Let G be a compact Lie group. Let E be a principal G-bundle over a closed manifold M, and Ad(E) its adjoint bundle. In this paper we describe a new Frobenius algebra structure on h_*(Ad(E)), where h_* is an appropriate generalized homology theory. Recall that a Frobenius algebra has both a product and a coproduct. The product in this new Frobenius algebra is induced by the string topology product. In particular, the product can be defined when G is any topological group and in the case that E is contractible it is precisely the Chas-Sullivan string product on H_*(LM). We will show that the coproduct is induced by the Freed-Hopkins-Teleman fusion product. Indeed, when M is replaced by BG and h_* is K-theory the coproduct is the completion of the Freed-Hopkins-Teleman fusion structure. We will then show that this duality between the string and fusion products is realized by a Spanier-Whitehead duality between certain Thom spectra of virtual bundles over Ad(E).
We show that the $\mathbb{Z}/2$-equivariant Morava K-theories with reality (as defined by Hu) are self-dual with respect to equivariant Anderson duality. In particular, there is a universal coefficients exact sequence in Morava K-theory with reality. As a particular example, we recover the self-duality of the spectrum $KO$. The study of $\mathbb{Z}/2$-equivariant Anderson duality made in this paper gives a nice interpretation of some symmetries of $RO(\mathbb{Z}/2)$-graded (i.e. bigraded) equivariant cohomology groups in terms of Mackey functor duality.
We make explicit Poincaré duality for the equivariant $K$-theory of equivariant complex projective spaces. The case of the trivial group provides a new approach to the $K$-theory orientation.
Let T be a torus. We show that Koszul duality can be used to compute the equivariant cohomology of topological T-spaces as well as the cohomology of pull backs of the universal T-bundle. The new features are that no further assumptions about the spaces are made and that the coefficient ring may be arbitrary. This gives in particular a Cartan-type model for the equivariant cohomology of a T-space with arbitrary coefficients. Our method works for intersection homology as well.
We prove a Poincare-Alexander-Lefschetz duality theorem for rational torus-equivariant cohomology and rational homology manifolds. We allow non-compact and non-orientable spaces. We use this to deduce certain short exact sequences in equivariant cohomology, originally due to Duflot in the differentiable case, from similar, but more general short exact sequences in equivariant homology. A crucial role is played by the Cohen-Macaulayness of relative equivariant cohomology modules arising from the orbit filtration.
Let G be a topological group such that its homology H(G) with coefficients in a principal ideal domain R is an exterior algebra, generated in odd degrees. We show that the singular cochain functor carries the duality between G-spaces and spaces over BG to the Koszul duality between modules up to homotopy over H(G) and H^*(BG). This gives in particular a Cartan-type model for the equivariant cohomology of a G-space. As another corollary, we obtain a multiplicative quasi-isomorphism C^*(BG) -> H^*(BG). A key step in the proof is to show that a differential Hopf algebra is formal in the category …
Fix a finite group G and an n-dimensional orthogonal G-representation V. We define the equivariant factorization homology of a V-framed smooth G-manifold with coefficients in an $E_V$-algebra using a two-sided bar construction, generalizing [And10, KM18]. This construction uses minimal categorical background and aims for maximal concreteness, allowing convenient proofs of key properties, including invariance of equivariant factorization homology under change of tangential structures. Using a geometrically-seen scanning map, we prove an equivariant version (eNPD) of the nonabelian Poincare dual…
For a compact Lie group G, we use G-equivariant Poincaré duality for ordinary RO(G)-graded homology to define an equivariant intersection product, the dual of the equivariant cup product. Using this, we give a homological construction of the equivariant Lefschetz number and a simple proof of the equivariant Lefschetz fixed point theorem. With similar techniques, an equivariant Fuller index with values in the rationalized Burnside ring is constructed.
The aim of these notes, originally intended as an appendix to a book on the foundations of equivariant cohomology, is to set up the formalism of the $G$-equivariant Poincaré duality for oriented $G$-manifolds, for any connected compact Lie group $G$, following the work of J.-L. Brylinski leading to the spectral sequence $$\mathop{\rm Extgr}\nolimits_{H_G}(H_{G,\rm c} (M),H_G)\Rightarrow H_{G}(M)[d_{M}]\,.$$ The equivariant Gysin functor $(\_)_!:=Ω_{G}(\_)\in\mathcal D^{+}(\mathord{\rm DGM}(H_{G}))$ (resp. $(\_)_{*}:=Ω_{G,\rm c}(\_)$) is then defined in the category of oriented $G$-manifolds an…
Poincare duality lies at the heart of the homological theory of manifolds. In the presence of the action of a group it is well-known that Poincare duality fails in Bredon's ordinary, integer-graded equivariant homology. We give here a detailed account of one way around this problem, which is to extend equivariant ordinary homology to a theory graded on representations of fundamental groupoids. Versions of this theory have appeared previously for actions of finite groups, but this is the first account that works for all compact Lie groups. The first part of this work is a detailed discussion of…
Let G be a general (not necessarily finite dimensional compact) Lie group, let g be its Lie algebra, let Cg be the cone on g in the category of differential graded Lie algebras, and consider the functor which assigns to a chain complex V the V-valued total de Rham complex of G. We describe the G-equivariant de Rham cohomology in terms of a suitable relative differential graded Ext, defined on the appropriate category of (G,Cg)-modules. The meaning of "relative" is made precise via the dual standard construction associated with the monad involving the aforementioned functor and the associated f…
Our main objective is to demonstrate how homological perturbation theory (HPT) results over the last 40 years immediately or with little extra work give some of the Koszul duality results that have appeared in the last decade. Higher homotopies typically arise when a huge object, e. g. a chain complex defining various invariants of a certain geometric situation, is cut to a small model, and the higher homotopies can then be dealt with concisely in the language of sh-structures (strong homotopy structures). This amounts to precise ways of handling the requisite additional structure encapsulatin…
Let X be a "nice" space with an action of a torus T. We consider the Atiyah-Bredon sequence of equivariant cohomology modules arising from the filtration of X by orbit dimension. We show that a front piece of this sequence is exact if and only if the H^*(BT)-module H_T^*(X) is a certain syzygy. Moreover, we express the cohomology of that sequence as an Ext module involving a suitably defined equivariant homology of X. One consequence is that the GKM method for computing equivariant cohomology applies to a Poincare duality space if and only if the equivariant Poincare pairing is perfect.
We give an algebraic description of several modules and algebras related to the vector partition function, and we prove that they can be realized as the equivariant K-theory of some manifolds that have a nice combinatorial description. We also propose a more natural and general notion of duality between these modules, which corresponds to a Poincaré duality-type correspondence for equivariant K-theory.
In this paper, we show the equivalence between two seemingly distinct 2d TQFTs: one comes from the "Coulomb branch index" of the class S theory $T[Σ,G]$ on $L(k,1) \times S^1$, the other is the $^LG$ "equivariant Verlinde formula", or equivalently partition function of $^LG_{\mathbb{C}}$ complex Chern-Simons theory on $Σ\times S^1$. We first derive this equivalence using the M-theory geometry and show that the gauge groups appearing on the two sides are naturally $G$ and its Langlands dual $^LG$. When $G$ is not simply-connected, we provide a recipe of computing the index of $T[Σ,G]$ as summat…
We generalize the first author's construction of intersection spaces to the case of stratified pseudomanifolds of stratification depth 1 with twisted link bundles, assuming that each link possesses an equivariant Moore approximation for a suitable choice of structure group. As a by-product, we find new characteristic classes for fiber bundles admitting such approximations. For trivial bundles and flat bundles whose base has finite fundamental group these classes vanish. For oriented closed pseudomanifolds, we prove that the reduced rational cohomology of the intersection spaces satisfies globa…
The framed n-discs operad fD_n is studied as semidirect product of SO(n) and the little n-discs operad. Our equivariant recognition principle says that a grouplike space acted on by fD_n is equivalent to the n-fold loop space on a SO(n)-space. Examples of fD_2-spaces are nerves of ribbon braided monoidal categories. We compute the rational homology of fD_n. Koszul duality for semidirect product operads of chain complexes is defined and applied to compute the double loop space homology as BV-algebra.
The present article studies decompositions of vector bundles on the moduli stack of elliptic curves that are pushforwards of vector bundles on moduli of elliptic curves with level structure. These imply decomposition results for rings of modular forms and also for topological modular forms. We give explicit formulas for these decompositions and also apply them to equivariant topological modular forms. Moreover, we study the dualizing sheaf on $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_1(n)$ and characterize the numbers $n$ such that $Tmf_1(n)$ is Anderson self-dual.
