We give a variant of Naef's formula for the failure of invariance of the string topology coproduct under homotopy equivalences, using an obstruction class built from homotopy data associated to a homotopy equivalence as well as the ``fake diagonal''. The vanishing of our obstruction class can be seen as a way to measure a form of boundedness for homotopy equivalences. We show that the same obstruction rules the failure of invariance for a generalization of the coproduct to higher dimensional loops.
Let M be a closed Riemannian manifold. We extend the product of Goresky-Hingston, on the cohomology of the free loop space of M relative to the constant loops, to a nonrelative product. It is graded associative and commutative, and compatible with the length filtration on the loop space, like the original product. We prove the following new geometric property of the dual homology coproduct: the nonvanishing of the k-th iterate of the coproduct on a homology class ensures the existence of a loop with a (k+1)-fold self-intersection in every representative of the class. For spheres and projective…
The free loop space of a Lie group is homeomorphic to the product of the Lie group itself and its based loop space. We show that the coproduct on the homology of the free loop space that was introduced by Goresky and Hingston splits into the diagonal map on the group and a based coproduct on the homology of the based loop space. This result implies that the coproduct is trivial for even-dimensional Lie groups. Using results by Bott and Samelson, we show that the coproduct is trivial as well for a large family of simply connected Lie groups.
This note explores the interaction between cohomology operations in a generalized cohomology theory and a string topology loop coproduct dual to the Chas--Sullivan loop product. More precisely, we ask for a description for the failure of a given operation to commute with the loop coproduct, and will obtain a satisfactory answer in the case where the operation preserves both sums and products. Examples of such operations include the total Steenrod square in ordinary mod 2 cohomology and the Adams operations in K-theory.
We extend the loop product and the loop coproduct to the mapping space from the $k$-dimensional sphere, or more generally from any $k$-manifold, to a $k$-connected space with finite dimensional rational homotopy group, $k\geq 1$. The key to extending the loop coproduct is the fact that the embedding $M\rightarrow M^{S^{k-1}}$ is of "finite codimension" in a sense of Gorenstein spaces. Moreover, we prove the associativity, commutativity, and Frobenius compatibility of them.
Cohen and Godin constructed positive boundary topological quantum field theory (TQFT) structure on the homology of free loop spaces of oriented closed smooth manifolds by associating a certain operations called string operations to orientable surfaces with parametrized boundaries. We show that all TQFT string operations associated to surfaces of genus at least one vanish identically. This is a simple consequence of properties of the loop coproduct which will be discussed in detail. One interesting property is that the loop coproduct is nontrivial only on the degree $d$ homology group of the co…
Let G be a compact Lie group. Let E be a principal G-bundle over a closed manifold M, and Ad(E) its adjoint bundle. In this paper we describe a new Frobenius algebra structure on h_*(Ad(E)), where h_* is an appropriate generalized homology theory. Recall that a Frobenius algebra has both a product and a coproduct. The product in this new Frobenius algebra is induced by the string topology product. In particular, the product can be defined when G is any topological group and in the case that E is contractible it is precisely the Chas-Sullivan string product on H_*(LM). We will show that the cop…
Given a closed manifold $M$. We give an algebraic model for the Chas-Sullivan product and the Goresky-Hingston coproduct. In the simply-connected case, this admits a particularly nice description in terms of a Poincaré duality model of the manifold, and involves the configuration space of two points on $M$. We moreover, construct an $IBL_\infty$-structure on (a model of) cyclic chains on the cochain algebra of $M$, such that the natural comparison map to the $S^1$-equivariant loop space homology intertwines the Lie bialgebra structure on homology. The construction of the coproduct/cobracket de…
In this paper, we investigate the behaviour of the Serre spectral sequence with respect to the algebraic structures of string topology in generalized homology theories, specificially with the Chas-Sullivan product and the corresponding coproduct and module structures. We prove compatibility for two kinds of fibre bundles: the fibre bundle $Ω^n M \to L^n M \to M$ for an $h_*$-oriented manifold $M$ and the looped fibre bundle $L^n F \to L^n E \to L^n B$ of a fibre bunde $F \to E \to B$ of $h_*$-oriented manifolds. Our method lies in the construction of Gysin morphisms of spectral sequences. We a…
We give a homotopy invariant construction of the Reidemeister trace for the coincidence of two maps between closed manifolds of not necessarily the same dimensions. It is realized as a homology class of the homotopy equalizer, which coincides with the Hurewicz image of Koschorke's stabilized bordism invariant. To define it, we use a kind of shriek maps appearing string topology. As an application, we compute the coincidence Reidemeister trace for the self-coincidence of the projections of $S^1$-bundles on $\mathbb{C}P^n$. We also mention how to relate our construction to the string topology op…
Let M be a closed, oriented, n -manifold, and LM its free loop space. Chas and Sullivan defined a commutative algebra structure in the homology of LM, and a Lie algebra structure in its equivariant homology. These structures are known as the string topology loop product and string bracket, respectively. In this paper we prove that these structures are homotopy invariants in the following sense. Let f : M_1 \to M_2 be a homotopy equivalence of closed, oriented n -manifolds. Then the induced equivalence, Lf : LM_1 \to LM_2 induces a ring isomorphism in homology, and an isomorphism of Lie algebra…
Persistent Topology studies topological features of shapes by analyzing the lower level sets of suitable functions, called filtering functions, and encoding the arising information in a parameterized version of the Betti numbers, i.e. the ranks of persistent homology groups. Initially introduced by considering real-valued filtering functions, Persistent Topology has been subsequently generalized to a multidimensional setting, i.e. to the case of $\R^n$-valued filtering functions, leading to studying the ranks of multidimensional homology groups. In particular, a multidimensional matching dista…
Let $M$ be any simply-connected Gorenstein space over any field. Félix and Thomas have extended to simply-connected Gorenstein spaces, the loop (co)products of Chas and Sullivan on the homology of the free loop space $H_*(LM)$. We describe these loop (co)products in terms of the torsion and extension functors by developing string topology in appropriate derived categories. As a consequence, we show that the Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence converging to the loop homology of a Gorenstein space admits a multiplication and a comultiplication with shifted degree which are compatible with the loop…
We elucidate the key role played by formality in the theory of characteristic and resonance varieties. We define relative characteristic and resonance varieties, V_k and R_k, related to twisted group cohomology with coefficients of arbitrary rank. We show that the germs at the origin of V_k and R_k are analytically isomorphic, if the group is 1-formal; in particular, the tangent cone to V_k at 1 equals R_k. These new obstructions to 1-formality lead to a striking rationality property of the usual resonance varieties. A detailed analysis of the irreducible components of the tangent cone at 1 to…
For a closed PL manifold M, we consider the configuration space F(M,k) of ordered k-tuples of distinct points in M. We show that a suitable iterated suspension of F(M,k) is a homotopy invariant of M. The number of suspensions we require depends on three parameters: the number of points k, the dimension of M and the connectivity of M. Our proof uses a mixture of Poincare embedding theory and fiberwise algebraic topology.
We construct an equivalence of $E_{2}$ algebras between two models for the Thom spectrum of the free loop space that are related by derived Koszul duality. To do this, we describe the functoriality and invariance properties of topological Hochschild cohomology.
The purpose of this paper is to describe a general and simple setting for defining $(g,p+q)$-string operations on a Poincaré duality space and more generally on a Gorenstein space. Gorenstein spaces include Poincaré duality spaces as well as classifying spaces or homotopy quotients of connected Lie groups. Our presentation implies directly the homotopy invariance of each $(g,p+q)$-string operation as well as it leads to explicit computations.
We show that the Chas-Sullivan loop product, a combination of the Pontrjagin product on the fiber and intersection product on the base, makes sense on the total space homology of any fiberwise monoid E over a closed oriented manifold M. More generally the Thom spectrum E^{-TM} is a ring spectrum. Similarly a fiberwise module over E defines a module over E^{-TM}. Fiberwise monoids include adjoint bundles of principal bundles, and the construction is natural with respect to maps of principal bundles. This naturality implies homotopy invariance of the algebra structure on H_*(LM) arising from the…
In this paper, we present two types of Lefschetz numbers in the topology of digital images. Namely, the simplicial Lefschetz number $L(f)$ and the cubical Lefschetz number $\bar L(f)$. We show that $L(f)$ is a strong homotopy invariant and has an approximate fixed point theorem. On the other hand, we establish that $\bar L(f)$ is a homotopy invariant and has an $n$-approximate fixed point result. In essence, this means that the fixed point result for $L(f)$ is better than that for $\bar L(f)$ while the homotopy invariance of $\bar L(f)$ is better than that of $L(f)$. Unlike in classical topolo…
