We dig out a deeper mathematical structure of the quantum Hall system from a perspective of the Langlands program. An algebraic expression of the Hamiltonian with the quantum group is a cornerstone. The Langlands duality of the quantum group sheds light on the fractal structure of Hofstadter's butterfly. This would imply a "quantum Langlands duality".
The Hofstadter butterfly is viewed as a quantum phase diagram with infinitely many phases, labelled by their (integer) Hall conductance, and a fractal structure. We describe various properties of this phase diagram: We establish Gibbs phase rules; count the number of components of each phase, and characterize the set of multiple phase coexistence.
We point out that the recent conjectural solution to the spectral problem for the Hamiltonian $H=e^{x}+e^{-x}+e^{p}+e^{-p}$ in terms of the refined topological invariants of a local Calabi-Yau geometry has an intimate relation with two-dimensional non-interacting electrons moving in a periodic potential under a uniform magnetic field. In particular, we find that the quantum A-period, determining the relation between the energy eigenvalue and the Kahler modulus of the Calabi-Yau, can be found explicitly when the quantum parameter $q=e^{i\hbar}$ is a root of unity, that its branch cuts are given…
We develop a generic $\mathbf{k}\cdot \mathbf{p}$ open momentum space method for calculating the Hofstadter butterfly of both continuum (Moiré) models and tight-binding models, where the quasimomentum is directly substituted by the Landau level (LL) operators. By taking a LL cutoff (and a reciprocal lattice cutoff for continuum models), one obtains the Hofstadter butterfly with in-gap spectral flows. For continuum models such as the Moiré model for twisted bilayer graphene, our method gives a sparse Hamiltonian, making it much more efficient than existing methods. The spectral flows in the Hof…
We calculate thermodynamical properties of the Hofstadter model using a recently developed quantum transfer matrix method. We find intrinsic oscillation features in specific heat that manifest the fractal structure of the Hofstadter butterfly. We also propose experimental approaches which use specific heat as an access to detect the Hofstadter butterfly.
Motivated by recent experimental attempts to detect the Hofstadter butterfly, we numerically calculate the Hall conductivity in a modulated two-dimensional electron system with disorder in the quantum Hall regime. We identify the critical energies where the states are extended for each of butterfly subbands, and obtain the trajectory as a function of the disorder. Remarkably, we find that when the modulation becomes anisotropic, the critical energy branches accompanying a change of the Hall conductivity.
We investigate the optical absorption spectrum and the selection rule for the Hofstadter butterfly in twisted bilayer graphene under magnetic fields. We demonstrate that the absorption spectrum exhibits a self-similar recursive pattern reflecting the fractal nature of the energy spectrum. We find that the optical selection rule has a nested self-similar structure as well, and it is governed by the conservation of the total angular momentum summed over different hierarchies.
We have developed a different quantum transfer matrix method to accurately determine thermodynamic properties of the Hofstadter model. This method resolves a technical problem which is intractable by other methods and makes the calculation of physical quantities of the Hofstadter model in the thermodynamic limit at finite temperatures feasible. It is shown that the quantum correction to the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation of magnetization bears the energy structure of Hofstadter butterfly. The measurement of this quantum correction, which can be materialized on the superlattice or cold a…
We extensively study the localization and the quantum Hall effect in the Hofstadter butterfly, which emerges in a two-dimensional electron system with a weak two-dimensional periodic potential. We numerically calculate the Hall conductivity and the localization length for finite systems with the disorder in general magnetic fields, and estimate the energies of the extended levels in an infinite system. We obtain the Hall plateau diagram on the whole region of the Hofstadter butterfly, and propose a theory for the evolution of the plateau structure with increasing disorder. There we show that a…
We investigate the electronic properties in the Bloch electron on a square lattice with vacancies in the uniform magnetic field. We show that a single vacancy site introduced to the system creates a defect energy level in every single innumerable fractal energy gap in the Hofstadter butterfly. The wavefunctions of different defect levels have all different localization lengths depending on their fractal generations, and they can be described by a single universal function after an appropriate fractal scaling. We also show that each defect state has its own characteristic orbital magnetic momen…
The magnetic field generated Hofstadter butterfly in single-twist trilayer graphene (TLG) is investigated using circularly polarized light (CPL) and longitudinal light emanating from a waveguide. We show that single-twist TLG has two distinct chiral limits in the equilibrium state, and the central branch of the butterfly splits into two precisely degenerate components. The Hofstadter butterfly appears to be more discernible. We also discovered that CPL causes a large gap opening at the central branch of the Hofstadter butterfly energy spectrum and between the Landau levels, with a clear asymme…
The $α$-$T_3$ model extrapolates between the pseudospin $S=1/2$ honeycomb lattice of graphene and the pseudospin $S=1$ dice lattice via parameter $α$. We present calculations of the magnetic properties of this hybrid pseudospin model, namely the absorptive magneto-optical conductivity and the Hofstadter butterfly spectra. In the magneto-optics curves, signatures of the hybrid system corollary a doublet structure present in the peaks, resulting from differing Landau level energies in the $K$ and $K^{\prime}$ valleys. In the Hofstadter spectra, we detail the evolution of the Hofstadter butterfly…
The energy spectrum of a tight-binding Hamiltonian is studied for the two-dimensional quasiperiodic Rauzy tiling in a perpendicular magnetic field. This spectrum known as a Hofstadter butterfly displays a very rich pattern of bulk gaps that are labeled by four integers, instead of two for periodic systems. The role of phason-flip disorder is also investigated in order to extract genuinely quasiperiodic properties. This geometric disorder is found to only preserve main quantum Hall gaps.
We theoretically study the Hofstadter butterfly of a triangular network model in minimally twisted bilayer graphene (mTBLG). The band structure manifests periodicity in energy, mimicking that of Floquet systems. The butterfly diagrams provide fingerprints of the model parameters and reveal the hidden band topology. In a strong magnetic field, we establish that mTBLG realizes low-energy Floquet topological insulators (FTIs) carrying zero Chern number, while hosting chiral edge states in bulk gaps. We identify the FTIs by analyzing the nontrivial spectral flow in the Hofstadter butterfly, and by…
We give a perspective on the Hofstadter butterfly (fractal energy spectrum in magnetic fields), which we have shown to arise specifically in three-dimensional(3D) systems in our previous work. (i) We first obtain the `phase diagram' on a parameter space of the transfer energies and the magnetic field for the appearance of Hofstadter's butterfly spectrum in anisotropic crystals in 3D. (ii) We show that the orientation of the external magnetic field can be arbitrary to have the 3D butterfly. (iii) We show that the butterfly is beyond the semiclassical description. (iv) The required magnetic fiel…
The Hofstadter butterfly is a quantum fractal with a highly complex nested set of gaps, where each gap represents a quantum Hall state whose quantized conductivity is characterized by topological invariants known as the Chern numbers. Here we obtain simple rules to determine the Chern numbers at all scales in the butterfly fractal and lay out a very detailed topological map of the butterfly. Our study reveals the existence of a set of critical points, each corresponding to a macroscopic annihilation of orderly patterns of both the positive and the negative Cherns that appears as a fine structu…
I revisit the problem of a charged particle on a two-dimensional lattice immersed in a constant (electro)magnetic field, and discuss the energy spectrum - Hofstadter's butterfly - from a new, quantum field theoretical perspective. In particular, I point out that there is an intricate interplay between a) the structure of the butterfly at low magnetic flux, b) the absence of asymptotic freedom in QED and c) the enhancement of the quark condensate by a magnetic field at zero temperature. I proceed to discuss the response of the QCD condensate to the magnetic field at nonzero temperatures in four…
We study the relation between the global topology of the Hofstadter butterfly of a multiband insulator and the topological invariants of the underlying Hamiltonian. The global topology of the butterfly, i.e., the displacement of the energy gaps as the magnetic field is varied by one flux quantum, is determined by the spectral flow of energy eigenstates crossing gaps as the field is tuned. We find that for each gap this spectral flow is equal to the topological invariant of the gap, i.e., the net number of edge modes traversing the gap. For periodically driven systems, our results apply to the …
We theoretically introduce and study a three-dimensional Hofstadter model with linearly varying non-Abelian gauge potentials along all three dimensions. The model can be interpreted as spin-orbit coupling among a trio of Hofstadter butterfly pairs since each Cartesian surface ($xy$, $yz$, or $zx$) of the model reduces to a two-dimensional non-Abelian Hofstadter problem. By evaluating the commutativity among arbitrary loop operators around all axes, we derive its genuine (necessary and sufficient) non-Abelian condition, namely, at least two out of the three hopping phases should be neither 0 no…
Graphene flakes placed on hexagonal boron nitride feature in the presence of a magnetic field a complex electronic structure due to a hexagonal moiré potential resulting from the van der Waals interaction with the substrate. The slight lattice mismatch gives rise to a periodic supercell potential. Zone folding is expected to create replica of the original Dirac cone and Hofstadter butterflies. Our large-scale tight binding simulation reveals an unexpected coexistence of a relativistic and non-relativistic Landau level structure. The presence of the zeroth Landau level and its associated butter…
In this work we use Floquet theory to theoretically study the influence of monochromatic circularly and linearly polarized light on the Hofstadter butterfly---induced by a uniform perpendicular magnetic field--for both the kagome and triangular lattices. In the absence of the laser light, the butterfly has fractal structure with inversion symmetry about magnetic flux $ϕ=1/4$, and reflection symmetry about $ϕ=1/2$. As the system is exposed to an external laser, we find circularly polarized light deforms the butterfly by breaking the mirror symmetry at flux $ϕ=1/2$. By contrast, linearly polariz…
For a three-dimensional lattice in magnetic fields we have shown that the hopping along the third direction, which normally tends to smear out the Landau quantization gaps, can rather give rise to a fractal energy spectram akin to Hofstadter's butterfly when a criterion, found here by mapping the problem to two dimensions, is fulfilled by anisotropic (quasi-one-dimensional) systems. In 3D the angle of the magnetic field plays the role of the field intensity in 2D, so that the butterfly can occur in much smaller fields. The mapping also enables us to calculate the Hall conductivity, in terms of…
We propose that Hofstadter's butterfly accompanied by quantum Hall effect that is similar to those predicted to occur in 3D tight-binding systems by Koshino {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 86}, 1062 (2001)] can be realized in an entirely different system -- 3D metals applied with weak external periodic modulations (e.g., acoustic waves). Namely, an effect of two periodic potentials interferes with Landau's quantization due to an applied magnetic field $\Vec{B}$, resulting generally in fractal energy gaps as a function of the tilting angle of $\Vec{B}$, for which the accompanying quantized …
The energy spectrum of massless Dirac fermions in graphene under two dimensional periodic magnetic modulation having square lattice symmetry is calculated. We show that the translation symmetry of the problem is similar to that of the Hofstadter or TKNN problem and in the weak field limit the tight binding energy eigenvalue equation is indeed given by Harper Hofstadter hamiltonian. We show that due to its magnetic translational symmetry the Hall conductivity can be identified as a topological invariant and hence quantized. We thus extend the idea of Quantum Hall Effect to magnetically modulate…
The problem of two-dimensional, independent electrons subject to a periodic potential and a uniform perpendicular magnetic field unveils surprisingly rich physics, as epitomized by the fractal energy spectrum known as Hofstadter's Butterfly. It has hitherto been addressed using various approximations rooted in either the strong potential or the strong field limiting cases. Here we report calculations of the full spectrum of the single-particle Schrödinger equation without further approximations. Our method is exact, up to numerical precision, for any combination of potential and uniform field …
We investigate a finite two-dimensional system in the presence of external magnetic field. We discuss how the energy spectrum depends on the system size, boundary conditions and Coulomb repulsion. On one hand, using these results we present the field dependence of the transport properties of a nanosystem. In particular, we demonstrate that these properties depend on whether the system consists of even or odd number of sites. On the other hand, on the basis of exact results obtained for a finite system we investigate whether the Hofstadter butterfly is robust against strong electronic correlati…
In this work, we report original properties inherent to independent particles subjected to a magnetic field by emphasizing the existence of regular structures in the energy spectrum's outline. We show that this fractal curve, the well-known Hofstadter butterfly's outline, is associated to a specific sequence of Chern numbers that correspond to the quantized transverse conductivity. Indeed the topological invariant that characterizes the fundamental energy band depicts successive stairways as the magnetic flux varies. Moreover each stairway is shown to be labeled by another Chern number which m…
We show that the electronic spectrum of a tight-binding Hamiltonian defined in a quasiperiodic chain with an on-site potential given by a Fibonacci sequence, can be obtained as a superposition of Harper potentials. The electronic spectrum of the Harper equation is a fractal set, known as Hofstadter butterfly. Here we show that is possible to construct a similar butterfly for the Fibonacci potential just by adding harmonics to the Harper potential. As a result, the equations in reciprocal space for the Fibonacci case have the form of a chain with a long range interaction between Fourier compone…
The fractal spectrum of magnetic minibands (Hofstadter butterfly), induced by the moiré super- lattice of graphene on an hexagonal crystal substrate, is known to exhibit gapped Dirac cones. We show that the gap can be closed by slightly misaligning the substrate, producing a hierarchy of conical singularities (Dirac points) in the band structure at rational values Phi = (p/q)(h/e) of the magnetic flux per supercell. Each Dirac point signals a switch of the topological quantum number in the connected component of the quantum Hall phase diagram. Model calculations reveal the scale invariant cond…
We rely on a recent method for determining edge spectra and we use it to compute the Chern numbers for Hofstadter models on the honeycomb lattice having rational magnetic flux per unit cell. Based on the bulk-edge correspondence, the Chern number $σ_H$ is given as the winding number of an eigenvector of a $2 \times 2$ transfer matrix, as a function of the quasi-momentum $k \in (0,2 π)$. This method is computationally efficient (of order $O(n^4)$ in the resolution of the desired image). It also shows that for the honeycomb lattice the solution for $σ_H $ for flux $p/q$ in the $r$-th gap conform…
In this paper, we use Floquet theory to theoretically study the effect of monochromatic circularly and linearly polarized light on the Hofstadter butterfly in the square lattice, which is induced by uniform perpendicular magnetic field. In the absence of laser, the butterfly has a fractal, self-similar structure particle-hole symmetry and reflection symmetry about magnetic flux $ϕ= 1/2$. These symmetries are preserved by the sub-lattice and the time-reversal symmetry, respectively. As the system is exposed to circularly polarized light, the original Hofsatdter butterfly in equilibrium is defor…
We study the magnetic field induced Hofstadter butterfly in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) in various kinds of situations. First, we study the equilibrium case and identify the interlayer hopping processes that are most crucial for the appearance of a Hofstadter butterfly. Surprisingly, the hopping processes that are important for the appearance of the Hofstadter butterfly can be categorized as AA stacking type - that is interlayer hoppings between equivalent sublattices. This is in contrast to AB/BA-type hoppings that are important for the appearance of flat bands in magic angle TBG and were …

In the presence of crystalline symmetries, topological phases of matter acquire a host of invariants leading to non-trivial quantized responses. Here we study a particular invariant, the discrete shift $\mathscr{S}$, for the square lattice Hofstadter model of free fermions. $\mathscr{S}$ is associated with a $\mathbb{Z}_M$ classification in the presence of $M$-fold rotational symmetry and charge conservation. $\mathscr{S}$ gives quantized contributions to (i) the fractional charge bound to a lattice disclination, and (ii) the angular momentum of the ground state with an additional, symmetrical…
We present theoretical calculations for the cyclotron resonance and various magnetoplasmon modes of a Coulomb interacting two-dimensional GaAs electron gas (2DEG) modulated as a lateral superlattice of quantum dots subjected to an external perpendicular constant magnetic field. We use a real-time excitation approach based on the Liouville-von Neumann equation for the density operator, that can go beyond linear response delivering information of all longitudinal and transverse collective modes of interest to the same order. We perform an extensive analysis of the coexisting collective modes due…
Moiré superlattices in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures provide 20 an efficient way to engineer electron band properties. The recent discovery of exotic quantum phases and their interplay in twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) has built this moiré system one of the most renowned condensed matter platforms (1-10). So far the studies of tBLG has been mostly focused on the lowest two flat moiré bands at the first magic angle θm1 ~ 1.1°, leaving high-order moiré bands and magic angles largely unexplored. Here we report 25 an observation of multiple well-isolated flat moiré ban…
We study the energy spectrum and quantum Hall effects of the twisted double bilayer graphene in uniform magnetic field. We investigate two different arrangements, AB-AB and AB-BA, which differ in the relative orientation but have very similar band structures in the absence of a magnetic field. For each system, we calculate the energy spectrum and quantized Hall conductivities at each spectral gap by using a continuum Hamiltonian that satisfies the magneto-translation condition. We show that the Hofstadter butterfly spectra of AB-AB and AB-BA stackings differ significantly, even though their ze…
In a previous work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 047202 (2019)] a translationally invariant framework called quantum-electrodynamical Bloch (QED-Bloch) theory was introduced for the description of periodic materials in homogeneous magnetic fields and strongly coupled to the quantized photon field in the optical limit. For such systems, we show that QED-Bloch theory predicts the existence of fractal polaritonic spectra as a function of the cavity coupling strength. In addition, for the energy spectrum as a function of the relative magnetic flux we find that a terahertz cavity can modify the standard H…
We investigate theoretically the spectrum of a graphene-like sample (honeycomb lattice) subjected to a perpendicular magnetic field and irradiated by circularly polarized light. This system is studied using the Floquet formalism, and the resulting Hofstadter spectrum is analyzed for different regimes of the driving frequency. For lower frequencies, resonances of various copies of the spectrum lead to intricate formations of topological gaps. In the Landau-level regime, new wing-like gaps emerge upon reducing the driving frequency, thus revealing the possibility of dynamically tuning the format…
The Hofstadter model, well-known for its fractal butterfly spectrum, describes two-dimensional electrons under a perpendicular magnetic field, which gives rise to the integer quantum hall effect. Inspired by the real-space building blocks of non-Abelian gauge fields from a recent experiment [Science, 365, 1021 (2019)], we introduce and theoretically study two non-Abelian generalizations of the Hofstadter model. Each model describes two pairs of Hofstadter butterflies that are spin-orbit coupled. In contrast to the original Hofstadter model that can be equivalently studied in the Landau and sym…
Motivated by the recent experiments on periodically modulated, two dimensional electron systems placed in large transversal magnetic fields, we investigate the interplay between the effects of disorder and periodic potentials in the integer quantum Hall regime. In particular, we study the case where disorder is larger than the periodic modulation, but both are small enough that Landau level mixing is negligible. In this limit, the self-consistent Born approximation is inadequate. We carry extensive numerical calculations to understand the relevant physics in the lowest Landau level, such as th…
Motivated by recent experimental breakthroughs in realizing hyperbolic lattices in superconducting waveguides and electric circuits, we compute the Hofstadter butterfly on regular hyperbolic tilings. By utilizing large hyperbolic lattices with periodic boundary conditions, we obtain the true hyperbolic bulk spectrum that is unaffected by contributions from boundary states. Our results reveal that the butterfly spectrum with large extended gapped regions prevails and that its shape is universally determined by the number of edges of the fundamental tile, while the fractal structure is lost in s…
Van der Waals heterostructures comprise a new class of artificial materials formed by stacking atomically-thin planar crystals. Here, we demonstrate band structure engineering of a van der Waals heterostructure composed of a monolayer graphene flake coupled to a rotationally-aligned hexagonal boron nitride substrate. The spatially-varying interlayer atomic registry results both in a local breaking of the carbon sublattice symmetry and a long-range moiré superlattice potential in the graphene. This interplay between short- and long-wavelength effects results in a band structure described by iso…
We present a scheme to generate an artificial gauge field for the system of neutral bosons, represented by polaritons in micropillars arranged into a square lattice. The splitting between the two polarizations of the micropillars breaks the time-reversal symmetry (TRS) and results in the effective phase-dependent hopping between cavities. This can allow for engineering a nonzero flux on the plaquette, corresponding to an artificial magnetic field. Changing the phase, we observe a characteristic Hofstadter's butterfly pattern and the appearance of chiral edge states for a finite-size structure.…
We perform an analytical study of the energy and entanglement spectrum of non-interacting fermionic bilayer honeycomb lattices in the presence of trigonal warping in the energy spectrum, on-site energy difference and uniform magnetic field. Employing single particle correlation functions, we present an explicit form for layer-layer entanglement Hamiltonian whose spectrum is entanglement spectrum. We demonstrate that in the absence of trigonal warping, at zero on-site energy difference exact correspondence is established between entanglement spectrum and energy spectrum of monolayer which means…
In this work, we study the topological phases of the dimerized square lattice in the presence of an external magnetic field. The dimerization pattern in the lattice's hopping amplitudes can induce a series of bulk energy gap openings in the Hofstadter spectrum at certain fractional fillings, giving rise to various topological phases. In particular, we show that at $\frac{1}{2}$-filling the topological quadrupole insulator phase with a quadrupole moment quantized to $\frac{e}{2}$ and associated corner-localized mid-gap states exists in certain parameter regime for all magnetic fluxes. At $\frac…
Based on a thorough numerical analysis of the spectrum of Harper's operator, which describes, e.g., an electron on a two-dimensional lattice subjected to a magnetic field perpendicular to the lattice plane, we make the following conjecture: For any value of the incommensurability parameter sigma of the operator its spectrum can be covered by the bands of the spectrum for every rational approximant of sigma after stretching them by factors with a common upper bound. We show that this conjecture has the following important consequences: For all irrational values of sigma the spectrum is (i) a ze…
Electronic bands in a square lattice when subjected to a perpendicular magnetic field form the Hofstadter butterfly pattern. We study the evolution of this pattern as a function of bond percolation disorder (removal or dilution of lattice bonds). With increasing concentration of the bonds removed, the butterfly pattern gets smoothly decimated. However, in this process of decimation, bands develop interesting characteristics and features. For example, in the high disorder limit, some butterfly-like pattern still persists even as most of the states are localized. We also analyze, in the low diso…
The magnetic Laplacian (also called the line bundle Laplacian) on a connected weighted graph is a self-adjoint operator wherein the real-valued adjacency weights are replaced by unit complex-valued weights $\{ω_{xy}\}_{xy\in E}$, satisfying the condition that $ω_{xy}=\overline{ω_{yx}}$ for every directed edge $xy$. When properly interpreted, these complex weights give rise to magnetic fluxes through cycles in the graph. In this paper we establish the spectrum of the magnetic Laplacian, as a set of real numbers with multiplicities, on the Sierpinski gasket graph ($SG$) where the magnetic fluxes…
Motivated by recent experimental realizations of topological edge states in Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chains, we theoretically study a ladder system whose legs are comprised of two such chains. We show that the ladder hosts a rich phase diagram and related edge mode structure dictated by choice of inter-chain and intra-chain couplings. Namely, we exhibit three distinct physical regimes: a topological hosting localized zero energy edge modes, a topologically trivial phase having no edge mode structure, and a regime reminiscent of a weak topological insulator having unprotected edge modes resem…
Electrons moving through a spatially periodic lattice potential develop a quantized energy spectrum consisting of discrete Bloch bands. In two dimensions, electrons moving through a magnetic field also develop a quantized energy spectrum, consisting of highly degenerate Landau energy levels. In 1976 Douglas Hofstadter theoretically considered the intersection of these two problems and discovered that 2D electrons subjected to both a magnetic field and a periodic electrostatic potential exhibit a self-similar recursive energy spectrum. Known as Hofstadter's butterfly, this complex spectrum resu…
The electronic spectrum of a two-dimensional square lattice in a perpendicular magnetic field has become known as the Hofstadter butterfly [Hofstadter, Phys. Rev. B 14, 2239 (1976).]. We have calculated quasi-one-dimensional analogs of the Hofstadter butterfly for carbon nanotubes (CNTs). For the case of single-wall CNTs, it is straightforward to implement magnetic fields parallel to the tube axis by means of zone folding in the graphene reciprocal lattice. We have also studied perpendicular magnetic fields which, in contrast to the parallel case, lead to a much richer, pseudofractal spectrum.…
We study the Hofstadter butterfly and Landau levels of the twisted bilayer graphene (TBG). We show that the nontrivial fragile topology of the lowest two bands near the charge neutral point makes their Hofstadter butterfly generically connected with higher bands, closing the gap between the first and second conduction (valence) bands at a certain magnetic flux per unit cell. We also develop a momentum space method for calculating the TBG Hofstadter butterfly, from which we identify three phases where the Hofstadter butterflies of the lowest two bands and the higher bands are connected in diffe…
The magnetic field affects the Bloch band structure in a couple of ways. First it breaks the Bloch band into magnetic subbands or the Landau levels are broadened into magnetic Bloch bands. The resulting group of subbands in the central portion of the energy scale is associated with the integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE). Then at high fields it changes the integrated density of states of the remaining lowest and topmost subband, respectively, which can be associated with fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE). Here, we employ the Maxwell Chern-Simons gauge theory to formulate the subband-gap map…
