We study Torelli-type theorems in the Zariski topology for varieties of dimension at least 2, over arbitrary fields. In place of the Hodge structure, we use the linear equivalence relation on Weil divisors. Using this setup, we prove a universal Torelli theorem in the sense of Bogomolov and Tschinkel. The proofs rely heavily on new variants of the classical Fundamental Theorem of Projective Geometry of Veblen and Young.
For proper normal varieties over uncountable algebraically closed fields of characteristic 0, we show that the Zariski topological space can be used to recover the linear equivalence relation on divisors. As a consequence, we show that the underlying scheme of any such variety is uniquely determined by its Zariski topological space. We use this to prove a topological version of Gabriel's theorem, stating that a proper normal variety over an uncountable algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 is determined by its category of constructible abelian étale sheaves.
We also discuss a conjecture in arbitrary characteristic, relating the Zariski topological space to the perfection of a proper normal variety.
We determine generators for the codimension 1 Chow group of the moduli spaces of genus zero stable maps to flag varieties G/P. In the case of SL flags, we find all relations between our generators, showing that they essentially come from $\bar M_{0,n}$. In addition, we analyze the codimension 2 classes on the moduli spaces of stable maps to Grassmannians and prove a new codimension 2 relation. This will lead to a partial reconstruction theorem for the Grassmannian of 2 planes.
We show that varieties of dimension at least 2 over infinite fields are determined as abstract schemes by their Zariski topological spaces together with the rational equivalence relation on the set of effective divisors. This gives a universal Torelli theorem in the sense of Bogomolov and Tschinkel. The proof relies heavily on a rational version of the classical Fundamental Theorem of Projective Geometry.
The survey gives an overview of the achievements in topology of real algebraic varieties in the direction initiated in the early 70th by V.I.Arnold and V.A.Rokhlin. We make an attempt to systematize the principal results in the subject. After an exposition of general tools and results, special attention is paid to surfaces and curves on surfaces.
The moduli spaces of flat $\mathrm{SL}_2$- and $\mathrm{PGL}_2$-connections are known to be singular SYZ-mirror partners. We establish the equality of Hodge numbers of their intersection (stringy) cohomology. In rank two, this answers a question raised by Tamás Hausel in Remark 3.30 of "Global topology of the Hitchin system".
We present an algorithm for the symbolic and numerical computation of the degrees of the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes of a closed subvariety of projective space P^n. As the degree of the top Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class is the topological Euler characteristic, this also yields a method to compute the topological Euler characteristic of projective varieties. The method is based on Aluffi's symbolic algorithm to compute degrees of Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes, a symbolic method to compute degrees of Segre classes, and the regenerative cascade by Hauenstein, Sommese and Wampler. The …
Linear projections from P^k to P^h appear in computer vision as models of images of dynamic or segmented scenes. Given multiple projections of the same scene, the identification of many enough correspondences between the images allows, in principle, to reconstruct the position of the projected objects. A critical locus for the reconstruction problem is a variety in P^k containing the set of points for which the reconstruction fails. Critical loci turn out to be determinantal varieties. In this paper we determine and classify all the smooth critical loci, showing that they are classical project…
In this paper we compute Lawson homology groups and semi-topological K-theory for some threefolds and fourfolds. We consider smooth complex projective varieties whose zero cycles are supported on a proper subvariety. Rationally connected varieties are examples of such varieties. The computation makes use of a technique of Bloch and Srinavas, of the Bloch-Kato conjecture and of the spectral sequence relating morphic cohomology and semi-topological K-theory.
We study families of algebraic varieties parametrized by topological spaces and generalize some classical results such as Hilbert Nullstellensatz and primary decomposition of commutative rings. We show that there is an equivalence between the category of bivariant coherent sheaves and the category of sheaves of finitely generated modules.
In the first part of this paper, we show that the assertion "T_pH_k(X,Q)=G_pH_k(X,Q)" (which is called the Friedlander-Mazur conjecture) is a birationally invariant statement for smooth projective varieties X when p=dim(X)-2 and when p=1. We also establish the Friedlander-Mazur conjecture in certain dimensions. More precisely, for a smooth projective variety X, we show that the topological filtration T_pH_{2p+1}(X,Q) coincides with the geometric filtration G_pH_{2p+1}(X,Q) for all p. (Friedlander and Mazur had previously shown that T_pH_{2p}(X,Q})=G_pH_{2p}(X,Q)). As a corollary, we conclude t…
I will discuss recent progress by many people in the program of extending natural topological invariants from manifolds to singular spaces. Intersection homology theory and mixed Hodge theory are model examples of such invariants. The past 20 years have seen a series of new invariants, partly inspired by string theory, such as motivic integration and the elliptic genus of a singular variety. These theories are not defined in a topological way, but there are intriguing hints of their topological significance.
For an arbitrary complex algebraic variety which is not necessarily pure dimensional, the intersection complex can be defined as the direct sum of the Deligne-Goresky-MacPherson intersection complexes of each irreducible component. We give two axiomatic topological characterizations of the middle perversity direct sum intersection complex, one stratification dependent and the other stratification independent. To accomplish this, we show that this direct sum intersection complex can be constructed using Deligne's construction in the more general context of topologically stratified spaces. A con…
We show that the weight 0 part of the first cohomology of a complex algebraic variety $X$ is a topological invariant, and give an explicit description of its dimension using a topological construction of the normalization of $X$, where $X$ can be reducible, but must be equidimensional. The first assertion is known in the $X$ compact case by A. Weber, where intersection cohomology is used. Note that the weight 1 or 2 part of the first cohomology is not a topological (or even analytic) invariant in the non-compact case by Serre's example.
A general theory for constructing linear secret sharing schemes over a finite field $\Fq$ from toric varieties is introduced. The number of players can be as large as $(q-1)^r-1$ for $r\geq 1$. We present general methods for obtaining the reconstruction and privacy thresholds as well as conditions for multiplication on the associated secret sharing schemes. In particular we apply the method on certain toric surfaces. The main results are ideal linear secret sharing schemes where the number of players can be as large as $(q-1)^2-1$. We determine bounds for the reconstruction and privacy thresho…
We study algebraic varieties parametrized by topological spaces and enlarge the domains of Lawson homology and morphic cohomology to this category. We prove a Lawson suspension theorem and splitting theorem. A version of Friedlander-Lawson moving is obtained to prove a duality theorem between Lawson homology and morphic for smooth semi-topological projective varieties. K-groups for semi-topological projective varieties and Chern classes are also constructed.
We formulate and prove a generalization of Zariski-van Kampen theorem on the topological fundamental groups of smooth complex algebraic varieties. As an application, we prove a hyperplane section theorem of Lefschetz-Zariski-van Kampen type for the fundamental groups of the complements to the Grassmannian dual varieties.
We consider derived invariants of varieties in positive characteristic arising from topological Hochschild homology. Using theory developed by Ekedahl and Illusie-Raynaud in their study of the slope spectral sequence, we examine the behavior under derived equivalences of various $p$-adic quantities related to Hodge-Witt and crystalline cohomology groups, including slope numbers, domino numbers, and Hodge-Witt numbers. As a consequence, we obtain restrictions on the Hodge numbers of derived equivalent varieties, partially extending results of Popa-Schell to positive characteristic.
We compute the integral homology (including torsion), the topological K-theory, and the Hodge structure on cohomology of Calabi-Yau threefold hypersurfaces and complete intersections in Gorenstein toric Fano varieties. The methods are purely topological.
In this note we give an algebraic and topological interpretation of essential coordinate components of characteristic varieties and illustrate their importance with an example.
The presented paper is a continuation of the series of papers arXiv:1810.00606 and arXiv:1903.09373. In this paper, utilizing Batyrev and Borisov's duality construction on nef-partitions, we generalize the recipe in arXiv:1810.00606 and arXiv:1903.09373 to construct a pair of singular double cover Calabi--Yau varieties $(Y,Y^{\vee})$ over toric manifolds and compute their topological Euler characteristics and Hodge numbers. In the $3$-dimensional cases, we show that $(Y,Y^{\vee})$ forms a topological mirror pair, i.e., $h^{p,q}(Y)=h^{3-p,q}(Y^{\vee})$ for all $p,q$.
We prove that function fields of varieties of dimension at least two over an algebraic closure of a finite field are determined, modulo purely inseparable extensions, by the quotient by the second term in the lower central series of their pro-$\ell$ Galois groups.
The signature of closed oriented manifolds is well-known to be multiplicative under finite covers. This fails for Poincaré complexes as examples of C. T. C. Wall show. We establish the multiplicativity of the signature, and more generally, the topological L-class, for closed oriented stratified pseudomanifolds that can be equipped with a middle-perverse Verdier self-dual complex of sheaves, determined by Lagrangian sheaves along strata of odd codimension (so-called L-pseudomanifolds). This class of spaces contains all Witt spaces and thus all pure-dimensional complex algebraic varieties. We ap…
Stratified-algebraic vector bundles on real algebraic varieties have many desirable features of algebraic vector bundles but are more flexible. We give a characterization of the compact real algebraic varieties having the following property: There exists a positive integer r such that for any topological vector bundle E on X, the direct sum of r copies of E is isomorphic to a stratified-algebraic vector bundle. In particular, each compact real algebraic variety of dimension at most 8 has this property. Our results are expressed in terms of K-theory.
This PhD Thesis is devoted to the study of Hodge structures on a special type of complex algebraic varieties, the so-called character varieties. For this purpose, we propose to use a powerful algebro-geometric tool coming from theoretical physics, known as Topological Quantum Field Theory (TQFT). With this idea in mind, in the present Thesis we develop a formalism that allows us to construct TQFTs from two simpler pieces of data: a field theory (geometric data) and a quantisation (algebraic data). As an application, we construct a TQFT computing Hodge structures on representation varieties and…
In this paper, we use a geometric technique developed by González-Prieto, Logares, Muñoz, and Newstead to study the $G$-representation variety of surface groups $\mathfrak{X}_G(Σ_g)$ of arbitrary genus for $G$ being the group of upper triangular matrices of fixed rank. Explicitly, we compute the virtual classes in the Grothendieck ring of varieties of the $G$-representation variety and the moduli space of $G$-representations of surface groups for $G$ being the group of complex upper triangular matrices of rank $2$, $3$, and $4$ via constructing a topological quantum field theory. Furthermore, …
We revisit some of the basic results of generic vanishing theory, as pioneered by Green and Lazarsfeld, in the context of constructible sheaves. Using the language of perverse sheaves, we give new proofs of some of the basic results of this theory. Our approach is topological/arithmetic, and avoids Hodge theory.
We give a topological explanation of the main results of V.Shchigolev, Categories of Bott-Samelson Varieties, Algebras and Representation Theory, 23 (2), 349-391, 2020. To this end, we consider some subspaces of Bott-Samelson varieties invariant under the action of the maximal compact torus $K$ and study their topological and homological properties. Moreover, we describe multiplicative generators of the equivariant cohomologies of Bott-Samelson varieties.
We construct a lax monoidal Topological Quantum Field Theory that computes Deligne-Hodge polynomials of representation varieties of the fundamental group of any closed manifold into any complex algebraic group $G$. As byproduct, we obtain formulas for these polynomials in terms of homomorphisms between the space of mixed Hodge modules on $G$. The construction is developed in a categorical-theoretic framework allowing its application to other situations.
Let $V$ be a possibly singular scheme-theoretic complete intersection subscheme of $\mathbb{P}^n$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. Using a recent result of Fullwood ("On Milnor classes via invariants of singular subschemes", Journal of Singularities) we develop an algorithm to compute the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class and Euler characteristic of $V$. This algorithm complements existing algorithms by providing performance improvements in the computation of the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class and Euler characteristic for certain types of complete intersection subschem…
In this paper, we use lax monoidal TQFTs as an effective computational method for motivic classes of representation varieties. In particular, we perform the calculation for parabolic $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{C})$-representation varieties over a closed orientable surface of arbitrary genus and any number of marked points with holonomies of Jordan type. This technique is based on a building method of lax monoidal TQFTs of physical inspiration that generalizes the construction of González-Prieto, Logares and Muñoz.
We give a version in characteristic $p>0$ of Mumford's theorem characterizing a smooth complex germ of surface $(X,x)$ by the triviality of the topological fundamental group of $U=X\setminus \{x\}$. This note relies on discussions the authors had during the Christmas break 2009/10 in Ivry. They have been written down by Hélène in the night when Eckart died, as a despaired sign of love.
We construct a multiplicative spectral sequence converging to the symplectic cohomology ring of any affine variety $X$, with first page built out of topological invariants associated to strata of any fixed normal crossings compactification $(M,\mathbf{D})$ of $X$. We exhibit a broad class of pairs $(M,\mathbf{D})$ (characterized by the absence of relative holomorphic spheres or vanishing of certain relative GW invariants) for which the spectral sequence degenerates, and a broad subclass of pairs (similarly characterized) for which the ring structure on symplectic cohomology can also be describ…
We prove that varieties are uniquely determined by the derived category of $\mathscr{O}[[\hbar]]$-modules with coherent cohomology which is the same as $\mathscr{O}$-modules proved by A. Bondal and D. Orlov. We also generalize a theorem of Orlov.
Extending work of Meinhardt and Partsch, we prove that two varieties are isomorphic in codimension c if and only if certain quotients of their categories of coherent sheaves are equivalent. This result interpolates between Gabriel's reconstruction theorem and the fact that two varieties are birational if and only if they have the same function field.
Motivated by some recent works on BPS invariants of open strings/knot invariants, we guess there may be a general correspondence between the Ooguri-Vafa invariants of toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds and cohomologies of Nakajima quiver varieties. In this short note, we provide a toy model to explain this correspondence. More precisely, we study the topological open string model of $\mathbb{C}^3$ with one Aganagic-Vafa brane $\mathcal{D}_τ$, and we show that, when $τ\leq 0$, its Ooguri-Vafa invariants are given by the Betti numbers of certain quiver variety. Moreover, the existence of Ooguri-Vafa invar…
We outline two approaches to the construction of integrable hierarchies associated with the theory of Gromov - Witten invariants of smooth projective varieties. We argue that a comparison of these two approaches yields nontrivial constraints on Chern numbers of varieties with semisimple quantum cohomology.
Serre and Abelson have produced examples of non-homeomorphic conjugate varieties. We show that if the field of definition of a polarized projective variety coincides with its field of moduli then all of its conjugates have the same topological type. This extends the class of varieties known to posses conjugacy invariant to canonically embedded varieties. We also show that normal complete interswections in homogeneous varieties have this property.
We define and study the functorial spectrum for every triangulated tensor category. A reconstruction result for topologically noetherian schemes similar to (and based on) a theorem by Balmer is proved. An alternative proof of the reconstruction theorem by Bondal-Orlov for smooth projective varieties with ample (anti-)canonical bundles is given.
We prove a conjecture of Khovanov which identifies the topological space underlying the Springer variety of complete flags in C^2n stabilized by a fixed nilpotent operator with two Jordan blocks of size n.

We study O'Grady examples of irreducible symplectic varieties: we establish that both of them can be deformed into lagrangian fibrations. We analyse in detail the topology of the six dimensional example: in particular we compute its Euler characteristic and determine its Beauville form.
We show that conjugation by an automorphism of the complex numbers (as an abstract field) may change the topological fundamental group of a locally symmetric variety over C. As a consequence, we obtain a large class of algebraic varieties defined over number fields with the property that different embeddings of the number field into C give complex varieties with nonisomorphic fundamental groups.
We describe the E-infinity algebra structure on the complex of singular cochains of a topological space, in the context of sheaf theory. As a first application, for any algebraic variety we define a weight filtration compatible with its E-infinity structure. This naturally extends the theory of mixed Hodge structures in rational homotopy to p-adic homotopy theory. The spectral sequence associated to the weight filtration gives a new family of multiplicative algebraic invariants of the varieties for any coefficient ring, carrying Steenrod operations. As a second application, we promote Deligne'…
We study the topological group structure (coming from loop multiplication) on an affine Grassmannian. In particular, we study finite-dimensional subvarieties that generate the homology ring. We show that there is a canonical family of generating Schubert varieties, namely those defined by the negative of the coroot associated to the highest root. These not only generate the homology, but generate the affine Grassmannian itself in a precise sense.
Let $V$ be a closed subscheme of a projective space $\mathbb{P}^n$. We give an algorithm to compute the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class, Euler characteristic and Segre class of $ V$. The algorithm can be implemented using either symbolic or numerical methods. The algorithm is based on a new method for calculating the projective degrees of a rational map defined by a homogeneous ideal. Using this result and known formulas for the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class of a projective hypersurface and the Segre class of a projective variety in terms of the projective degrees of certain rational maps we…
One of the main themes of this long article is the study of projective varieties which are K(H,1)'s, i.e. classifying spaces BH for some discrete group H. After recalling the basic properties of such classifying spaces, an important class of such varieties is introduced, the one of Bagnera-de Franchis varieties, the quotients of an Abelian variety by the free action of a cyclic group. Moduli spaces of Abelian varieties and of algebraic curves enter into the picture as examples of rational K(H,1)'s, through Teichmueller theory. The main thrust of the paper is to show how in the case of K(H,1)'s…
We use topological K-theory to study non-singular varieties with quadratic entry locus. We thus obtain a new proof of Russo's Divisibility Property for locally quadratic entry locus manifolds. In particular we obtain a K-theoretic proof of Zak's theorem that the dimension of a Severi variety must be 2, 4, 8 or 16 and so resolve a conjecture of Atiyah and Berndt. We also show how the same methods applied to dual varieties recover the Landman parity theorem.
By comparing the Postnikov towers of the classifying spaces of projective unitary groups and the differentials in a twisted Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence, we deduce a lower bound on the topological index in terms of the period, and solve the topological version of the period-index problem in full for finite CW complexes of dimension at most 6. Conditions are established that, if they were met in the cohomology of a smooth complex 3-fold variety, would disprove the ordinary period-index conjecture. Examples of higher-dimensional varieties meeting these conditions are provided. We use our …
We give conditions for the Mayer-Vietoris property to hold for the algebraic K-theory of blow-up squares of toric varieties in any characteristic, using the theory of monoid schemes. These conditions are used to relate algebraic K-theory to topological cyclic homology in characteristic p. To achieve our goals, we develop for monoid schemes many notions from classical algebraic geometry, such as separated and proper maps.
Motivic Chern and Hirzebruch classes are polynomials with K-theory and homology classes as coefficients, which specialize to Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes, K-theory classes, and Cappell-Shaneson L-classes. We provide formulas to compute the motivic Chern and Hirzebruch classes of Grassmannian and vexillary degeneracy loci. We apply our results to obtain the Hirzebruch $χ_y$-genus of classical and one-pointed Brill-Noether varieties, and therefore their topological Euler characteristic, holomorphic Euler characteristic, and signature.
