There is an ``algebraisation'' of the notion of weak factorisation system (w.f.s.) known as a natural weak factorisation system. In it, the two classes of maps of a w.f.s. are replaced by two categories of maps-with-structure, where the extra structure on a map now encodes a choice of liftings with respect to the other class. This extra structure has pleasant consequences: for example, a natural w.f.s. on C induces a canonical natural w.f.s. structure on any functor category [A, C].
In this paper, we define cofibrantly generated natural weak factorisation systems by analogy with cofibrantly generated w.f.s.'s. We then construct them by a method which is reminiscent of Quillen's small object argument but produces factorisations which are much smaller and easier to handle, and show that the resultant natural w.f.s. is, in a suitable sense, freely generated by its generating cofibrations. Finally, we show that the two categories of maps-with-structure for a natural w.f.s. are closed under all the constructions we would expect of them: (co)limits, pushouts / pullbacks, transfinite composition, and so on.
The present note has three aims. First, to complement the theory of cofibrant generation of algebraic weak factorisation systems (AWFSs) to cover some important examples that are not locally presentable categories. Secondly, to prove that cofibrantly KZ-generated AWFSs (a notion we define) are always lax orthogonal. Thirdly, to show that the two known methods of building lax orthogonal AWFSs, namely cofibrantly KZ-generation and the method of "simple adjunctions", construct different AWFSs. We study in some detail the example of cofibrant KZ-generation that yields representable multicategories…
Algebraic weak factorisation systems (AWFS) refine weak factorisation systems by requiring that the assignations sending a map to its first and second factors should underlie an interacting comonad--monad pair on the arrow category. We provide a comprehensive treatment of the basic theory of AWFS---drawing on work of previous authors---and complete the theory with two main new results. The first provides a characterisation of AWFS and their morphisms in terms of their double categories of left or right maps. The second concerns a notion of cofibrant generation of an AWFS by a small double cate…
We explain how any cofibrantly generated weak factorisation system on a category may be equipped with a universally and canonically determined choice of cofibrant replacement. We then apply this to the theory of weak omega-categories, showing that the universal and canonical cofibrant replacement of the operad for strict omega-categories is precisely Leinster's operad for weak omega-categories.
The paper studies the problem of the cofibrant generation of a model category. We prove that, assuming Vopěnka's principle, every cofibrantly generated model category is Quillen equivalent to a combinatorial model category. We discuss cases where this result implies that the class of weak equivalences in a cofibrantly generated model category is accessibly embedded. We also prove a necessary condition for a model category to be cofibrantly generated by a set of generating cofibrations between cofibrant objects.
We define a new notion of an algebraic model structure, in which the cofibrations and fibrations are retracts of coalgebras for comonads and algebras for monads, and prove "algebraic" analogs of classical results. Using a modified version of Quillen's small object argument, we show that every cofibrantly generated model structure in the usual sense underlies a cofibrantly generated algebraic model structure. We show how to pass a cofibrantly generated algebraic model structure across an adjunction, and we characterize the algebraic Quillen adjunction that results. We prove that pointwise natur…
We show that weak equivalences in a (cofibrantly generated) left Bousfield localization of the projective model category of simplicial presheaves can be characterized by a local lifting property if and only if the localization is exact.
We investigate the categories of weak maps associated to an algebraic weak factorisation system (AWFS) in the sense of Grandis-Tholen. For any AWFS on a category with an initial object, cofibrant replacement forms a comonad, and the category of (left) weak maps associated to the AWFS is by definition the Kleisli category of this comonad. We exhibit categories of weak maps as a kind of "homotopy category", that freely adjoins a section for every "acyclic fibration" (=right map) of the AWFS; and using this characterisation, we give an alternate description of categories of weak maps in terms of …
This paper introduces lax orthogonal algebraic weak factorisation systems on 2-categories and describes a method of constructing them. This method rests in the notion of simple 2-monad, that is a generalisation of the simple reflections studied by Cassidy, Hébert and Kelly. Each simple 2-monad on a finitely complete 2-category gives rise to a lax orthogonal algebraic weak factorisation system, and an example of a simple 2-monad is given by completion under a class of colimits. The notions of KZ lifting operation, lax natural lifting operation and lax orthogonality between morphisms are studied…
We study locally presentable categories equipped with a cofibrantly generated weak factorization system. Our main result is that these categories are closed under 2-limits, in particular under pseudopullbacks. We give applications to deconstructible classes in Grothendieck categories. We discuss pseudopullbacks of combinatorial model categories.
In this paper, we show that the Thomason model structure restricts to a Quillen equivalent cofibrantly generated model structure on the category of acyclic categories, whose generating cofibrations are the same as those generating the Thomason model structure. To understand the Thomason model structure, we need to have a closer look at the (barycentric) subdivision endofunctor on the category of simplicial sets. This functor has a well known right adjoint, called Kan's Ex functor. Taking the subdivision twice and then the fundamental category yields a left adjoint of an adjunction between the …
We describe an equivalent formulation of algebraic weak factorisation systems, not involving monads and comonads, but involving double categories of morphisms equipped with a lifting operation satisfying lifting and factorisation axioms.
In this work we discuss a new type of factorisation systems for \textbf{Ord}-enriched categories. We start by defining the new notion of lax weak orthogonality, which involves the existence of lax diagonal morphisms for lax squares. Using the usual theory of factorisation systems as a blueprint, we introduce a lax version of weak and functorial factorisation systems. We provide a characterisation of lax functorial weak factorisation systems, namely lax weak factorisation systems such that their factorisations are lax functorial. Then, we present a particular case of such lax functorial weak fa…
In this paper we put a cofibrantly generated model category structure on the category of small simplicial categories. The weak equivalences are a simplicial analogue of the notion of equivalence of categories.
We show that the classifying category C(T) of a dependent type theory T with axioms for identity types admits a non-trivial weak factorisation system. We provide an explicit characterisation of the elements of both the left class and the right class of the weak factorisation system. This characterisation is applied to relate identity types and the homotopy theory of groupoids.
We introduce type-theoretic algebraic weak factorisation systems and show how they give rise to homotopy-theoretic models of Martin-Löf type theory. This is done by showing that the comprehension category associated to a type-theoretic algebraic weak factorisation system satisfies the assumptions necessary to apply a right adjoint method for splitting comprehension categories. We then provide methods for constructing several examples of type-theoretic algebraic weak factorisation systems, encompassing the existing groupoid model and cubical sets models, as well as some models based on normal f…
We prove, without set theoretic assumptions, that every locally presentable category C endowed with a tractable cofibrantly generated class of cofibrations has a unique minimal (or left induced) Quillen model structure. More generally, for any set S of arrows in C we construct the minimal model structure on C with the prescribed cofibrations and making all the arrows of S weak equivalences. We describe its class of equivalences as the "smallest Cisinski localizer containing S". Our proof rely on a careful use of the fat small object argument and J.~Lurie's "good colimits" technology and on the…
We construct a cofibrantly generated Quillen model structure on the category of small n-fold categories and prove that it is Quillen equivalent to the standard model structure on the category of simplicial sets. An n-fold functor is a weak equivalence if and only if the diagonal of its n-fold nerve is a weak equivalence of simplicial sets. This is an n-fold analogue to Thomason's Quillen model structure on Cat. We introduce an n-fold Grothendieck construction for multisimplicial sets, and prove that it is a homotopy inverse to the n-fold nerve. As a consequence, we completely prove that the un…
The small object argument is a transfinite construction which, starting from a set of maps in a category, generates a weak factorisation system on that category. As useful as it is, the small object argument has some problematic aspects: it possesses no universal property; it does not converge; and it does not seem to be related to other transfinite constructions occurring in categorical algebra. In this paper, we give an "algebraic" refinement of the small object argument, cast in terms of Grandis and Tholen's natural weak factorisation systems, which rectifies each of these three deficiencie…
Combinatorial model categories were introduced by J. H. Smith as model categories which are locally presentable and cofibrantly generated. He has not published his results yet but proofs of some of them were presented by T. Beke or D. Dugger. We are contributing to this endeavour by proving that weak equivalences in a combinatorial model category form an accessible category. We also present some new results about weak equivalences and cofibrations in combinatorial model categories.
Consider a cofibrantly generated model category $S$, a small category $C$ and a subcategory $D$ of $C$. We endow the category $S^C$ of functors from $C$ to $S$ with a model structure, defining weak equivalences and fibrations objectwise but only on $D$. Our first concern is the effect of moving $C$, $D$ and $S$. The main notion introduced here is the ``$D$-codescent'' property for objects in $S^C$. Our long-term program aims at reformulating as codescent statements the Conjectures of Baum-Connes and Farrell-Jones, and at tackling them with new methods. Here, we set the grounds of a systematic …
In this article we extend the theory of lax monoidal structures, also known as multitensors, and the monads on categories of enriched graphs that they give rise to. Our first principal result -- the lifting theorem for multitensors -- enables us to see the Gray tensor product of 2-categories and the Crans tensor product of Gray categories as part of this framework. We define weak n-categories with strict units by means of a notion of reduced higher operad, using the theory of algebraic weak factorisation systems. Our second principal result is to establish a lax tensor product on the category …
We produce a cofibrantly generated simplicial symmetric monoidal model structure for the category of (small unital) C*-categories, whose weak equivalences are the unitary equivalences. The closed monoidal structure consists of the maximal tensor product, which generalizes that of C*-algebras, with the Ghez-Lima-Roberts C*-categories of *-functors, C*(A,B), providing the internal Hom's.
In this paper, we study weakly unital dg categories as they were defined by Kontsevich and Soibelman [KS, Sect.4]. We construct a cofibrantly generated Quillen model structure on the category $\mathrm{Cat}_{\mathrm{dgwu}}(\Bbbk)$ of small weakly unital dg categories over a field $\Bbbk$. Our model structure can be thought of as an extension of the model structure on the category $\mathrm{Cat}_{\mathrm{dg}}(\Bbbk)$ of (strictly unital) small dg categories over $\Bbbk$, due to Tabuada [Tab]. More precisely, we show that the imbedding of $\mathrm{Cat}_{\mathrm{dg}}(\Bbbk)$ to $\mathrm{Cat}_{\math…
In this paper, which is subsequent to our previous paper [PS] (but can be read independently from it), we continue our study of the closed model structure on the category $\mathrm{Cat}_{\mathrm{dgwu}}(\Bbbk)$ of small weakly unital dg categories (in the sense of Kontsevich-Soibelman [KS]) over a field $\Bbbk$. In [PS], we constructed a closed model structure on the category of weakly unital dg categories, imposing a technical condition on the weakly unital dg categories, saying that $\mathrm{id}_x\cdot \mathrm{id}_x=\mathrm{id}_x$ for any object $x$. Although this condition led us to a great s…
In this paper we construct new categorical models for the identity types of Martin-Löf type theory, in the categories Top of topological spaces and SSet of simplicial sets. We do so building on earlier work of Awodey and Warren, which has suggested that a suitable environment for the interpretation of identity types should be a category equipped with a weak factorisation system in the sense of Bousfield--Quillen. It turns out that this is not quite enough for a sound model, due to some subtle coherence issues concerned with stability under substitution; and so our first task is to introduce a …
The first part of this dissertation defines "dependently typed algebraic theories", which are a strict subclass of the generalised algebraic theories (GATs) of Cartmell. We characterise dependently typed algebraic theories as finitary monads on certain presheaf categories, generalising a well-known result due to Lawvere, Bénabou and Linton for ordinary multisorted algebraic theories. We use this to recognise dependently typed algebraic theories for a number of classes of algebraic structures, such as small categories, n-categories, strict and weak omega-categories, planar coloured operads and …
