We study the class of densely related groups. These are finitely generated (or more generally, compactly generated locally compact) groups satisfying a strong negation of being finitely presented, in the sense that new relations appear at all scales. Here, new relations means relations that do not follow from relations of smaller size. Being densely related is a quasi-isometry invariant among finitely generated groups.
We check that a densely related group has none of its asymptotic cones simply connected. In particular a lacunary hyperbolic group cannot be densely related.
We prove that the Grigorchuk group is densely related. We also show that a finitely generated group that is (infinite locally finite)-by-cyclic and which satisfies a law must be densely related. Given a class $\mathcal{C}$ of finitely generated groups, we consider the following dichotomy: every group in $\mathcal{C}$ is either finitely presented or densely related. We show that this holds within the class of nilpotent-by-cyclic groups and the class of metabelian groups. In contrast, this dichotomy is no longer true for the class of $3$-step solvable groups.
We study locally compact groups having all dense subgroups (locally) minimal. We call such groups densely (locally) minimal. In 1972 Prodanov proved that the infinite compact abelian groups having all subgroups minimal are precisely the groups $\mathbb Z_p$ of $p$-adic integers. In [31], we extended Prodanov's theorem to the non-abelian case at several levels. In this paper, we focus on the densely (locally) minimal abelian groups. We prove that in case that a topological abelian group $G$ is either compact or connected locally compact, then $G$ is densely locally minimal if and only if $G$ ei…
We prove that the automorphism group of the Urysohn diversity is a universal Polish group. Furthermore we show that the automorphism group of the rational Urysohn diversity has ample generics, a dense conjugacy class and that it embeds densely into the automorphism group of the (full) Urysohn diversity. It follows that this latter group also has a dense conjugacy class.
We derive presentations of the interval groups related to all quasi-Coxeter elements in the Coxeter group of type $D_n$. Type $D_n$ is the only infinite family of finite Coxeter groups that admits proper quasi-Coxeter elements. The presentations we obtain are over a set of generators in bijection with what we call a Carter generating set, and the relations are those defined by the related Carter diagram together with a twisted or a cycle commutator relator, depending on whether the quasi-Coxeter element is a Coxeter element or not. The proof is based on the description of two combinatorial tec…
We define and study the class of positively finitely related (PFR) profinite groups. Positive finite relatedness is a probabilistic property of profinite groups which provides a first step to defining higher finiteness properties of profinite groups which generalize the positively finitely generated groups introduced by Avinoam Mann. We prove many asymptotic characterisations of PFR groups, for instance we show the following: a finitely presented profinite group is PFR if and only if it has at most exponential representation growth, uniformly over finite fields (in other words: the completed g…
In this note we provide some counterexamples for the conjecture of Moretó on finite simple groups, which says that any finite simple group $G$ can determined in terms of its order $|G|$ and the number of elements of order $p$, where $p$ the largest prime divisor of $|G|$. Moreover, we show that this conjecture holds for all sporadic simple groups and alternating groups $A_n$, where $n\neq 8, 10$. Some related conjectures are also discussed.
In this paper, we show that each finite group $G$ containing at most $p^2$ Sylow $p$-subgroups for each odd prime number $p$, is a solvable group. In fact, we give a positive answer to the conjecture in \cite{Rob}.
In this paper we classify the finite groups satisfying the following property $P_4$: their orders of representatives are set-wise relatively prime for any 4 distinct non-central conjugacy classes.
I define three "measures" of the complicatedness of a finite group in terms of bases in permutation representations of the group, and consider their relationships to other measures.
A family of exotic fusion systems generalizing the group fusion systems on Sylow $p$-subgroups of $\mathrm{G}_2(p^a)$ and $\mathrm{Sp}_4(p^a)$ is constructed.
We consider classes of fundamental groups of complements of various kinds of codimension 2 embeddings and show that, in general, the problem of deciding whether or not a group in one class belongs to a smaller class is algorithmically unsolvable.
Garside theory emerged from the study of Artin groups and their generalizations. Finite-type Artin groups admit two types of interval Garside structures corresponding to their standard and dual presentations. Concerning affine Artin groups, Digne established interval Garside structures for two families of these groups by using their dual presentations. Recently, McCammond established that none of the remaining dual presentations (except for one additional case) correspond to interval Garside structures. In this paper, shifting attention from dual presentations to other nice presentations for t…
We study spectra of noncommutative dynamical systems, representations of fractal groups, and regular graphs. We explicitly compute these spectra for five examples of groups acting on rooted trees, and in three cases obtain totally disconnected sets.
We provide a complete description of the presentations of the interval groups related to quasi-Coxeter elements in finite Coxeter groups. In the simply laced cases, we show that each interval group is the quotient of the Artin group associated with the corresponding Carter diagram by the normal closure of a set of twisted cycle commutators, one for each 4-cycle of the diagram. Our techniques also reprove an analogous result for the Artin groups of finite Coxeter groups, which are interval groups corresponding to Coxeter elements. We also analyse the situation in the non-simply laced cases, whe…
To every dynamical system $(X,φ)$ over a totally disconnected compact space, we associate a left-orderable group $T(φ)$. It is defined as a group of homeomorphisms of the suspension of $(X,φ)$ which preserve every orbit of the suspension flow and act by dyadic piecewise linear homeomorphisms in the flow direction. We show that if the system is minimal, the group is simple, and if it is a subshift then the group is finitely generated. The proofs of these two statements are short and elementary, providing straightforward examples of finitely generated simple left-orderable groups. We show that i…
This is a biased survey for the Johnson homomorphisms of the automorphism groups of free groups. We just exposit some well known facts and recent developments for the Johnson homomorphisms and its related topics.
A (2,*)-group is a group that can be generated by two elements, one of which is an involution. We describe the method we have used to produce a census of all (2,*)-groups of order at most 6 000. Various well-known combinatorial structures are closely related to (2,*)-groups and we also obtain censuses of these as a corollary.
Given an extension $R \subseteq S$ of rings with same set of local units, inspired by the works of Miyashita, we construct four exact sequences of groups relating Picard's groups of $R$ and $S$.
We show that the twisted group C$^*$-algebra associated with a discrete FC-hypercentral group is simple (resp. has a unique tracial state) if and only if Kleppner's condition is satisfied. This generalizes a result of J. Packer for countable nilpotent groups. We also consider a larger class of groups, for which we can show that the corresponding reduced twisted group C$^*$-algebras have a unique tracial state if and only if Kleppner's condition holds.
When n is odd, consider the finite general linear and unitary groups of rank n, extended by the inverse transpose automorphism. There are elements in the extended groups which square to a regular unipotent element, and we evaluate the values of irreducible characters of the extended groups on these elements. Several intermediate results on real conjugacy classes and real-valued characters of these groups are obtained along the way.
We reduce a case of the hidden subgroup problem (HSP) in SL(2; q), PSL(2; q), and PGL(2; q), three related families of finite groups of Lie type, to efficiently solvable HSPs in the affine group AGL(1; q). These groups act on projective space in an almost 3-transitive way, and we use this fact in each group to distinguish conjugates of its Borel (upper triangular) subgroup, which is also the stabilizer subgroup of an element of projective space. Our observation is mainly group-theoretic, and as such breaks little new ground in quantum algorithms. Nonetheless, these appear to be the first posit…
Consider an infinite tree. A hierarchomorphism (spheromorphism) is a homeomorphism of the absolute which can be extended to the tree except a finite subtree. Examples of groups of hierarchomorphisms: groups of locally analitic diffeomorphisms of $p$-adic line; also Richard Thompson groups. The groups of hierarchomorphisms have some properties similar to the group of diffeomorphisms of the circle. We discuss actions of groups of ierarchomorphisms in some natural Hilbert spaces associated with trees.
We construct certain orbifold compactifications of the moduli stack of pointed stable curves over $\mathbb C$ and study their fundamental groups by means of their quantum representations. This enables to construct interesting Kähler groups and to settle most of the candidates for a counter-example to the Shafarevich conjecture on holomorphic convexity proposed in 1998 by Bogomolov and Katzarkov, using TQFT representations of the mapping class groups.
