It has long been puzzling regarding the atomistic origin of the pressure-induced Raman phonon stiffening that generally follows a polynomial expression with coefficients needing physical indication. Here we show that an extension of the bond-order-length-strength (BOLS) correlation mechanism to the pressure domain has led to an analytical solution to connect the pressure-induced Raman phonon stiffening directly to the bonding identities of the specimen and the response of the bonding identities to the applied stimulus. It is found that the pressure-induced blue-shift of Raman phonons arises from the bond compression and energy storage exerted by the compressive stress. Agreement between predictions and experimental measurement leads to the detailed form for the polynomial coefficients, which offer an atomic understanding of the physical mechanism of the external pressure induced energy gain, thermally induced bond expansion as well as means of determining the mode atomic cohesive energy in a specimen.
In this article, we estimate hydrostatic stress developed in gallium ion implanted gallium nitride epitaxial layers using Raman measurements. We have calculated deformation potential constants for $E_2$(high) mode in these epi-layers. The presence of a polar phonon-plasmon coupling in these systems has also been demonstrated. In as-implanted samples, with an increase in implantation fluence, we have observed disorder-activated Raman scattering.
We report a detailed study of the strong near-field Raman scattering enhancement which takes place in tip-enhanced Raman scattering (TERS) in indium nitride. In addition to the well-known first-order optical phonons of indium nitride, near-field Raman modes, not detectable in the far-field, appear when approaching the plasmonic probe. The frequencies of these modes coincide with calculated energies of second order combinational modes consisting of optical zone center phonons and acoustic phonons at the edge of the Brillouin zone. The appearance of strong combinational modes suggests that TERS …
We report non-resonant x-ray Raman scattering (XRS) measurements from hexagonal boron nitride for transferred momentum from 2 to 9 $\mathrmÅ^{-1}$ along directions both in and out of the basal plane. A symmetry-based argument, together with real-space full multiple scattering calculations of the projected density of states in the spherical harmonics basis, reveals that a strong pre-edge feature is a dominantly $Y_{10}$-type Frenkel exciton with no other \textit{s}-, \textit{p}-, or \textit{d}- components. This conclusion is supported by a second, independent calculation of the \textbf{q}-depen…
In this work, ZnO nanowire arrays decorated with titanium nitride (TiN) nanoparticles as surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates is demonstrated. ZnO nanowires were grown by hydrothermal synthesis while ~100 nm TiN nanoparticles were obtained by grinding commercial powders for several hours. They were then decorated on the ZnO nanowire arrays using acetone as the medium. Scanning electron microscopy confirmed the presence of TiN nanoparticles on the ZnO nanowires. TiN nanoparticles exhibited localized surface plasmon resonances at 430, 520 and 600 nm. SERS experiments using Nile Bl…
High pressure Raman experiments on Boron Nitride multi-walled nanotubes show that the intensity of the vibrational mode at ~ 1367 cm-1 vanishes at ~ 12 GPa and it does not recover under decompression. In comparison, the high pressure Raman experiments on hexagonal Boron Nitride show a clear signature of a phase transition from hexagonal to wurtzite at ~ 13 GPa which is reversible on decompression. These results are contrasted with the pressure behavior of carbon nanotubes and graphite.
Atomically thin boron nitride (BN) nanosheets have been found an excellent substrate for noble metal particles enabled surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), thanks to their good adsorption of aromatic molecules, high thermal stability and weak Raman scattering. Faceted gold (Au) nanoparticles have been synthesized on BN nanosheets by a simple but controllable and reproducible sputtering and annealing method. The size and density of the Au particles can be controlled by sputtering time, current and annealing temperature etc. Under the same sputtering and annealing conditions, the Au parti…
Raman spectroscopy has become an essential technique to characterize and investigate graphene and many other two-dimensional materials. However, there still lacks consensus on the Raman signature and phonon dispersion of atomically thin boron nitride (BN), which has many unique properties distinct from graphene. Such a knowledge gap greatly affects the understanding of basic physical and chemical properties of atomically thin BN as well as the use of Raman spectroscopy to study these nanomaterials. Here, we use both experiment and simulation to reveal the intrinsic Raman signature of monolayer…
We describe the identification of single- and few- layer boron nitride. Its optical contrast is much smaller than that of graphene but even monolayers are discernable by optimizing viewing conditions. Raman spectroscopy can be used to confirm BN monolayers. They exhibit an upshift in the fundamental Raman mode by up to 4 cm-1. The number of layers in thicker crystals can be counted by exploiting an integer-step increase in the Raman intensity and optical contrast.
Monolayers of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) can in principle be identified by a Raman signature, consisting of an upshift in the frequency of the E2g vibrational mode with respect to the bulk value, but the origin of this shift (intrinsic or support-induced) is still debated. Herein we use density functional theory calculations to investigate whether there is an intrinsic Raman shift in the h-BN monolayer in comparison with the bulk. There is universal agreement among all tested functionals in predicting the magnitude of the frequency shift upon a variation in the in-plane cell parameter. It …
Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a useful multidisciplinary analytic technique. However, it is still a challenge to produce SERS substrates that are highly sensitive, reproducible, stable, reusable, and scalable. Here, we demonstrate that atomically thin boron nitride (BN) nanosheets have many unique and desirable properties to help solve this challenge. The synergic effect of the atomic thickness, high flexibility, stronger surface adsorption capability, electrical insulation, impermeability, high thermal and chemical stability of BN nanosheets can increase the Raman sensitivity …
Raman spectroscopy, a fast and nondestructive imaging method, can be used to monitor the doping level in graphene devices. We fabricated chemical vapor deposition (CVD) grown graphene on atomically flat hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) flakes and SiO$_2$ substrates. We compared their Raman response as a function of charge carrier density using an ion gel as a top gate. The G peak position, 2D peak position, 2D peak width and the ratio of the 2D peak area to the G peak area show a dependence on carrier density that differs for hBN compared to SiO$_2$. Histograms of two-dimensional mapping are used…
The possibility of modification of the local properties of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) by laser irradiation is investigated. Investigations conducted using both Raman spectroscopy and electrostatic force microscopy were performed. Laser light induced modifications are found to cause no structural changes. However, they have impact on Raman spectra and local charge state of the material. They are also shown to be stable in time and during electrical grounding of the sample. The mechanism of photoionization of deep defects present in h-BN is proposed to explain the observed phenomenon. The di…
We present low-temperature Raman measurements on gate tunable graphene encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride, which allows to study in detail the Raman G and 2D mode frequencies and line widths as function of the charge carrier density. We observe a clear softening of the Raman G mode (of up to 2.5 cm$^{-1}$) at low carrier density due to the phonon anomaly and a residual G~mode line width of $\approx$ 3.5 cm$^{-1}$ at high doping. From analyzing the G mode dependence on doping and laser power we extract an electron-phonon-coupling constant of $\approx$ 4.4 $\times$ 10$^{-3}$ (for the G mode…
The structural modifications of polycrystalline hexagonal boron nitride implanted with He+ ion beams at energies between 200 keV and 1.2 MeV to fluences of 1.0 \times 1017 ions \cdot cm-2 were investigated using micro-Raman spectroscopy. The measured Raman spectra show evidence of implantation-induced structural transformations from the hexagonal phase to nanocrystalline cubic boron nitride, rhombohedral boron nitride and amorphous boron nitride phases. The first-order Longitudinal-Optical cBN phonon was observed to be downshifted and asymmetrically broadened and this was explained using the s…
Tellurium can form nanowires of helical atomic chains. Given their unique one-dimensional van der Waals structure, these nanowires are expected to show remarkably different physical and electronic properties than bulk tellurium. Here we show that few-chain and single-chain van der Waals tellurium nanowires can be isolated using carbon nanotube and boron nitride nanotube encapsulation. With the approach, the number of atomic chains can be controlled by the inner diameter of the nanotube. The Raman response of the structures suggests that the interaction between a single-atomic tellurium chain a…
We present a transfer-free preparation method for graphene on hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) crystals by chemical vapor deposition of graphene via a catalytic proximity effect, i.e. activated by a Cu catalyst close-by . We demonstrate the full coverage by monolayer graphene of half-millimeter-sized hexagonal boron nitride crystals exfoliated on a copper foil prior to growth. We demonstrate that the proximity of the copper catalyst ensures high yield with the growth rate estimated between of 2μm/min to 5μm/min . Optical and electron microscopies together with confocal micro-Raman mapping confir…
We report the first experiments on the high pressure phonon spectra of transition-metal nitrides HfN, ZrN, and NbN, obtained by Raman scattering measurements. Two pronounced bands, which are related to the acoustic part at low frequency around 200 cm$^{-1}$ and the optical part at high frequency around 550 cm$^{-1}$ of the phonon spectrum, respectively, shift to high frequency values with increasing pressure. An analysis of the results allows us to reproduce the experimental pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ of ZrN and NbN.
We present results for the optical absorption spectra of small-diameter single-wall carbon and boron nitride nanotubes obtained by {\it ab initio} calculations in the framework of time-dependent density functional theory. We compare the results with those obtained for the corresponding layered structures, i.e. the graphene and hexagonal BN sheets. In particular, we focus on the role of depolarization effects, anisotropies and interactions in the excited states. We show that already the random phase approximation reproduces well the main features of the spectra when crystal local field effects …
Search of materials with C-N composition hold a great promise in creating materials which would rival diamond in hardness due to the very strong and relatively low-ionic C-N bond. Early experimental and theoretical works on C-N compounds were based on structural similarity with binary A3B4 structural- types; however, the synthesis of C3N4 remains elusive. Here we explored an unbiased synthesis from the elemental materials at high pressures and temperatures. Using in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy we demonstrate synthesis of highly incompressible Pnnm CN compound with…
Hexagonal boron nitride (BN), one of the very few layered insulators, plays a crucial role in 2D materials research. In particular, BN grown with a high pressure technique has proven to be an excellent substrate material for graphene and related 2D materials, but at the same time very hard to replace. Here we report on a method of growth at atmospheric pressure as a true alternative for producing BN for high quality graphene/BN heterostructures. The process is not only more scalable, but also allows to grow isotopically purified BN crystals. We employ Raman spectroscopy, cathodoluminescence, a…
We present a combined theoretical and experimental study of the electronic structure and equation of state (EOS) of crystalline PdN2. The compound forms above 58 GPa in the pyrite structure and is metastable down to 11 GPa. We show that the EOS cannot be accurately described within either the local density or generalized gradient approximations. The Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof exchange-correlation functional (HSE06), however, provides very good agreement with experimental data. We explain the strong pressure dependence of the Raman intensities in terms of a similar dependence of the calculated ban…
III-VI post-transition metal chalcogenides (InSe and GaSe) are a new class of layered semiconductors, which feature a strong variation of size and type of their band gaps as a function of number of layers (N). Here, we investigate exfoliated layers of InSe and GaSe ranging from bulk crystals down to monolayer, encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride, using Raman spectroscopy. We present the N-dependence of both intralayer vibrations within each atomic layer, as well as of the interlayer shear and layer breathing modes. A linear chain model can be used to describe the evolution of the peak posi…
Transparent and colorless hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) single crystals were grown from the Mg-B-N system using high-pressure high-temperature cubic anvil technique. By varying the synthesis conditions we could determine the sequence of phase transformations occurring in the Mg-B-N system, construct the pressure-temperature (P-T) phase diagram and discuss the possible growth mechanism. The largest plate-like-shaped hBN crystals with sizes up to 2.5 mm in length and up to 10 (micro)m in thickness were grown at 30 kbar and 1900-2100 °C. The hBN crystals exhibited strong, narrow diffraction peaks…

Group III nitride based two-dimensional multi-quantum well (MQW) nanostructures find remarkable applications in the visible to ultraviolet light sources. The interface optical (IFO) phonon modes in a c-axis oriented superlattice of [Al0.35Ga0.65N (~1.75 nm)/Al0.55Ga0.45N (~2nm)]20 MQWs are observed using tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopic (TERS) studies. The near-field studies using TERS probe with an Au spherical nanoparticle of ~ 200 nm diameter were carried out at ambient conditions showing approximately two to three orders of enhancement in the Raman intensities. The interface phonon mode be…
Diamond heat-spreaders for gallium nitride (GaN) devices currently depend upon a robust wafer bonding process. Bonding-free membrane methods demonstrate potential, however, chemical vapour deposition (CVD) of diamond directly onto a III-nitride (III-N) heterostructure membrane induces significant thermal stresses. In this work, these thermal stresses are investigated using an analytical approach, a numerical model and experimental validation. The thermal stresses are caused by the mismatch in the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) between the GaN/III-N stack, silicon (Si) and the diamond f…
Phonon-phonon anharmonic effects have a strong influence on the phonon spectrum; most prominent manifestation of these effects are the softening (shift in frequency) and broadening (change in FWHM) of the phonon modes at finite temperature. Using Raman spectroscopy, we studied the temperature dependence of the FWHM and Raman shift of $\mathrm{E_{2g}^1}$ and $\mathrm{A_{1g}}$ modes for single-layer and natural bilayer MoS$_2$ over a broad range of temperatures ($8 < $T$ < 300$ K). Both the Raman shift and FWHM of these modes show linear temperature dependence for $T>100$ K, whereas they become …
Raman scattering is a ubiquitous phenomenon in light-matter interactions which reveals a material's electronic, structural and thermal properties. Controlling this process would enable new ways of studying and manipulating fundamental material properties. Here, we report a novel Raman scattering process at the interface between different van der Waals (vdW) materials as well as between a monolayer semiconductor and 3D crystalline substrates. We find that interfacing a WSe2 monolayer with materials such as SiO2, sapphire, and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) enables Raman transitions with phonons …
Tuning the electron-phonon interaction via exploring the interrelation between Urbach energy and Fano-type asymmetric Raman line shape in GO-hBN nanocomposites
Heterostructures made from van der Waals materials provide a template to investigate proximity effects at atomically sharp heterointerfaces. In particular, near-field charge and energy transfer in heterostructures made from semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) have attracted interest to design model 2D "donor-acceptor" systems and new optoelectronic components. Here, using of Raman scattering and photoluminescence spectroscopies, we report a comprehensive characterization of a molybedenum diselenide (MoSe$_2$) monolayer deposited onto hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and capped b…
The integration of advanced optoelectronic properties in nanoscale devices of group III nitride can be realized by understanding the coupling of charge carriers with optical excitations in these nanostructures. The native defect induced electron-phonon coupling in GaN nanowires are reported using various spectroscopic studies. The GaN nanowires having different native defects are grown in atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition technique. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis revealed the variation of Ga/N ratios in nanowires having possible native defects, with respect to their gr…
The search for ultra hard materials is inevitable in high pressure device applications. Nitrides of group-14 elements have been foreseen as potential candidates in replacing existing hard materials. In a recent experiment, pyrite structures of SiN2, GeN2 and SnN2 have been synthesized at high pressure and were shown to have high bulk modulus. Though their existence and bulk modulus are known, limited studies have been devoted to SiN2, GeN2 and SnN2. In the present work, we perform first-principles calculations to investigate structural, electronic, mechanical and vibrational properties at ambi…
