We simplify the usual statement of the Torelli theorem for complex Enriques surfaces, by means of a lattice-theoretic trick. This allows easy proofs of several known results, which previously required intricate arithmetic arguments. The main new result is that the moduli space has contractible universal cover.
We describe a period map for those simply connected Enriques surfaces in characteristic 2 whose canonical double cover is K3. The moduli stack for these surfaces has a Deligne-Mumford quotient that is an open substack of a $\mathbb P^1$-bundle over the period space. We also give some general results relating local and global moduli for algebraic varieties and describe the difference in their dimensions in terms of the failure of the automorphism group scheme to be reduced.
We classify all primitive embeddings of the lattice of numerical equivalence classes of divisors of an Enriques surface with the intersection form multiplied by 2 into an even unimodular hyperbolic lattice of rank 26. These embeddings have a property that facilitates the computation of the automorphism group of an Enriques surface by Borcherds' method.
Reflection walls of certain primitive vectors in the anti-invariant sublattice of the K3 lattice define Heegner divisors in the period space of Enriques surfaces. We show that depending on the norm of these primitive vectors, these Heegner divisors are either irreducible or have two irreducible components. The two components are obtained as the walls orthogonal to primitive vectors of the same norm but of different type as ordinary or characteristic.
We construct a moduli space of adequately marked Enriques surfaces that have a supersingular K3 cover over fields of characteristic $p \geq 3$. We show that this moduli space exists as a scheme locally of finite type over $\mathbb{F}_p$. Moreover, there exists a period map from this moduli space to a period scheme and we obtain a Torelli theorem for supersingular Enriques surfaces.
We classify Enriques involutions on a K3 surface, up to conjugation in the automorphism group, in terms of lattice theory. We enumerate such involutions on singular K3 surfaces with transcendental lattice of discriminant smaller than or equal to 36. For 11 of these K3 surfaces, we apply Borcherds method to compute the automorphism group of the Enriques surfaces covered by them. In particular, we investigate the structure of the two most algebraic Enriques surfaces.
We determine the necessary and sufficient conditions on the entries of the intersection matrix of the transcendental lattice of a K3 surface for the K3 surface to doubly cover an Enriques surface.
We present the classification of involutions on Enriques surfaces. We classify those into 18 types with the help of the lattice theory due to Nikulin. We also give all examples of the classification.
We classify, up to some lattice-theoretic equivalence, all possible configurations of rational double points that can appear on a surface whose minimal resolution is a complex Enriques surface.
It follows from an observation of A. Coble in 1919 that the automorphism group of an unnodal Enriques surface contains the $2$-congruence subgroup of the Weyl group of the $E_{10}$-lattice. In this article, we determine how much bigger the automorphism group of an unnodal Enriques surface can be. Furthermore, we show that the automorphism group is in fact equal to the $2$-congruence subgroup for generic Enriques surfaces in arbitrary characteristic (under the additional assumption that the Enriques surface is ordinary if the characteristic is $2$), improving the corresponding result of W. Bart…
We give a 1-dimensional family of classical and supersingular Enriques surfaces in characteristic 2 covered by the supersingular K3 surface with Artin invariant 1. Moreover we show that there exist 30 nonsingular rational curves and ten non-effective (-2)-divisors on these Enriques surfaces whose reflection group is of finite index in the orthogonal group of the Neron-Severi lattice modulo torsion.
We show that most classes of K3 surfaces have only finitely many Enriques quotients. For supersingular K3 surfaces over fields of characteristic $p \geq 3$, we give a formula which generically yields the number of their Enriques quotients. We reprove via a lattice theoretic argument that supersingular K3 surfaces always have an Enriques quotient over fields of small characteristic. For some small characteristics and some Artin invariants, we explicitly compute lower bounds for the number of Enriques quotients of a supersingular K3 surface. We show that the supersingular K3 surface of Artin inv…
Let $f$ be an automorphism of a complex Enriques surface $Y$ and let $p_f$ denote the characteristic polynomial of the isometry $f^*$ of the numerical Néron-Severi lattice of $Y$ induced by $f$. We apply a modification of McMullen's method to prove that the modulo-$2$ reduction $(p_f(x) \bmod 2)$ is a product of modulo-$2$ reductions of (some of) the five cyclotomic polynomials $Φ_m$, where $m \leq 9$ and $m$ is odd. We study Enriques surfaces that realize modulo-$2$ reductions of $Φ_7$, $Φ_9$ and show that each of the five polynomials $(Φ_m(x) \bmod 2)$ is a factor of the modulo-$2$ reduction…
Bridgeland and Maciocia showed that a complex Enriques surface X has no Fourier-Mukai partners apart from itself: that is, if D^b(X) = D^b(Y) then X = Y. We extend this to twisted Fourier-Mukai partners: if alpha is the non-trivial element of Br(X) = Z/2 and D^b(X,alpha) = D^b(Y,beta), then X = Y and beta is non-trivial. Our main tools are twisted topological K-theory and twisted Mukai lattices.
In this paper, we prove, as the complex case, a supersingular K3 surface over a field of odd characteristic has an Enriques involution if and only if there exists a primitive embedding of the twice of the Enriques lattice into the Neron-Severi group such that the orthogonal complement of the embedding has no vector of self-intersection -2 using the Crystalline Torelli theorem. By this criterion and some lattice calculation, we prove that when the characteristic of the base field is p=19 or p>23, a superingular K3 surface is an Enriques K3 surface if and only if the Artin invariant is less than…
We give conceptual proofs of some results on the automorphism group of an Enriques surface X, for which only computational proofs have been available. Namely, there is an obvious upper bound on the image of Aut(X) in the isometry group of X's numerical lattice, and we establish a lower bound for the image that is quite close to this upper bound. These results apply over any algebraically closed field, provided that X lacks nodal curves, or that all its nodal curves are (numerically) congruent to each other mod 2. In this generality these results were originally proven by Looijenga and Cossec-D…
We define the over-exceptional lattice of a minimal algebraic surface of Kodaira dimension 0. Bounding the rank of this object, we prove that a conjecture by Campana and Corvaja--Zannier holds for Enriques surfaces, as well as K3 surfaces of Picard rank greater than 6 apart from a finite list of geometric Picard lattices. Concretely, we prove that such surfaces over finitely generated fields of characteristic 0 satisfy the weak Hilbert property after a finite field extension of the base field. The degree of the field extension can be uniformly bounded.
This paper develops families of complex Enriques surfaces whose Brauer groups pull back identically to zero on the covering K3 surfaces. Our methods rely on isogenies with Kummer surfaces of product type. We offer both lattice theoretic and geometric constructions. We also sketch how the construction connects to string theory and Picard-Fuchs equations in the context of Enriques Calabi-Yau threefolds.
We define a period map for classical Campedelli surfaces, using a covering trick as in the case of Enriques surfaces: the period map is shown to come from a family of Enriques surfaces, obtained as quotients of the Campedelli surface by an involution. The period map realises an isomorphism between a projective variety obtained by invariant theory, and the Baily-Borel compactification of an arithmetic quotient, in the same fashion as in the work of Matsumoto, Sasaki and Yoshida. The result is proved from scratch using traditional methods. As another consequence we determine properties of the mo…
We introduce a holomorphic torsion invariant of log-Enriques surfaces of index two with cyclic quotient singularities of type $\frac{1}{4}(1,1)$. The moduli space of such log-Enriques surfaces with $k$ singular points is a modular variety of orthogonal type %of dimension $10-k$ associated with a unimodular lattice of signature $(2,10-k)$. We prove that the invariant, viewed as a function on the modular variety, is given by the Petersson norm of an explicit Borcherds product. We note that this torsion invariant is essentially the BCOV invariant in the complex dimension $2$. As a consequence, th…
We call a packing of hyperspheres in $n$ dimensions an Apollonian sphere packing if the spheres intersect tangentially or not at all; they fill the $n$-dimensional space; and every sphere in the packing is a member of a cluster of $n+2$ mutually tangent spheres (and a few more properties described herein). In this paper, we describe an Apollonian packing in eight dimensions that naturally arises from the study of generic nodal Enriques surfaces. The $E_7$, $E_8$ and Reye lattices play roles. We use the packing to generate an Apollonian packing in nine dimensions, and a cross section in seven d…
This is the abstruct of the revised paper. We study the equivariant analytic torsion for K3 surfaces with an anti-symplectic involution with the invariant lattice M (such a surface is called a 2-elementary K3 surface of type M in this paper), and show that it (together with the analytic torsion of the fixed curves) can be identified with the automorphic form on the moduli space characterizing the discriminant locus. Three lattices A_1, II_{1,1}(2), II_{1,9}(2) are of particular interest, because they consist of the building blocks of 2-elementary lattices. An explicit formula is given for them…
Algebraic surfaces of general type with $q=0$, $p_g=2$ and $K^2=1$ were described by Enriques and then studied in more detail by Horikawa. In this paper we consider a $16$-dimensional family of special Horikawa surfaces which are certain bidouble covers of $\mathbb{P}^2$. The construction is motivated by that of special Kunev surfaces which are counterexamples for infinitesimal Torelli and generic global Torelli problem. The main result of the paper is a generic global Torelli theorem for special Horikawa surfaces. To prove the theorem, we relate the periods of special Horikawa surfaces to the…
Let $L$ be an even, hyperbolic lattice with infinitely many simple $(-2)$-roots. We call $L$ a Borcherds lattice if it admits an isotropic vector with bounded inner product with all the simple $(-2)$-roots. We show that this is the case if and only if $L$ has zero entropy, or equivalently if and only if all symmetries of $L$ preserve some isotropic vector. We obtain a complete classification of Borcherds lattices, consisting of $194$ lattices. In turn this provides a classification of hyperbolic lattices of rank $\ge 5$ with virtually solvable symmetry group. Finally, we apply these general re…

In the end of the 19th century Bricard discovered a phenomenon of flexible polyhedra, that is, polyhedra with rigid faces and hinges at edges that admit non-trivial flexes. One of the most important results in this field is a theorem of Sabitov asserting that the volume of a flexible polyhedron is constant during the flexion. In this paper we study flexible polyhedral surfaces in the 3-space two-periodic with respect to translations by two non-colinear vectors that can vary continuously during the flexion. The main result is that the period lattice of a flexible two-periodic surface homeomorph…
