The celebrated Cwikel-Lieb_Rozenblum inequality gives an upper estimate for the number of negative eigenvalues of Schroedinger operators in dimension three and higher. The situation is much more difficult in the two dimensional case. There has been significant progress in obtaining upper estimates for the number of negative eigenvalues of two dimensional Schroedinger operators on the whole plane. In this thesis, we present estimates of the Cwikel-Lieb_Rozenblum type for the number of eigenvalues (counted with multiplicities) of two dimensional Schroedinger operators lying below the essential spectrum in terms of the norms of the potential. The problem is considered on the whole plane with different supports of the potential of dimension between 0 and 2, and on a strip with various boundary conditions. In both cases, the estimates involve weighted L^1 norms and Orlicz norms of the potential.
This paper is concerned with the estimation of the number of negative eigenvalues (bound states) of Schroedinger operators in a strip subject to Neumann boundary conditions. The estimates involve weighted L^1 norms and L ln L norms of the potential. Estimates involving the norms of the potential supported by a curve embedded in the strip are also presented.
We present upper estimates for the number of negative eigenvalues of two-dimensional Schroedinger operators with potentials generated by Ahlfors regular measures of arbitrary dimension $α\in (0, 2]$.The estimates are given in terms of the integrals of the potential with a logarithmic weight and of its L $\log$ L type Orlicz norms. In the case $α= 1$, our estimates are stronger than the known ones about Schroedinger operators with potentials supported by Lipschitz curves.
In this paper, quantitative upper estimates for the number of eigenvalues lying below the essential spectrum of Schroedinger operators with potentials generated by Ahlfors regular measures in a strip subject to two different types of boundary conditions (Robin and Dirichlet respectively) are presented. The estimates are presented in terms of weighted L^1 norms and Orlicz norms of the potential.
We consider discrete one-dimensional Schroedinger operators whose potentials decay asymptotically like an inverse square. In the super-critical case, where there are infinitely many discrete eigenvalues, we compute precise asymptotics of the number of eigenvalues below a given energy E as this energy tends to the bottom of the essential spectrum.
Inequalities are derived for sums and quotients of eigenvalues of magnetic Schroedinger operators with non-negative electric potentials in domains. The bounds reflect the correct order of growth in the semi-classical limit.
In this paper we consider magnetic Schroedinger operators on the two-dimensional unit disk with a radially symmetric magnetic field which explodes to infinity at the boundary. We prove a bound for the eigenvalue moments and a bound for the number of negative eigenvalues for such operators.
We prove dynamical upper bounds for discrete one-dimensional Schroedinger operators in terms of various spacing properties of the eigenvalues of finite volume approximations. We demonstrate the applicability of our approach by a study of the Fibonacci Hamiltonian.
We study the Schroedinger operator with a constant magnetic field in the exterior of a two-dimensional compact domain. Functions in the domain of the operator are subject to a boundary condition of the third type (Robin condition). In addition to the Landau levels, we obtain that the spectrum of this operator consists of clusters of eigenvalues around the Landau levels and that they do accumulate to the Landau levels from below. We give a precise asymptotic formula for the rate of accumulation of eigenvalues in these clusters, which appears to be independent from the boundary condition.
We prove conditions on potentials which imply that the sum of the negative eigenvalues of the Schroeodinger operator is finite. We use a method for bounding eigenvalues based on estimates of the Hilbert-Schmidt norm of semigroup differences and on complex analysis
An explicit construction is provided for embedding n positive eigenvalues in the spectrum of a Schroedinger operator on the half-line with a Dirichlet boundary condition at the origin. The resulting potential is of von Neumann-Wigner type, but can be real valued as well as complex valued.
We prove that the number of negative eigenvalues of two-dimensional magnetic Schroedinger operators is bounded from above by the strength of the corresponding electric potential. Such estimates fail in the absence of a magnetic field. We also show how the corresponding upper bounds depend on the properties of the magnetic field and discuss their connection with Hardy-type inequalities.
We consider Schroedinger operators on regular metric trees and prove Lieb-Thirring and Cwikel-Lieb-Rozenblum inequalities for their negative eigenvalues. The validity of these inequalities depends on the volume growth of the tree. We show that the bounds are valid in the endpoint case and reflect the correct order in the weak or strong coupling limit.
In this paper, we establish Cwikel-type estimates for noncommutative tori for any dimension~$n\geq 2$. We use them to derive Cwikel-Lieb-Rozenblum inequalities and and Lieb-Thirring inequalities for the number of negative eigenvalues of fractional Schroedinger operators on noncommutative tori in any dimension~$n\geq 2$. The latter leads to a Sobolev inequality for noncommutative tori. On the way we establish a "borderline version" of the abstract Birman-Schwinger principle for the number of negative eigenvalues of relatively compact form perturbations of a non-negative semi-bounded operator wi…
We prove trace inequalities for a self-adjoint operator on an abstract Hilbert space. These inequalities lead to universal bounds on spectral gaps and on moments of eigenvalues lambda_k that are analogous to those known for Schroedinger operators and the Dirichlet Laplacian, on which the operators of interest are modeled. In addition we produce inequalities that are new even in the model case. These include a family of differential inequalities for generalized Riesz means and theorems stating that arithmetic means of lambda_k^p for p <= 3 are universally bounded from above by multiples of the …
We develop a new method for obtaining bounds on the negative eigenvalues of self-adjoint operators B in terms of a Schatten norm of the difference of the semigroups generated by A and B, where A is an operator with non-negative spectrum. Our method is based on the application of the Jensen identity of complex function theory to a suitably constructed holomorphic function, whose roots are in one-to-one correspondence with the negative eigenvalues of B. Applying our abstract results, together with bounds on Schatten norms of semigroup differences obtained by Demuth and Van Casteren, to Schroedin…
We use the "Value Distribution" theory developed by Pearson and Breimesser to obtain a sequence of functions in the eigenvalue parameter for some Sturm-Liouville problems which have the property of being "uniformly asymptotically distributed".
We investigate the eigenvalues of perturbed spherical Schrödinger operators under the assumption that the perturbation $q(x)$ satisfies $x q(x) \in L^1(0,1)$. We show that the square roots of eigenvalues are given by the square roots of the unperturbed eigenvalues up to an decaying error depending on the behavior of $q(x)$ near $x=0$. Furthermore, we provide sets of spectral data which uniquely determine $q(x)$.
We consider a quantum particle moving in the one dimensional lattice Z and interacting with a indefinite sign external field v. We prove that the associated discrete Schroedinger operator H can have one or two eigenvalues, situated as below the bottom of the essential spectrum, as well as above its top. Moreover, we show that the operator H can have two eigenvalues outside of the essential spectrum such that one of them is situated below the bottom of the essential spectrum, and other one above its top.
By developing the method of multipliers, we establish sufficient conditions on the electric potential and magnetic field which guarantee that the corresponding two-dimensional Schroedinger operator possesses no point spectrum. The settings of complex-valued electric potentials and singular magnetic potentials of Aharonov-Bohm field are also covered.
We consider a discrete Schroedinger operator whose potential is the sum of a Wigner-von Neumann term and a summable term. The essential spectrum of this operator equals to the interval [-2,2]. Inside this interval, there are two critical points where eigenvalues may be situated. We prove that, generically, the spectral density of the operator has zeroes of the power type at these points.
We consider the Schroedinger operator L_α on the half-line with a periodic background potential and the Wigner-von Neumann potential of Coulomb type: csin(2ωx+d)/(x+1). It is known that the continuous spectrum of the operator L_α has the same band-gap structure as the free periodic operator, whereas in each band of the absolutely continuous spectrum there exist two points (so-called critical or resonance) where the operator L_α has a subordinate solution, which can be either an eigenvalue or a `half-bound' state. The phenomenon of an embedded eigenvalue is unstable under the change of the boun…
We prove a localization theorem for continuous ergodic Schrödinger operators $ H_ω:= H_0 + V_ω$, where the random potential $ V_ω$ is a nonnegative Anderson-type perturbation of the periodic operator $ H_0$. We consider a lower spectral band edge of $ σ(H_0) $, say $ E= 0 $, at a gap which is preserved by the perturbation $ V_ω$. Assuming that all Floquet eigenvalues of $ H_0$, which reach the spectral edge 0 as a minimum, have there a positive definite Hessian, we conclude that there exists an interval $ I $ containing 0 such that $ H_ω$ has only pure point spectrum in $ I $ for almost all $ …
We strengthen and generalise a result of Kirsch and Simon on the behaviour of the function $N_L(E)$, the number of bound states of the operator $L = Δ+V$ in $\R^d$ below $-E$. Here $V$ is a bounded potential behaving asymptotically like $P(ω)r^{-2}$ where $P$ is a function on the sphere. It is well known that the eigenvalues of such an operator are all nonpositive, and accumulate only at 0. If the operator $Δ_{S^{d-1}}+P$ on the sphere has negative eigenvalues $-μ_1,...,-μ_n$ less than $-(d-2)^2/4$, we prove that $N_L(E)$ may be estimated as \[ N_L(E)) = \frac{\log(E^{-1})}{2π}\sum_{i=1}^n \sq…
Using relative oscillation theory and the reducibility result of Eliasson, we study perturbations of quasiperiodic Schroedinger operators. In particular, we derive relative oscillation criteria and eigenvalue asymptotics for critical potentials.
We consider the Hamiltonian $H$ of a 3D spinless non-relativistic quantum particle subject to parallel constant magnetic and non-constant electric field. The operator $H$ has infinitely many eigenvalues of infinite multiplicity embedded in its continuous spectrum. We perturb $H$ by appropriate scalar potentials $V$ and investigate the transformation of these embedded eigenvalues into resonances. First, we assume that the electric potentials are dilation-analytic with respect to the variable along the magnetic field, and obtain an asymptotic expansion of the resonances as the coupling constant …
This note points out some bounds for the number of negative eigenvalues of Schroedinger operators with Hardy-type potentials, which follow from a simple coordinate transformation, and could prove useful in a spectral analysis of certain supersymmetric quantum mechanical models.
The Schroedinger equation on the half line is considered with a real-valued, integrable potential having a finite first moment. It is shown that the potential and the boundary conditions are uniquely determined by the data containing the discrete eigenvalues for a boundary condition at the origin, the continuous part of the spectral measure for that boundary condition, and a subset of the discrete eigenvalues for a different boundary condition. This result extends the celebrated two-spectrum uniqueness theorem of Borg and Marchenko to the case where there is also a continuous spectrum
In this note, we derive explicit formulas for the Schroedinger wave operators in R^2 under the assumption that 0-energy is neither an eigenvalue nor a resonance. These formulas justify the use of a recently introduced topological approach of scattering theory to obtain index theorems.
The aim of the paper is to derive spectral estimates on the eigenvalue moments of the magnetic Schroedinger operators defined on the two-dimensional disk with a radially symmetric magnetic field and radially symmetric electric potential.
We prove quantitative bounds on the eigenvalues of non-selfadjoint unbounded operators obtained from selfadjoint operators by a perturbation that is relatively-Schatten. These bounds are applied to obtain new results on the distribution of eigenvalues of Schroedinger operators with complex potentials.
The goal of this paper is to derive estimates of eigenvalue moments for Dirichlet Laplacians and Schrödinger operators in regions having infinite cusps which are geometrically nontrivial being either curved or twisted; we are going to show how those geometric properties enter the eigenvalue bounds. The obtained inequalities reflect the essentially one-dimensional character of the cusps and we give an example showing that in an intermediate energy region they can be much stronger than the usual semiclassical bounds.
We prove trace identities for commutators of operators, which are used to derive sum rules and sharp universal bounds for the eigenvalues of periodic Schroedinger operators and Schroedinger operators on immersed manifolds. In particular, we prove bounds on the eigenvalue lambda_{N+1} in terms of the lower spectrum, bounds on ratios of means of eigenvalues, and universal monotonicity properties of eigenvalue moments, which imply sharp versions of Lieb-Thirring inequalities. In the geometric context we derive a version of Reilly's inequality, bounding the eigenvalue lambda_{N+1} of the Laplace-B…
We consider the Schrödinger operator $\mathcal L_α$ on the half-line with a periodic background potential and a perturbation which consists of two parts: a summable potential and the slowly decaying Wigner--von Neumann potential $\frac{c\sin(2ωx+δ)}{x^γ}$, where $γ\in(\frac12,1)$. The continuous spectrum of this operator has the same band-gap structure as the continuous spectrum of the unperturbed periodic operator. In every band there exist two points, called critical, where the eigenfunction equation has square summable solutions. Every critical point $ν_{cr}$ is an eigenvalue of the operato…
In this article, we consider the semiclassical Schrödinger operator $P = - h^{2} Δ+ V$ in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ with confining non-negative potential $V$ which vanishes, and study its low-lying eigenvalues $λ_{k} ( P )$ as $h \to 0$. First, we give a necessary and sufficient criterion upon $V^{-1} ( 0 )$ for $λ_{1} ( P ) h^{- 2}$ to be bounded. When $d = 1$ and $V^{-1} ( 0 ) = \{ 0 \}$, we are able to control the eigenvalues $λ_{k} ( P )$ for monotonous potentials by a quantity linked to an interval $I_{h}$, determined by an implicit relation involving $V$ and $h$. Next, we consider the case where …
We consider a Schroedinger operator on the axis with a bipartite potential consisting of two compactly supported complex-valued functions, whose supports are separated by a large distance. We show that this operator possesses a sequence of approximately equidistant complex-valued wavenumbers situated near the real axis. Depending on its imaginary part, each wavenumber corresponds to either a resonance or an eigenvalue. The obtained sequence of wavenumbers resembles transmission resonances in electromagnetic Fabry-Pérot interferometers formed by parallel mirrors. Our result has potential applic…
We consider the negative Dirichlet Laplacian on an infinite waveguide embedded in $\RR^2$, and finite segments thereof. The waveguide is a perturbation of a periodic strip in terms of a sequence of independent identically distributed random variables which influence the curvature. We derive explicit lower bounds on the first eigenvalue of finite segments of the randomly curved waveguide in the small coupling (i.e. weak disorder) regime. This allows us to estimate the probability of low lying eigenvalues, a tool which is relevant in the context of Anderson localization for random Schrödinger op…
This paper presents a thorough analysis of 1-dimensional Schroedinger operators whose potential is a linear combination of the Coulomb term 1/r and the centrifugal term 1/r^2. We allow both coupling constants to be complex. Using natural boundary conditions at 0, a two parameter holomorphic family of closed operators is introduced. We call them the Whittaker operators, since in the mathematical literature their eigenvalue equation is called the Whittaker equation. Spectral and scattering theory for Whittaker operators is studied. Whittaker operators appear in quantum mechanics as the radial pa…
We consider a periodic system of domains coupled by small windows. In such domain we study the band spectrum of a Schroedinger operator subject to Neumann condition. We show that near each isolated eigenvalue of the similar operator but in the periodicity cell, there are several non-intersecting bands of the spectrum for the perturbed operator. We also discuss the position of the points at which the band functions attain the edges of each band.
We prove new and explicit formulas for the wave operators of Schroedinger operators in R^3. These formulas put into light the very special role played by the generator of dilations and validate the topological approach of Levinson's theorem introduced in a previous publication. Our results hold for general (not spherically symmetric) potentials decaying fast enough at infinity, without any assumption on the absence of eigenvalue or resonance at 0-energy.
We study spectral properties of the Schroedinger operator with an imaginary sign potential on the real line. By constructing the resolvent kernel, we show that the pseudospectra of this operator are highly non-trivial, because of a blow-up of the resolvent at infinity. Furthermore, we derive estimates on the location of eigenvalues of the operator perturbed by complex potentials. The overall analysis demonstrates striking differences with respect to the weak-coupling behaviour of the Laplacian.
We consider the Hamiltonian $\hat {\mathrm{H}}_μ$ of a system of three identical particles(bosons) on the $d-$ dimensional lattice $\Z^d, d=1,2$ interacting via pairwise zero-range attractive potential $μ<0$. We describe precise location and structure of the essential spectrum of the Schrödinger operator $H_μ(K),K\in \T^d$ associated to $\hat {\mathrm{H}}_μ$ and prove the finiteness of the number of bound states of $H_μ(K),K\in \T^d$ lying below the bottom of the essential spectrum. Moreover, we show that bound states decay exponentially at infinity and eigenvalues and corresponding bound stat…
We present an overview over recent results concerning semi-classical spectral estimates for magnetic Schroedinger operators. We discuss how the constants in magnetic and non-magnetic eigenvalue bounds are related and we prove, in an abstract setting, that any non-magnetic Lieb-Thirring-type inequality implies a magnetic Lieb-Thirring-type inequality with possibly a larger constant.
We show that the Lieb-Thirring inequalities on moments of negative eigenvalues of Schroedinger-like operators remain true, with possibly different constants, when the critical Hardy-weight $C|x|^{-2}$ is subtracted from the Laplace operator. We do so by first establishing a Sobolev inequality for such operators. Similar results are true for fractional powers of the Laplacian and the Hardy-weight and, in particular, for relativistic Schroedinger operators. We also allow for the inclusion of magnetic vector potentials. As an application, we extend, for the first time, the proof of stability of r…
We study the Schroedinger operator with a constant magnetic field in the exterior of a compact domain in $\mathbb{R}^{2d}$, $d\geq 1$. The spectrum of this operator consists of clusters of eigenvalues around the Landau levels. We give asymptotic formulas for the rate of accumulation of eigenvalues in these clusters. When the compact is a Reinhart domain we are able to show a more precise asymptotic formula.
We investigate nodal sets of magnetic Schroedinger operators with zero magnetic field, acting on a non simply connected domain in $\r^2$. For the case of circulation 1/2 of the magnetic vector potential around each hole in the region, we obtain a charactisation of the nodal set, and use this to obtain bounds on the multiplicity of the groundstate. For the case of one hole and a fixed electric potential, we show that the first eigenvalue takes its highest value for circulation 1/2.
We consider a $2d$ magnetic Schrödinger operator perturbed by a weak magnetic field which slowly varies around a positive mean. In a previous paper we proved the appearance of a `Landau type' structure of spectral islands at the bottom of the spectrum, under the hypothesis that the lowest Bloch eigenvalue of the unperturbed operator remained simple on the whole Brillouin zone, even though its range may overlap with the range of the second eigenvalue. We also assumed that the first Bloch spectral projection was smooth and had a zero Chern number. In this paper we extend our previous results to …
We show coincidence of the two definitions of the integrated density of states (IDS) for a class of relativistic Schroedinger operators with magnetic fields and scalar potentials, the first one relying on the eigenvalue counting function of operators induced on open bounded sets with Dirichlet boundary conditions, the other one involving the spectral projections of the operator defined on the entire space. In this way one generalizes previous results for non-relativistic operators. The proofs needs the magnetic pseudodifferential calculus, as well as a Feynman-Kac-Ito formula for Levy processe…
We study the low-lying spectrum of the Dirichlet Laplace operator on a randomly wiggled strip. More precisely, our results are formulated in terms of the eigenvalues of finite segment approximations of the infinite waveguide. Under appropriate weak-disorder assumptions we obtain deterministic and probabilistic bounds on the position of the lowest eigenvalue. A Combes-Thomas argument allows us to obtain so-called 'initial length scale decay estimates' at they are used in the proof of spectral localization using the multiscale analysis.
A model operator $H$ associated to a system of three-particles on the three dimensional lattice $\Z^3$ and interacting via pair non-local potentials is studied. The following results are proven: (i) the operator $H$ has infinitely many eigenvalues lying below the bottom of the essential spectrum and accumulating at this point, in the case, where both Friedrichs model operators $h_{μ_α}(0),α=1,2,$ have threshold resonances. (ii) the operator $H$ has a finite number of eigenvalues lying outside of the essential spectrum, in the case, where at least one of $h_{μ_α}(0), α=1,2,$ has a threshold eig…

Generalized eigenfunctions of the two-dimensional relativistic Schrödinger operator $H=\sqrt{-Δ}+V(x)$ with $|V(x)|\leq C< x>^{-σ}$, $σ>3/2$, are considered. We compute the integral kernels of the boundary values $R_0^\pm(λ)=(\sqrt{-Δ}-(λ\pm i0))^{-1}$, and prove that the generalized eigenfunctions $ϕ^\pm(x,k)$ are bounded on $R_x^2\times\{k | a\leq |k|\leq b\}$, where $[a,b]\subset(0,\infty)\backslashσ_p(H)$, and $σ_p(H)$ is the set of eigenvalues of $H$. With this fact and the completeness of the wave operators, we establish the eigenfunction expansion for the absolutely continuous subspace …
Yes it does ! Indeed an extended version of Levinson's theorem is proposed for a system involving complex eigenvalues. The perturbed system corresponds to a realization of the Schroedinger operator with inverse square potential on the half-line, while the Dirichlet Laplacian on the half-line is chosen for the reference system. The resulting relation is an equality between the number of eigenvalues of the perturbed system and the winding number of the scattering system together with additional operators living at 0-energy and at infinite energy.
We analyze two-dimensional Schrödinger operators with the potential $|xy|^p - λ(x^2+y^2)^{p/(p+2)}$ where $p\ge 1$ and $λ\ge 0$, which exhibit an abrupt change of its spectral properties at a critical value of the coupling constant $λ$. We show that in the supercritical case the spectrum covers the whole real axis. In contrast, for $λ$ below the critical value the spectrum is purely discrete and we establish a Lieb-Thirring-type bound on its moments. In the critical case the essential spectrum covers the positive halfline while the negative spectrum can be only discrete, we demonstrate numeric…
We define a Schrödinger operator on the half-space with a discontinuous magnetic field having a piecewise-constant strength and a uniform direction. Motivated by applications in the theory of superconductivity, we study the infimum of the spectrum of the operator. We give sufficient conditions on the strength and the direction of the magnetic field such that the aforementioned infimum is an eigenvalue of a reduced model operator on the half-plane. We use the Schrödinger operator on the half-space to study a new semiclassical problem in bounded domains of the space, considering a magnetic Neuma…
We consider Toeplitz operators associated with the renormalized Bochner-Laplacian on high tensor powers of a positive line bundle on a compact symplectic manifold. We study the asymptotic behavior, in the semiclassical limit, of low-lying eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenfunctions of a self-adjoint Toeplitz operator under assumption that its principal symbol has a non-degenerate minimum with discrete wells. As an application, we prove upper bounds for low-lying eigenvalues of the Bochner-Laplacian in the semiclassical limit.
The Bethe Strip of width $m$ is the cartesian product $\B\times\{1,...,m\}$, where $\B$ is the Bethe lattice (Cayley tree). We prove that Anderson models on the Bethe strip have "extended states" for small disorder. More precisely, we consider Anderson-like Hamiltonians $\;H_λ=\frac12 Δ\otimes 1 + 1 \otimes A + λ\Vv$ on a Bethe strip with connectivity $K \geq 2$, where $A$ is an $m\times m$ symmetric matrix, $\Vv$ is a random matrix potential, and $λ$ is the disorder parameter. Given any closed interval $I\subset (-\sqrt{K}+a_{\mathrm{max}},\sqrt{K}+a_{\mathrm{min}})$, where $a_{\mathrm{min}}$…
