Given two semistable, non potentially isotrivial elliptic surfaces over a curve $C$ defined over a field of characteristic zero or finitely generated over its prime field, we show that any compatible family of effective isometries of the N{é}ron-Severi lattices of the base changed elliptic surfaces for all finite separable maps $B\to C$ arises from an isomorphism of the elliptic surfaces. Without the effectivity hypothesis, we show that the two elliptic surfaces are isomorphic.
We also determine the group of universal automorphisms of a semistable elliptic surface. In particular, this includes showing that the Picard-Lefschetz transformations corresponding to an irreducible component of a singular fibre, can be extended as universal isometries. In the process, we get a family of homomorphisms of the affine Weyl group associated to $\tilde{A}_{n-1}$ to that of $\tilde{A}_{dn-1}$, indexed by natural numbers $d$, which are closed under composition.
We prove a generic Torelli theorem for Jacobian elliptic surfaces, provided that the geometric genus is large compared to the irregularity. The result is effective to the extent that defining equations for the base curve are recovered from the period data.
The Prym variety for a branched double covering of a nonsingular projective curve is defined as a polarized abelian variety. We prove that any double covering of an elliptic curve which has more than $4$ branch points is recovered from its Prym variety.
Let $C$ be an elliptic curve, $w\in C$, and let $S\subset C$ be a finite subset of cardinality at least $3$. We prove a Torelli type theorem for the moduli space of rank two parabolic vector bundles with determinant line bundle $\mathcal O_C(w)$ over $(C,S)$ which are semistable with respect to a weight vector $\big(\frac{1}{2}, \dots, \frac{1}{2}\big)$.
We study the Hodge structure of elliptic surfaces which are canonically defined from bielliptic curves of genus three. We prove that the period map for the second cohomology has one dimensional fibers, and the period map for the total cohomology is of degree twelve, and moreover, by adding the information of the Hodge structure of the canonical divisor, we prove a generic Torelli theorem for these elliptic surfaces. Finally, we give explicit examples of the pair of non-isomorphic elliptic surfaces which have the same Hodge structure on themselves and the same Hodge structure on their canonical…
We give a short proof of the Torelli theorem for $ALH^*$ gravitational instantons, using the authors' previous construction of mirror special Lagrangian fibrations in del Pezzo surfaces and rational elliptic surfaces together with recent work of Sun-Zhang. In particular, this includes an identification of 10 diffeomorphism types of $ALH^*_b$ gravitational instantons.
We study Shimura subvarieties of $\mathsf{A}_g$ obtained from families of Galois coverings $f: C \rightarrow C'$ where $C'$ is a smooth complex projective curve of genus $g' \geq 1$ and $g= g(C)$. We give the complete list of all such families that satisfy a simple sufficient condition that ensures that the closure of the image of the family via the Torelli map yields a Shimura subvariety of $\mathsf{A}_g$ for $g' =1,2$ and for all $g \geq 2,4$ and for $g' > 2$ and $g \leq 9$. In a previous work of the first and second author together with A. Ghigi [FGP] similar computations were done in the c…
We study the Fourier--Mukai numbers of rational elliptic surfaces. As its application, we give an example of a pair of minimal 3-folds with Kodaira dimensions 1, $h^1(\mc O)=h^2(\mc O)=0$ such that they are mutually derived equivalent, deformation equivalent, but not birationally equivalent. It also supplies a counterexample of the birational Torelli problem.
We prove a global Torelli theorem for pairs (Y,D), where Y is a smooth projective rational surface and D is an effective anti-canonical divisor which is a cycle of rational curves. This Torelli theorem was conjectured by Friedman in 1984. In addition, we construct natural universal families for such pairs.
We study genus 2 covers of relative elliptic curves over an arbitrary base in which 2 is invertible. Particular emphasis lies on the case that the covering degree is 2. We show that the data in the "basic construction" of genus 2 covers of relative elliptic curves determine the cover in a unique way (up to isomorphism). A classical theorem says that a genus 2 cover of an elliptic curve of degree 2 over a field of characteristic different from 2 is birational to a product of two elliptic curves over the projective line. We formulate and prove a generalization of this theorem for the relative si…
The goal of this paper is the study of simple rank 2 parabolic vector bundles over a $2$-punctured elliptic curve $C$. We show that the moduli space of these bundles is a non-separated gluing of two charts isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$. We also showcase a special curve $Γ$ isomorphic to $C$ embedded in this space, and this way we prove a Torelli theorem. This moduli space is related to the moduli space of semistable parabolic bundles over $\mathbb{P}^1$ via a modular map which turns out to be the 2:1 cover ramified in $Γ$. We recover the geometry of del Pezzo surfaces of deg…
We simplify the usual statement of the Torelli theorem for complex Enriques surfaces, by means of a lattice-theoretic trick. This allows easy proofs of several known results, which previously required intricate arithmetic arguments. The main new result is that the moduli space has contractible universal cover.
The universal elliptic KZB equation is the integrable connection on the pro-vector bundle over M_{1,2} whose fiber over the point corresponding to the elliptic curve E and a non-zero point x of E is the unipotent completion of π_1(E-{0},x). This was written down independently by Calaque, Enriquez and Etingof (arXiv:math/0702670), and by Levin and Racinet (arXiv:math/0703237). It generalizes the KZ-equation in genus 0. These notes are in four parts. The first two parts provide a detailed exposition of this connection (following Levin-Racinet); the third is a leisurely exploration of the connect…
Generalizing math.AG/0003076 we express universal triple Massey products between line bundles on elliptic curves in terms of Hecke's indefinite theta series. We show that all Hecke's indefinite theta series arise in this way.
We construct a moduli space for Riemann surfaces that is universal in the sense that it represents compact Riemann surfaces of any finite genus. This moduli space is stratifed according to genus, and it carries a metric and a measure that induce a Riemannian metric and a finite volume measure on each stratum. Applications to the Plateau-Douglas problem for minimal surfaces of varying genus and to the partition function of Bosonic string theory are outlined. The construction starts with a universal moduli space of Abelian varieties. This space carries a structure of an infinite dimensional loca…
The level $N$ elliptic KZB connection is a flat connection over the universal elliptic curve in level $N$ with its $N$-torsion sections removed. Its fiber over the point $(E,x)$ is the unipotent completion of $π_1(E - E[N],x)$. It was constructed by Calaque and Gonzalez. In this paper, we show that the connection underlies an admissible variation of mixed Hodge structure and that it degenerates to the cyclotomic KZ connection over the singular fibers of the compactified universal elliptic curve. These are the first steps in a larger project to compute the action of the Galois group of mixed Ta…
Let T be a general bidegree (2,2) divisor in the product of two projective planes. Recently A.Verra proved that the existence of two conic bundle structures (c.b.s.) on T implies a new counterexample to the Torelli theorem for Prym varieties. Let J(T) be the jacobian of T. In this paper we prove that any of the two c.b.s. on T admits a parametrisation of the theta divisor of J(T) by the Abel-Jacobi image of a special family of elliptic curves of degree 9 (minimal sections of the given c.b.s.) on T. This result is an analogue of the well-known Riemann theorem for curves. In particular, this imp…
For the elliptic curve defined by the most general form $y^2 + (μ_1 x + μ_3) y = x^3 + μ_2 x^2 + μ_4 x + μ_6$, we show the power series expansion of Weierstsass sigma function $σ(u)$ at the origin is of Hurwitz integral over $\mathbb{Z}[μ_1/2, μ_2, μ_3, μ_4, μ_6]$. Namely, the coefficient $c_n$ of any term $c_n u^n/n!$ of the expansion belongs to $\mathbb{Z}[μ_1/2, μ_2, μ_3, μ_4, μ_6]$. The last section contains several first terms of $n$-plication equation of the curve.
We show that the canonical-lift construction for ordinary elliptic curves over perfect fields of characteristic $p>0$ extends uniquely to arbitrary families of ordinary elliptic curves, even over $p$-adic formal schemes. In particular, the universal ordinary elliptic curve has a canonical lift. The existence statement is largely a formal consequence of the universal property of Witt vectors applied to the moduli space of ordinary elliptic curves, at least with enough level structure. As an application, we show how this point of view allows for more formal proofs of recent results of Finotti an…
We show that varieties of dimension at least 2 over infinite fields are determined as abstract schemes by their Zariski topological spaces together with the rational equivalence relation on the set of effective divisors. This gives a universal Torelli theorem in the sense of Bogomolov and Tschinkel. The proof relies heavily on a rational version of the classical Fundamental Theorem of Projective Geometry.
We give an explicit construction of the cusp eigenforms on an elliptic curve defined over a finite field using the theory of Hall algebras and the Langlands correspondence for function fields and $\GL_n$. As a consequence we obtain a description of the Hall algebra of an elliptic curve as an infinite tensor product of simpler algebras. We prove that all these algebras are specializations of a universal spherical Hall algebra (as defined and studied in \cite{BS} and \cite{SV1}).
An algebro-geometric setting for the study of the Painlevé VI equation is introduced. Hamiltonian form of the equation is realized on a twisted relative cotangent bundle to the universal elliptic curve with labelled points of order two. Relations with the theory of elliptic functions and the quantum cohomology of projective plane are discussed.
We study the j-invariant of the canonical lifting of an elliptic curve as a Witt vector. We prove that its Witt coordinates lie in an open affine subset of the j-line and deduce the existence of a universal formula for the j-invariant of the canonical lifting. The canonical lifting of the elliptic curves with j-invariant 0 and 1728 over any characteristic are also explicitly found.
In this paper we construct a Q-linear tannakian category MEM_1 of universal mixed elliptic motives over the moduli space M_{1,1} of elliptic curves. It contains MTM, the category of mixed Tate motives unramified over the integers. Each object of MEM_1 is an object of MTM endowed with an action of SL_2(Z) that is compatible with its structure. Universal mixed elliptic motives can be thought of as motivic local systems over M_{1,1} whose fiber over the tangential base point d/dq at the cusp is a mixed Tate motive. The basic structure of the tannakian fundamental group of MEM is determined and th…
We study Torelli-type theorems in the Zariski topology for varieties of dimension at least 2, over arbitrary fields. In place of the Hodge structure, we use the linear equivalence relation on Weil divisors. Using this setup, we prove a universal Torelli theorem in the sense of Bogomolov and Tschinkel. The proofs rely heavily on new variants of the classical Fundamental Theorem of Projective Geometry of Veblen and Young. For proper normal varieties over uncountable algebraically closed fields of characteristic 0, we show that the Zariski topological space can be used to recover the linear equiv…
This thesis establishes a geometric approach to the de Rham realization of the polylogarithm. As a central result we construct the logarithm sheaves of rational abelian schemes in terms of the birigidified Poincaré bundle with universal integrable connection on the product of the abelian scheme and the universal vectorial extension of its dual. This is achieved essentially by restricting the mentioned data of the Poincaré bundle along the infinitesimal neighborhoods of the zero section of the universal extension. We also clarify how these constructions naturally express within the language of …
Let $K$ be a number field and let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined and of rank one over $K$. For a set $\calW_K$ of primes of $K$, let $O_{K,\calW_K}=\{x\in K: \ord_{\pp}x \geq 0, \forall \pp \not \in \calW_K\}$. Let $P \in E(K)$ be a generator of $E(K)$ modulo the torsion subgroup. Let $(x_n(P),y_n(P))$ be the affine coordinates of $[n]P$ with respect to a fixed Weierstrass equation of $E$. We show that there exists a set $\calW_K$ of primes of $K$ of natural density one such that in $O_{K,\calW_K}$ multiplication of indices (with respect to some fixed multiple of $P$) is existentially defina…
We construct a family of Poisson structures of hydrodynamic type on the loop space of $\mathbb{C} P^{n-1}$. This family is parametrized by the moduli space of elliptic curves or, in other words, by the modular parameter $τ$. This family can be lifted to a homogeneous Poisson structure on the loop space of $\mathbb{C}^n$ but in order to do that we need to upgrade the modular parameter $τ$ to an additional field $τ(x)$ with Poisson brackets $\{τ(x),τ(y)\}=0,~~\{τ(x),z_a(y)\}=2πi~ z_a(y)~δ^{\prime}(x-y)$ where $z_1,...,z_n$ are coordinates on $\mathbb{C}^n$. These homogeneous Poisson structures c…
Suppose V is a surface over a number field k that admits two elliptic fibrations. We show that for each integer d there exists an explicitly computable closed subset Z of V, not equal to V, such that for each field extension K of k of degree at most d over the field of rational numbers, the set V(K) is Zariski dense as soon as it contains any point outside Z. We also present a version of this statement that is universal over certain twists of V and over all extensions of k. This generalizes a result of Swinnerton-Dyer, as well as previous work of Logan, McKinnon, and the author.
We consider algebraic surfaces, recently constructed by Schreieder, that are smooth models of the quotient of the self-product of a complex hyperelliptic curve by a $(\mathbb{Z}/3^c\mathbb{Z})$-action. We show that these surfaces are elliptic modular surfaces in the sense of Shioda, meaning in particular that they are universal families of explicit moduli of elliptic curves.
In this paper, we develop an algebraic de Rham theory for unipotent fundamental groups of once punctured elliptic curves over a field of characteristic zero using the universal elliptic KZB connection of Calaque-Enriquez-Etingof and Levin-Racinet. We use it to give an explicit version of Tannaka duality for unipotent connections over an elliptic curve with a regular singular point at the identity.
Let $G$ be a simple and simply connected complex Lie group. We discuss the moduli space of holomorphic semistable principal $G$ bundles over an elliptic curve $E$. In particular we give a new proof of a theorem of Looijenga and Bernshtein-Shvartsman, that the moduli space is a weighted projective space. The method of proof is to study the deformations of certain unstable bundles coming from special maximal parabolic subgroups of $G$. We also discuss the associated automorphism sheaves and universal bundles, as well as the relation between various universal bundles and spectral covers.
This paper gives various methods for constructing vector bundles over elliptic curves and more generally over families of elliptic curves. We construct universal families over generalized elliptic curves via spectral cover methods and also by extensions, and then give a relative version of the construction in families. We give various examples and make Chern class computations.
We construct a twisted version of the genus one universal Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov-Bernard (KZB) connection introduced by Calaque-Enriquez-Etingof, that we call the ellipsitomic KZB connection. This is a flat connection on a principal bundle over the moduli space of $Γ$-structured elliptic curves with marked points, where $Γ=\mathbb{Z}/M\mathbb{Z}\times\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z}$, and $M,N\geq1$ are two integers. It restricts to a flat connection on $Γ$-twisted configuration spaces of points on elliptic curves, which can be used to construct a filtered-formality isomorphism for some interesting subg…
As a higher genus version of universal mixed elliptic motives by Hain and Matsumoto, we consider mixed Teichmüller motives as certain motivic local systems on the moduli space of pointed curves. We show that the category of mixed Teichmüller motives is equivalent to a full subcategory of a certain product category of mixed Tate motives over Z and universal mixed elliptic motives. Furthermore, we show that unipotent fundamental torsors for the universal open curve give rise to a pro-object in the category of mixed Teichmüller motives. Our results can give a realization of motivic correlators pr…
We give more or less explicit equations for all two-dimensional cusp singularities of embedding dimension at least 4. They are closely related to Felix Klein's equations for universal curves with level n structure. The main technical result is a description of the versal deformation of an n-gon in $P^{n-1}$. The final section contains the equations for smoothings of simple elliptic singularities (of multiplicity at most 9).
We study the sunset graph defined as the scalar two-point self-energy at two-loop order. We evaluate the sunset integral for all identical internal masses in two dimensions. We give two calculations for the sunset amplitude; one based on an interpretation of the amplitude as an inhomogeneous solution of a classical Picard-Fuchs differential equation, and the other using arithmetic algebraic geometry, motivic cohomology, and Eisenstein series. Both methods use the rather special fact that the amplitude in this case is a family of periods associated to the universal family of elliptic curves ove…
We shall give, in an optimal form, a sufficient numerical condition for the finiteness of the fundamental group of the smooth locus of a normal K3 surface. We shall moreover prove that, if the normal K3 surface is elliptic and the above fundamental group is not finite, then there is a finite covering which is a complex torus.
We consider elliptic fibrations with arbitrary base dimensions, and generalise previous work by the second author. In particular, we check universal closedness for the moduli of semistable objects with respect to a polynomial stability that reduces to PT-stability on threefolds. We also show openness of this polynomial stability. On the other hand, we write down criteria under which certain 2-term polynomial semistable complexes are mapped to torsion-free semistable sheaves under a Fourier-Mukai transform. As an application, we construct an open immersion from a moduli of complexes to a moduli…
Geometric variations of local systems are families of variations of Hodge structure; they typically correspond to fibrations of Kähler manifolds for which each fibre itself is fibred by codimension one Kähler manifolds. In this article, we introduce the formalism of geometric variations of local systems and then specialize the theory to study families of elliptic surfaces. We interpret a construction of twisted elliptic surface families used by Besser-Livné in terms of the middle convolution functor, and use explicit methods to calculate the variations of Hodge structure underlying the univers…
We construct a global geometric model for complex analytic equivariant elliptic cohomology for all compact Lie groups. Cocycles are specified by functions on the space of fields of the two-dimensional sigma model with background gauge fields and $\mathcal{N} = (0, 1)$ supersymmetry. We also consider a theory of free fermions valued in a representation whose partition function is a section of a determinant line bundle. We identify this section with a cocycle representative of the (twisted) equivariant elliptic Euler class of the representation. Finally, we show that the moduli stack of $U(1)$-g…
Let $π: \mathcal X \to S$ be a local universal family of compact Ricci-flat Kähler manifolds over a smooth base $S$. The complexified Kähler cones of each fiber of the family form a holomorphic fiber bundle $\mathcal K \to S$. We show that there exists a natural hermitian metric $ω$ on the fiber product $\mathcal X \times_S \mathcal K$. We then discuss the example of elliptic curves in some detail.
