In [BaSc2] the authors introduced a much weaker homotopical structure than a model category, called a "weak cofibration category". We further showed that a small weak cofibration category induces in a natural way a model category structure on its ind-category, provided the ind-category satisfies a certain two out of three property. The purpose of this paper is to serve as a companion to the papers above, proving results which say that if a certain property or structure exists in the weak cofibration category, then the same property or structure also holds in the induced model structure on the ind-category. Namely, we consider the property of being left proper and the structures of a monoidal category and a category tensored over a monoidal category (in a way that is compatible with the weak cofibration structure). For the purpose of future reference, we consider the more general situation where we only have an "almost model structure" on the ind-category.
In this note we introduce a notion of free cofibrations of permutative categories. We show that each cofibration of permutative categories is a retract of a free cofibration.
We show that the quasicategory of frames of a cofibration category, introduced by the second-named author, is equivalent to its simplicial localization.
We prove that the homotopy prederivator of a cofibration category is equivalent to the homotopy prederivator of its associated quasi-category of frames, as introduced by Szumiło. We use this comparison result to deduce various abstract properties of the obtained prederivators.
Cofibration categories are a formalization of homotopy theory useful for dealing with homotopy colimits that exist on the level of models as colimits of cofibrant diagrams. In this paper, we deal with their enriched version. Our main result claims that the category $[\mathcal{C},\mathcal{M}]$ of enriched diagrams equipped with the projective structure inherits a structure of a cofibration category whenever $\mathcal{C}$ is locally cofibrant (or, more generally, locally flat).
We give an explicit way of calculating the set of homotopy classes of morphisms from a Tamsamani n-category A to another one B. This calculation uses a Reedy-cofibrant cosimplicial resolution of A, using a new notion of ``free cofibration'' of n-precats. The free cofibrations of n-precats seem to be the analogue for n-categories of the Bousfield-Kan cofibrations in the theory of diagrams.
We prove that relative functors out of a cofibration category are essentially the same as relative functors which are only defined on the subcategory of cofibrations. As an application we give a new construction of the functor that assigns to a groupoid its groupoid $C^*$-algebra and thereby its topological $K$-theory spectrum.
Many examples of obstruction theory can be formulated as the study of when a lift exists in a commutative square. Typically, one of the maps is a cofibration of some sort and the opposite map is a fibration, and there is a functorial obstruction class that determines whether a lift exists. Working in an arbitrary pointed proper model category, we classify the cofibrations that have such an obstruction theory with respect to all fibrations. Up to weak equivalence, retract, and cobase change, they are the cofibrations with weakly contractible target. Equivalently, they are the retracts of princi…
We define Anderson-Brown-Cisinski (ABC) cofibration categories, and construct homotopy colimits of diagrams of objects in ABC cofibration categories. Homotopy colimits for Quillen model categories are obtained as a particular case. We attach to each ABC cofibration category a left Heller derivator. A dual theory is developed for homotopy limits in ABC fibration categories and for right Heller derivators. These constructions provide a natural framework for 'doing homotopy theory' in ABC (co)fibration categories.
We show that the categories PsTop and Lim of pseudotopological spaces and limit spaces, respectively, admit cofibration category structures, and that PsTop admits a model category structure, giving several ways to simultaneously study the homotopy theory of classical topological spaces, combinatorial spaces such as graphs and matroids, and metric spaces endowed with a privileged scale, in addition to spaces of maps between them. In the process, we give a sufficient condition for a topological construct which contains compactly generated Hausdorff spaces as a subcategory to admit an $I$-categor…
In this paper, we show that the Thomason model structure restricts to a Quillen equivalent cofibrantly generated model structure on the category of acyclic categories, whose generating cofibrations are the same as those generating the Thomason model structure. To understand the Thomason model structure, we need to have a closer look at the (barycentric) subdivision endofunctor on the category of simplicial sets. This functor has a well known right adjoint, called Kan's Ex functor. Taking the subdivision twice and then the fundamental category yields a left adjoint of an adjunction between the …
We prove, without set theoretic assumptions, that every locally presentable category C endowed with a tractable cofibrantly generated class of cofibrations has a unique minimal (or left induced) Quillen model structure. More generally, for any set S of arrows in C we construct the minimal model structure on C with the prescribed cofibrations and making all the arrows of S weak equivalences. We describe its class of equivalences as the "smallest Cisinski localizer containing S". Our proof rely on a careful use of the fat small object argument and J.~Lurie's "good colimits" technology and on the…
In [BaSc2], the author and Tomer Schlank introduced a much weaker homotopical structure than a model category, which we called a "weak cofibration category". We further showed that a small weak cofibration category induces in a natural way a model category structure on its indcategory, provided the ind-category satisfies a certain two out of three property. The main purpose of this paper is to give sufficient intrinsic conditions on a weak cofibration category for this two out of three property to hold. We consider an application to the category of compact metrizable spaces, and thus obtain a …
We prove that the homotopy theory of cofibration categories is equivalent to the homotopy theory of cocomplete quasicategories. This is achieved by presenting both homotopy theories as fibration categories and constructing an explicit equivalence between them.
In this paper we explain certain systematic differences between algebraic and topological triangulated categories. A triangulated category is algebraic if it admits a differential graded model, and topological if it admits a model in the form of a stable cofibration category. The precise statements use the 'n-order' of a triangulated category, for a natural number n. The n-order is a non-negative integer (or infinity) and measures `how strongly' n annihilates objects of the form Y/n. We show the following results: the n-order of an algebraic triangulated category is infinite; for every prime p…
Triangulated categories arising in algebra can often be described as the homotopy category of a pretriangulated dg-category, a category enriched in chain complexes with a natural notion of shifts and cones that is accessible with all the machinery of homological algebra. Dg-categories are algebraic models of $\infty$-categories and thus fit into a wide ecosystem of higher-categorical models and translations between them. In this paper we describe an equivalence between two methods to turn a pretriangulated dg-category into a quasicategory. The dg-nerve of a dg-category is a quasicategory whose…
If M is a model category and Z is an object of M, then there are model category structures on the category of objects of M over Z and the category of objects of M under Z under which a map is a cofibration, fibration, or weak equivalence if and only if its image in M under the forgetful functor is, respectively, a cofibration, fibration, or weak equivalence. It is asserted without proof in "Model categories and their localizations" that if M is cofibrantly generated, cellular, or proper, then so is the category of objects of M over Z. The purpose of this note is to fill in the proofs of those …
The paper studies the problem of the cofibrant generation of a model category. We prove that, assuming Vopěnka's principle, every cofibrantly generated model category is Quillen equivalent to a combinatorial model category. We discuss cases where this result implies that the class of weak equivalences in a cofibrantly generated model category is accessibly embedded. We also prove a necessary condition for a model category to be cofibrantly generated by a set of generating cofibrations between cofibrant objects.
Cofibrations are defined in the category of Frölicher spaces by weakening the analog of the classical definition to enable smooth homotopy extensions to be more easily constructed, using flattened unit intervals. We later relate smooth cofibrations to smooth neighborhood deformation retracts. The notion of smooth neighborhood deformation retract gives rise to an analogous result that a closed Frölicher subspace $A$ of the Frölicher space $X$ is a smooth neighborhood deformation retract of $X$ if and only if the inclusion $i: A\hookrightarrow X$ comes from a certain subclass of cofibrations. As…
We define a new notion of an algebraic model structure, in which the cofibrations and fibrations are retracts of coalgebras for comonads and algebras for monads, and prove "algebraic" analogs of classical results. Using a modified version of Quillen's small object argument, we show that every cofibrantly generated model structure in the usual sense underlies a cofibrantly generated algebraic model structure. We show how to pass a cofibrantly generated algebraic model structure across an adjunction, and we characterize the algebraic Quillen adjunction that results. We prove that pointwise natur…
In this paper, we define a generalization of indexed categories and contextual categories which we call contextually indexed (contextual) categories. While contextual categories are models of ordinary type theories, contextually indexed (contextual) categories are models of indexed type theories. We also define type-theoretic semi-fibration categories which generalize type-theoretic fibration categories. Every model category in which cofibrations are stable under pullbacks is a type-theoretic semi-fibration category. We show that type-theoretic semi-fibration category gives rise to a contextua…
It is proved that there exists a left determined model structure of weak transition systems with respect to the class of monomorphisms and that it restricts to left determined model structures on cubical and regular transition systems. Then it is proved that, in these three model structures, for any higher dimensional transition system containing at least one transition, the fibrant replacement contains a transition between each pair of states. This means that the fibrant replacement functor does not preserve the causal structure. As a conclusion, we explain why working with star-shaped transi…
We show that a map between fibrant objects in a closed model category is a weak equivalence if and only if it has the right homotopy extension lifting property with respect to all cofibrations. The dual statement holds for maps between cofibrant objects.
We construct a model structure on the category of cubical sets with connections whose cofibrations are the monomorphisms and whose fibrant objects are defined by the right lifting property with respect to inner open boxes, the cubical analogue of inner horns. We show that this model structure is Quillen equivalent to the Joyal model structure on simplicial sets via the triangulation functor. As an application, we show that cubical quasicategories admit a convenient notion of a mapping space, which we use to characterize the weak equivalences between fibrant objects in our model structure as DK…
We study the accessibility properties of trivial cofibrations and weak equivalences in a combinatorial model category and prove an estimate for the accessibility rank of weak equivalences. In particular, we show that the class of weak equivalences between simplicial sets is finitely accessible.
We prove that each of the model structures for ($n$-trivial, saturated) comical sets on the category of marked cubical sets having only faces and degeneracies (without connections) is Quillen equivalent to the corresponding model structure for ($n$-trivial, saturated) complicial sets on the category of marked simplicial sets, as well as to the corresponding comical model structures on cubical sets with connections. As a consequence, we show that the cubical Joyal model structure on cubical sets without connections is equivalent to its analogues on cubical sets with connections and to the Joyal…
In this article, we develop a notion of Quillen bifibration which combines the two notions of Grothendieck bifibration and of Quillen model structure. In particular, given a bifibration $p:\mathcal E\to\mathcal B$, we describe when a family of model structures on the fibers $\mathcal E_A$ and on the basis category $\mathcal B$ combines into a model structure on the total category $\mathcal E$, such that the functor $p$ preserves cofibrations, fibrations and weak equivalences. Using this Grothendieck construction for model structures, we revisit the traditional definition of Reedy model structu…
The relative cell complexes with respect to a generating set of cofibrations are an important class of morphisms in any model structure. In the particular case of the standard (algebraic) model structure on $\textbf{Top}$, we give a new expression of these morphisms by defining a category of relative cell complexes, which has a forgetful functor to the arrow category. This allows us to prove a conjecture of Richard Garner: considering the algebraic weak factorisation system given in that algebraic model structure between cofibrations and trivial fibrations, we show that the category of relativ…
For a given group $G$ and a collection of subgroups $\mathcal F$ of $G$, we show that there exist a left induced model structure on the category of right $G$-simplicial sets, in which the weak equivalences and cofibrations are the maps that induce weak equivalences and cofibrations on the $H$-orbits for all $H$ in $\mathcal F$. This gives a model categorical criterion for maps that induce weak equivalences on $H$-orbits to be weak equivalences in the $\mathcal F$-model structure.
In this paper we show how to modify cofibrations in a monoidal model category so that the tensor unit becomes cofibrant while keeping the same weak equivalences. We obtain aplications to enriched categories and coloured operads in stable homotopy theory.
We show that when using the underlying positive model structure on symmetric spectra one obtains cofibrancy conditions for operadic constructions under much milder hypothesis than one would need for general categories. Our main result provides such an analysis for a key operation, the "relative composition product" $\circ_{\mathcal{O}}$ between right and left $\mathcal{O}$-modules over a spectral operad $\mathcal{O}$, and as a consequence we recover (and usually strengthen) previous results establishing the Quillen invariance of model structures on categories of algebras via weak equivalences …
This book is an account of certain topics in general and algebraic topology. Instead of laying out a synopsis of each chapter, here is a sample of some of what is taken up: 1) Nilpotency and its role in homotopy theory. 2) Bousfield's theory of the localization of spaces and spectra. 3) Homotopy limits and colimits and their applications. 4) The James construction, symmetric products, and the Dold$-$Thom theorem. 5) Brown and Adams representability in the setting of triangulated categories 6) Operads and the May$-$Thomason theorem on the uniqueness of infinite loop space machines. 7) The plus …
In his book on model categories, Hovey asked whether the 2-category $\mathbf{Mod}$ of model categories admits a "model 2-category structure" whose weak equivalences are the Quillen equivalences. We show that $\mathbf{Mod}$ does not have pullbacks and so cannot form a model 2-category. This lack of pullbacks can be traced to the two-out-of-three axiom on the weak equivalences of a model category. Accordingly, we define a premodel category to be a complete and cocomplete category equipped with two nested weak factorization systems. Combinatorial premodel categories form a complete and cocomplete…
We provide conditions on a monoidal model category $\mathcal{M}$ so that the category of commutative monoids in $\mathcal{M}$ inherits a model structure from $\mathcal{M}$ in which a map is a weak equivalence or fibration if and only if it is so in $\mathcal{M}$. We then investigate properties of cofibrations of commutative monoids, rectification between $E_\infty$-algebras and commutative monoids, the relationship between commutative monoids and monoidal Bousfield localization functors, when the category of commutative monoids can be made left proper, and functoriality of the passage from a c…
The category of $\mathfrak{C}$-colored symmetric operads admits a cofibrantly generated model category structure. In this paper, we show that this model structure satisfies a relative left properness condition, i.e., that the class of weak equivalences between $Σ$-cofibrant operads is closed under cobase change along cofibrations. We also provide an example of Dwyer which shows that the model structure on $\mathfrak{C}$-colored symmetric operads is not left proper.
There is an ``algebraisation'' of the notion of weak factorisation system (w.f.s.) known as a natural weak factorisation system. In it, the two classes of maps of a w.f.s. are replaced by two categories of maps-with-structure, where the extra structure on a map now encodes a choice of liftings with respect to the other class. This extra structure has pleasant consequences: for example, a natural w.f.s. on C induces a canonical natural w.f.s. structure on any functor category [A, C]. In this paper, we define cofibrantly generated natural weak factorisation systems by analogy with cofibrantly ge…
A common technique for producing a new model category structure is to lift the fibrations and weak equivalences of an existing model structure along a right adjoint. Formally dual but technically much harder is to lift the cofibrations and weak equivalences along a left adjoint. For either technique to define a valid model category, there is a well-known necessary "acyclicity" condition. We show that for a broad class of "accessible model structures" - a generalization introduced here of the well-known combinatorial model structures - this necessary condition is also sufficient in both the rig…
We discuss the dendroidal notion of weak higher categories introduced by Moerdijk and Weiss and we prove that dendroidal weak 2-categories are equivalent to bicategories.
We develop a theory of weak omega categories that will be accessible to anyone who is familiar with the language of categories and functors and who has encountered the definition of a strict 2-category. The most remarkable feature of this theory is its simplicity. We build upon an idea due to Jacques Penon by defining a weak omega category to be a span of omega magmas with certain properties. (An omega magma is a reflexive, globular set with a system of partially defined, binary composition operations which respects the globular structure.) Categories, bicategories, strict omega categories and…
This paper continues the development of a simplicial theory of weak omega-categories, by studying categories which are enriched in weak complicial sets. These complicial Gray-categories generalise both the Kan complex enriched categories of homotopy theory and the Gray-categories of weak 3-category theory. We derive a simplicial nerve construction, which is closely related to Cordier and Porter's homotopy coherent nerve, and show that this faithfully represents complicial Gray-categories as weak complicial sets. The category of weak complicial sets may itself be canonically enriched to a compl…
We show that the homotopy colimit construction for diagrams of categories with an operad action, recently introduced by Fiedorowicz, Stelzer and Vogt, has the desired homotopy type for diagrams of weak braided monoidal categories. This provides a more flexible way to realize E-2 spaces categorically.
We explain how any cofibrantly generated weak factorisation system on a category may be equipped with a universally and canonically determined choice of cofibrant replacement. We then apply this to the theory of weak omega-categories, showing that the universal and canonical cofibrant replacement of the operad for strict omega-categories is precisely Leinster's operad for weak omega-categories.
We introduce a notion of "weak model category" which is a weakening of the notion of Quillen model category, still sufficient to define a homotopy category, Quillen adjunctions, Quillen equivalences and most of the usual construction of categorical homotopy theory. Both left and right semi-model categories are weak model categories, and the opposite of a weak model category is again a weak model category. The main advantages of weak model categories is that they are easier to construct than Quillen model categories. In particular we give some simple criteria on two weak factorization systems f…
In this article, we study model structures on the category of finite graphs with $\times$-homotopy equivalences as the weak equivalences. We show that there does not exist an analogue of Strøm-Hurewicz model structure on this category of graphs. More interestingly, we show that this category of graphs with $\times$-homotopy equivalences does not have a model structure whenever the class of cofibrations is a subclass of graph inclusions.
We prove general adjoint functor theorems for weakly (co)complete $n$-categories. This class of $n$-categories includes the homotopy $n$-categories of (co)complete $\infty$-categories, so these $n$-categories do not admit all small (co)limits in general. We also introduce Brown representability for (homotopy) $n$-categories and prove a Brown representability theorem for localizations of compactly generated $n$-categories. This class of $n$-categories includes the homotopy $n$-categories of presentable $\infty$-categories if $n \geq 2$, and the homotopy $n$-categories of presentable stable $\in…
We consider four categories: the category of diagrams of small categories indexed by a given small category O, the (comma) category of small categories over O, the category of diagrams of simplicial sets indexed by O, and the category of simplicial sets over the nerve of O. Fritsch and Golasinski claimed that these four categories have equivalent homotopy categories but, in fact, their proof contains an error and the homotopy categories are not equivalent with the weak equivalences they use in the comma categories. We show here that the correct weak equivalences are the ``weak fibre homotopy e…
In a previous work, we have introduced a weakening of Quillen model categories called weak model categories. They still allow all the usual constructions of model category theory, but are easier to construct and are in some sense better behaved. In this paper we continue to develop their general theory by introducing combinatorial and accessible weak model categories. We give simple necessary and sufficient conditions under which such a weak model category can be extended into a left and/or right semi-model category. As an application, we recover Cisinski-Olschok theory and generalize it to we…
We investigate the categories of weak maps associated to an algebraic weak factorisation system (AWFS) in the sense of Grandis-Tholen. For any AWFS on a category with an initial object, cofibrant replacement forms a comonad, and the category of (left) weak maps associated to the AWFS is by definition the Kleisli category of this comonad. We exhibit categories of weak maps as a kind of "homotopy category", that freely adjoins a section for every "acyclic fibration" (=right map) of the AWFS; and using this characterisation, we give an alternate description of categories of weak maps in terms of …
An n-truncated model structure on simplicial (pre-)sheaves is described having as weak equivalences maps that induce isomorphisms on certain homotopy sheaves only up to degree n. Starting from one of Jardine's intermediate model structures we construct such an n-type model structure via Bousfield-Friedlander localization and exhibit useful generating sets of trivial cofibrations. Injectively fibrant objects in these categories are called n-hyperstacks. The whole setup can consequently be viewed as a description of the homotopy theory of higher hyperstacks. More importantly, we construct analog…
We revisit Kapranov and Voevodsky's idea of spaces modelled on combinatorial pasting diagrams, now as a framework for higher-dimensional rewriting and the basis of a model of weak omega-categories. In the first part, we elaborate on Steiner's theory of directed complexes as a combinatorial foundation. We individuate convenient classes of directed complexes and develop the theory of diagrammatic sets relative to one such class. We study a notion of equivalence internal to a diagrammatic set, and single out as models of weak omega-categories those diagrammatic sets whose every composable diagram…
In a previous paper we lifted Charles Rezk's complete Segal model structure on the category of simplicial spaces to a Quillen equivalent one on the category of "relative categories," and our aim in this successor paper is to obtain a more explicit description of the weak equivalences in this model structure by showing that these weak equivalences are exactly the DK-equivalences, i.e. those maps between relative categories which induce a weak equivalence between their simplicial localizations.
