We define Anderson-Brown-Cisinski (ABC) cofibration categories, and construct homotopy colimits of diagrams of objects in ABC cofibration categories. Homotopy colimits for Quillen model categories are obtained as a particular case. We attach to each ABC cofibration category a left Heller derivator. A dual theory is developed for homotopy limits in ABC fibration categories and for right Heller derivators. These constructions provide a natural framework for 'doing homotopy theory' in ABC (co)fibration categories.
We prove that the homotopy prederivator of a cofibration category is equivalent to the homotopy prederivator of its associated quasi-category of frames, as introduced by Szumiło. We use this comparison result to deduce various abstract properties of the obtained prederivators.
For every $\infty$-category $\mathscr{C}$, there is a homotopy $n$-category $\mathrm{h}_n \mathscr{C}$ and a canonical functor $γ_n \colon \mathscr{C} \to \mathrm{h}_n \mathscr{C}$. We study these higher homotopy categories, especially in connection with the existence and preservation of (co)limits, by introducing a higher categorical notion of weak colimit. Using homotopy $n$-categories, we introduce the notion of an $n$-derivator and study the main examples arising from $\infty$-categories. Following the work of Maltsiniotis and Garkusha, we define $K$-theory for $\infty$-derivators and prov…
The theory of derivators provides a convenient abstract setting for computing with homotopy limits and colimits. In enriched homotopy theory, the analogues of homotopy (co)limits are weighted homotopy (co)limits. In this thesis, we develop a theory of derivators and, more generally, prederivators enriched over a monoidal derivator E. In parallel to the unenriched case, these E-prederivators provide a framework for studying the constructions of enriched homotopy theory, in particular weighted homotopy (co)limits. As a precursor to E-(pre)derivators, we study E-categories, which are categories e…
We show first that derivators can be seen as models of a suitable homotopy limit 2-sketch. After discussing homotopy local $λ$-presentability of the 2-category of derivators, for some appropriate regular cardinal $λ$, as an application we prove that derivators of small presentation are homotopy $λ$-presentable objects.
Using the formalism of Grothendieck's derivators, we construct `the universal localizing invariant of dg categories'. By this, we mean a morphism U_l from the pointed derivator associated with the Morita homotopy theory of dg categories to a triangulated strong derivator M^loc such that U_l commutes with filtered homotopy colimits, preserves the point, sends each exact sequence of dg categories to a triangle and is universal for these properties. Similary, we construct the `the universal additive invariant of dg categories', i.e. the universal morphism of derivators U_a to a strong triangulate…
Without the axiom of choice, the free exact completion of the category of sets (i.e. the category of setoids) may not be complete or cocomplete. We will show that nevertheless, it can be enhanced to a derivator: the formal structure of categories of diagrams related by Kan extension functors. Moreover, this derivator is the free cocompletion of a point in a class of "1-truncated derivators" (which behave like a 1-category rather than a higher category). In classical mathematics, the free cocompletion of a point relative to all derivators is the homotopy theory of spaces. Thus, if there is a ho…
A variant of the trace in a monoidal category is given in the setting of closed monoidal derivators, which is applicable to endomorphisms of fiberwise dualizable objects. Functoriality of this trace is established. As an application, an explicit formula for the trace of the homotopy colimit of endomorphisms over finite EI-categories is deduced. This result can be seen as a generalization of the additivity of traces in monoidal categories with a compatible triangulation.
We revisit and improve Alex Heller's results on the stabilization of derivators in Stable Homotopy Theories and Stabilization (J Pure Appl Algebra, 115(2):113-130, 1997), recovering his results entirely. Along the way we give some details of the localization theory of derivators and prove some new results in that vein.
We show that a derivator is stable if and only if homotopy finite limits and homotopy finite colimits commute, if and only if homotopy finite limit functors have right adjoints, and if and only if homotopy finite colimit functors have left adjoints. These characterizations generalize to an abstract notion of "stability relative to a class of functors", which includes in particular pointedness, semiadditivity, and ordinary stability. To prove them, we develop the theory of derivators enriched over monoidal left derivators and weighted homotopy limits and colimits therein.
We show that the categories PsTop and Lim of pseudotopological spaces and limit spaces, respectively, admit cofibration category structures, and that PsTop admits a model category structure, giving several ways to simultaneously study the homotopy theory of classical topological spaces, combinatorial spaces such as graphs and matroids, and metric spaces endowed with a privileged scale, in addition to spaces of maps between them. In the process, we give a sufficient condition for a topological construct which contains compactly generated Hausdorff spaces as a subcategory to admit an $I$-categor…
In this paper we establish new characterizations of stable derivators, thereby obtaining additional interpretations of the passage from (pointed) topological spaces to spectra and, more generally, of the stabilization. We show that a derivator is stable if and only if homotopy finite limits and homotopy finite colimits commute, and there are variants for sufficiently finite Kan extensions. As an additional reformulation, a derivator is stable if and only if it admits a zero object and if partial cone and partial fiber morphisms commute on squares.
We characterize the Hurewicz cofibrations between finite topological spaces, that is, the continuous functions between finite topological spaces that have the homotopy extension property with respect to all topological spaces. In particular, we show that cofibrations between connected non-empty finite topological spaces are homotopy equivalences. As a consequence of our characterization, we obtain a simple algorithm capable of determining whether a given continuous function between finite topological spaces is a cofibration.
Cofibration categories are a formalization of homotopy theory useful for dealing with homotopy colimits that exist on the level of models as colimits of cofibrant diagrams. In this paper, we deal with their enriched version. Our main result claims that the category $[\mathcal{C},\mathcal{M}]$ of enriched diagrams equipped with the projective structure inherits a structure of a cofibration category whenever $\mathcal{C}$ is locally cofibrant (or, more generally, locally flat).
We show that stable derivators, like stable model categories, admit Mayer-Vietoris sequences arising from cocartesian squares. Along the way we characterize homotopy exact squares, and give a detection result for colimiting diagrams in derivators. As an application, we show that a derivator is stable if and only if its suspension functor is an equivalence.
Algebraic topological methods have been used successfully in concurrency theory, the domain of theoretical computer science that deals with distributed computing. L. Fajstrup, E. Goubault, and M. Raussen have introduced partially ordered spaces (pospaces) as a model for concurrent systems. In this paper it is shown that the category of pospaces under a fixed pospace is both a fibration and a cofibration category in the sense of H. Baues. The homotopy notion in this fibration and cofibration category is relative directed homotopy. It is also shown that the category of pospaces is a closed model…

We answer the question to what extent homotopy (co)limits in categories with weak equivalences allow for a Fubini-type interchange law. The main obstacle is that we do not assume our categories with weak equivalences to come equipped with a calculus for homotopy (co)limits, such as a derivator.
For a given group $G$ and a collection of subgroups $\mathcal F$ of $G$, we show that there exist a left induced model structure on the category of right $G$-simplicial sets, in which the weak equivalences and cofibrations are the maps that induce weak equivalences and cofibrations on the $H$-orbits for all $H$ in $\mathcal F$. This gives a model categorical criterion for maps that induce weak equivalences on $H$-orbits to be weak equivalences in the $\mathcal F$-model structure.
We prove that the homotopy theory of cofibration categories is equivalent to the homotopy theory of cocomplete quasicategories. This is achieved by presenting both homotopy theories as fibration categories and constructing an explicit equivalence between them.
We give an explicit way of calculating the set of homotopy classes of morphisms from a Tamsamani n-category A to another one B. This calculation uses a Reedy-cofibrant cosimplicial resolution of A, using a new notion of ``free cofibration'' of n-precats. The free cofibrations of n-precats seem to be the analogue for n-categories of the Bousfield-Kan cofibrations in the theory of diagrams.
In this paper we explain certain systematic differences between algebraic and topological triangulated categories. A triangulated category is algebraic if it admits a differential graded model, and topological if it admits a model in the form of a stable cofibration category. The precise statements use the 'n-order' of a triangulated category, for a natural number n. The n-order is a non-negative integer (or infinity) and measures `how strongly' n annihilates objects of the form Y/n. We show the following results: the n-order of an algebraic triangulated category is infinite; for every prime p…
We study locally constant coefficients. We first study the theory of homotopy Kan extensions with locally constant coefficients in model categories, and explain how it characterizes the homotopy theory of small categories. We explain how to interpret this in terms of left Bousfield localization of categories of diagrams with values in a combinatorial model category. At last, we explain how the theory of homotopy Kan extensions in derivators can be used to understand locally constant functors.
This book is an account of certain topics in general and algebraic topology. Instead of laying out a synopsis of each chapter, here is a sample of some of what is taken up: 1) Nilpotency and its role in homotopy theory. 2) Bousfield's theory of the localization of spaces and spectra. 3) Homotopy limits and colimits and their applications. 4) The James construction, symmetric products, and the Dold$-$Thom theorem. 5) Brown and Adams representability in the setting of triangulated categories 6) Operads and the May$-$Thomason theorem on the uniqueness of infinite loop space machines. 7) The plus …
This paper constructs an h-model structure for diagrams of streams, locally preordered spaces. Along the way, the paper extends some classical characterizations of Hurewicz fibrations and closed Hurewicz cofibrations. The usual characterization of classical closed Hurewicz cofibrations as inclusions of neighborhood deformation retracts extends. A characterization of classical Hurewicz fibrations as algebras over a pointed Moore cocylinder endofunctor also extends. An immediate consequence is a long exact sequence for directed homotopy monoids, with applications to safety verifications for data…
There are infinitely many variants of the notion of Kan fibration that, together with suitable choices of cofibrations and the usual notion of weak equivalence of simplicial sets, satisfy Quillen's axioms for a homotopy model category. The combinatorics underlying these fibrations is purely finitary and seems interesting both for its own sake and for its interaction with homotopy types. To show that these notions of fibration are indeed distinct, one needs to understand how iterates of Kan's Ex functor act on graphs and on nerves of small categories.
We show that in any symmetric monoidal category, if a weight for colimits is absolute, then the resulting colimit of any diagram of dualizable objects is again dualizable. Moreover, in this case, if an endomorphism of the colimit is induced by an endomorphism of the diagram, then its trace can be calculated as a linear combination of traces on the objects in the diagram. The formal nature of this result makes it easy to generalize to traces in homotopical contexts (using derivators) and traces in bicategories. These generalizations include the familiar additivity of the Euler characteristic an…
