We report Raman signatures of electronic topological transition (ETT) at 3.6 GPa and rhombohedral (α-Bi2Te3) to monoclinic (β-Bi2Te3) structural transition at ~ 8 GPa. At the onset of ETT, a new Raman mode appears near 107 cm-1 which is dispersionless with pressure. The structural transition at ~ 8 GPa is marked by a change in pressure derivative of A1g and Eg mode frequencies as well as by appearance of new modes near 115 cm-1and 135 cm-1. The mode Grüneisen parameters are determined in both the α and β-phases.
High pressure Raman experiments on Boron Nitride multi-walled nanotubes show that the intensity of the vibrational mode at ~ 1367 cm-1 vanishes at ~ 12 GPa and it does not recover under decompression. In comparison, the high pressure Raman experiments on hexagonal Boron Nitride show a clear signature of a phase transition from hexagonal to wurtzite at ~ 13 GPa which is reversible on decompression. These results are contrasted with the pressure behavior of carbon nanotubes and graphite.
We use the density functional perturbation theory to determine for the first time the pressure evolution of the Raman intensities for a mineral, the two high-pressure structures of MgSiO3 perovskite and post-perovskite. At high pressures, the Raman powder spectra reveals three main peaks for the perovskite structure and one main peak for the post-perovskite structure. Due to the large differences in the spectra of the two phases Raman spectroscopy can be used as a good experimental indication of the phase transition.
The pressure influence on the lattice vibration of $CaZnF_4$ has been studied by Raman diffusion up to 17 GPa. Most Raman frequencies increase with increasing pressure. Three singularities in the pressure induced frequency evolution are observed around 1.5 GPa, 10 GPa and 17 GPa. The samples pressurized to 17 GPa or higher do not revert to the ambient pressure phase after being released, the new phase showing different Raman spectra from the ordinary one. It is suggested that $CaZnF_4$ undergoes probably sudden lattice deformations at about 1.5 GPa and 10 GPa, and an irreversible phase transfo…
Raman spectroscopic studies have been carried out on CaCrO4 under pressure up to 26GPa at ambient temperature. The Raman spectra showed CaCrO4 experienced a continuous structural phase transition started at near 6GPa, and finished at about 10GPa. It is found that the high-pressure phase could be quenched to ambient conditions. Pressure dependence of the Raman peaks suggested there existed four pressure regions related to different structural characters. We discussed these characters and inferred that the nonreversible structural transition in CaCrO4, most likely was from a zircon-type (I41/amd…
We report a Raman scattering study of polycrystalline CaCu$_3$Ti$_4$O$_{12}$ (CCTO) under pressure up to 5.32 GPa. The pressure dependence of several Raman modes was investigated. No anomalies have been observed on the phonon spectra thereby indicating that the T$_{h}$ (Im$\bar 3$) structure remains stable for pressures up to 5.32 GPa. The pressure coefficients for the observed modes were determined. This set of parameters was used for evaluating the stress developed in CCTO thin films.
It has long been puzzling regarding the atomistic origin of the pressure-induced Raman phonon stiffening that generally follows a polynomial expression with coefficients needing physical indication. Here we show that an extension of the bond-order-length-strength (BOLS) correlation mechanism to the pressure domain has led to an analytical solution to connect the pressure-induced Raman phonon stiffening directly to the bonding identities of the specimen and the response of the bonding identities to the applied stimulus. It is found that the pressure-induced blue-shift of Raman phonons arises fr…
In this work, we investigate calcium titanate (CaTiO3 - CTO) using X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy up to 60 and 55 GPa respectively. Both experiments show that the orthorhombic Pnma structure remains stable up to the highest pressures measured, in contradiction to ab-initio predictions. A fit of the compression data with a second-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state yields a bulk modulus K0 of 181.0(6) GPa. The orthorhombic distortion is found to increase slightly with pressure, in agreement with previous experiments at lower pressures and the general rules for the evolution of per…
High-pressure phase of boron oxide, orthorhombic \b{eta}-B2O3, has been studied in situ by synchrotron X-ray diffraction to 22 GPa and Raman scattering to 46 GPa at room temperature. The bulk modulus of \b{eta}-B2O3 has been found to be 169(3) GPa that is in good agreement with our ab initio calculations. Raman and IR spectra of \b{eta}-B2O3 have been measured at ambient pressure, all experimentally observed bands have been attributed to the theoretically calculated ones, and the mode assignment has been performed. Based on the data on Raman shift as a function of pressure, combined with equat…
Room-temperature Raman scattering was measured in ZnWO4 up to 45 GPa. We report the pressure dependence of all the Raman-active phonons of the low-pressure wolframite phase. As pressure increases new Raman peaks appear at 30.6 GPa due to the onset of a reversible structural phase transition to a distorted monoclinic b-fergusonite-type phase. The low- and high-pressure phases coexist from 30.6 GPa to 36.5 GPa. In addition to the Raman measurements we also report ab initio total-energy and lattice-dynamics calculations for the two phases. These calculations helped us to determine the crystalline…
X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering studies on scheelite structured barium molybdate show that, at 5.8 GPa, it undergoes a first order phase transition to fergusonite structure (I2/a, Z=4), asobserved in iso-structural barium tungstate. At still higher pressures, barium molybdate transform to another phase between 7.2-9.5 GPa. On release of pressure from 15.8 GPa, the initial phase is recovered implying that the observed structural modifications are reversible.
We discuss the influence of free carriers on the Raman scattering in $n$-type In$_2$O$_3$. For high-quality cubic single crystals, electronic single-particle excitations are revealed as a relatively broad Raman feature in the frequency range below 300~cm$^{-1}$. Furthermore, discrete phonon lines in the same frequency range exhibit asymmetric lineshapes characteristic for Fano resonances. The two observed spectral features contain the potential to be utilized for the quantitative determination of the free carrier concentration in $n$-type In$_2$O$_3$ using Raman spectroscopy as a contactless e…
We present an approach for the efficient calculation of vibrational Raman intensities in periodic systems within density functional theory. The Raman intensities are computed from the second order derivative of the electronic density matrix with respect to a uniform electric field. In contrast to previous approaches, the computational effort required by our method for the evaluation of the intensities is negligible compared to that required for the calculation of vibrational frequencies. As a first application, we study the signature of 3- and 4-membered rings in the the Raman spectra of sever…
A detailed high pressure study is carried out on 1T$^\prime$ MoTe$_{2}$ using X-ray diffraction(XRD) and Raman spectroscopy measurements upto about 30.5 GPa. High pressure XRD measurements show no structural transition. All the lattice parameters exhibit anomalous changes in the pressure region 8.4 to 12.7 GPa. Compressibility of the sample is found to be reduced by almost four times above 12.7 GPa with respect to that below 8.4 GPa. The anomalies in the Raman mode corresponding to the out of plane vibrations of Mo atoms sitting in the unit cell surface indicate a strong electron phonon coupli…
Pressure-dependent Raman scattering studies in the range 0.0 -- 32 kbar were carried out in L-alanine in order to investigate its external mode phonon spectra in relation to the phase transitions in the crystal. A careful analysis of the spectra shows that the low-energy Raman modes exhibit variation both in frequency and in intensity and between 26 and 28 kbar it is observed a splitting of a external mode, indicating that the D_2 normal phase undergoes a transition. Pressure coefficients for external modes are also given.
The effect of pressure on the Raman spectrum of PbWO4 has been investigated up to 48 GPa in a diamond-anvil cell using neon as pressure-transmitting medium. Changes are detected in the Raman spectrum at 6.8 GPa as a consequence of a structural phase transition from the tetragonal scheelite structure to the monoclinic PbWO4-III structure. Two additional phase transitions are detected at 15.5 and 21.2 GPa to the previously unknown crystalline phases IV and V. The last one remains stable up to 43.3 GPa. At 47.7 GPa all Raman modes disappear, which could be caused by a pressure-induced amorphizati…
We report high pressure Raman, synchrotron x-ray diffraction and electrical transport studies on Weyl semimetals NbP and TaP along with first-principles density functional theoretical (DFT) analysis. The frequencies of first-order Raman modes of NbP harden with increasing pressure and exhibit a slope change at P$_c$ $\sim$ 9 GPa, and its resistivity exhibits a minimum at P$_c$. The pressure-dependent volume of NbP exhibits a change in its bulk modulus from 207 GPa to 243 GPa at P$_c$. Using DFT calculations, we show that these anomalies are associated with pressure induced Lifshitz transition …
The complete set of structural parameters of the new series of compounds NiNb$_{2-x}$V$_x$O$_6$ ($0\leq x \leq 2$) with the unusual columbite-type structure is presented here. In the samples containing vanadium, this crystalline structure was stabilized by synthesis in conditions of high pressure and high temperature. Here we report here the first Raman spectrum for the NiV$_2$O$_6$-\textsl{Pbcn} polymorph and extend the list of the previously observed modes for the NiNb$_2$O$_6$. The evolution of the vibrational Raman spectrum produced when the vanadium is substituted for niobium along the se…
High-pressure synchrotron based angle dispersive x-ray diffraction (ADXRD) studies were carried out on SmGdO3 (SGO) up to 25.7GPa at room temperature. ADXRD results indicated a reversible pressure-induced phase transition from ambient monoclinic to hexagonal phase at about 8.9 GPa. The observed pressure-volume data were fitted into the third order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state yielding zero pressure bulk moduli B0 = 132(22) and 177(22) GPa for monoclinic and hexagonal phases, respectively. Pressure dependent micro-Raman spectroscopy further confirmed the phase transition. The mode Gruneise…
We have carried out temperature and pressure-dependent Raman and x-ray measurements on single crystals of Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. We attribute the observed anomalous temperature dependence of phonons to phonon-phonon anharmonic interactions. The quasiharmonic and anharmonic contributions to the temperature-dependent changes in phonon frequencies are estimated quantitatively using mode Grüneisen parameters derived from pressure-dependent Raman experiments and bulk modulus from high pressure x-ray measurements. Further, our Raman and x-ray data suggest a subtle structural deformation of the pyrochlor…
The pressure evolution of the Raman spectrum of graphene grown by chemical vapour deposition on polycrystalline copper is investigated with the use of a polar and a non-polar pressure transmitting medium (PTM). The G and 2D Raman bands exhibit similar pressure slopes for both PTM irrespectively of any unintentional initial doping and/or strain of the samples. Our analysis suggests that any pressure-induced charge transfer effects are negligibly small to influence the pressure response of graphene. This is determined by the mechanical stress due to the pressure-induced substrate contraction and…
We review recent development in Raman techniques and diamond anvil cell technology, that allow measurements of Raman of metals in the megabar pressure range. The Raman technique includes holographic transmission optics and single-stage spectrographs with CCD array detectors. Use of synthetic high-purity diamonds and anglular excitation geometry reduces spurious background scattering substantially, which makes observable very weak Raman peaks in metals. We give several examples of studies including the hexagonal close packed (hcp) $ε$-Fe, Fe$_{(1-x)}$Ni${_x}$, and Re and the recently discovered…
We report the pressure dependence of perovskite distortions in rare-earth (R) orthochromites (RCrO3) probed using Raman scattering in order to investigate the origin of structural transition from orthorhombic Pnma to rhombohedral R-3C phase in LaCrO3. The pressure induced changes in octahedral tilt modes demonstrates that tilt distortions are suppressed in LaCrO3 and are enhanced in the remaining members of RCrO3 family. This crossover between the two opposite pressure behaviors occurs at a critical R-ion radius of 1.20 Å. We attempted to establish the relation between this unusual crossover a…
Detailed high pressure Resonance Raman ($RR$) Spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction ($XRD$) studies are carried out on 3-4 layered $MoSe_2$ obtained by liquid exfoliation. Analysis of ambient $XRD$ pattern and $RR$ spectra indicate the presence of a triclinic phase along with its parent hexagonal phase. Pressure evolution of prominent Raman modes and their full width at half maximum ($FWHM$) show slope changes at about 13 GPa and 33 GPa, respectively. Slope change in the linear behavior of reduced pressure ($H$) with respect to Eulerian strain ($f_E$) is observed at about 13 GPa. A minimum in the…
We report the results of a low-temperature (300K-15K) high-pressure (up to 22GPa) Raman study of the Verwey transition in magnetite (Fe3O4). We use additional Raman modes observed below the Verwey transition to determine how the transition temperature changes with the quasihydrostatic pressure. Increase of the pressure results in the linear decrease of the Verwey transition temperature, with no discontinuity. The corresponding pressure coefficient dTV/dP is found to be ~ -5.2 K/GPa. Such a decrease is substantially larger than the one predicted by the mean-field Coulomb interaction model of th…
High pressure Raman spectroscopy of bulk 2H-MoTe$_2$ upto $\sim$ 29 GPa is shown to reveal two phase transitions (at $\sim$ 6 and 16.5 GPa), which are analyzed using first-principles density functional theoretical calculations. The transition at 6 GPa is marked by changes in the pressure coefficients of A$_{1g}$ and E$^{1}_{2g}$ Raman mode frequencies as well as in their relative intensity. Our calculations show that this is an isostructural semiconductor to a semimetal transition. The transition at $\sim$ 16.5 GPa is identified with the changes in linewidths of the Raman modes as well as in t…
The compression behavior of delafossite compound CuCrO2 has been investigated by in-situ x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopic measurements upto 23.2 and 34 GPa respectively. X-ray diffraction data shows the stability of ambient rhombohedral structure upto ~ 23 GPa. Material shows large anisotropy in axial compression with c-axis compressibility, c= 1.2610-3(1) GPa-1 and a-axis compressibility, a= 8.9010-3(6) GPa-1. Our XRD data shows an irreversible broadening of diffraction peaks. Pressure volume data when fitted to 3rd order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state gives the value of bulk modu…
We report a study of the structural phase transitions induced by pressure in bulk black phosphorus by using both synchrotron x-ray diffraction for pressures up to 12.2 GPa and Raman spectroscopy up to 18.2 GPa. Very recently black phosphorus attracted large attention because of the unique properties of fewlayers samples (phosphorene), but some basic questions are still open in the case of the bulk system. As concerning the presence of a Raman spectrum above 10 GPa, which should not be observed in an elemental simple cubic system, we propose a new explanation by attributing a key role to the no…
Antiferromagnetic materials with strong spin-phonon coupling have the potential for spintronic applications. Here, we report the structural, magnetic, and vibrational properties of 12R-BaTi0.4Mn0.6O3. Temperature-dependent magnetization data show the presence of weak antiferromagnetic interactions. Correlation between magnetic and vibrational properties are probed by using temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopic measurements. Two of the Raman active phonons show deviation from anharmonic behaviour at low temperatures which can be attributed to spin-phonon coupling. The strength of coupling i…
We present studies of the photoluminescence (PL), absorption and Raman scattering from poly[2,7-(9,9'-bis(2-ethylhexyl))fluorene] under hydrostatic pressures of 0-100 kbar at room temperature. The well-defined PL and associated vibronics that are observed at atmospheric pressure change dramatically around 20 kbar in the bulk sample and at around 35 kbar for the thin film sample. Beyond these pressures the PL emission from the backbone is swamped by strong peaks due to aggregates and keto defects in the 2.1-2.6 eV region. The Raman peaks shift to higher energies and exhibit unexpected antireson…
The structure of dielectric perovskite BaZrO$_3$, long known to be cubic at room temperature without any structural phase transition with variation of temperature, has been recently disputed to have different ground state structures with lower symmetries involving octahedra rotation. The pressure-dependent Raman scattering measurements can identify the hierarchy of energetically-adjacent polymorphs, helping in turn understand its ground state structure at atmospheric pressure. Here, Raman scattering spectra of high-quality BaZrO$_3$ single crystals grown by the optical floating zone method are…
We have investigated the behavior of the PbZr(0.94}Ti(0.06)O3 Raman spectra as a function of Hydrostatic pressures. The new structural phases were identified based on previous works performed in PZT system with different Ti concentrations at room- and high pressures. We showed that PbZr(0.94}Ti(0.06}O3 exhibits a rich phase sequence up to 3.7 GPa: rhombohedral(LT) {0.3 GPa} orthorhombic(I) {2.9 GPa} orthorhombic(I'). This sequence is different from that exhibited by PbZr(0.90)Ti(0.10)O3 suggesting a very interesting concentration-pressure phase diagram for rich Zr PZT system.
The pressure dependent phonon modes of predominant wurtzite InAs nanowires has been investigated in a diamond anvil cell under hydrostatic pressure up to 58 GPa. The TO and LO at Gamma point and other optical phonon frequencies increase linearly while the LO TO splitting decreases with pressure. The recorded Raman modes have been used to determine the mode Gruneisen parameters and also the value of Borns transverse effective charge. The calculated Borns transverse effective charge exhibits a linear reduction with increasing pressure implying an increase in covalency of nanowires under compress…
We present a technique for extracting Raman intensities from ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) simulations at high temperature. The method is applied to the highly anharmonic case of dense hydrogen up to 500 K for pressures ranging from 180 GPa to 300 GPa. On heating or pressurizing we find first-order phase transitions at the experimental conditions of the phase III - IV boundary. Direct comparison of Raman vibrons with experiment provides excellent discrimination between subtly different structures, found in MD. We find candidate structures whose Raman spectra are in good agreement with expe…
We describe the identification of single- and few- layer boron nitride. Its optical contrast is much smaller than that of graphene but even monolayers are discernable by optimizing viewing conditions. Raman spectroscopy can be used to confirm BN monolayers. They exhibit an upshift in the fundamental Raman mode by up to 4 cm-1. The number of layers in thicker crystals can be counted by exploiting an integer-step increase in the Raman intensity and optical contrast.
We perform Raman spectroscopy studies on $α$-RuCl$_3$ at room temperature to explore its phase transitions of magnetism and chemical bonding under pressures. The Raman measurements resolve two critical pressures, about $p_1=1.1$~GPa and $p_2=1.7$~GPa, involving very different intertwining behaviors between the structural and magnetic excitations. With increasing pressures, a stacking order phase transition of $α$-RuCl$_3$ layers develops at $p_1=1.1$~GPa, indicated by the new Raman phonon modes and the modest Raman magnetic susceptibility adjustment. The abnormal softening and splitting of the…
We present results of lattice dynamics calculations of the $P-V$ equation of state and the pressure dependence of the Raman-active $E_{2g}$ lattice phonon for $p-$H$_2$ and $o-$D$_2$ in a wide pressure range up to $\sim$2 Mbar using our recently developed semi-empirical many-body potential, and density-functional theory. Comparison with existing body of experimental and theoretical results showed that the employed many-body potential is a reliable basis for high-precision calculations for phases I, II, and III of solid hydrogens.
We report the evolution of charge density wave states under pressure for two NbS3 phases triclinic (phase I) and monoclinic (phase II) at room temperature. Raman and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques are applied. The x-ray studies on the monoclinic phase under pressure show a compression of the lattice at different rates below and above 7 GPa but without a change in space group symmetry. The Raman spectra of the two phases evolve similarly with pressure; all peaks almost disappear in the 6-8 GPa range, indicating a transition from an insulating to a metallic state, and peaks at new positions …
Alkaline-earth metal oxides, in particular MgO and CaO dominate Earths lower mantle, therefore, exploring high pressure behavior of this class of compounds is of significant geophysical research interest. Among all these compounds, BaO exhibits rich polymorphism in the pressure range of 0-1.5 Mbar. Static enthalpy calculations revealed that BaO undergoes a pressure induced structural phase transition from NaCl-type (B1) $\rightarrow$ NiAs-type (B8) $\rightarrow$ distorted CsCl-type (d-B2) $\rightarrow$ CsCl-type (B2) at 5.1, 19.5, 120 GPa respectively. B1 $\rightarrow$ B8 $\&$ B8 $\rightarrow$…
Raman spectra of the MgB2 ceramic samples were measured as a function of pressure up to 32 GPa at room temperature. The spectrum at normal conditions contains a very broad peak at ~590 cm-1 related to the E2g phonon mode. The frequency of this mode exhibits a strong linear dependence in the pressure region from 5 to 18 GPa, whereas beyond this region the slope of the pressure-induced frequency shift is reduced by about a factor of two. The pressure dependence of the phonon mode up to ~ 5GPa exhibits a change in the slope as well as a "hysteresis" effect in the frequency vs. pressure behavior. …
Raman spectroscopy has become an essential technique to characterize and investigate graphene and many other two-dimensional materials. However, there still lacks consensus on the Raman signature and phonon dispersion of atomically thin boron nitride (BN), which has many unique properties distinct from graphene. Such a knowledge gap greatly affects the understanding of basic physical and chemical properties of atomically thin BN as well as the use of Raman spectroscopy to study these nanomaterials. Here, we use both experiment and simulation to reveal the intrinsic Raman signature of monolayer…
We present and evaluate an efficient method for simulating Raman spectra from molecular dynamics (MD) calculations {\it without} defining normal modes. We apply the method to high pressure hydrogen in the high-temperature "Phase IV": a plastic crystal in which the conventional picture of fixed phonon eigenmodes breaks down. Projecting trajectories onto in-phase molecular stretches is shown to be many orders of magnitude faster than polarisability calculations, allowing statistical averaging at high-temperature. The simulations are extended into metastable regimes and identify several regimes a…

Monolayers of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) can in principle be identified by a Raman signature, consisting of an upshift in the frequency of the E2g vibrational mode with respect to the bulk value, but the origin of this shift (intrinsic or support-induced) is still debated. Herein we use density functional theory calculations to investigate whether there is an intrinsic Raman shift in the h-BN monolayer in comparison with the bulk. There is universal agreement among all tested functionals in predicting the magnitude of the frequency shift upon a variation in the in-plane cell parameter. It …
Ferroic domain walls are currently investigated by several state-of-the art techniques in order to get a better understanding of their distinct, functional properties. Here, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of Raman maps is used to study ferroelectric domain walls (DWs) in LiNbO3 and ferroelastic DWs in NdGaO3. It is shown that PCA allows to quickly and reliably identify small Raman peak variations at ferroelectric DWs and that the value of a peak shift can be deduced - accurately and without a-priori - from a first order Taylor expansion of the spectra. The ability of PCA to separate the co…
The potential of silicon nanowires (SiNWs), (diameter < 10 nm) to transform into rigid bundle-like structures with distinct phonon confinement under high pressure (<= 15 GPa), instead of amorphising as per previous reports, is demonstrated using in-situ Raman spectroscopy. The newly observed splitting of the second order transverse optical (2TO) Raman mode into 2TO(L) and 2TO(W) phonon modes at >= 5 GPa establishes a highly anisotropic and mode-dependent pressure response of these SiNWs. Properties of the novel structures are superior compared to other nano-structured silicon and bulk-Si in te…
Transition metal dichalcogenide MoTe$_2$ is an important candidate for realizing the newly predicted type-IIWeyl fermions, for which the breaking of the inversion symmetry is a prerequisite. Here we present direct spectroscopic evidence for the inversion symmetry breaking in the low temperature phase of MoTe$_2$ by systematic Raman experiments and first principles calculations. We identify five lattice vibrational modes which are Raman active only in noncentrosymmetric structure at low temperature. A hysteresis is also observed in the peak intensity of inversion symmetry activated Raman modes,…
BiTeI is a giant Rashba spin splitting system, in which a non-centro symmetric topological phase has recently been suggested to appear under high pressure. We investigated the optical properties of this compound, reflectivity and transmission, under pressures up to $15$ GPa. The gap feature in the optical conductivity vanishes above $p \sim 9$ GPa and does not reappear up to at least $15$ GPa. The plasma edge, associated with intrinsically doped charge carriers, is smeared out through a phase transition at $9$ GPa. Using high pressure Raman spectroscopy, we follow the vibrational modes of BiTe…
Cubic boron phosphide BP has been studied in situ by X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering up to 55 GPa at 300 K in a diamond anvil cell. The bulk modulus of B0 = 174(2) GPa has been established, which is in excellent agreement with our ab initio calculations. The data on Raman shift as a function of pressure, combined with equation-of-state data, allowed us to estimate the Grüneisen parameters of the TO and LO modes of zinc-blende structure, γGTO = 1.16 and γGLO = 1.04, just like in the case of other AIIIBV diamond-like phases, for which γGTO > γGLO = 1. We also established that the pressure…
Raman scattering measurements and lattice-dynamics calculations have been performed on magnesium tungstate under high pressure up to 41 GPa. Experiments have been carried out under a selection of different pressure-media. The influence of non-hydrostaticity on the structural properties of MgWO4 and isomorphic compounds is examined. Under quasi-hydrostatic conditions a phase transition has been found at 26 GPa in MgWO4. The high-pressure phase has been tentatively assigned to a triclinic structure similar to that of CuWO4. We also report and discuss the Raman symmetries, frequencies, and pressu…
The recent progress in generating static pressures up to terapascal values opens opportunities for studying novel materials with unusual properties, such as metallization of hydrogen and high-temperature superconductivity. However, an evaluation of pressure above ~0.3 terapascal is a challenge. We report a universal high-pressure scale up to ~0.5 terapascal, based on the shift of the Raman edge of stressed diamond anvils correlated with the equation of state of Au and does not require an additional pressure sensor. According to the new scale, the pressure values are substantially lower by 20% …
We report high pressure X-ray diffraction and a detailed systematic Raman measurements on $ReS_2$ sample, which is mechanically exfoliated from a single crystal. A few new Bragg peaks are observed to emerge above 6 GPa indicating a structural transition from distorted $1T$ to distorted $1T$$^{\prime}$ in triclinic structure. The same is corroborated by appearance of new Raman modes in the same pressure range. Softening of the Raman modes corresponding to $Re$ atom vibrations are observed in the distorted $1T$$^{\prime}$ phase in the pressure range 15-25 GPa. In the same pressure range the anom…
The appearance of a broad peak at $\sim$1550 cm$^{-1}$ (G$^{-}$ peak) in carbon nanotube resonant Raman scattering spectra has been conventionally attributed to the presence of metallic nanotubes. Here, we present resonant Raman measurements on macroscopic nanotube ensembles enriched in armchair species prepared through density gradient ultracentrifugation. Our data clearly demonstrate that the broad G$^{-}$ mode is absent for armchair structures and appears only when the excitation laser is resonant with non-armchair "metals." Due to the large number ($\sim$10$^{10}$) of nanotubes across seve…
Two-dimensional layered trichalcogenide materials have recently attracted the attention of the scientific community because of its robust mechanical, thermal properties and applications in opto and nanoelectronics devices. We report the pressure dependence of out-of plane Ag Raman modes in high quality few-layers titanium trisulfide (TiS3) nanoribbons grown using a direct solid-gas reaction method and infer their cross-plane thermal expansion coefficient. Both mechanical stability and thermal properties of the TiS3 nanoribbons are elucidated using phonon-spectrum analyses. Raman spectroscopic s…
Recently discovered class of 2D materials based on transition metal phosphorous trichalcogenides exhibit antiferromagnetic ground state, with potential applications in spintronics. Amongst them, FePS$ _{3} $ is a Mott insulator with a band gap of $\sim$ 1.5 eV. This study using Raman spectroscopy along with first-principles density functional theoretical analysis examines the stability of its structure and electronic properties under pressure. Raman spectroscopy reveals two phase transitions at 4.6 GPa and 12 GPa marked by the changes in pressure coefficients of the mode frequencies and the nu…
We use Raman spectroscopy in tandem with transmission electron microscopy and DFT simulations to show that extreme (GPa) pressure converts the phase of silicon nanowires from cubic (Si-I) to hexagonal (Si-IV) while preserving the nanowire's cylindrical morphology. In situ Raman scattering of the TO mode demonstrates the high-pressure Si-I to Si-II phase transition near 9 GPa. Raman signal of the TO phonon shows a decrease in intensity in the range 9 to 14 GPa. Then, at 17 GPa, it is no longer detectable, indicating a second phase change (Si-II to Si-V) in the 14 to 17 GPa range. Recovery of ex…
In this paper we report a new high-pressure rhombohedral phase of Ce2Zr2O8 observed from high-pressure angle-dispersive x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy studies up to nearly 12 GPa. The ambient-pressure cubic phase of Ce2Zr2O8 transforms to a rhombohedral structure beyond 5 GPa with a feeble distortion in the lattice. Pressure evolution of unit-cell volume showed a change in compressibility above 5 GPa. The unit-cell parameters of the high-pressure rhombohedral phase at 12.1 GPa are ah = 14.6791(3) Å, ch = 17.9421(5) Å, V = 3348.1(1) Å3. The structure relation between the parent cubic …
