Maximally supersymmetric gauge theory in four dimensions admits local boundary conditions which preserve half of the bulk supersymmetries. The S-duality of the bulk gauge theory can be extended in a natural fashion to act on such half-BPS boundary conditions. The purpose of this note is to explain the role these boundary conditions can play in the Geometric Langlands program. In particular, we describe how to obtain pairs of Geometric Langland dual objects from S-dual pairs of half-BPS boundary conditions.
We prove duality isomorphisms of certain representations of W-algebras which play an essential role in the quantum geometric Langlands Program and some related results.
We show how SU(2) $N_f=4$ Seiberg-Witten prepotentials are derived form $\hat{\mathfrak{sl}}_{2,k}$ ($k\to2$) four-point conformal blocks via considering Langlands duality.
Geometric Langlands duality is usually formulated as a statement about Riemann surfaces, but it can be naturally understood as a consequence of electric-magnetic duality of four-dimensional gauge theory. This duality in turn is naturally understood as a consequence of the existence of a certain exotic supersymmetric conformal field theory in six dimensions. The same six-dimensional theory also gives a useful framework for understanding some recent mathematical results involving a counterpart of geometric Langlands duality for complex surfaces. (This article is based on a lecture at the Raoul B…
A special case of the geometric Langlands correspondence is given by the relationship between solutions of the Bethe ansatz equations for the Gaudin model and opers - connections on the projective line with extra structure. In this paper, we describe a deformation of this correspondence for $SL(N)$. We introduce a difference equation version of opers called $q$-opers and prove a $q$-Langlands correspondence between nondegenerate solutions of the Bethe ansatz equations for the XXZ model and nondegenerate twisted $q$-opers with regular singularities on the projective line. We show that the quant…
We describe a correspondence (or duality) between the q-characters of finite-dimensional representations of a quantum affine algebra and its Langlands dual in the spirit of q-alg/9708006 and 0809.4453. We prove this duality for the Kirillov-Reshetikhin modules and their irreducible tensor products. In the course of the proof we introduce and construct "interpolating (q,t)-characters" depending on two parameters which interpolate between the q-characters of a quantum affine algebra and its Langlands dual.
We review the approach to the geometric Langlands program for algebraic curves via S-duality of an N=4 supersymmetric four dimensional gauge theory, initiated by Kapustin and Witten in 2006. We sketch some of the central further developments. Placing this four dimensional gauge theory into a six dimensional framework, as advocated by Witten, holds the promise to lead to a formulation which makes geometric Langlands duality a manifest symmetry (like coavariance in differential geometry). Furthermore, it leads to an approach toward geometric Langlands duality for algebraic surfaces, reproducing …
The Langlands Program was launched in the late 60s with the goal of relating Galois representations and automorphic forms. In recent years a geometric version has been developed which leads to a mysterious duality between certain categories of sheaves on moduli spaces of (flat) bundles on algebraic curves. Three years ago, in a groundbreaking advance, Kapustin and Witten have linked the geometric Langlands correspondence to the S-duality of 4D supersymmetric gauge theories. This and subsequent works have already led to striking new insights into the geometric Langlands Program, which in partic…
We show that there is a dual description of conformal blocks of $d=2$ rational CFT in terms of Hecke eigenfields and eigensheaves. In particular, partition functions, conformal characters and lattice theta functions may be reconstructed from the action of Hecke operators. This method can be applied to: 1) rings of integers of Galois number fields equipped with the trace (or anti-trace) form; 2) root lattices of affine Kac-Moody algebras and WZW-models; 3) minimal models of Belavin-Polyakov-Zamolodchikov and related $d=2$ spin-chain/lattice models; 4) vertex algebras of Leech and Niemeier latti…
We show that the Hitchin integrable system for a simple complex Lie group $G$ is dual to the Hitchin system for the Langlands dual group $\lan{G}$. In particular, the general fiber of the connected component $\Higgs_0$ of the Hitchin system for $G$ is an abelian variety which is dual to the corresponding fiber of the connected component of the Hitchin system for $\lan{G}$. The non-neutral connected components $\Higgs_α$ form torsors over $\Higgs_0$. We show that their duals are gerbes over $\Higgs_0$ which are induced by the gerbe of $G$-Higgs bundles $\gHiggs$. More generally, we establish a …

A recent attempt to extend the geometric Langlands duality to affine Kac-Moody groups, has led Braverman and Finkelberg [arXiv:0711.2083] to conjecture a mathematical relation between the intersection cohomology of the moduli space of G-bundles on certain singular complex surfaces, and the integrable representations of the Langlands dual of an associated affine G-algebra, where G is any simply-connected semisimple group. For the A-type groups, where the conjecture has been mathematically verified to a large extent, we show that the relation has a natural physical interpretation in terms of six…
We discuss the relation between Liouville theory and the Hitchin integrable system, which can be seen in two ways as a two step process involving quantization and hyperkaehler rotation. The modular duality of Liouville theory and the relation between Liouville theory and the SL(2)-WZNW-model give a new perspective on the geometric Langlands correspondence and on its relation to conformal field theory.
We study surface and line operators in the GL-twisted N=4 gauge theory in four dimensions. Their properties depend on the parameter t which determines the BRST operator of theory. For t=i we propose a complete description of the 2-category of surface operators in terms of module categories. We also determine the monoidal category of line operators which includes Wilson lines as special objects. For t=1 and t=0 we only discuss surface and line operators in the abelian case. Applications to the categorification of the local geometric Langlands duality and its quantum version are briefly describe…
We review and extend the vertex algebra framework linking gauge theory constructions and a quantum deformation of the Geometric Langlands Program. The relevant vertex algebras are associated to junctions of two boundary conditions in a 4d gauge theory and can be constructed from the basic ones by following certain standard procedures. Conformal blocks of modules over these vertex algebras give rise to twisted D-modules on the moduli stacks of G-bundles on Riemann surfaces which have applications to the Langlands Program. In particular, we construct a series of vertex algebras for every simple …
We consider the problem of quantization of classical soliton integrable systems, such as the KdV hierarchy, in the framework of a general formalism of Gaudin models associated to affine Kac--Moody algebras. Our experience with the Gaudin models associated to finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras suggests that the common eigenvalues of the mutually commuting quantum Hamiltonians in a model associated to an affine algebra should be encoded by affine opers associated to the Langlands dual affine algebra. This leads us to some concrete predictions for the spectra of the quantum Hamiltonians of th…
In Part I, we extend our analysis in [arXiv:0807.1107], and show that a mathematically conjectured geometric Langlands duality for complex surfaces in [1], and its generalizations -- which relate some cohomology of the moduli space of certain ("ramified") G-instantons to the integrable representations of the Langlands dual of certain affine (sub) G-algebras, where G is any compact Lie group -- can be derived, purely physically, from the principle that the spacetime BPS spectra of string-dual M-theory compactifications ought to be equivalent. In Part II, to the setup in Part I, we introduce Ome…
We prove a system of relations in the Grothendieck ring of the category O of representations of the Borel subalgebra of an untwisted quantum affine algebra U_q(g^) introduced in [HJ]. This system was discovered in [MRV1, MRV2], where it was shown that solutions of this system can be attached to certain affine opers for the Langlands dual affine Kac-Moody algebra of g^, introduced in [FF5]. Together with the results of [BLZ3, BHK], which enable one to associate quantum g^-KdV Hamiltonians to representations from the category O, this provides strong evidence for the conjecture of [FF5] linking t…
We provide an explicit proof of a recent result of Gaiotto arXiv:2110.02255 which gives an explicit formula for a so-called "multiplication kernel'' $K_3(x, y, z; t)$ intertwining the action of Hecke operators and Gaudin operators in three sets of variables. This function $K_3$ arises naturally in the context of the analytic formulation of the geometric Langlands program in the genus-zero case arXiv:1908.09677, arXiv:2103.01509, arXiv:2106.05243. We also discuss how the kernel $K_3$ relates to other objects typically considered in the analytic Langlands program.
Topological-Holomorphic ${\mathcal N} =4$ Gauge Theory: From Langlands Duality of Holomorphic Invariants to Mirror Symmetry of Quasi-topological Strings
We further explore the implications of our framework in [arXiv:1301.1977, arXiv:1309.4775], and physically derive, from the principle that the spacetime BPS spectra of string-dual M-theory compactifications ought to be equivalent, (i) a 5d AGT correspondence for any compact Lie group, (ii) a 5d and 6d AGT correspondence on ALE space of type ADE, and (iii) identities between the ordinary, q-deformed and elliptic affine W-algebras associated with the 4d, 5d and 6d AGT correspondence, respectively, which also define a quantum geometric Langlands duality and its higher analogs formulated by Feigin…
We argue that a special step in the chain of dualities used in [Tan 2008] implicitly suggests to view Langlands duality as being fundamentally rooted in an eight-dimensional theory on the F-theory 7- brane. We give further arguments why such an eight-dimensional per- spective might be of interest.
Geometric Langlands duality relates a representation of a simple Lie group $G^\vee$ to the cohomology of a certain moduli space associated with the dual group $G$. In this correspondence, a principal $SL_2$ subgroup of $G^\vee$ makes an unexpected appearance. Why this happens can be explained using gauge theory, as we will see in this article, with the help of the equations of Nahm and Bogomolny. (Based on a lecture at Geometry and Physics: Atiyah 80, Edinburgh, April 2009.)
The geometric Langlands correspondence was described some years ago in terms of $S$-duality of $\N=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. Some additional matters relevant to this story are described here. The main goal is to explain directly why an $A$-brane of a certain simple kind can be an eigenbrane for the action of 't Hooft operators. To set the stage, we review some facts about Higgs bundles and the Hitchin fibration. We consider only the simplest examples, in which many technical questions can be avoided.
We present a gauge-theoretic interpretation of the "analytic" version of the geometric Langlands program, in which Hitchin Hamiltonians and Hecke operators are viewed as concrete operators acting on a Hilbert space of quantum states. The gauge theory ingredients required to understand this construction -- such as electric-magnetic duality between Wilson and 't Hooft line operators in four-dimensional gauge theory -- are the same ones that enter in understanding via gauge theory the more familiar formulation of geometric Langlands, but now these ingredients are organized and applied in a novel …
We explain how, starting with a stack of D4-branes ending on an NS5-brane in type IIA string theory, one can, via T-duality and the topological-holomorphic nature of the relevant worldvolume theories, relate (i) the lattice models realized by Costello's 4d Chern-Simons theory, (ii) links in 3d analytically-continued Chern-Simons theory, (iii) the quantum geometric Langlands correspondence realized by Kapustin-Witten using 4d N = 4 gauge theory and its quantum group modification, and (iv) the Gaitsgory-Lurie conjecture relating quantum groups/affine Kac-Moody algebras to Whittaker D-modules/W-a…
We construct and study a closed, two-dimensional, quasi-topological (0,2) gauged sigma model with target space a smooth G-manifold, where G is any compact and connected Lie group. When the target space is a flag manifold of simple G, and the gauge group is a Cartan subgroup thereof, the perturbative model describes, purely physically, the recently formulated mathematical theory of "Twisted Chiral Differential Operators". This paves the way, via a generalized T-duality, for a natural physical interpretation of the geometric Langlands correspondence for simply-connected, simple, complex Lie grou…
This paper explores further the connection between Langlands duality and T-duality for compact simple Lie groups, which appeared in work of Daenzer-Van Erp and Bunke-Nikolaus. We show that Langlands duality gives rise to isomorphisms of twisted K-groups, but that these K-groups are trivial except in the simplest case of SU(2) and SO(3). Along the way we compute explicitly the map on $H^3$ induced by a covering of compact simple Lie groups, which is either 1 or 2 depending in a complicated way on the type of the groups involved. We also give a new method for computing twisted K-theory using the…
We study a duality of 5d maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills on S^1, which exchanges the tower of Kaluza-Klein W-bosons and the tower of instantonic monopoles. This duality maps a non-simply-laced gauge theory to a simply-laced gauge theory twisted by an outer automorphism around S^1, and is closely related to the Langlands dual of affine Lie algebras. We also discuss how this S-duality is implemented in terms of 6d N=(2,0) theory. This is straightforward except for the 6d theory of type SU(2n+1) with Z_2 outer-automorphism twist, for which a few new properties are deduced. For example, this 6…
Over the past few years the arithmetic Langlands program has found applications in two quite different problems that arise in string physics. The first of these is concerned with the fundamental problem of deriving the geometry of spacetime from the worldsheet dynamics, leading to a realization of the notion of an emergent spacetime in string theory. The second problem is concerned with the idea of using automorphic black holes as probes of spacetime. In this article both of these applications of the Langlands program are described.
