A method for constructing the Lax pairs for nonlinear integrable models is suggested. First we look for a nonlinear invariant manifold to the linearization of the given equation. Examples show that such invariant manifold does exist and can effectively be found. Actually it is defined by a quadratic form. As a result we get a nonlinear Lax pair consisting of the linearized equation and the invariant manifold. Our second step consists of finding an appropriate change of the variables to linearize the found nonlinear Lax pair. The desired change of the variables is again defined by a quadratic form. The method is illustrated by the well-known KdV equation and the modified Volterra chain. New Lax pairs are found. The formal asymptotic expansions for their eigenfunctions are constructed around the singular values of the spectral parameter. By applying the method of the formal diagonalization to these Lax pairs the infinite series of the local conservation laws are obtained for the corresponding nonlinear models.
We introduce a family of order $N\in \mathbb{N}$ Lax matrices that is indexed by the natural number $k\in \{1,\ldots,N-1\}.$ For each value of $k$ they serve as strong Lax matrices of a hierarchy of integrable difference systems in edge variables that in turn lead to hierarchies of integrable difference systems in vertex variables or in a combination of edge and vertex variables. Furthermore, the entries of the Lax matrices are considered as elements of a division ring, so we obtain hierarchies of discrete integrable systems extended in the non-commutative domain.
We present examples of Lax-integrable multi-dimensional systems of partial differential equations with higher local symmetries. We also consider Lagrangian deformations of these equations and construct variational bivectors on them.
This paper develops the technique of constructing Lax representations for PDEs via non-central extensions generated by non-triivial exotic 2-cocycles of their contact symmetry algebras. We show that the method is applicable to the Lax representations with non-removable spectral parameters. Also we demonstrate that natural extensions of the symmetry algebras produce the integrable hierarchies associated to their PDEs.
Using the Lax representation with non-removable parameter, we construct two hierarchies of nonlocal conservation laws for the 3D rdDym equation $u_{ty} = u_xu_{xy} - u_yu_{xx}$ and describe the algebras of nonlocal symmetries in the corresponding coverings.
We review the recent approach to the construction of (3+1)-dimensional integrable dispersionless partial differential systems based on their contact Lax pairs and the related $R$-matrix theory for the Lie algebra of functions with respect to the contact bracket. We discuss various kinds of Lax representations for such systems, in particular, linear nonisospectral contact Lax pairs and nonlinear contact Lax pairs as well as the relations among the two. Finally, we present a large number of examples with finite and infinite number of dependent variables, as well as the reductions of these exampl…
We present a complete description of $2$-dimensional equations that arise as symmetry reductions of fourf $3$-dimensional Lax-integrable equations: (1) the universal hierarchy equation~$u_{yy}=u_zu_{xy}-u_yu_{xz}$; (2) the 3D rdDym equation $u_{ty}=u_xu_{xy}-u_yu_{xx}$; (3) The basic Veronese web equation $u_{ty}=u_tu_{xy}-u_yu_{tx}$; (4) Pavlov's equation $u_{yy}=u_{tx}+u_yu_{xx}-u_xu_{xy}$.
A consistent set of six integrable discrete and continuous dynamical systems are suggested corresponding to arbitrary affine Lie algebra. The set contains a system of partial differential equations which can be treated as a version of generalized Toda lattice while semi-discrete systems in the set define the Backlund transform for this Toda lattice and the fully discrete representative of the set can be obtained as a superposition of such kind Backlund transforms. Four linear Zakharov-Shabat type systems taken pairwise realize Lax pairs for these six dynamical systems.
We use example of the Davey-Stewartson hierarchy to show that in addition to the standard equations given by Lax operator and evolutions of times with positive numbers, one can consider time evolutions with negative numbers and the same Lax operator. We derive corresponding Lax pairs and integrable equations.
Fordy and Xenitidis [J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 50 (2017) 165205] recently proposed a large class of discrete integrable systems which include a number of novel integrable difference equations, from the perspective of $\mathbb{Z}_\mathcal{N}$ graded Lax pairs, without providing solutions. In this paper, we establish the link between the Fordy-Xenitidis discrete systems in coprime case and linear integral equations in certain form, which reveals solution structure of these equations. The bilinear form of the Fordy-Xenitidis integrable difference equations is also presented together with the assoc…
We discuss algebraic and analytic structure of rational Lax operators. With algebraic reductions of Lax equations we associate a reduction group - a group of twisted automorphisms of the corresponding infinite dimensional Lie algebra. We present a complete study of dihedral reductions for sl(2,C) Lax operators with simple poles and corresponding integrable equations. In the last section we give three examples of dihedral reductions for sl(N,C) Lax operators.
The universal character is a generalization of the Schur function attached to a pair of partitions. We study an integrable system of q-difference equations satisfied by the universal characters, which is an extension of the q-KP hierarchy and is called the lattice q-UC hierarchy. We describe the lattice q-UC hierarchy as a compatibility condition of its associated linear system (Lax formalism) and explore an application to the q-Painleve equations via similarity reduction. In particular a higher-order analogue of the q-Painleve VI equation is presented.
An integrable semi-discretization of complex and multi-component coupled dispersionless systems via Lax pairs is presented. A Lax pair is proposed for the complex sdCD system. We derive the Lax pair for the multi-component sdCD system through generalizing the $2 \times 2$ Lax matrices to the case of $2^{N} \times 2^{N}$ Lax matrices. A Darboux transformation (DT) is applied to the complex and multi-component sdCD systems and is used to compute soliton solutions of the systems. It is also shown that the soliton solutions of the semi-discrete systems reduce to the continuous systems by applying …
We suggest a direct algorithm for searching the Lax pairs for nonlinear integrable equations. It is effective for both continuous and discrete models. The first operator of the Lax pair corresponding to a given nonlinear equation is found immediately, coinciding with the linearization of the considered nonlinear equation. The second one is obtained as an invariant manifold to the linearized equation. A surprisingly simple relation between the second operator of the Lax pair and the recursion operator is discussed: the recursion operator can immediately be found from the Lax pair. Examples cons…
After extending the Clarkson-Kruskal's direct similarity reduction ansatz to a more general form, one may obtain various new types of reduction equations. Especially, some lower dimensional turbulence systems or chaotic systems may be obtained from the general type of similarity reductions of a higher dimensional Lax integrable model. Especially, the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation and an arbitrary three order quasilinear equation which includes the Korteweg de-Vries Burgers equation and the general Lorenz equation as two special cases are obtained from the reductions of the (2+1)-dimensional di…
It is well known that from two-dimensional lattice equations one can derive one-dimensional lattice equations by imposing periodicity in some direction. In this paper we generalize the periodicity condition by adding a symmetry transformation and apply this idea to autonomous and non-autonomous lattice equations. As results of this approach, we obtain new reductions of the discrete potential Korteweg-de Vries equation, discrete modified Korteweg-de Vries equation and the discrete Schwarzian Korteweg-de Vries equation. We will also describe a direct method for obtaining Lax representations for …
In paper by I.T. Habibullin and our joint paper the algorithm for classification of integrable equations with three independent variables was proposed. This method is based on the requirement of the existence of an infinite set of Darboux integrable reductions and on the notion of the characteristic Lie-Rinehart algebras. The method was applied for the classification of integrable cases of different subclasses of equations $u_{n,xy} = f(u_{n+1},u_n,u_{n-1}, u_{n,x},u_{n,y})$ of special forms. Under this approach the novel integrable chain was obtained. In present paper we construct Lax pair fo…
We discuss the concept of Lax-Darboux scheme and illustrate it on well known examples associated with the Nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation. We explore the Darboux links of the NLS hierarchy with the hierarchy of Heisenberg model, principal chiral field model as well as with differential-difference integrable systems (including the Toda lattice and differential-difference Heisenberg chain) and integrable partial difference systems. We show that there exists a transformation which formally diagonalises all elements of the Lax-Darboux scheme simultaneously. It provides us with generating func…
We suggested an algorithm for searching the recursion operators for nonlinear integrable equations. It was observed that the recursion operator $R$ can be represented as a ratio of the form $R=L_1^{-1}L_2$ where the linear differential operators $L_1$ and $L_2$ are chosen in such a way that the ordinary differential equation $(L_2-λL_1)U=0$ is consistent with the linearization of the given nonlinear integrable equation for any value of the parameter $λ\in \textbf{C}$. For constructing the operator $L_1$ we use the concept of the invariant manifold which is a generalization of the symmetry. The…
A $2n$-dimensional Lax integrable system is proposed by a set of specific spectral problems. It contains Takasaki equations, the self-dual Yang-Mills equations and its integrable hierarchy as examples. An explicit formulation of Darboux transformations is established for this Lax integrable system. The Vandermonde and generalized Cauchy determinant formulas lead to a description for deriving explicit solutions and thus some rational and analytic solutions are obtained.
We present a first example of an integrable (3+1)-dimensional dispersionless system with nonisospectral Lax pair involving algebraic, rather than rational, dependence on the spectral parameter, thus showing that the class of integrable (3+1)-dimensional dispersionless systems with nonisospectral Lax pairs is significantly more diverse than it appeared before. The Lax pair in question is of the type recently introduced in [A. Sergyeyev, Lett. Math. Phys. 108 (2018), no. 2, 359-376, arXiv:1401.2122 ].
We extend the reduction group method to the Lax-Darboux schemes associated with nonlinear Schrödinger type equations. We consider all possible finite reduction groups and construct corresponding Lax operators, Darboux transformations, hierarchies of integrable differential-difference equations, integrable partial difference systems and associated scalar partial difference equations.
We derive a Riemann--Hilbert representation for the solution of an integrable nonlinear evolution equation with a $3 \times 3$ Lax pair. We use the derived representation to obtain formulas for the long-time asymptotics.
This paper studies the structure of Lax pairs associated with integrable lattice systems (where space is a one-dimensional lattice, and time is continuous). It describes a procedure for generating examples of such systems, and emphasizes the features that are needed to obtain equations which are local on the spatial lattice.
A fairly complete list of Toda-like integrable lattice systems, both in the continuous and discrete time, is given. For each system the Newtonian, Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations are presented, as well as the 2x2 Lax representation and r-matrix structure. The material is given in the "no comment" style, in particular, all proofs are omitted.
This paper is devoted to the classification of integrable Davey-Stewartson type equations. A list of potentially deformable dispersionless systems is obtained through the requirement that such systems must be generated by a polynomial dispersionless Lax pair. A perturbative approach based on the method of hydrodynamic reductions is employed to recover the integrable systems along with their Lax pairs. Some of the found systems seem to be new.
We present an approach for analyzing initial-boundary value problems for integrable equations whose Lax pairs involve $3 \times 3$ matrices. Whereas initial value problems for integrable equations can be analyzed by means of the classical Inverse Scattering Transform (IST), the presence of a boundary presents new challenges. Over the last fifteen years, an extension of the IST formalism developed by Fokas and his collaborators has been successful in analyzing boundary value problems for several of the most important integrable equations with $2 \times 2$ Lax pairs, such as the Korteweg-de Vrie…
In this paper we derive new two-component integrable differential difference and partial difference systems by applying a Lax-Darboux scheme to an operator formed from an ${\mathfrak{sl}}_3({\mathbb{C}})$-based automorphic Lie algebra. The integrability of the found systems is demonstrated via Lax pairs and generalised symmetries.
Appropriate restrictions of Lax operators which allows to construction of (2+1)-dimensional integrable field systems, coming from centrally extended algebra of pseudo-differential operators, are reviewed. The gauge transformation and the reciprocal link between three classes of Lax hierarchies are established.
We preesent a new supersymmetric integrable extensions of the a=4,N=2 KdV hierarchy. The root of the supersymmetric Lax operator of the KdV equation is generalized, by including additional fields. This generalized root generate new hierarchy of integrable equations, for which we investigate the hamiltonian structure. In special case our system describes the interaction of the KdV equation with the two MKdV equations.
We formulate and study an integrable model of Nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS)-type through its Lax representation, where one of the Lax operators is quadratic and the other has a rational dependence on the spectral parameter. We discuss the associated spectral problem, the Riemann-Hilbert problem formulation, the conserved quantities, as well as a generalisation for symmetric spaces. In addition we explore the possibilities for modelling with higher order NLS (HNLS) integrable equations and in particular, the relevance of the proposed system.
We continue here the study of Lax integrable equations. We consider four three-dimensional equations: (1) the rdDym equation $u_{ty} = u_x u_{xy} - u_y u_{xx}$, (2) the 3D Pavlov equation $u_{yy} = u_{tx} + u_y u_{xx} - u_x u_{xy}$; (3) the universal hierarchy equation $u_{yy} = u_t u_{xy} - u_y u_{tx}$, and (4) the modified Veronese web equation $u_{ty} = u_t u_{xy} - u_y u_{tx}$. For each equation, using the know Lax pairs and expanding the latter in formal series in spectral parameter, we construct two infinite-dimensional differential coverings and give a full description of nonlocal symme…
The search for new integrable (3+1)-dimensional partial differential systems is among the most important challenges in the modern integrability theory. It turns out that such a system can be associated to any pair of rational functions of one variable in general position, as established below using contact Lax pairs introduced in arXiv:1401.2122.
This paper develops two approaches to Lax-integrbale systems with spatiotemporally varying coefficients. A technique based on extended Lax Pairs is first considered to derive variable-coefficient generalizations of various Lax-integrable NLPDE hierarchies recently introduced in the literature. As illustrative examples, we consider generalizations of the NLS and DNLS equations, as well as a PT-symmetric version of the NLS equation. It is demonstrated that the techniques yield Lax- or S-integrable NLPDEs with both time- AND space-dependent coefficients which are thus more general than almost all…
We consider several integrable systems from a standpoint of the SL(2,R) invariant gauge theory. In the Drinfeld-Sokorov gauge, we get a one parameter family of nonlinear equations from zero curvature conditions. For each value of the parameter the equation is described by weak Lax equations. It is transformed to a set of coupled equations which pass the Painlevé test and are integrable for any integer values of the parameter. Performing successive gauge transformations (the Miura transformations) on the system of equations we obtain a series of nonlinear equations.
A systematic method of constructing manifestly supersymmetric $1+1$-dimensional KP Lax hierarchies is presented. Closed expressions for the Lax operators in terms of superfield eigenfunctions are obtained. All hierarchy equations being eigenfunction equations are shown to be automatically invariant under the (extended) supersymmetry. The supersymmetric Lax models existing in the literature are found to be contained (up to a gauge equivalence) in our formalism.
We consider integrable boundary conditions for both discrete and continuum classical integrable models. Local integrals of motion generated by the corresponding transfer matrices give rise to time evolution equations for the initial Lax operator. We systematically identify the modified Lax pairs for both discrete and continuum boundary integrable models, depending on the classical r-matrix and the boundary matrix.
In this letter I analyze a covering jet manifold scheme, its relation to the invariant theory of the associated vector fields, and applications to the Lax-Sato-type integrability of nonlinear dispersionless differential systems. The related contact geometry linearization covering scheme is also discussed. The devised techniques are demonstrated for such nonlinear Lax-Sato integrable equations as Gibbons-Tsarev, ABC, Manakov-Santini and the differential Toda singular manifold equations.
The Calogero type matrix discretization scheme is applied to constructing the Lax type integrable discretizations of one wide enough class of nonlinear integrable dynamical systems on functional manifolds. Their Lie-algebraic structure and complete integrability related with co-adjoint orbits on the Markov co-algebras is discussed. It is shown that a set of conservation laws and the associated Poisson structure ensue as a byproduct of the approach devised. Based on the Lie algebras quasi-representation property the limiting procedure of finding the nonlinear dynamical systems on the correspond…
These lecture notes are devoted to the integrability of discrete systems and their relation to the theory of Yang-Baxter (YB) maps. Lax pairs play a significant role in the integrability of discrete systems. We introduce the notion of Lax pair by considering the well-celebrated doubly-infinite Toda lattice. In particular, we present solution of the Cauchy initial value problem via the method of the inverse scattering transform, provide a review of scattering theory of Jacobi matrices, and give the Riemann-Hilbert formulation of the inverse scattering transform. On the other hand, the Lax-Darbo…
The Hamiltonian representation for the hierarchy of Lax-type flows on a dual space to the Lie algebra of shift operators coupled with suitable eigenfunctions and adjoint eigenfunctions evolutions of associated spectral problems is found by means of a specially constructed Backlund transformation. The Hamiltonian description for the corresponding set of squared eigenfunction symmetry hierarchies is represented. The relation of these hierarchies with Lax integrable (2+1)-dimensional differential-difference systems and their triple Lax-type linearizations is analysed. The existence problem of a H…
The use of Lax pair tensors as a unifying framework for Killing tensors of arbitrary rank is discussed. Some properties of the tensorial Lax pair formulation are stated. A mechanical system with a well-known Lax representation -- the three-particle open Toda lattice -- is geometrized by a suitable canonical transformation. In this way the Toda lattice is realized as the geodesic system of a certain Riemannian geometry. By using different canonical transformations we obtain two inequivalent geometries which both represent the original system. Adding a timelike dimension gives four-dimensional s…
We present an approach for analyzing initial-boundary value problems which is formulated on the finite interval ($0\le x\le L$, where $L$ is a positive constant) for integrable equations whose Lax pairs involve $3\times 3$ matrices. Boundary value problems for integrable nonlinear evolution PDEs can be analyzed by the unified method introduced by Fokas and developed by him and his collaborators. In this paper, we show that the solution can be expressed in terms of the solution of a $3\times 3$ Riemann-Hilbert problem. The relevant jump matrices are explicitly given in terms of the three matrix…
The important unsolved problem in theory of integrable systems is to find conditions guaranteeing existence of a Lax representation for a given PDE. The use of the exotic cohomology of the symmetry algebras opens a way to formulate such conditions in internal terms of the PDEs under the study. In this paper we consider certain examples of infinite-dimensional Lie algebras with nontrivial second exotic cohomology groups and show that the Maurer-Cartan forms of the associated extensions of these Lie algebras generate Lax representations for integrable systems, both known and new ones.
We obtain via Bäcklund transformation the Hamiltonian representation for a Lax type nonlinear dynamical system hierarchy on a dual space to the Lie algebra of super-integral-differential operators of one anticommuting variable, extended by evolutions of the corresponding spectral problem eigenfunctions and adjoint eigenfunctions, as well as for the hierarchies of their additional symmetries. The relation of these hierarchies with the integrable by Lax (2|1+1)-dimensional supersymmetric Davey-Stewartson system is investigated.

We present (2+1)-dimensional generalizations of the k-constrained Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (k-cKP) hierarchy and corresponding matrix Lax representations that consist of two integro-differential operators. Additional reductions imposed on the Lax pairs lead to matrix generalizations of Davey-Stewartson systems (DS-I,DS-II,DS-III) and (2+1)-dimensional extensions of the modified Korteweg-de Vries and the Nizhnik equation. We also present an integro-differential Lax pair for a matrix version of a (2+1)-dimensional extension of the Chen-Lee-Liu equation.
We first derive an integrable deformed hierarchy of short pulse equation and their Lax representation. Then we concentrated on the solution of integrable deformed short pulse equation (IDSPE). By proposing a generalized reciprocal transformation, we find a new integrable deformed sine-Gordon equation (IDSGE) and its Lax representation. The multisoliton solutions, negaton solutions and positon solutions for the IDSGE and the N-loop soliton solutions, N-negaton and N-positon solutions for the IDSPE are presented. In the reduced case the new N-positon solutions and N-negaton solutions for short p…
We study a class of integrable non-linear differential equations related to the A.III-type symmetric spaces. These spaces are realized as factor groups of the form SU(N)/S(U(N-k) x U(k)). We use the Cartan involution corresponding to this symmetric space as an element of the reduction group and restrict generic Lax operators to this symmetric space. The symmetries of the Lax operator are inherited by the fundamental analytic solutions and give a characterization of the corresponding Riemann-Hilbert data.

We show that the integrable equations of hydrodynamic type admit nonlocal reductions. We first construct such reductions for a general Lax equation and then give several examples. The reduced nonlocal equations are of hydrodynamic type and integrable. They admit Lax representations and hence possess infinitely many conserved quantities.
We consider two-dimensional lattice equations defined on an elementary square of the Cartesian lattice and depending on the variables at the corners of the quadrilateral. For such equations the property often associated with integrability is that of "multidimensional consistency" (MDC): it should be possible to extend the equation from two to higher dimensions so that the embedded two-dimensional lattice equations are compatible. Usually compatibility is checked using "Consistency-Around-a-Cube" (CAC). In this context it is often assumed that the equations on the six sides of the cube are the …
The Davey-Stewartson I equation is a typical integrable equation in 2+1 dimensions. Its Lax system being essentially in 1+1 dimensional form has been found through nonlinearization from 2+1 dimensions to 1+1 dimensions. In the present paper, this essentially 1+1 dimensional Lax system is further nonlinearized into 1+0 dimensional Hamiltonian systems by taking the Bargmann constraints. It is shown that the resulting 1+0 dimensional Hamiltonian systems are completely integrable in Liouville sense by finding a full set of integrals of motion and proving their functional independence.
We introduce a class of integrable $l$-field first-order lattices together with corresponding Lax equations. These lattices may be represented as consistency condition for auxiliary linear systems defined on sequences of formal dressing operators. This construction provides simple way to build lattice Miura transformations between one-field lattice and $l$-field ($l\ge 2$) ones. We show that the lattices pertained to above class is in some sense compatible with KP flows and define the chains of constrained KP Lax operators.
We present a method of determining a Lax representation for similarity reductions of autonomous and non-autonomous partial difference equations. This method may be used to obtain Lax representations that are general enough to provide the Lax integrability for entire hierarchies of reductions. A main result is, as an example of this framework, how we may obtain the q-Painlevé equation whose group of Bäcklund transformations is an affine Weyl group of type E_6^{(1)} as a similarity reduction of the discrete Schwarzian Korteweg-de Vries equation.
Hexagonal circle patterns are introduced, and a subclass thereof is studied in detail. It is characterized by the following property: For every circle the multi-ratio of its six intersection points with neighboring circles is equal to -1. The relation of such patterns with an integrable system on the regular triangular lattice is established. A kind of a B"acklund transformation for circle patterns is studied. Further, a class of isomonodromic solutions of the aforementioned integrable system is introduced, including circle patterns analogons to the analytic functions $z^α$ and $\log z$.
We diagonalize the transfer matrix of a solvable vertex model constructed by combining the vector representation of U_q[Sl(n|m)] and its dual by means of the quantum inverse scattering framework. The algebraic Bethe ansatz solution consider all (n+m)!/(n!m!) possibilities of choosing the grading for arbitrary values of n and m. This allows us to derive the transfer matrix eigenvalues and the respective Bethe ansatz equations for general grading choices.
