and chemical bonding picture for two related layered phases, namely, quaternary oxyarsenides LaZnAsO and YZnAsO. These compounds are found to be direct-transition type semiconductors with the GGA gaps of about 0.65-1.30 eV. The peculiarities of chemical bonding in these phases are investigated and discussed in comparison with quaternary oxyarsenide LaFeAsO - a basic phase for the newly discovered 26-52K superconductors.
By means of the FLAPW-GGA approach, we have systematically studied the structural and electronic properties of tetragonal dichalcogenides KNi2Ch2 (Ch = S, Se, and Te). Our results show that replacements of chalcogens (S -> Se -> Te) lead to anisotropic deformations of the crystals structure, which are related to the strong anisotropic character of the inter-atomic bonds, where inside the [Ni2Ch2] blocks, mixed covalent-ionic-metallic bonds occur, whereas between the adjacent [Ni2Ch2] blocks and K atomic sheets, ionic bonds emerge. We found that in the sequence KNi2S2 -> KNi2Se2 -> KNi2Te2 (i) …
We present a first-principles description of anisotropic materials characterized by having both weak (dispersion-like) and strong covalent bonds, based on the Adiabatic--Connection Fluctuation--Dissipation Theorem within Density Functional Theory. For hexagonal boron nitride the in-plane and out of plane bonding as well as vibrational dynamics are well described both at equilibrium and when the layers are pulled apart. Also bonding in covalent and ionic solids is described. The formalism allows to ping-down the deficiencies of common exchange-correlation functionals and provides insight toward…
First-principles FLAPW-GGA band structure calculations were employed to examine the structural, electronic properties and the chemical bonding picture for four ZrCuSiAs-like Th-based quaternary pnictide oxides ThCuPO, ThCuAsO, ThAgPO, and ThAgAsO. These compounds were found to be semimetals and may be viewed as "intermediate" systems between two main isostructural groups of superconducting and semiconducting 1111 phases. The Th 5f states participate actively in the formation of valence bands and the Th 5f states for ThMPnO phases are itinerant and partially occupied. We found also that the bon…
The anharmonicity of phonons in solid is ultimately rooted in the chemical bonding. However, the direct connection between phonon anharmoncity and chemical bonding is difficult to make experimentally or theoretically, due mainly to their complicated lattice structures. Here, with the help of density functional theory based calculations, we discovery that electrostatic inter-layer coupling in Bi$_2$O$_2$X (X=S,Se,Te) leads to intrinsically low lattice thermal conductivity. We explain our discovery by the strong anharmonic chemical bonding between Bi and chalcogen atoms. Our results shed light o…
Sparse matter is characterized by regions with low electron density and its understanding calls for methods to accurately calculate both the van der Waals (vdW) interactions and other bonding. Here we present a first-principles density functional theory (DFT) study of a layered oxide (V2O5) bulk structure which shows charge voids in between the layers and we highlight the role of the vdW forces in building up material cohesion. The result of previous first-principles studies involving semilocal approximations to the exchange-correlation functional in DFT gave results in good agreement with exp…
We discuss the mechanism responsible for the observed improvement in the structural properties of In doped GaSe, a layered material of great current interest. Formation energy calculations show that by tuning the Fermi energy, In can substitute for Ga or can go as an interstitial charged defect$(\text{In}_{\text{i}}^{\text{3+}})$. We find that $\text{In}_{\text{i}}^{\text{3+}}$ dramatically increases the shear stiffness of GaSe, explaining the observed enhancement in the rigidity of In doped p-GaSe. The mechanism responsible for rigidity enhancement discussed here is quite general and applicab…
We report the first-principle FLAPW-GGA calculations of the elastic properties of two related layered phases, namely, the ternary arsenide SrFe2As2 and the quaternary oxyarsenide LaFeAsO - basic phases for the newly discovered "122" and "1111" 38-55K superconductors. The independent elastic constants (Cij), bulk moduli, compressibility, and shear moduli are evaluated and discussed. The numerical estimates of the elastic parameters of the polycrystalline SrFe2As2 and LaFeAsO ceramics are performed for the first time. Additionally, the peculiarities of chemical bonding in these phases are discus…
We report a joint experimental and theoretical study of the structural, vibrational, and electronic properties of layered monoclinic arsenic sulfide (alpha-As2S3), aka mineral orpiment, under compression. X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering measurements performed in orpiment samples at high pressure and combined with ab initio calculations have allowed us to determine the equation of state and the tentative assignment of the symmetry of many Raman-active modes of orpiment. From our results, we conclude that no first-order phase transition occurs up to 25 GPa at room temperature; however, co…
SnTaS2 is a recently discovered layered semimetal exhibiting type-II low transition temperature superconductivity. In this study, we have investigated these hitherto unexplored properties of SnTaS2 for the first time employing density functional theory (DFT) based first-principles method. SnTaS2 is a mechanically stable, elastically anisotropic compound with strongly layere…

Unmasking charge transfer in the Misfits: ARPES and ab initio prediction of electronic structure in layered incommensurate systems without artificial strain
Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers and heterostructures have emerged as a compelling class of materials with transformative new science that may be harnessed for novel device technologies. These materials are commonly fabricated by exfoliation of flakes from bulk crystals, but wafer-scale epitaxy of single crystal films is required to advance the field. This article reviews the fundamental aspects of epitaxial growth of van der Waals bonded crystals specific to TMD films. The structural and electronic properties of TMD crystals are initially described along with sources and metho…
MoTe2 is a rare transition-metal ditelluride having two kinds of layered polytypes, hexagonal structure with trigonal prismatic Mo coordination and monoclinic structure with octahedral Mo coordination. The monoclinic distortion in the latter is caused by anisotropic metal-metal bonding. In this work, we have examined the Nb doping effect on both polytypes of MoTe2 and clarified a structural phase diagram for Mo1-xNbxTe2 containing four kinds of polytypes. A rhombohedral polytype crystallizing in polar space group has been newly identified as a high-temperature metastable phase at slightly Nb-r…
The compounds FeMnAsxP1-x are very promising as far as commercial applications of the magnetocaloric effect are concerned. However, the theoretical literature on magnetocaloric materials still adopts simple molecular-field models in the description of important properties like the entropy variation that accompanies applied isothermal magnetic field cycling, for instance. We apply a Green function theoretical treatment for such analysis. The advantages of such approach are well-known since the details of the crystal structure are incorporated in the model, as well as a precise description of co…
By means of first-principles calculations, the electronic structure and chemical bonding for the recently discovered tetragonal (s.g. P4/n; # 85) superconducting (Tc ~ 25K) phase Ca10(Pt4As8)(Fe2As2)5 have been examined in details, and the optimized structural parameters, electronic bands, densities of states, and inter-atomic bonding picture were evaluated and analyzed in comparison with related layered iron-based superconducting materials. We have shown that (i) Ca10(Pt4As8)(Fe2As2)5 is metallic-like, and the electronic bands in the window around the Fermi level are formed mainly by the Fe 3…
Using extensive first-principles molecular dynamics calculations, we characterize the superionic phase transition and the lattice and electronic structures of the archetypal Type-I superionic conductor alpha-AgI. We find that superionicity is signalled by a phase transition of the silver ions alone. In the superionic phase, the first silver shell surrounding an iodine displays a distinct dynamical structure that would escape a time-averaged characterization, and we capture this structure in a set of ordering rules. The electronic structure of the system demonstrates a unique chemical signature…

Compressed hydrogen passes through a series of layered structures in which the layers can be viewed as distorted graphene sheets. The electronic structures of these layered structures can be understood by studying simple model systems- an ideal single hydrogen graphene sheet and three-dimensional model lattices consisting of such sheets. The energetically stable structures result from structural distortions of model graphene-based systems due to electronic instabilities towards Peierls or other distortions associated with the opening of a band gap. Two factors play crucial roles in the metalli…
PbTaSe2 is a non-centrosymmetric topological semimetal. In this work we have explored the structural, elastic, mechanical, bonding, electronic, acoustic, thermal, and optical properties of PbTaSe2. The electronic bond structure calculations confirm semi-metallic character. Fermi surface topology shows both electron and hole sheets. The single crystal elastic constants reveal that PbTaSe2 is elastically stable. The compound is soft, brittle, and highly machinable at the same time. It also possesses very high level of dry lubricity. Various anisotropy indicators suggest that PbTaSe2 is elastical…
Chemical bonding in 2D layered materials and van der Waals solids is central to understanding and harnessing their unique electronic, magnetic, optical, thermal and superconducting properties. Here we report the discovery of spontaneous, bidirectional, bilayer twisting (twist angle ~ 4.5°) in the metallic kagomé MgCo6Ge6 at T = 100(2) K via X-ray diffraction measure-ments, enabled by the preparation of single crystals by the Laser Bridgman method. Despite the appearance of static twisting on cooling from T ~ 300 K to 100 K, no evidence for a phase transition was found in physical properties me…
Usually the ions of a particular element in solids are in positive or negative oxidation states, depending upon the chemical environment. It is highly unusual for an atom having both positive as well as negative oxidation states simultaneously within the same structural framework in a particular compound. Our structural and chemical bonding analyses show that the hydrogen ions in the transition metal ammine borohydrides (TMABHs) with the chemical formula M(BH4)2(NH3)2 (M = Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn) have both positive and negative oxidation states. Our detailed analyses confirm …

Chalcogenide phase-change materials (PCMs) are regarded as the leading candidate for storage-class non-volatile memory and neuro-inspired computing. Recently, using the $TiTe_2$/$Sb_2Te_3$ material combination, a new framework - phase-change heterostructure (PCH), has been developed and proved to effectively suppress the noise and drift in electrical resistance upon memory programming, largely reducing the inter-device variability. However, the atomic-scale structural and chemical nature of PCH remains to be fully understood. In this work, we carry out thorough ab initio simulations to assess …
We investigate energetic and electronic properties of TiS2 , an archetypal van der Waals (vdW) material, from first principles, in the framework of the Density Functional Theory (DFT). In this system a recent experimental study showed a puzzling discrepancy between the distribution of the electron density in the interlayer region obtained by X-ray diffraction data and that computed by DFT, even adopting DFT functionals that should properly include vdW effects. Such a discrepancy could indicate a partial failure of state-of-the-art DFT approaches in describing the weak interlayer interactions o…
Structural, elastic, electronic, bonding, thermo-mechanical and optical properties of predicted NbAlB MAB phase in comparison to MoAlB: DFT based ab-initio insights
Molybdenum ditelluride (MoTe$_2$) has attracted considerable interest for nanoelectronic, optoelectronic, spintronic, and valleytronic applications because of its modest band gap, high field-effect mobility, large spin-orbit-coupling splitting, and tunable 1T'/2H phases. However, synthesizing large-area, high-quality MoTe$_2$ remains challenging. The complicated design of gas-phase reactant transport and reaction for chemical vapor deposition or tellurization is nontrivial because of the weak bonding energy between Mo and Te. Here, we report a new method for depositing MoTe$_2$ that entails us…
A superstructure can elicit versatile new properties of materials by breaking their original geometrical symmetries. It is an important topic in the layered graphene-like two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), but its origin remains unclear. Using diamond-anvil cell techniques, synchrotron x-ray diffraction, x-ray absorption, and the first-principles calculations, we show that the evolution from the weak Van der Waals bonding to the Heisenberg covalent bonding between layers induces an isostructural transition in quasi-two-dimensional 1$\textit{T}$-type VSe$_2$ at high pressu…
There is still no general consensus on how one can describe the out-of-equilibrium phenomena in matter induced by an ultrashort light pulse. We investigate the pulse-induced dynamics in a layered Dirac semimetal SrMnBi2 by pump-and-probe photoemission spectroscopy. At ~<1 ps, the electronic recovery slowed upon increasing the pump power. Such a bottleneck-type slowing is expected in a two-temperature model (TTM) scheme, although opposite trends have been observed to date in graphite and in cuprates. Subsequently, an unconventional power-law cooling took place at ~100 ps, indicating that spatia…
Pnictogens have multiple allotropic forms resulting from their ns2 np3 valence electronic configuration, making them the only elemental materials to crystallize in layered van der Waals (vdW) and quasi-vdW structures throughout the group. Light group VA elements are found in the layered orthorhombic A17 phase such as black phosphorus, and can transition to the layered rhombohedral A7 phase at high pressure. On the other hand, bulk heavier elements are only stable in the A7 phase. Herein, we demonstrate that these two phases not only co-exist during the vdW growth of antimony on weakly interact…
The residual stress induced in assembly is a common concern in electronic packaging. The mismatch in coefficient of thermal expansion between borosilicate glass and silicon, upon temperature variation, generates an internal stress state. This affects important characteristics of microelectromechanical devices or constituent elements. Such as self frequence or stiffness. Stresses caused by thermal expansion coefficients mismatch of anodically bonded glass and silicon samples are studied in this paper. Stress calculation based on lamination theory is presented. Usage examples of such calculation…
Subtle changes in chemical bonds may result in dramatic revolutions in magnetic properties in solid state materials. MnPt5P, a new derivative of the rare-earth-free ferromagnetic MnPt5As, was discovered and is presented in this work. MnPt5P was synthesized and its crystal structure and chemical composition were characterized by X-ray diffraction as well as energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Accordingly, MnPt5P crystallizes in the layered tetragonal structure with the space group P4/mmm (No. 123), in which the face-shared Mn@Pt12 polyhedral layers are separated by P layers. In contrast to th…
The interlayer bonding in two dimensional materials is particularly important because it is not only related to their physical and chemical stability but also affects their mechanical, thermal, electronic, optical, and other properties. To address this issue, we report the direct characterization of the interlayer bonding in 2D SnSe using contact-resonance atomic force microscopy in this study. Site specific CR spectroscopy and CR force spectroscopy measurements are performed on both SnSe and its supporting SiO2 substrate comparatively. Based on the cantilever and contact mechanic models, the …
The metastable layered compound MnBi2Te4 is the first experimentally realized intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator, predicted to host the quantum anomalous Hall effect at high temperatures upon exfoliation to atomically thin layers. While its magnetic ordering and topological properties have generated intensive interest, the mechanism behind its metastability and the ideal crystal synthesis conditions have remained elusive. Here, using a combined first-principles-based approach that considers lattice, charge, and spin degrees of freedom, we investigate the metastability of MnBi2Te…
Usually the ions in solid are in the positive oxidation states or in the negative oxidation state depending upon the chemical environment. It is highly unusual for an ion having both positive as well as negative oxidation state in a particular compound. Structural analysis suggest that the alkaline earth ammine borohydrides (AABH) with the chemical formula M (BH4)2(NH3)2 (M = Mg, Ca, or Sr) where hydrogen is present in +1 and -1 oxidation states. In order to understand the oxidation states of hydrogen and also the character of chemical bond present in AABH we have made charge density, electron…
Atomic modulations of two-dimensional materials using scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip-induced forces modifies their mechanical and electrical properties. In situ topographic and spectroscopic probing through electrical tunneling has been used for straining sheets of graphite, monolayer graphene and NbSe2. The findings also resolve a thirty-five-year-old controversy involving numerous proposed models to explain the source of anomalously high measured atomic amplitudes (of up to 24 Angstroms, expected 0.2 Angstroms) from atomic corrugation on graphite surfaces. Our findings attributes th…
CrCl3 is a layered insulator that undergoes a crystallographic phase transition below room temperature and orders antiferromagnetically at low temperature. Weak van der Waals bonding between the layers and ferromagnetic in-plane magnetic order make it a promising material for obtaining atomically thin magnets and creating van der Waals heterostructures. In this work we have grown crystals of CrCl3, revisited the structural and thermodynamic properties of the bulk material, and explored mechanical exfoliation of the crystals. We find two distinct anomalies in the heat capacity at 14 and 17 K co…

The layered 5d transition metal oxide Sr2IrO4 has been shown to host a novel Jeff=1/2 Mott spin orbit insulating state with antiferromagnetic ordering, leading to comparisons with the layered cuprates. Here we study the effect of substituting Mn for Ir in single crystals of Sr2Ir0.9Mn0.1O4 through an investigation involving bulk measurements and resonant x-ray and neutron scattering. We observe a new long range magnetic structure emerge upon doping through a reordering of the spins from the basal plane to the c-axis with a reduced ordering temperature compared to Sr2IrO4. The strong enhancemen…
