The reader of doi:10.1016/j.topol.2010.08.006 might conjecture that Δ(\barΠ_n)/G is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres for any n>=3 and any subgroup G<S_n. We disprove this by showing that Δ(\barΠ_p)/C_p is not homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres for any prime number p>=5.
Let $R$ be a ring spectrum and $ E\to X$ an $R$-module bundle of rank $n$. Our main result is to identify the homotopy type of the group-like monoid of homotopy automorphisms of this bundle, $hAut^R(E)$. This will generalize the result regarding $R$-line bundles previously proven by the authors. The main application is the calculation of the homotopy type of $BGL_n(End ((L))$ where $L \to X$ is any $R$-line bundle, and $End (L)$ is the ring spectrum of endomorphisms. In the case when such a bundle is the fiberwise suspension spectrum of a principal bundle over a manifold, $G \to P \to M$, this…
D. K. Biss (Topology and its Applications 124 (2002) 355-371) introduced the topological fundamental group and presented some interesting basic properties of the notion. In this article we intend to extend the above notion to homotopy groups and try to prove some similar basic properties of the topological homotopy groups. We also study more on the topology of the topological homotopy groups in order to find necessary and sufficient conditions for which the topology is discrete. Moreover, we show that studying topological homotopy groups may be more useful than topological fundamental groups.
Digital topology is part of the ongoing endeavour to understand and analyze digitized images. With a view to supporting this endeavour, many notions from algebraic topology have been introduced into the setting of digital topology. But some of the most basic notions from homotopy theory remain largely absent from the digital topology literature. We embark on a development of homotopy theory in digital topology, and define such fundamental notions as function spaces, path spaces, and cofibrations in this setting. We establish digital analogues of basic homotopy-theoretic properties such as the …
In this paper, using the topology on the set of shape morphisms between arbitrary topological spaces $X$, $Y$, $Sh(X,Y)$, defined by Cuchillo-Ibanez et al. in 1999, we consider a topology on the shape homotopy groups of arbitrary topological spaces which make them Hausdorff topological groups. We then exhibit an example in which $\checkπ_k^{top}$ succeeds in distinguishing the shape type of $X$ and $Y$ while $\checkπ_k$ fails, for all $k\in \Bbb{N}$. Moreover, we present some basic properties of topological shape homotopy groups, among them commutativity of $\checkπ_k^{top}$ with finite produc…
Uchillo-Ibanez et al. introduced a topology on the sets of shape morphisms between arbitrary topological spaces in 1999. In this paper, applying a similar idea, we introduce a topology on the set of coarse shape morphisms $Sh^*(X,Y)$, for arbitrary topological spaces $X$ and $Y$. In particular, we can consider a topology on the coarse shape homotopy group of a topological space $(X,x)$, $Sh^*((S^k,*),(X,x))=\checkπ_k^{*}(X,x)$, which makes it a Hausdorff topological group. Moreover, we study some properties of these topological coarse shape homotopoy groups such as second countability, movabil…
Given a $C_\infty$ coalgebra $C_*$, a strict dg Hopf algebra $H_*$, and a twisting cochain $τ:C_* \rightarrow H_*$ such that $Im(τ) \subset Prim(H_*)$, we describe a procedure for obtaining an $A_\infty$ coalgebra on $C_* \otimes H_*$. This is an extension of Brown's work on twisted tensor products. We apply this procedure to obtain an $A_\infty$ coalgebra model of the chains on the free loop space $LM$ based on the $C_\infty$ coalgebra structure of $H_*(M)$ induced by the diagonal map $M \rightarrow M \times M$ and the Hopf algebra model of the based loop space given by $T(H_*(M)[-1])$. When …
Let M be a closed, oriented, n -manifold, and LM its free loop space. Chas and Sullivan defined a commutative algebra structure in the homology of LM, and a Lie algebra structure in its equivariant homology. These structures are known as the string topology loop product and string bracket, respectively. In this paper we prove that these structures are homotopy invariants in the following sense. Let f : M_1 \to M_2 be a homotopy equivalence of closed, oriented n -manifolds. Then the induced equivalence, Lf : LM_1 \to LM_2 induces a ring isomorphism in homology, and an isomorphism of Lie algebra…
Modular forms appear in many facets of mathematics, and have played important roles in geometry, mathematical physics, number theory, representation theory, topology, and other areas. Around 1994, motivated by technical issues in homotopy theory, Mark Mahowald, Haynes Miller and I constructed a topological refinement of modular forms, which we call {\em topological modular forms}. At the Zurich ICM I sketched a program designed to relate topological modular forms to invariants of manifolds, homotopy groups of spheres, and ordinary modular forms. This program has recently been completed and new…
An injective word over a finite alphabet $V$ is a sequence $w=v_1v_2\cdots v_t$ of distinct elements of $V$. The set $\mathrm{inj}(V)$ of injective words on $V$ is partially ordered by inclusion. A complex of injective words is the order complex $Δ(W)$ of a subposet $W \subset \mathrm{inj}(V)$. Complexes of injective words arose recently in applications of algebraic topology to neuroscience, and are of independent interest in topology and combinatorics. In this article we mainly study Permutation Complexes, i.e. complexes of injective words $Δ(W)$, where $W$ is the downward closed subposet of …
The space of orientation-compatible almost complex structures on the six-dimensional sphere naturally contains a copy of seven-dimensional real projective space. We show that the inclusion induces an isomorphism on fundamental groups and rational homotopy groups. We also compute the homotopy fiber of the inclusion and the homotopy groups of the space of almost complex structures in terms of the homotopy groups of the seven-dimensional sphere. Our approach lends itself to generalization to components of almost complex structures with vanishing first Chern class on six-manifolds.
This book introduces a new context for global homotopy theory, i.e., equivariant homotopy theory with universal symmetries. Many important equivariant theories naturally exist not just for a particular group, but in a uniform way for all groups in a specific class. Prominent examples are equivariant stable homotopy, equivariant $K$-theory or equivariant bordism. Global equivariant homotopy theory studies such uniform phenomena, i.e., the adjective `global' refers to simultaneous and compatible actions of all compact Lie groups. We give a self-contained treatment of unstable and stable global h…
For a discrete poset $\mathcal X$, McCord proved that the natural map $|{\mathcal X}|\to {\mathcal X}$, from the order complex to the poset with the Up topology, is a weak homotopy equivalence. Much later, uZivaljević defined the notion of order complex for a topological poset. For a large class of such topological posets we prove the analog of McCord's theorem, namely that the natural map from the order complex to the topological poset with the Up topology is a weak homotopy equivalence. An example is the Grassmann poset of proper non-zero linear subspaces of $\R^{n+1}$. Here, Vassiliev had c…
The purpose of this paper is to study the topology of certain toric varieties $X_I$, arising as quotients of the action of $\C^*$ on complements of arrangements of coordinate subspaces in $\C^n$, and to improve the homotopy stability dimension for the inclusion map $i_d:\Hol_d^*(S^2,X_I)\to \Map_d^*(S^2,X_I)$ given in \cite{GKY1} by using spectral sequences induced from simplicial resolutions.
Let X be a simply connected Riemannian manifold. Until now, quantitative topology has used Sullivan's rational homotopy theory as the bridge between geometric information on X and torsion-free homotopy theoretic information on X. In this paper we introduce Chen's iterated integrals on the based loop space of X as a new bridge between these two areas. We give two applications: finding upper bounds for Gromov's distortion of higher homotopy groups on X and also proving the non-existence of homologically non-trivial small-volume cycles in the space of loops on X of length at most L.
This is an expository article about operads in homotopy theory written as a chapter for an upcoming book. It concentrates on what the author views as the basic topics in the homotopy theory of operadic algebras: the definition of operads, the definition of algebras over operads, structural aspects of categories of algebras over operads, model structures on algebra categories, and comparison of algebra categories when changing operad or underlying category. In addition, it includes two applications of the theory: The original application to $n$-fold loop spaces, and an application to algebraic …
By generalizing the whisker topology on the $n$th homotopy group of pointed space $(X, x_0)$, denoted by $π_n^{wh}(X, x_0)$, we show that $π_n^{wh}(X, x_0)$ is a topological group if $n \ge 2$. Also, we present some necessary and sufficient conditions for $π_n^{wh}(X,x_0)$ to be discrete, Hausdorff and indiscrete. Then we prove that $L_n(X,x_0)$ the natural epimorphic image of the Hawaiian group $\mathcal{H}_n(X, x_0)$ is equal to the set of all classes of convergent sequences to the identity in $π_n^{wh}(X, x_0)$. As a consequence, we show that $L_n(X, x_0) \cong L_n(Y, y_0)$ if $π_n^{wh}(X, …
In this paper we study the relationship between the moment-angle complex Z_k and the Davis-Januskiewicz space DJ(K) for a class of complexes K named missing-face complexes. If K has n vertices we consider the homotopy fibration sequence Z_k --> DJ(K) --> M where M is a product of n copies of infinite complex projective space. We observe that for such K, Z_k is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres, and then show that under this equivalence the map Z_k --> DJ(K) is homotopic to a wedge sum of higher Whitehead products and iterated Whitehead products.
We study string topology for classifying spaces of connected compact Lie groups, drawing connections with Hochschild cohomology and equivariant homotopy theory. First, for a compact Lie group $G$, we show that the string topology prospectrum $LBG^{-TBG}$ is equivalent to the homotopy fixed-point prospectrum for the conjugation action of $G$ on itself, $G^{hG}$. Dually, we identify $LBG^{-ad}$ with the homotopy orbit spectrum $(DG)_{hG}$, and study ring and co-ring structures on these spectra. Finally, we show that in homology, these products may be identified with the Gerstenhaber cup product …
The generalized string topology construction of Gruher and Salvatore assigns to any bundle of $E_n$-algebras $A$ over a closed oriented manifold $M$ a collection of intersection-type operations on the homology of the total space. These operations are realized by an $H_n$-ring structure on the Thom spectrum $A^{-TM}$ under the Thom isomorphism. We rigidify and extend this construction to a functor connecting the homotopy theory of spaces and spectra parametrized by $M$ to the homotopy theory of module spectra over the Atiyah-Milnor-Spanier-Whitehead dual $M^{-TM} \simeq \bbD M$. Then, using an …
The loop product is an operation in string topology. Cohen and Jones gave a homotopy theoretic realization of the loop product as a classical ring spectrum $LM^{-TM}$ for a manifold $M$. Using this, they presented a proof of the statement that the loop product is isomorphic to the Gerstenhaber cup product on the Hochschild cohomology $HH^*(C^*(M)\,;C^*(M))$ for simply connected $M$. However, some parts of their proof are technically difficult to justify. The main aim of the present paper is to give detailed modification to a geometric part of their proof. To do so, we set up an "up to higher h…
The complete enriched Lie algebras constitue the natural extension of graded Lie algebras for connected spaces. Each complete enriched Lie algebra is the rational homotopy Lie algebra of a connected space. This text is the first part of a general study of those Lie algebras
The fundamental bigroupoid of a topological space is one way of capturing its homotopy 2-type. When the space is semilocally 2-connected, one can lift the construction to a bigroupoid internal to the category of topological spaces, as Brown and Danesh-Naruie lifted the fundamental groupoid to a topological groupoid. For locally relatively contractible spaces the resulting topological bigroupoid is locally trivial in a way analogous to the case of the topologised fundamental groupoid.
We show that there are homotopy equivalences $h:N\to M$ between closed manifolds which are induced by cell-like maps $p:N\to X$ and $q:M\to X$ but which are not homotopic to homeomorphisms. The phenomenon is based on construction of cell-like maps that kill certain $\mathbb L$-classes. The image space in these constructions is necessarily infinite-dimensional. In dimension $>6$ we classify all such homotopy equivalences. As an application, we show that such homotopy equivalences are realized by deformations of Riemannian manifolds in Gromov-Hausdorff space preserving a contractibility function…
This work was intended as an attempt to investigate a model of irreversible process and natural phenomena. For this, we introduce the notion of irreversible path (that for brevity we write ir-path), ir-homotopy, ir-contractible space, and Lusternik-Schnirelmann ir-category by equipping the $I=[0,1]$ with left order topology. We will restrict the irreversibility of definitions to $T_0$ Spaces, such that for $T_1$ spaces, the ir-paths are constant. After providing some theorems and properties of these notions, eventually, we prove that Lusternik-Schnirelmann ir-category is an invariant of ir-hom…
We combine Homotopy Type Theory with axiomatic cohesion, expressing the latter internally with a version of "adjoint logic" in which the discretization and codiscretization modalities are characterized using a judgmental formalism of "crisp variables". This yields type theories that we call "spatial" and "cohesive", in which the types can be viewed as having independent topological and homotopical structure. These type theories can then be used to study formally the process by which topology gives rise to homotopy theory (the "fundamental $\infty$-groupoid" or "shape"), disentangling the "iden…
We show that if U is a hypercover of a topological space X then the natural map from hocolim U to X is a weak equivalence. This fact is used to construct topological realization functors for the A^1-homotopy theory of schemes over real and complex fields.
We prove a conjecture of Bahri, Bendersky, Cohen and Gitler: if K is a shifted simplicial complex on n vertices, X_1,..., X_n are spaces and CX_i is the cone on X_i, then the polyhedral product determined by K and the pairs (CX_i,X_i) is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of suspensions of smashes of the X_i's. This generalises earlier work of the two authors in the special case where each X_i is a loop space. Connections are made to toric topology, combinatorics, and classical homotopy theory.
In this paper we explore new relations between Algebraic Topology and the theory of Hopf Algebras. For an arbitrary topological space $X$, the loop space homology $H_*(ΩΣX; \coefZ)$ is a Hopf algebra. We introduce a new homotopy invariant of a topological space $X$ taking for its value the isomorphism class (over the integers) of the Hopf algebra $H_*(ΩΣX; \coefZ)$. This invariant is trivial if and only if the Hopf algebra $H_*(ΩΣX; \coefZ)$ is isomorphic to a Lie-Hopf algebra, that is, to a primitively generated Hopf algebra. We show that for a given $X$ these invariants are obstructions to t…
Given an infinity-category C, one can naturally construct an infinity-category Fam(C) of families of objects in C indexed by infinity-groupoids. An ordinary categorical version of this construction was used by Borceux and Janelidze in the study of generalized covering maps in categorical Galois theory. In this paper, we develop the homotopy theory of such "parametrized families" as generalization of the classical homotopy theory of spaces. In particular, we study homotopy-theoretical constructions that arise from the fundamental infinity-groupoids of families in an infinity-category. In the sa…
A geometric approach to the stable homotopy groups of spheres is developed in this paper, based on the Pontryagin-Thom construction. The task of this approach is to obtain an alternative proof of the Hill-Hopkins-Ravenel theorem [H-H-R] on Kervaire invariants in all dimensions, except, possibly, a finite number of dimensions. In the framework of this approach, the Adams theorem on the Hopf invariant is studied, for all dimensions with the exception of 15, 31, 63, 127. The new approach is based on the methods of geometric topology.
The purpose of this paper is to describe a general and simple setting for defining $(g,p+q)$-string operations on a Poincaré duality space and more generally on a Gorenstein space. Gorenstein spaces include Poincaré duality spaces as well as classifying spaces or homotopy quotients of connected Lie groups. Our presentation implies directly the homotopy invariance of each $(g,p+q)$-string operation as well as it leads to explicit computations.
Like categories, small 2-categories have well-understood classifying spaces. In this paper, we deal with homotopy types represented by 2-diagrams of 2-categories. Our results extend to homotopy colimits of 2-functors lower categorical analogues that have been classically used in algebraic topology and algebraic K-theory, such as the Homotopy Invariance Theorem (by Bousfield and Kan), the Homotopy Colimit Theorem (Thomason), Theorems A and B (Quillen), or the Homotopy Cofinality Theorem (Hirschhorn).
Let $M$ be a closed, oriented manifold of dimension $d$. Let $LM$ be the space of smooth loops in $M$. Chas and Sullivan recently defined a product on the homology $H_*(LM)$ of degree $-d$. They then investigated other structure that this product induces, including a Batalin -Vilkovisky structure, and a Lie algebra structure on the $S^1$ equivariant homology $H_*^{S^1}(LM)$. These algebraic structures, as well as others, came under the general heading of the "string topology" of $M$. In this paper we will describe a realization of the Chas - Sullivan loop product in terms of a ring spectrum st…
We survey some topics in ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy theory. Our main goal is to highlight the interplay between ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy theory and affine algebraic geometry, focusing on the varieties that are "contractible" from various standpoints.
We compute the homotopy type of the space of proper d-dimensional submanifolds of ${\mathbb R}^n$ with a smooth version of the Fell topology. Our methods allow us to compute the homotopy type of the space of submanifolds with summable labels too, and to give a new proof of the Galatius--Randal-Williams theorem on the homotopy type of their space of submanifolds
We consider the topology for a class of hypersurfaces with highly nonisolated singularites which arise as exceptional orbit varieties of a special class of prehomogeneous vector spaces, which are representations of linear algebraic groups with open orbits. These hypersurface singularities include both determinantal hypersurfaces and linear free (and free*) divisors. Although these hypersurfaces have highly nonisolated singularities, we determine the topology of their Milnor fibers, complements and links. We do so by using the action of linear algebraic groups beginning with the complement, ins…
We show that homotopy pullbacks of sheaves of simplicial sets over a Grothendieck topology distribute over homotopy colimits; this generalizes a result of Puppe about topological spaces. In addition, we show that inverse image functors between categories of simplicial sheaves preserve homotopy pullback squares. The method we use introduces the notion of a sharp map, which is analogous to the notion of a quasi-fibration of spaces, and seems to be of independent interest.
In this paper, we present two types of Lefschetz numbers in the topology of digital images. Namely, the simplicial Lefschetz number $L(f)$ and the cubical Lefschetz number $\bar L(f)$. We show that $L(f)$ is a strong homotopy invariant and has an approximate fixed point theorem. On the other hand, we establish that $\bar L(f)$ is a homotopy invariant and has an $n$-approximate fixed point result. In essence, this means that the fixed point result for $L(f)$ is better than that for $\bar L(f)$ while the homotopy invariance of $\bar L(f)$ is better than that of $L(f)$. Unlike in classical topolo…
Given a principal bundle over a closed manifold, G --> P --> M, let P^{Ad} --> M be the associated adjoint bundle. Gruher and Salvatore showed that the Thom spectrum (P^{Ad})^{-TM} is a ring spectrum whose corresponding product in homology is a Chas-Sullivan type string topology product. We refer to this spectrum as the `string topology spectrum of P", S (P). In the universal case when P is contractible, S(P) is equivalent to LM^{-TM} where LM is the free loop space of the manifold. This ring spectrum was introduced by the authors as a homotopy theoretic realization of the Chas-Sullivan string…
This is an introduction to the study of abstract homotopy theory by means of model categories and $(\infty,1)$-categories. The only prerequisites are very basic general topology and abstract algebra. None categorical background is needed. The final objective is to show that classical homotopy theory for topological spaces can be more naturally understood in terms of categorical language.
