Heterostructures made from van der Waals materials provide a template to investigate proximity effects at atomically sharp heterointerfaces. In particular, near-field charge and energy transfer in heterostructures made from semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) have attracted interest to design model 2D "donor-acceptor" systems and new optoelectronic components. Here, using of Raman scattering and photoluminescence spectroscopies, we report a comprehensive characterization of a molybedenum diselenide (MoSe$_2$) monolayer deposited onto hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and capped by mono- and bilayer graphene. Along with the atomically flat hBN susbstrate, a single graphene epilayer is sufficient to passivate the MoSe$_2$ layer and provides a homogenous environment without the need for an extra capping layer. As a result, we do not observe photo-induced doping in our heterostructure and the MoSe$_2$ excitonic linewidth gets as narrow as 1.6~meV, hence approaching the homogeneous limit. The semi-metallic graphene layer neutralizes the 2D semiconductor and enables picosecond non-radiative energy transfer that quenches radiative recombination from long-lived states. Hence, emission from the neutral band edge exciton largely dominates the photoluminescence spectrum of the MoSe$_2$/graphene heterostructure. Since this exciton has a picosecond radiative lifetime at low temperature, comparable with the energy transfer time, its low-temperature photoluminescence is only quenched by a factor of $3.3 \pm 1$ and $4.4 \pm 1$ in the presence of mono- and bilayer graphene, respectively. Finally, while our bare MoSe$_2$ on hBN exhibits negligible valley polarization at low temperature and under near-resonant excitation, we show that interfacing MoSe$_2$ with graphene yields a single-line emitter with degrees of valley polarization and coherence up to $\sim 15\,\%$.
The inherently low photoluminescence (PL) yields in as prepared transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers are broadly accepted to be the result of atomic vacancies (i.e. defects) and uncontrolled doping, which give rise to non-radiative exciton decay pathways. To date, a number of chemical passivation schemes have been successfully developed to improve PL in sulphur based TMDs i.e. molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) and tungsten disulphide (WS2) monolayers. Reports on solution based chemical passivation schemes for improving PL yields in selenium (Se) based TMDs are lacking I comparison, with…
We present magneto-photoluminescence measurements in a hybrid 2D semiconductor/ferromagnetic structure consisting of MoSe2/hBN/Ni. When the Nickel layer is magnetized, we observe circularly polarized photoluminescence of the trion peak in MoSe2 monolayer under linearly polarized excitation. This build-up of circular polarization can reach a measured value of about 4% when the magnetization of Ni is saturated perpendicularly to the sample plane, and changes its sign when the magnetization is reversed. The circular polarization decreases when the hBN barrier thickness increases. These results ar…

Two-dimensional (2D) materials, such as graphene1, boron nitride2, and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs)3-5, have sparked wide interest in both device physics and technological applications at the atomic monolayer limit. These 2D monolayers can be stacked together with precise control to form novel van der Waals heterostructures for new functionalities2,6-9. One highly coveted but yet to be realized heterostructure is that of differing monolayer TMDs with type II band alignment10-12. Their application potential hinges on the fabrication, understanding, and control of bonded monolayers, w…
Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) is a promising platform for new generation optoelectronics and nanophotonics due to their unique optical properties. However, in contrast to direct bandgap TMDs monolayers, bulk samples have an indirect bandgap that restricts their application as light emitters. On the other hand, the high refractive index of these materials seems ideal for creating high-quality nanophotonic resonators with a strong Purcell effect. In this work, we fabricate Whispering-gallery mode (WGM) resonators from bulk (i.e., indirect bandgap) MoSe$_2$ using resistless scanning pro…
Evaluation of the defect levels in low-dimensional materials is an important aspect of quantum science. In this article, we report a facile synthesis method of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and evaluate the defects and their light emission characteristics. The thermal annealing procedure is optimized to obtain clean h-BN. The UV-Vis spectroscopy shows the optical energy gap of 5.28 eV which is comparable to the reported energy gap for exfoliated, clean h-BN samples. The optimized synthesis route of h-BN has generated two kinds of defects which are characterised using room temperature photolum…
Hexagonal boron nitride is widely used as a substrate for two-dimensional materials in both electronic and photonic devices. Here, we demonstrate that two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride is also an ideal substrate for one-dimensional single-walled carbon nanotubes. Nanotubes directly attached to hexagonal boron nitride show bright photoluminescence with narrow linewidth at room temperature, comparable to air-suspended nanotubes. Using photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy, we unambiguously assign the chiralities of nanotubes on boron nitride by tracking individual tubes before and afte…
In van der Waals heterostructures, the relative alignment of bands between layers, and the resulting band hybridisation, are key factors in determining a range of electronic properties. This work examines these effects for heterostructures of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), an ubiquitous combination given the role of hBN as an encapsulating material. By comparing results of density functional calculations with experimental angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) results, we explore the hybridisation between the valence states of the TMD and …
Stacking atomic monolayers of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) has emerged as an effective way to engineer their properties. In principle, the staggered band alignment of TMD heterostructures should result in the formation of inter-layer excitons with long lifetimes and robust valley polarization. However, these features have been observed simultaneously only in MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ heterostructures. Here we report on the observation of long lived inter-layer exciton emission in a MoS$_2$/MoSe$_2$/MoS$_2$ trilayer van der Waals heterostructure. The inter-layer nature of the o…
Van der Waals heterostuctures, made from stacks of two-dimensional materials, exhibit unique light-matter interactions and are promising for novel optoelectronic devices. The performance of such devices is governed by near-field coupling through, e.g., interlayer charge and/or energy transfer. New concepts and experimental methodologies are needed to properly describe two-dimensional heterointerfaces. Here, we report on interlayer charge and energy transfer in atomically thin metal (graphene)/semiconductor (transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD, here MoSe$_2$)) heterostructures using a combinat…
Single layers of MoS2 and MoSe2 were optically pumped with circularly polarized light and an appreciable polarization was initialized as the pump energy was varied. The circular polarization of the emitted photoluminescence was monitored as function of the difference between the excitation energy and the A-exciton emission at the K-point of the Brillouin zone. Our results show a threshold of twice the LA phonon energy, specific to the material, above which phonon-assisted intervalley scattering causes depolarization. In both materials this lead to almost complete depolarization within ~100 meV…
We present photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy measurements of single-layer MoSe2 as a function of uniform uniaxial strain. A simple clamping and bending method is described that allows for application of uniaxial strain to layered, 2D materials with strains up to 1.1% without slippage. Using this technique, we find that the electronic band gap of single layer MoSe2 can be reversibly tuned by -27 +- 2 meV per percent of strain. This is in agreement with our density-functional theory calculations, which estimate a modulation of -32 meV per percent of strain, taking into account the role of defo…

Semiconducting ferromagnet-nonmagnet interfaces in van der Waals heterostructures present a unique opportunity to investigate magnetic proximity interactions dependent upon a multitude of phenomena including valley and layer pseudospins, moiré periodicity, or exceptionally strong Coulomb binding. Here, we report a charge-state dependency of the magnetic proximity effects between MoSe$_2$ and CrBr$_3$ in photoluminescence, whereby the valley polarization of the MoSe$_2$ trion state conforms closely to the local CrBr$_3$ magnetization, while the neutral exciton state remains insensitive to the f…
Heterobilayers consisting of MoSe$_2$ and WSe$_2$ monolayers can host optically bright interlayer excitons with intriguing properties such as ultralong lifetimes and pronounced circular polarization of their photoluminescence due to valley polarization, which can be induced by circularly polarized excitation or applied magnetic fields. Here, we report on the observation of an intrinsic valley-magnetophonon resonance for localized interlayer excitons promoted by invervalley hole scattering. It leads to a resonant increase of the photoluminescence polarization degree at the same field of 24.2 Te…
Layered two-dimensional materials exhibit rich transport and optical phenomena in twisted or lattice-incommensurate heterostructures with spatial variations of interlayer hybridization arising from moiré interference effects. Here, we report experimental and theoretical studies of excitons in twisted heterobilayers and heterotrilayers of transition metal dichalcogenides. Using MoSe$_2$-WSe$_2$ stacks as representative realizations of twisted van der Waals bilayer and trilayer heterostructures, we observe contrasting optical signatures and interpret them in the theoretical framework of interlay…
Neutral and charged excitons (trions) in atomically-thin materials offer important capabilities for photonics, from ultrafast photodetectors to highly-efficient light-emitting diodes and lasers. Recent studies of van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures comprised of dissimilar monolayer materials have uncovered a wealth of optical phenomena that are predominantly governed by interlayer interactions. Here, we examine the optical properties in NbSe$_2$ - MoSe$_2$ vdW heterostructures, which provide an important model system to study metal-semiconductor interfaces, a common element in optoelectronics…
We perform coherent nonlinear spectroscopy of excitons in single-layers of MoSe$_2$ and WSe$_2$ encapsulated between thin films of hexagonal boron nitride. Employing four-wave mixing microscopy we identify virtually disorder free areas, generating exciton optical response at the homogeneous limit. Focussing on such areas, we measure exciton homogeneous broadening as a function of environmental factors, namely temperature and exciton density. Exploiting FWM imaging, we find that at such locations, nonlinear absorption of the exciton excited states and their coherent couplings can be observed. U…
The recently discovered spin defects in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), a layered van der Waals material, have great potential in quantum sensing. However, the photoluminescence and the contrast of the optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) of hBN spin defects are relatively low so far, which limits their sensitivity. Here we report a record-high ODMR contrast of 46$\%$ at room temperature, and simultaneous enhancement of the photoluminescence of hBN spin defects by up to 17-fold by the surface plasmon of a gold-film microwave waveguide. Our results are obtained with shallow boron vacancy…
Low temperature photoluminescence spectra of a color center in hexagonal boron nitride are analyzed. The acoustic phonon sideband can be described by a deformation coupling proportional to strain to a phonon bath that is effectively two dimensional. The optical phonon band is described by Frohlich coupling to the LO-branches, and a deformation coupling proportional to lattice displacement for the TO-branch. The resonances expressed in the optical band vary from defect to defect, in some emitters, coupling to out-of-plane polarized phonons is reported.
We quantitatively study the Raman and photoluminescence (PL) emission from single layer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) on dielectric (SiO2, hexagonal boron nitride, mica and the polymeric dielectric Gel-Film) and conducting substrates (Au and few-layer graphene). We find that the substrate can affect the Raman and PL emission in a twofold manner. First, the absorption and emission intensities are strongly modulated by the constructive/destructive interference within the different substrates. Second, the position of the A1g Raman mode peak and the spectral weight between neutral and charged excito…
Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) heterostructure with a type II alignment hosts unique interlayer excitons with the possibility of spin-triplet and spin-singlet states. However, the associated spectroscopy signatures remain elusive, strongly hindering the understanding of the Moire potential modulation of the interlayer exciton. In this work, we unambiguously identify the spin-singlet and spin-triplet interlayer excitons in the WSe2/MoSe2 hetero-bilayer with a 60-degree twist angle through the gate- and magnetic field-dependent photoluminescence spectroscopy. Both the singlet and tripl…
Spatially periodic structures with a long range period, referred to as moiré pattern, can be obtained in van der Waals bilayers in the presence of a small stacking angle or of lattice mismatch between the monolayers. Theoretical predictions suggest that the resulting spatially periodic variation of the band structure modifies the optical properties of both intra and interlayer excitons of transition metal dichalcogenides heterostructures. Here, we report on the impact of the moiré pattern formed in a MoSe$_2$/MoS$_2$ heterobilayer encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride. The periodic in-plane …
Screening due to surrounding dielectric medium reshapes the electron-hole interaction potential and plays a pivotal role in deciding the binding energies of strongly bound exciton complexes in quantum confined monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). However, owing to strong quasi-particle bandgap renormalization in such systems, a direct quantification of estimated shifts in binding energy in different dielectric media remains elusive using optical studies. In this work, by changing the dielectric environment, we show a conspicuous photoluminescence (PL) peak shift at low temper…
Based on \emph{ab initio} theoretical calculations of the optical spectra of vertical heterostructures of MoSe$_2$ (or MoS$_2$) and WSe$_2$ sheets, we reveal two spin-orbit-split Rydberg series of excitonic states below the \textsl{A} excitons of MoSe$_2$ and WSe$_2$ with a significant binding energy on the order of 250\,meV for the first excitons in the series. At the same time, we predict crystalographically aligned MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ heterostructures to exhibit an indirect fundamental band gap. Due to the type-II nature of the MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ heterostructure, the indirect transition and the …
We demonstrate the use of Stimulated Emission Depletion (STED) spectroscopy to map the electron-optical-phonon sideband of the ground state of the radiative transition of color centers in hexagonal boron nitride emitting at 2.0-2.2 eV, with in-plane linear polarization. The measurements are compared to Photoluminescence of Excitation (PLE) spectra, that maps the electron-optical-phonon sideband of the excited state. The main qualitative difference is a red-shift in the longitudinal optical phonon peak associated with $E_{1u}$ symmetry at the zone center. We argue that this is consistent with r…
We combine electron energy-loss spectroscopy and first-principles calculations based on density-functional theory (DFT) to identify the lowest indirect exciton state in the in-plane charge response of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) single crystals. This remarkably sharp mode forms a narrow pocket with a dispersion bandwidth of $\sim 100~\text{meV}$ and, as we argue based on a comparison to our DFT calculations, is predominantly polarized along the $Γ\text{K}$-direction of the hexagonal Brillouin zone. Our data support the recent report by Cassabois \emph{et al.} (Nat. Photon. \textbf{10}, 262)…

Squeezing bubbles and impurities out of interlayer spaces by applying force through a few-layer graphene capping layer leads to van der Waals heterostructures with ultra-flat structure free from random electrostatic potential arising from charged impurities. Without the graphene capping layer, a squeezing process with an AFM tip induces applied-force-dependent charges of n ~ 2 x 10^12 cm^-2 uN^-1, resulting in strong intensity of trions in photoluminescence spectra of MoSe2 at low temperature. We found that a hBN/MoSe2/hBN prepared with the "modified nano-squeezing method" shows a strong excit…
We report on multicolor excitation experiments with color centers in hexagonal boron nitride at cryogenic temperatures. We demonstrate controllable optical switching between bright and dark states of color centers emitting around 2eV. Resonant, or quasi-resonant excitation also pumps the color center, via a two-photon process, into a dark state, where it becomes trapped. Photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy reveals a defect dependent energy threshold for repumping the color center into the bright state of between 2.2 and 2.6eV. Photoionization and photocharging of the defect is the most p…
Color centers in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) show stable single photon emission even at room temperature, making these systems a promising candidate for quantum information applications. Besides this remarkable property, also their interaction with longitudinal optical (LO) phonons is quite unique because they lead to dominant phonon sidebands (PSBs), well separated from the zero phonon line (ZPL). In this work we utilize this clear spectral separation to theoretically investigate the influence of phonon decay dynamics on time-dependent photoluminescence (PL) signals. Our simulations show, t…

Degenerate extrema in the energy dispersion of charge carriers in solids, also referred to as valleys, can be regarded as a binary quantum degree of freedom, which can potentially be used to implement valleytronic concepts in van der Waals heterostructures based on transition metal dichalcogenides. Using magneto-photoluminescence spectroscopy, we achieve a deeper insight into the valley polarization and depolarization mechanisms of interlayer excitons formed across a MoS$_2$/MoSe$_2$/MoS$_2$ heterostructure. We account for the non-trivial behavior of the valley polarization as a function of th…
Embedding a WS$_2$ monolayer in flakes of hexagonal boron nitride allowed us to resolve and study the photoluminescence response due to both singlet and triplet states of negatively charged excitons (trions) in this atomically thin semiconductor. The energy separation between the singlet and triplet states has been found to be relatively small reflecting rather weak effects of the electron-electron exchange interaction for the trion triplet in a WS$_2$ monolayer, which involves two electrons with the same spin but from different valleys. Polarization-resolved experiments demonstrate that the h…
Strongly bound excitons confined in two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors are dipoles with a perfect in-plane orientation. In a vertical stack of semiconducting 2D crystals, such in-plane excitonic dipoles are expected to efficiently couple across van der Waals gap due to strong interlayer Coulomb interaction and exchange their energy. However, previous studies on heterobilayers of group 6 transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) found that the exciton decay dynamics is dominated by interlayer charge transfer (CT) processes. Here, we report an experimental observation of fast interlayer energy tr…
Defect centers in hexagonal boron nitride represent room-temperature single-photon sources in a layered van der Waals material. These light emitters appear with a wide range of transition energies ranging over the entire visible spectrum, which renders the identification of the underlying atomic structure challenging. In addition to their eminent properties as quantum light emitters, the coupling to phonons is remarkable. Their photoluminescence exhibits significant side band emission well separated from the zero phonon line (ZPL) and an asymmetric broadening of the ZPL itself. In this combine…
Color centers in wide bandgap semiconductors are attracting broad attention as platforms for quantum technologies relying on room-temperature single-photon emission (SPE), and for nanoscale metrology applications building on the centers' response to electric and magnetic fields. Here, we demonstrate room-temperature SPE from defects in cubic boron nitride (cBN) nanocrystals, which we unambiguously assign to the cubic phase using spectrally resolved Raman imaging. These isolated spots show photoluminescence (PL) spectra with zero-phonon lines (ZPLs) within the visible region (496-700 nm) when s…
Layered materials enable the assembly of a new class of heterostructures where lattice-matching is no longer a requirement. Interfaces in these heterostructures therefore become a fertile ground for unexplored physics as dissimilar phenomena can be coupled via proximity effects. In this article we identify an unexpected photoluminescence (PL) peak when MoSe$_2$ interacts with TiSe$_2$. A series of temperature-dependent and spatially-resolved PL measurements reveal this peak is unique to the TiSe$_2$-MoSe$_2$ interface, higher in energy compared to the neutral exciton, and exhibits exciton-like…
Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are the subject of intense investigation for applications in optics, electronics, catalysis, and energy storage. Their optical and electronic properties can be significantly enhanced when encapsulated in an environment that is free of charge disorder. Because hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is atomically thin, highly-crystalline, and is a strong insulator, it is one of the most commonly used 2D materials to encapsulate and passivate TMDCs. In this report, we examine how ultrathin h-BN shields an underlying MoS2 TMDC layer from the en…
Quantum emitters in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) have recently emerged as promising bright single photon sources. In this letter we investigate in details their optical properties at cryogenic temperatures. In particular, we perform temperature resolved photoluminescence studies and measure photon coherence times from the hBN emitters. The obtained value of 81(1) ps translates to a width of $\sim$12 GHz which is higher than the Fourier transform limited value of $\sim$32 MHz. To account for the photodynamics of the emitter, we perform ultrafast spectral diffusion measurements that partially a…
Layered materials can be assembled vertically to fabricate a new class of van der Waals (VDW) heterostructures a few atomic layers thick, compatible with a wide range of substrates and optoelectronic device geometries, enabling new strategies for control of light-matter coupling. Here, we incorporate molybdenum diselenide/boron nitride (MoSe$_2$/hBN) quantum wells (QWs) in a tunable optical microcavity. Part-light-part-matter polariton eigenstates are observed as a result of the strong coupling between MoSe$_2$ excitons and cavity photons, evidenced from a clear anticrossing between the neutra…
